Actually, my mistake... the Kira official site mentions it will be at C80. But for online orders, it the release date mentions 9/14 (on Animate's shop).

I actually like the art much, much more compared to Rei. Even if Kira's proportions seem a bit wonky sometimes. But that's just me...

I don't think it's a mistake. The OVA doesn't really follow the main story and it's probably best not try to place these episodes somewhere in the main timeline. (The first episode is just some fanservice, fun, humorous episode after all. I don't think it's even supposed to make any sense. :heh:)

Also, I believe Hanyuu has been shown to be able to switch from physical form to transparent at one point during the Matsuribayashi-hen VN (while speaking Oishi and Co.)

Keeping costs low may be part of it.

A studio loses money only if it spends more on production than it receives from the sponsors. Generally, production studios do animate at a loss, but if they've acquired a stake in the show and score a big hit, they can recoup losses and profit (some aren't so lucky and die over the long run. Group TAC is an example).

Studio DEEN rarely invests in a production, so it's in their best interests to keep costs as low as possible (i.e. even if the product is a big hit, they have no entitlement to royalties), else they'll bleed to death in time. As long as people keep contracting their services and they ensure that expenses rarely exceed commission fees, they can stay afloat indefinitely.

Apparently I was wrong about the liscencing, BUT that does NOT excuse DEEN's lack of effort. The OP to Kira for instance. I'm not saying they lack effort in EVERYTHING they do, just some things really could have been done better. And as for Funimation? Well most of the dubs they do are terrible anyways so I don't find it surpirsing and Higurashi was no exception.

Again, I think that Funimation made improvements, but the North American release was such a train wreck (Geneon N.A. folding in the middle of the release certainly didn't help) that there was simply to much to be done to be profitable from Funi's end (and let's be fair, there's A LOT to be done). That's why I think the we, the hardest of the hardcore fans, should buy the core release from Geneon and DEEN. Even redubbing the series would score a massive improvement (assuming you could get Mion's VA, which might not be too hard - that was her first VA role), and the better subtitles could be overlaid (I'm working with [WinD] on this). This alone gives a way better overall product, and the license should be dirt cheap for the original series (especially based on Geneon's abysmal international sales).

I'll leave a final comment too. And that is exactly the point. Funimation Expecting such high prices for a four year old series did NOT help at all. They certainly did improve it a bit but not in a way that would please the North American audience. Box covers and graphics alone don't make a seires as old as Higurashi successful in N.A. That being said they could have done what was in their limits such news dubs and maybe new subs? Overall their marketing could have been alot better.

Bad news, friends.

Here's a post left by JJS (head of [WinD] Higurashi projects) to my inquiry about subbing Kira:

I was pretty excited for a new Higurashi OVA and we were pretty much all lined up to sub it, but having watched the first episode we're probably not going to do it.

You might remember Higurashi Rei started out with a silly fanservice episode and then the remaining episodes were a serious arc. Higurashi Kira is entirely fanservice, and it's gratuitous fanservice at that. No mystery, no suspense, no horrible murders, just happy fun time and borderline hentai. I might well be proven wrong once episode 2 comes out, but it seems nothing more than a cash grab by Studio DEEN and 07th Expansion. WinD has done some silly moe stuff in our time (*cough* Lovedol *cough*), but the current staff mostly agrees that there's no point in us spending time and effort on Kira unless it stops screwing around.

I know I sound all high and mighty about this, but I was genuinely looking forward to more of what I love about Higurashi and got something completely different and frankly unnecessary instead.

I dont know if someone already posted it on here, but is there an episode plan or do we only know that episode 2 is going to be a bastardized maho shojo ep? in other words, is there any hopes of seeing a Matsuri or Kizuna story line in the last couple of episodes? otherwise I'm going to have to hope for the 15 year anniversary or just break down and learn japanese to see those arcs

Unlikely that they will continue with the franchise since the official storyline has been over for awhile now and Kira is only a gift for those who've still kept up with Higurashi even after Umineko, I think. It's better to just learn Japanese, since there's really not much point in reanimating, rewriting and re-voicing what has already been voiced by the seiyuus.

If they still want to do that, I think the high chance is for Hanyuu's past story.
No Miotsukushi-hen or Natsumi's arcs.

...The one you're showing is the manga anthology, so it's not that one. We already said it's in the light novel anthology. It's not a manga. Light novel and manga are different.

Some of those fictions got manga adaption.
Some of those manga stories got drama CD adaption (8 works).
And only one of them become visual novel (on mobile).

Actually, you bring up a really good lingering point. Everything that we know about Rika (Sweet Rika-chan, Dark Rika, Core Rika) is all built upon her living in the Kakera-verse. I don't think we've ever been told if the persona of Sweet Rika-chan is supposed to be how she was originally or if this was purely an act created to ward off suspicion (like Reina's Rena persona). If this episode shows us a Rika without any knowledge of other worlds, then this could possibly give us some insight into the Original Rika (young though she may be).

Then again, DEEN could be DEEN and turn the whole episode into Rika's Day Out :uhoh:

I approve of this episode...despite it being rather silly in places.

I also heard a voice I'd not expected to hear...delicious Rie Tanaka doing an evil voice, Suigintou fashion. Despite Takano Miyo being the classical main villain for this series, I would have approved Nomura in a hot second over her.

