Description: 22-year-old Rin has two major problems; a complex about the tatoo-like birthmark on his butt and a crush on an older woman who thinks of him as her little brother. Rin hasn't allowed any woman to see his naked bottom since an incident when he was 7, which firmly entrenched his shame about his birthmark. When he finds his birthmark may grant him mystical powers over the opposite sex, will he finally be able to use his butt to his advantage? (Source: MangaUpdates)

This is an interesting series that has some good story and drama to it. And I have to say, it's had some great twists so far.
Rin is so damn gullible. I really hope he mans up some what as the series goes on. And Chizuru sure was shocked there, and I can't blame her.
"Wow, Rin-kun is pretty good." Well, looks like this party isn't over yet! :heh:
Kono S wo Mi yo ranks on top of the seinen batch of manga I’m currently reading which includes Hetakoi, Velvet Kiss, and Nozoki Ana. The concept of the story is similar to Kitazaki Taku’s previous manga, Sakuranbo Syndrome and Cupid no Itazura Nijidama with a different twist added in. I also like the tattoo concept where it’s a gift and a curse. Best thing about the manga is Kitazaki Taku's character designs. Love how he draws women in their 20's/30's.

Best thing about the manga is Kitazaki Taku's character designs. Love how he draws women in their 20's/30's.Actually, I really don't like the art here. The faces are always extreme.
Loved Sakuranbo Syndrome, even with its rather shitty ending. Kitazaki does some really good romance stuff.
I just finished reading Vol.5 of Kono S o Mi yo!, it finally delivered some explanations for Chizuru's irritating behaviour. Still hope Rin ends up with his childhood friend though.

Yeah the faces are a bit odd with the constant blushing. I'd still prefer it over the bland character designs of most manga.

I do like Makoto, but Rin has never thought of her as anything but a childhood friend. The vol 6 spoilers look very promising for Chiruzu. :heh:

Kono S wo Mi certainly has an interesting premise. I liked how in the early chapters Rin went about experimenting with the limits of his powers; that's certainly how I would go about doing it ;). I'm also liking how someone else is using his powers for her own benefit (and amusement?).
I'll definitely like to see how things develop and if there are any new twists.
It would be an epic end if some disgruntled lover sought revenge by tying him to a truck, butt exposed, and drove him all around town.
Would you be so kind as to give us a summary? :D
Sure, I can try and write something up when I get home from work.
Sorry about being so late with this, I went on vacation so I didn't have a chance to do it.
Anyway, here's a pretty short/basic summary.
So, Vol 6 continues where Vol 5 left off, going over Chizuru's past after moving in with her Grandmother. It shows Chizuru's relationship with her and her continued infatuation with Rin that continued even into college. It affects her so much that she can't touch or date men at all. It's shown through the first few parts of this that she often has sexual fantasies of Rin and even includes a hilarious two page fantasy drawn in a slightly shoujo style with a naughty looking Chizuru. In fact, it gets so bad, she ignored the program she was in and moved back to her hometown just to see Rin. It goes over some of the events we've seen in the previous chapters before switching back to the present.
The next major section in Vol 6 is an Aquarium date between Rin and Makoto. It's pretty clear she's trying to get Rin to sleep with her so she can get over the effect of the Stigma but it's not going as well what with Rin being all moody and angsty. They run into the Chizuru's grandmother (which is unknown to the two of them at this point) and Lisa at the aquarium too.
So they're going home and walk by a hotel and Makoto decides to make her move here. She and Rin are at the beach/cliff and she basically goes "I don't care how I do it, I have to! And is almost ready to push Rin into the water so they have to go to the hotel to dry off where she'll get into his pants. She's about to push him in and almost puts her hands on him until he suddenly gets up knocking her back. She almost falls and hits the ground but Rin catches her in an embrace and Makoto just goes crazy and orgasms from it even letting her voice slip. Rin doesn't think of it because Makoto covers it up by saying she may have sprained her ankle. So Rin says he'll give her a piggyback ride back to the parking lot. She refuses at first but the thought of riding on his back gets her imagination going again.
She ends up taking him up on his offer and away they go. Of course, Makoto teases him for having trouble carrying her up when he starts breathing heavily but she's the one that's breathing heavily too. Being so close to him and his hands on her butt has made her insanely aroused and on the verge of orgasming a bunch. Rin then moves his hands from her but to her legs and she realizes that Rin is a little embarassed and she thinks he's recognized her as a girl which causes her heart rate to skyrocket even more and she's worried her heart beat is going to be felt by Rin. She's super embarassed by this (insert really cute two page spread).
They get up to the top of the stairs and run into Lisa again who's looking for the old woman she's with. They agree to help her and Rin runs off to go look for the old woman. Makoto is feeling a little jealous but tries to reassure herself that she only wants his body once to be rid of the Stigma's effects trying to convince herself that the emotions aren't actually real.
Of course, the old woman shows up and is sitting on a bench near Makoto. Makoto talks with her a bit while waiting for Rin and Lisa to come back and comes to the realization that this is Chizuru's grandmother and figures out the entire reason why Chizuru is marrying what's his face is because she could get her grandmother treatment easily at the hospital if she did. Knowing that Rin wouldn't leave Chizuru alone Makoto swears that she won't tell Rin.
Fastforward to the next day at Makoto's parent's house and Makoto wakes up and walks into the living room. She sees her Dad and Rin's lunch on the table, "If I made it, Rin would be happy eh" and then goes through the routine of just saying "Just have sex with him once, not this I'm in love with thing again." She talks to her father a bit then goes downstairs passing Rin on the way, she starts imagining things about Rin and wets her pants thus having to go back to her room to change. She goes by the living room and over hears the conversation between her father and Rin about how folks in the same profession are prefect for each other mentions Makoto as a possible bride. Cue Makoto's fantasies again and her punching the wall hurting her hand.
Switch to Chizuru making dinner for her friend and a slight recap of the situation as a whole. Chizuru realizes her "love" for Rin is messed up and that what's his name helped her a lot by doing everything he could to get Chizuru's transfer done so she could be near Rin and getting her mother into a Group Home with very few people. She feels she has to repay him by "loving" him. Chizuru's all stoic and the like and saying "Rin's said I love you to me. That's more than enough happiness for a lifetime" to herself.
Next section you see Chizuru's husband to be (I'm too lazy to look up his name in the past volumes) sleeping with another woman. A few scenes here and there, and Takako ends up seeing him leave the hotel with said woman.
Takako later meets up with Makoto telling her about how she should hurry up and get it over with by having sex with Rin. Takako would even tell Rin to sleep with her to get it over with but Makoto won't have that. She's the only person Rin believes in because she believes his story. Takako is a little annoyed and tells Makoto to look over. Makoto sees what's his face with said woman. A bunch of thoughts run in Makoto's head but Takako says to her, "Those emotions you're feeling are all an illusion created by that Stigma. I know, I've experienced it. Sleep with him once and those emotions will disappear!" Makoto laments a bit about this at home.
She then offers Rin a ride home after work because his back is still busted. However, she takes Rin to where that guy is and shows him what's going on with him and that woman. He finds out about the guy's escapades and confronts him about Chizuru. Dude has been sleeping around with a lot of women, Lisa included, and Rin is angry about him marrying Chizuru, the woman acts all haughty and she and what's his name are about to leave when Rin says He isn't going to hand Chizuru over. He says Chizuru will choose him and the woman laughs at him. Rin shows her the Stigma and pokes her in the nipple causing her to orgasm ferciously (new attack, Offensive Orgasm!). The woman falls back on the hood of the care and Rin tells the guy that he won't hand Chizuru over to him and that she'll choose Rin over him before leaving. The woman is still sitting on the hood and is a blubbering mess with her legs wet spread out and drool coming out of her mouth while the guy looks at her unsure of what just went on.
Rin gets back into the car and tells Makoto about everything that just happened and they argue because Makoto figures out what he's going to do. Rin spouts some stuff and says that even he uses the Stigma, he'll protect Chizuru and make it real. This sets Makoto off and she gets in the car drives away leaving Rin there. Makoto curses herself about how Takako was right and that she shouldn't have told Rin. She knew Rin was going to pick Chizuru. Makoto stops the car and is crying her eyes out saying that she knows these feelings are an illusion created by the Stigma but implying that the sadness, jealousy, and shock she just felt feels so real to her.
Rin runs off to find out where Chizuru is and runs up to ask that pervy nurse about where she is but apparently, she's not going to tell Rin without getting something first and Vol 6 end with her on the couch legs spread open at Rin.
Sorry about it being messy, I wrote that all at once and didn't bother to edit it.
Anyway, Vol 6 has alot of really nice panels of Makoto and tons of great looks/cute faces for her. Makoto's my favorite character in this Kitazaki series and I love all the time he spent on her.
Thanx a lot!!
I'm glad Rin is taking the fight to him, I was afraid we would get a whole volume of him emoing about the morality of using the mark. If he was born blonde rich and tall he would use that to woe the girl he loves. But alas, he was born with a magical tatoo that makes women go crazy, so by all means he should use that. In love and war...

Well,
Rin has huge reservations about using the Stigma because he realizes that, in so far as he knows, it only works once. More than that, he realizes that the lust and interest in him is a result of the Stigma, not an attraction to him. He really doesn't want that and so he hasn't used it in such a manner. Except in this case with Chizuru, he has to use it to prevent her from marrying the jerk even if it means the consequences may end up bad for him in the end.
Thanks for the summary Shouta.
A gift and a curse is the best description for the stigma.
Good to see we get some background on Chizuru. Hate to say it. Looks like the manga is winding down.
Manga is definitely not going to wind down. There's been no resolution the origin of the Stigma and no real resolution to who Rin will end up with. Then there's still Takako and Risa around too. I suspect the manga will run as long as Sakuranbo will with how the story is being paced.