Considering they constume change from nothing and other things (such as where did they have their weapons?)....hammerspace? The fog?

Very Sailor Moon-ish in parts (especially the transformation scenes...down to the "crystal makeup" commands). Odd considering one would expect a Nanoha vibe instead based on just voice acting. There are other things in there as well I imagine (Star Driver?). Very over the top, even for Higurashi. Rika is not amused by most of it and her Dark personality lets Hanyuu know about it when they are finally alone...plus her all out tantrum when she finds her transform doesn't have huge breasts. Also a lot....a whole lot of scenes were they stand and have speeches/conversations...while the enemy does nothing but stand there...also a bit like some Sailor Moon moments (though they eventually started parodying themselves by having the bad guys either walk away while Sailor Moon was on her openning speech or just attack before she can ramble on.)

Satoshi's voice change was creepier than most. Probably because of the very female pitched laugh before going even deeper male voiced. The creepy evil voices are something different from Rena and Mion/Shion. Not at all like their crazy voices when going L3+.

Though, is it wrong that during the first scene in the classroom I really wanted to hear what Rena and Mion were talking about instead of Satoko and Rika? It looked like more fun.

A definate improvement over the previous episode.

Too bad the beginning sequence was just a dream. I wanted to see more older versions of Satoko and Rika! (But I guess the new Hinamizawa Bus Stop manga will let me see that...) I like that Tamura Yukari didn't use her hideously deep Frederica voice for adult version Rika. :P

I don't have much to say. For some reason the animation quality seems lower in this episode than the first episode- but that might be because this was a low-quality stream I watched. I enjoyed the second half of the episode the most. It was very entertaining to watch all the characters acting so creepily. Rika's outbursts are pretty adorable (ie. after her transformation and realizing she's still a child)... you don't really see her acting that way that often. I think they had Hanyuu use the "-hanyuu" endings to make herself sound more like some cute adviser creature from a typical magical girl anime.

The ending song with Satoko and Rika sounds a little... odd. They sounded good together in the OP and insert song 100% Magical Star... but this song just does not work very well for the two of them.

Along with time manipulation and all her other powers, fundamental kakera generation/alteration also seem to be within her power. To be honest, all of the weirdness in Rei and Kira can easily be explained simply by saying that Hanyuu is bored. This doesn't surprise me at all, considering her nature, plus the fact that she knows she can mess with Rika with only the most minor of consequences.

I gotta say so far I have mixed reactions on this OVA. I couldn't stand the first episode, except for the end bit where they made fun of the ending of Onikakushi-hen. I really doubted episode 2 would be any better, but I was curious to see why Rena looked so mad in the preview. That episode far exceeded what I had expected of it. I just loved the Tsukihime reference they threw in, and the how they did all the character things right. Naturally Mion had to fight with ohagi filled needles, Hanyuu was the token small annoying thing, Shion was focused on Satako, Rena liked cutting things and pouring gasoline, Keiichi was too awesome to be possessed and was secretly a bad guy, and Satoshi, who never got much of a chance to act completely insane in the series was naturally the scariest. The part where showed her real self and commented about Rika she replaced was probably my favorite part, and the bit where Satoko broke the fourth wall to comment on Rika wanting to be a woman also came pretty close. The ending was rather awkward, but I can't help but wonder if they intentionally did it that way. All and all, if all the other episodes turn out to be bad, I'll always remember the OVA for this episode, as it was worth watching.

I still have mixed feelings about this OVA.

I understand that they did not have any material left to make something like the first two seasons, but sometimes I can't help but wonder why they even bothered making this new OVA? So far, it's just been a lot of fan service and randomness. It just doesn't feel like Higurashi. :( The first Kira episode was degrading and the second one of this OVA was an improvement but still not really anything significant.

Really hope it doesn't seem like I'm bashing or anything, because I have no such intentions. I'm just not very happy with these last two new episodes. I'm still grateful to get new Higurashi episodes and all, though.

This was a very nice episode.Best of Kira and actually better than the Rei season IMHO.I really wanted to see a slice of life from Hinamizawa after the conclusion of Matsuribayashi. Like Kokoroiyashi-hen. I believe this 3rd episode qualifies for that.(Maybe except for the Teppei scene)

First two episodes were pretty pointless for "official" works,but I'm going to add this episode to my archive as the 25th episode of Kai =)

Hanyuu's the same. The summary on the site pretty much says that Hanyuu has some time for herself, little Rika suddenly appears, and she has to return little Rika back to her original time.

...About Hanyuu's missing horns. I'm wondering... maybe it's actually a art/design mistake and they meant to make the hat look like it's hiding her horns? :heh: I can't think of a reason why they would suddenly decide to remove her horns for this...

It was released on Tuesday. We should have a 1080Hi10P sub in the next 2 weeks.

Yes, I do find that particular shot of Rika's head to be a rather odd shape. Character designs for the really young Rika should get posted to the official site in the next couple weeks (since that's been the usual routine).

As for the subs, what I meant is that the physical discs released just yesterday. Almost no one would try to sub Higurashi Kira off of the stream, so we'll just have to wait for the subs a little while longer.

Incidentally, does anyone know of a sub group that has decided to sub ALL of Kira? It seems like the groups that subbed 01 didn't sub 02 and vice versa. I'd like to keep my translations consistent.