Well it might be, as you have that huge limiting factor of the marriage. I mean the author can't drag out the engagement forever can he? Something major has to happen with that sometime soon and that will probably put it into its final arc.
The stigma is being treated as if were a macguffin of sorts, I think. Similar to the other works of the author from the Cupid series (a mysterious male fertility disease, an age regressing disease, a super accurate spouse-matching program, and so on...), the stigma is just there to drive the plot while staying out of the actual human drama.
I won't be surprised if it doesn't get fully explained in the end.

Agree that it's just a plot device to create situations, to sometimes shake things up.
We probably shouldn't be too concerned about getting an explanation regarding the stigma; it doesn't matter if it's powered by magic or gobbledygook. The most we're getting is a more concrete definition of the stigma's powers, but at this point I don't think we'll be seeing any further exploration on the stigma. Rin's experiments in the early chapters seem to have the stigma's powers pretty well defined.

The only major Macguffin was Sakuranbo's. They actually explained the Nijidama disease at the end which was cool. While yes, it's true it's meant as a driving element for the story, it's still something that needs to be explained overall, I think. He'll explain it and then we'll know it'll be the end of the manga.
Yes they did, but it was practically inconsequential in the bigger scheme of things. In fact, it was only explained after the whole resolution to the drama has been said and done. The spouse-matching program in Ore x Yome doesn't even get explained aside from the fact it's what allows the main characters to meet each other, while the regressing age disease/condition—while rather macguffin-ish—could at least be said to be metaphorical of the relationship issue central in the story. (As for the second Ore x Yome story, well... I didn't really bother with that one.)
With that said, I wouldn't consider a full explanation for the stigma as a direct indication of whether this story is nearing its close or not. It could still be possibly explained, but I'm not going to expect it to be a thorough one... which really might not matter anyway depending on how the story plays out.
I haven't been paying attention to the raws that much, but I'm curious if Chizuru's claim that "first loves are a curse" has anything to do with Rin's stigma. That is, if I understood that part correctly. I found the wording sort of interesting in that regard. I hope she resolves her relationship with her grandmother, so that she may also resolve her relationship with Rin.
At the moment, I already find it predicatble that Rin will end up with Makoto, if he'll even end up with anyone at all. That seems par the course for these sort of "past vs. moving on" dramas—at least, that seems to be the nature of the story for me right now—but hopefully I'm wrong and the author will surprise me. Well, on the other hand this manga isn't that high on my reading priority right now, and I think I'll just look for ending spoilers in order to decide whether I should read it as a whole or not.
This one look interesting but it's a bit hard to find :(
I hope it's better than sakuranbo syndrome.
btw just a bit off topic..... Can anyone spoiled Sakuranbo syndrome ending for me, please?
I already read Vol. 11 raw but got a bit confuse in the end. Thanks in advance. :)
Didn't even remember Sakuranbo Syndrome was 11 volumes. I'm guessing that's probably a good thing.
I can see Kono S o, Mi yo! going past volume 7, but really since the start the end game has always been Rin x Chizuru. That's the only happy ending IMO.
Now that the engagement has proven to be a shame on both parties can't see how Chizuru and the other doctor can go through with it. Then there's Makato who just has to sleep with Rin once and then they'll be back to normal. The mangaka can add a lot more drama to it and bam it's already at 10 volumes.

Here's the other thing with the illness/macguffins, they usually are an important part to the overall theme or conflict of the work. It's very noticable for Sakuranbo but for it's there for Nijidama and Ore x Yome story 1. So while the Stigma doesn't require an explanation to complete the story, I think it needs to be somewhat there to make the theme of the story apparent. While we have had glimpses of it so far, it's not quite as concrete so far.
As for the direction of the manga currently.
It's explained in Vol 5 that Chizuru never saw the Stigma on Rin's ass. Rin's mother was the only one that ever was allowed to change Rin because of the stigma. Chizuru's "first love is a curse" is because she's bound herself to Rin so strongly. She's been obsessed with Rin from an early age and every decision in her life as been affected by it. She, in effect, also had the same affect on Rin. So yeah, it's not the Stigma for her but her own damaged self.
As for the resolution, I don't think Makoto or Chizuru is a given. For Rin, his ultimate worry, in regards to the Stigma and relationships in general, is that he wants someone that will honestly and actually love/care for him. The big conflict in the manga so far really isn't "past vs moving-on" but perhaps "Real vs Illusion" for a lack of a better label.
Chizuru's love for Rin is at crazy stalker levels and in part a result of Chizuru's own broken nature. While she cares for Rin, whether or not it's because of who he is rather than what he is to her is another question. This will be the big question for these two, if the emotions between them are a result of them actually seeing each other for themselves or if it's a result of the curse they've placed on each other. As I personally see it, Chizuru is the illusion element to me. Her love was borne of an obsession with Rin. Hence, why a first love is a curse, it grows because of the imagination of the person.
With Makoto, she's been with Rin from the day they were born. However, at least to her current internal monologue, she's seen Rin as a bit of a rival because Rin was always the one impressing her father. She didn't have a place or identity for herself as Rin had ended up taking up her spot in the eye of her parents hence why she didn't want to become a pâtissière. It's the reason why she went to college and partially the reason why she got involved with Takako.
However, reading the subtext to a lot of the situations (as Makoto's inner monologue can be a bit unreliable) there's an element of Makoto having real feelings for Rin because of the time they spend together and how much he confides in her. Even before the Stigma took affect on her, there were hints in her attitudes and actions that she has feelings for Rin thought she doesn't know it or admit it. Makoto ultimately represents the real option to me because in a lot of regards, she knows Rin for who he is and as a result seems to be attracted to him for it, not because of her own fantasies. However, it's a bit muddled at the moment because Makoto has the Stigma and she's been told that her feelings for Rin are fake. If the Stigma wears off and she still has the feelings, then we'll have quite a triangle there.
Here's the other thing with the illness/macguffins, they usually are an important part to the overall theme or conflict of the work. It's very noticable for Sakuranbo but for it's there for Sakuranbo and Ore x Yome story 1. So while the Stigma doesn't require an explanation to complete the story, I think it needs to be somewhat there to make the theme of the story apparent. While we have had glimpses of it so far, it's not quite as concrete so far.
I think of these as part of the setting. To me, they're a backdrop for the real story that is going on. For example in Ore x Yome, it does not need to be some spouse-matching system that allows them to enter into cohabitation. Its only role is to get them together in the first place. What matters is what the characters go through during the phase, and what lessons they learn after. It could've been a simpler agreement of sorts, a wager (which it was essentially), or even an unforeseen mistake in apartment hunting.
As for the direction of the manga currently...
Like I said, it's the wording which I find interesting. The specific use of the word "curse" alongside the word "stigma". There lies perhaps an implicit association between the two words within the context of the story.
Your further explanation of the current events precisely reflects my views regarding the nature of the story as a "past vs. moving on" kind of tale. "Real vs. illusion" is perhaps another way of putting it, especially with characters like Chizuru and Makoto living out their lives in denial, but the 'illusions' that each character carries are rooted in their past and their memories.
So yes... for me, going with the typical expectations for this type of story—plus, and let's face it, the views and odds levelled against the 'older woman' archetype—the likely or predictable route is Makoto's. That is, if the manga would have Rin end up with anyone at all.
FYI Volume 6 raws are out.

Oh snap! Rin sure has some bad luck. I am wondering how Kei's dress slit was on the other side when she put his hand in between her legs, but meh. And now that I think about it, the author is really good with cliffhangers.

The rest of volume three is out...
Whoa... this is the difference between shonen and seinen. There is depth here! Really funny how the power doesn't work on a woman when she's "past her prime" too. I do feel like Chizuru liking him is a cop out.
So Vol 7 is out in Japan for about a week or two now.
So it starts off where it left off last time.
Rin goes after Chizuru to use his Stigma on her. Of course, general "You just missed her/him" antics happen for a little bit. During this, we find out Chizuru doesn't want to go through with this either after meeting her mother. A bit more goes on and that evening Chizuru finds out Rin is there to meet here and is waiting at the boat dock in the snow. She gets there, he's not, she laments but he shows up behind her.
They confess to each other and they kiss. They then go back to the hotel and rent a really expensive room then foreplay happens for like more than 60% of the book with exposition and cute faces inbetween. Vol 7 ends with Rin in bed looking up and seeing Chizuru looking down at him saying "You can't sleep yet, the night won't last that long"
It's amazing how great Kitazaki is at making these situations so damn cute and funny. There's a lot of good exposition in there too about the characters feelings and etc. I don't have the book on me and I'm a bit too lazy to sum that information down at the moment though :heh:

The other day, I started reading Kono. I read all five volumes that have been translated, as well as the v6-7 RAWs; with the help of the summaries posted in this thread. (Cheers!)
Not content to leave it there before on-holding for months, I then searched to see if anyone had uploaded chapters from the yet to be released 8th volume. I then ran into a c75-80 download. And then the author trolled me...
At first, it continued where the previous volume left off (c74 wasn't included but was seemingly just another nothing foreplay chapter): more foreplay as Rin and Chizuru played around cutely, rather than rushing to get it on.
What happened next is on NTR levels. The rich doctor - now in full-on sinister face mode - turned up at the hotel; calling Rin out with a phone call. Rin left Chizuru to go talk to him, without telling her that the villain of the piece had arrived. Whatever Mr. Sinister said to Rin freaked him out completly; leading me to believe he told Rin that, regardless of her virginity, Chizuru would still marry him.
Rin went back to the room. The foreplay stopped and they talked on the bed; Rin hugging her from behind. Presumbly, he questioned her about whatever rich dick had told him, and she responded by turning round and crying. Rin then pushed her away and left the hotel.
Fast-forward to chapter 79-80. Chizuru is back at the hospital and Mr. Evil tells her to come to his room. She does so, and he then commands her to strip--which she does. c80 ends with Chizuri about to remove her bra--an infuriating NTR cliffhanger. I cried.
...Can anyone give a summary of 75-80, or at least explain wtf is going on with Chizuru's thought process? She moves back to be near Rin ASAP, leads him on, gives him the option of taking her virginity... yet she's intent on marrying some other guy, no matter what; just so her grandma can stay at the hospital when she's clearly hardly broke?... DOES NOT COMPUTE. Now that the end drama has come around and it's no longer lighthearted fun, Chizuru is seriously giving Kyoko from a Maison Ikkoku a run for her money in the indecisive bitch league.
Also: the manga IS now clearly winding down--the change of tone is proof enough of that as drama has now taken over. The endless foreplay without penetration, as well as Rin only ever loving and wanting Chizuru, make it near enough certain that she's going to pair-up with him, come the end... unless the author pulls an Ichigo 100% in order to troll everyone for lulz purposes. Usually there'd be a decent argument for the other childhood friend character in a manga like this, but even after getting... arse'd by Rin, Makoto still made it clear she didn't view him as a man/have romantic feelings for him. Unless the manga is extended to 15-20 volumes, there's no way any other ending but RinxChizuru would work. There isn't even another proper love interest for Chizuru since rich dick has started making sinister faces and doing nasty things.

Anyway, Chizuru's grandma means a lot to her. As it was established, after all the stuff that happened with her family, she went to live with her Grandmother which in turn provided her with a somewhat stable life that she didn't have. This allowed Chizuru to do what wanted and what she needed. She wanted to return the favor by taking care of her grandma during this illness. Even if she wants to be with Rin, she wants to help her grandma even more which is why she's going through with the marriage even if she doesn't want to.
As for what Dr. Jerkface probably told Rin, I would suspect it is the relationship between Chizuru's father and Rin's mother and the role that he had in her death. I won't know until I read it though.
I'll post a summary when I get the chance.
Also, I don't think the story will end until Kitazaki has resolved some issues with the Stigma. In particular, Makoto's issue hasn't been resolved yet, Takako's still scheming probably, and there's a few folks still afflicted with the Stigma.
We may end up with a Nijidama situation though, I think the author is pretty good about doing this sort of thing so it'll remain to be seen. As I mentioned in my previous post, Makoto's situation is a little muddled and we won't know what's true until it's been cleared some. Also, should the crazy thing happen, Chizuru not having another love interest doesn't matter.

Still not getting my head around the whole grandma thing. Why is marrying a playboy rich doctor she has no feelings for vital to the happiness of her senile nan? She's an adult woman who's had a stable, well-paying job for a number of years... surely she can cover the expenses of her nan on her own?
I've only read the first volume of Cupid, so my knowledge of that is limited, but there's a key difference between the supernatual problems in that and Kono: Cupid's issue is far more serious and problematic than having women accidently lust after the lead, after seeing his naked arse. For a young man, the threat of only being able to act like a man for five more times would ruin his life. The same isn't true when it comes to the risk of accidently instigating gang-rape sessions with a crowd of overly horny women. If anything, that's a positive ability to have for a hot-blooded guy!
My point? Cupid's "Rainbow Balls" issue had to be dealt with for it to end happily. The same isn't true of Rin's arse seduction method. I mean, how many women can he expect will see his naked arse, aside from his future beloved? One his waifu sees his bum and goes lust-crazy once, all would be well.
Until Makoto saw Rin's arse, there wasn't anything between the two other than friendship--nothing whatsoever. Neither party had any sexual interest in the other, resulting in zero sexual tension, and Makoto even stated that Rin's weak-minded personality was a turn-off for her--as well as later confirming, post-arsing, that she only wanted to do it with him once and didn't see him as a man--STILL.
I said the length of the series would need to double for a satisfying RinxMakoto ending because, up to yet, it's been ALL Rin>>>Chizuru. Some serious groundwork needs to be put in place for any other decent ending. Up to yet, it would appear that the author only had Makoto be arse'd for comic relief (/wetting her panties and orgasming when around Rin, with him unaware) and to have more chances to draw her in erotic situations. It doesn't strike me that he's planning on having her fall for him, after having sex once.
...Is Takako the lesbian? If so, her part in the story is already over, as far as Rin is concerned. She's now only around to talk with Makoto and occasionally 'ease her suffering' through lesbian activity. Once Rin discovered that she was playing him, she went bye-bye as far as the main plot went.
If the author is going to end the series with either the ninth (possible, since c80 isn't the final chapter of v8) or tenth volumes as I believe, there are only two things that really need dealing with... and he could very well avoid covering them. The first is Makoto's lust (he might just leave her suffer, for comedy purposes) and the second is Chizuru's wedding, which he may not feel the need to show. All I can say is that, if I were a betting man, I'd put money on this sinister rich dick NTR business being the endgame drama.
It seems you're more in the Makoto camp than Chizuru, and that's fair enough--even I like her personality. The thing is, unless the author is intent on fucking with the readers, 99% of the time it's obvious who the leads woman in a romance is going to be.
I haven't read much of Cupid, as mentioned before, but I got the distinct impression that the childhood friend would be the lead's choice, come the end. Why? Because the lead cummed on her face (/first intimate moment with a female) and he got with the long-haired rival at the start. I've read enough romance manga to know how it goes with first kiss/cum girls + early relationships.
In the case of Kono, Chizuru took Rin's first kiss, he remained a virgin for her for 22+ years and has only ever loved her. She's only ever loved him, in return. Throw-in the amount of foreplay/teasing without penetration, compared to the other girls, and his love rival having quickly turned into some kind of pantomime villain and I just cannot see anything other than a RinxChizuru ending. ONLY the main girl in a romance is allowed to mess around the lead as much as Chuzuru has.
...I'll end by saying this: if Rin doesn't white knight rich dick and he takes Chizuru's virginity/marries her, I'm dropping this with a score of 1/10. Seriously. I'm fine with the author not going with the obvious pairing but having the villain steal the woman from the lead of a romance is too far into trolling territory for me to handle.
I was ok with Chizuru inexplicably being set to marry a man she hasn't slept with and doesn't like, back when Kono was nearly all lighthearted goodness + sex. Now, though? I'm not liking how a 30-year-old woman is acting like an indecisve slut without a will of her own. My rage meter is currently high.
/end rambling
Erhm...
I tried the story based on your hints and reviews. I fought hard, I honestly did, but after 6 chapters I gave up.
My question to you: Is Rin going to grow something like a spine real soon? To be honest, he's ruining the show for me. He is the picture-perfect definition of a total coward, intellectually he's on the level of a juvenile, and I can see absolutely no redeeming qualities in him whatsoever.
Is this going to change, or is this farce going to continue longer like that? Because if it does...
Finally picked up Vol 8.
Still not getting my head around the whole grandma thing. Why is marrying a playboy rich doctor she has no feelings for vital to the happiness of her senile nan? She's an adult woman who's had a stable, well-paying job for a number of years... surely she can cover the expenses of her nan on her own?
Since I guess you can't read Japanese, the details are revealed in Vol 8.
She has to marry him because there's absolutely no way she could afford to treat her mother who isn't simply senile. Her grandmother has Balo concentric scleorsis, a form of multiple sclerosis. To prevent it from progressing and relapsing, she needs to take a lot of medications and rather expensive ones at that. Rin learns that his meager 3,000,000 yen would last a mere 3 months treating Chizuru's grandmother.
So choosing Rin would mean that she chose to kill her grandmother for her own happiness. Chizuru could never do that no matter how much she loves Rin. Ootori throws that in Rin's face to boot. Ootori is a mega douche but it's definitely not a one street, looking at it logically.
I've only read the first volume of Cupid, so my knowledge of that is limited, but there's a key difference between the supernatual problems in that and Kono: Cupid's issue is far more serious and problematic than having women accidently lust after the lead, after seeing his naked arse. Actually, the Stigma has many a minus to it too though perhaps not as evident. In fact, it may have worse consequences.
Even if Rin has the power to sexual attract women, that doesn't grant his underlying wish, to have someone actually like him from the bottom of their heart. This is the problem that came up with Takako. He used his power on her and he thought she was in love with him until his heart was crushed by her and her schemes in Vol 3. He actually liked her and it hurt him even more when he found it was just because of the Stigma, at least until the sex (then the evil kicked in!)
And that's the problem with this power. The emotions are fake as far as we know. If he was someone that just used his power for sex, but he isn't. He wants the emotion as well. So if he uses it, he'll lose sight of what he actually wants. On top of that, it's described as a bit of misfortune for the women because they could end up ruining their lives because of this.
Besides, both Rainbow Balls and Cherry Syndrome solve the disease/magic macguffin in the end so not clearing it up in Kono S would totally not be Kitazaki's style.
Considering how many have already seen it including one of the other main characters, it's going to have to be resolved in some respect for the story to finish.
Actually, this isn't necessarily true. It's a little more complicated than straight expression.
Makoto's thoughts and internal monologue are a tad bit unreliable. This is because she has a lot of uncertainty in her viewpoints. In fact, that's what's leads her to become afflicated with the stigma. She was unsure if she was affected and if her feelings and thoughts towards Rin were real or not. She was having them before seeing Rin's butt so she has to have had them in some form already.
This is touched upon in her monologue a little bit in Vol 4. She's so unsure of her emotions that she actually considers that all of the situations in her life has caused her to rebel, to go against what she naturally may have thought or wanted to do. She even says it outright on page 91 and 92 in Vol 4.
This also kind of makes her thinking after being afflicted a little suspect as her thinking is being guided by Takako by a little.
So saying that she doesn't have the sexual tension with Rin is true in the sense that it isn't overt but the possibility of her having feelings for him exists. This point is what will have to be cleared before the end of the series. She'll be a loose end if Kitazaki doesn't do something about it and he usually never leaves those hanging. I'm certain he'll make it clear whether or not Makoto's feelings are actually real after the curse is removed.
As she's the same aged childhood friend, she's not likely to get with the hero (damn tropes!) but she still sort of deserves a bit of resolution.
I said the length of the series would need to double for a satisfying RinxMakoto ending because, up to yet, it's been ALL Rin>>>Chizuru. Some serious groundwork needs to be put in place for any other decent ending. It doesn't strike me that he's planning on having her fall for him, after having sex once.
The focus has been Rin and Chizuru, indeed. However, He was super serious about Takako in vol 1 and 2 and had kind of given up on Chizuru until after the Takako incident. So Rin himself isn't exactly the most one-track minded person.
Kitazaki is also a very good writer and has made his twists and turns work well.
Especially since he paired Mutsumi in Rainbow Balls with his pseudo-childhood friend. They weren't even really that much of a couple throughout the series and he made it work quite well in the end.
...Is Takako the lesbian? If so, her part in the story is already over, as far as Rin is concerned. She's now only around to talk with Makoto and occasionally 'ease her suffering' through lesbian activity. Once Rin discovered that she was playing him, she went bye-bye as far as the main plot went.
Actually,
That's incorrect. She's still in the story because of what happens with Vol. 8. To earn enough money to support Chizuru's grandmother, so that Chizu doesn't have to marry Ootori, Rin teams up with Takako in her money schemes involving Rin's Stigma. That happens after where you stopped. I knew her money-making schemes/slight revenge was coming back. :heh:
It seems you're more in the Makoto camp than Chizuru, and that's fair enough--even I like her personality. The thing is, unless the author is intent on fucking with the readers, 99% of the time it's obvious who the leads woman in a romance is going to be.
It's 99% obvious who the lead women are but it's not 99% who will end up with who. That's the part of manga stories that are fun. Kitazaki hasn't really failed me yet with the twists and turns and I've been happy with the end of his mangas so I'm sure It'll be fine either way. It's just a matter of making sure everything is settled and made clear.
Watch the J-drama if you want to know what happens with the story as those have subtitles and the story is more or less the same (though there are some important differences). The manga hasn't been translated yet so you'll be lost just flipping through them.
FYI Cupid's Prank is the entire series of manga including Kono S, Cherry Syndrome, Ore x Yome, and Rainbow Balls. It's easier to figure out what you're talking about if you refer to the subtitle of each.
He indeed ends up with the girl he blew a load on that night. However, for most of the manga, the focus is almost entirely on him and the long-haired girl up until towards the end of the series where through many things and their natural relationship with each other, he ends up with the childhood friend. I absolutely love the big event between them at the end of the manga, great event IMO.
...I'll end by saying this: if Rin doesn't white knight rich dick and he takes Chizuru's virginity/marries her, I'm dropping this with a score of 1/10. Seriously. You should actually read what's happening before raging needlessly because it's rather silly. There are a lot of things going on and a lot of reasons for what's happening. It's not as stupid or silly as something like KNIM or GE. There are real reasons for what's happening and real problems associated with it. I mean seriously, Chizuru isn't a slut, indecisive, or doesn't have a will of her own. She's the exact opposite of that in fact.
Erhm...

Who are you talking to?
Personally, I think Rin is like any protagonist as he's continually growing and changing. So starting off as he has is kind of the usual starting point. The difference is that his background is usually more fleshed out and his problems are generally a lot more real than say a shounen lead. I mean it's a seinen series so the level of writing and issues tackled are generally totally different.
His attitude starts to change a bit in Vol 2 and his first real epiphany hits in Vol 3. He's a bit more confident and a lot less cowardly as a result of the first 3 volumes and he's kind of a different guy from there on.
I'd say Vol 3 is the cutoff point in whether or not to continue reading the series. Seems like a lot but a lot of what happens in the first 3 volumes are a bit connected so seeing it until the end is kind of a good idea. Plus, it shouldn't take you that long to get through 3 vols.
Cherry Syndrome, Kitazaki's previous Cupid manga is a little easier to get into as it has a little more of an offbeat set-up and the main male protagonist is a bit older and of a different cut compared to most. If you can read Japanese, I think Rainbow Balls is the best of his 3 big Cupid mangas. He starts off a little like Rin though but some of his coolness comes out a little faster, plus I <3 Asami.

Just read volume six and it was excellent. I love how the story was told from Chizuru's point of view, it really cleared a few things up. I knew Ohtori was a player but didn't expect him to make such a science out of doing it. Well, he is a smart doctor after all, haha.

Holy shit is Rin an annoying person . I can't stand him at all , but the plot development and all the characters make up for it so freaking well . I couldn't stop reading because of the chapters always leading me on '-' .
it looks really good , clearly needs more publicity .

Anyone inform me about the ending (if there is one)?
Scanlator dropped this a few months back.
Currently on 62 and hoping Rin ends up with anyone else than the predictable choice.

The latest - not the last - volume raw was nine, and things look to be getting even more complicated, if you would believe it.
And it wasn't dropped as such, more like the one guy - Hobo-1 - scanlating it (and Tomehane! , Cupid's Pranks Nijidama , and a few others), just completely disappeared without a word of warning.

Does she still seem like a hidden possible candidate for the protagonist or he set it straight with her that he is only in love with the doctor?
can someone tell me a summary of vol. 8 and 9?

Chizuru and Rin had sex and it seem the spell wore off and things got complicated.
If I recall correctly, Rin gotten closer to Makoto, but nothing sexual yet.
and Makoto father fell ill and was in the hospital. Rin was comforting her by holding her hand and Chizuru walk toward them giving Makoto a crazy yandere look~
She is crazy... Makoto is like a little sister to her too xD
Not much of a summary, but I only cared who ended up with who. Still the story seem to go beyond vol. 9.

so they going to hotel. hmm :naughty:
Wow, I read all the t/l chaps yesterday, I must say, I have rather mixed feelings regarding the unrequited love here. What I mean is that I want both Makoto and Chizuru to be happy, even though Makoto screwed herself over in this regard. Usually, I hate when a unrequited love goes completely unacknowledged, like with Makoto. However, I can't TRULY hate it because it was brought on by the power of the stigma. Even if the stigma's power is just a pretext for shattering her self-delusion that she only liked him as a good friend/brother-type, it's still hard for me to see her NOT get to sleep with Rin, or at least have Rin acknowledge her as a woman in some way.
Normally, I tend to hate protagonists that obsess with a single woman like Rin does to Chizuru, but here, it was done quite to my liking, as I wasn't annoyed a single bit by it, even before knowing about Chizuru's past.
Speaking of which, I was extremely amazed at how infatuated Chizuru was with Rin. Usually the scenario is that they were simply childhood friends, and that Rin had a crush on an older woman, whom he tries to get to see him as a man, like in, say, Maison Ikkoku or something. But not here. I REALLY like the twist that made her behavior seem like she had seen the stigma, but in actuality, Chizuru simply had a mental dependence on loving Rin. That made the quality of the story a HELL of a lot better. I'd normally be rooting for the other girl(Makoto), because I'd generally feel that the loved girl(Chizuru) wouldn't deserve the attention the guy is giving to her(usually the loved girl tends to maintain a barrier of non-lovers to keep their friend-relationship stable). Here, after seeing how yandere-like Chizuru was in regards to loving Rin, even when he was an infant, I can't help but want to see her get to fulfill that wish. Glad the current arc is finally giving her what she's waited 15 years for(well things could still go wrong, as of chap 70).

Does the manga explain why the doctor wants Chizu so badly? I feel like the way he treats her, she's nothing more than just another 'achievement' to be had, ie, the girl that nobody else can get. However, that doesn't mean he'd need to make her his wife.
Just seen the final chapter and in a nutshell...
Chizuru wanted to commit suicide at the end of the previous chapter by jumping off a cliff because well it's Chizuru and her so called pathetic martyr syndrome is strong...
Time skip ahead with the final chapter. It looks like Rin used his stigma on her to stop her from jumping. So he's blue-balled for life with him basically making her into his slave so to speak. I suppose it's his only way of controlling her from either trying it again or he's delusional, too. We're left to decide on that but that's what it looked to me. In the end they're both freaking crazy.

IIRC...
Rin and Mokoto did have sex towards the end and iirc afterwards she acted like it was the power of the stigma that made her love him or something like that. When in reality I think think she believed she'd never have a chance against Chizuru. So I guess she also played the martyr, but I liked her unlike Chizuru...
The only reason Rin hooked up with her was because Chizuru married that douchebag doctor and thought all was lost. Then I think it was partly Rin's dad and the douchebag doctor's mother that stepped in and said they would take care of Chizuru's grandmother. Freeing her from the douchebag's grip and being able to be with Rin, supposedly be with I guess...
After the time skip Mokoto is working at some pastry shop and still thinking of Rin. Honestly I think she was the only one that loved Rin without the need for the stigma. Then again I think she's better off without him...

There's a reason why Mokoto is the main perspective in the last chapter. Sad ending but what can you do love is really darn random and schizophrenic sometimes. Feel bad for the poor gal.
