If that is the case all the more reason to win out in this arc. If they can't beat that curse eventually the Nura bloodline will be lost. It can only dilute so much before they either won't have enough strength or be youkai enough to rule. Not that they should make choices purely based on that, but either the next generation or the one after will have to decide whether they want the youkai part of their bloodline to last or become so minimal it barely counts as existing.

The Nura clan finally landed in Kyoto. Slowly making way to Hagoromo Gitsune.
Onmyoji are in a serious pinch.. no match to the ayakashi, but Yura & the summoned guy could make a serious difference when they team up with Nura clan.

Does anyone know how many episodes are they going to release for the show? My usual sources are just showing 13 episodes so far (and Nayrael mentioned that the next one is a recap). It would really suck if the season ended on a recap.

As for episode 12, I feel that the music (or lack there of) is off this episode. I could not feel the same epicness of episodes past... well, at least until the end of the episode.

-We learn what Hagoromo-Gitsune wants to do with this world, mainly, wipe out a large portion of the human population, destroy modern architecture, and make the world like an old Kyoto.
-The political heads of Kyoto seem to know about yokais existing and the danger they possess.
-Kyoto is very much like Toono, in that it is filled with spirit energy. The yokais can walk around during the day at full strength.
-The planned counterattack will occur after the last seal as been broken, since Hagoromo-Gitsune will be most vulnerable at that time as she prepares to give birth at Niji castle to something terrifying to both humans and ayakashi.
-Yura Keikain is really cute as she is confused and flustered throughout the whole episode. She was thrust into the spotlight by Hidemoto Keikain as the user of Hagun, and then later, between the conversation by Yuki Onna and Hidemoto.
-Hagun and Nenekirimaru (Rikuo's sword) are needed to defeat Hagoromo-Gitsune, according to Hidemoto. As Hidemoto pointed out, it is more Yura and Rikuo are needed to defeat Hagoromo-Gitsune.
-Ryuuji Keikain spied on the whole conversation between Yuki Onna and Hidemoto. Now the question is, will he use it to help Yura and the Nura clan, or will he spin it around and do something devious again?
-Yuki Onna's declaration that Rikuo wants to protect people brings admiration to Yura and causes Hidemoto to feel he can rely on Rikuo.
-Tsuchi-Gumo, the giant yokai released after the last episode seal was broken, appears to be the next obstacle for the Nura clan. It will be a good way for Rikuo to power-up as well before his battle with Hagoromo-Gitsune.

Overall, it was another solid episode. Here is hoping that it will last a bit longer (ok, a lot longer).

Up till now, around 44 chapters have been animated. 44 more to go till we finish the arc and with it, the season (I'll guess it will stay loyal and not have an AO ending).

In comparison, whole first season animated less than 46 chapters. The difference in pacing is extraordinary ^_^;

:eyespin: That is so damn cool. I thought the slipcover would just have the logo on it to give a clean cover when removed, but this idea is even better. Oh man, makes me wish I went the extra mile and ordered from Tsutaya for those alt covers. Either way, I can't wait for my copy of the BD to arrive next week!

EDIT: Now Setsura's alt cover makes sense and is no longer screaming FOREVER ALONE XD. Vol.3 will most likely have Awashima and Reira on the slipcover so Rikuo can take Itaku's place with the alt cover. Yeah, I like the sound of that since it means clean cover with Itaku.

The music felt off at times, and the censorship was more noticeable then usual, but it was still good overall. Though I wish they spent a bit more of their animation budget on Awashima's fight.

I absolutely love both the OP and the ED :D The former is an excellent adrenaline pumping rock to kick start the show, while the latter is a smooth jazzy R&B tune to mellow down at the end :) Between this, Fate/Zero and C^3, there are really alot of excellent songs for Fall.

I loved the Awashima sequence - very creepy and fascinating. But what was the nature of the relationship between the Fushimi Inari youkai and the kid? Was he real, or a part of the youkai's persona? Was he alive or dead? I ask because once Awashima had defeated the youkai, the boy simply disappeared.

Fenrir_valindri

He was a normal boy trapped by the youkai and basically used to power it through his fear. I assume once the Youkai was defeated the boy was probably returned to where he got sucked in/to his mother.

not entirely certain:
there was a youkai in manga called Torianse the slasher - he was simmilar to this guy in that he made the fear of children he induced in them power/create his own little seperate world of fear. After he was dealt with the girls were freed, but only to move on to heaven... so dunno...was it shown in manga what happend to this boy, specifically? sry no time to find the chapter just now...

Was a pretty nice episode and got to see what Awashima can do. A very creepy kind of opponent to fight. Fighting someone head on is always preferable to this kind of situation. I mean your leg gets sucked into an area away from where you are and nothing can be done while an axe gets swung at it. Lot of spots where Awashima could have been completely taken out. Luckily got to see some fun fighting and was able to get out of that mess by comforting the kid.

Rikuo gets to meet up as well with Tsurara and Yura. Was funny to see the girls going at it and seeing those letters written by Tsurara :). Love the Tono figuring he was there to save Tsurara and then he just points that it was the other girl.

Animation was great this episode. Tsuchigumo utterly wrecked everyone, utterly humiliating the entire Nura Clan + the Tono group.
It really is frightening to think what would have happened if he had been present when Grandpa Nura challenged Gitsune in the past.

Don't worry, Hiroshi hates training arcs (tough he tries in Toono arc). We will get a little scene from time to time and in rhetorical Season 3 traininga will be completely skipped... in the way that we will find out that about trainings once they are done (which is a double-edged sword obviously).

Good ep, but I don't think the anime did a good job explaining these two things that puzzle me:

- Why did Tsuchigumo agree to let Hidemoto seal him - or what exactly was the trick Hidemoto used?

Nope, thats because the seal was restored and what made him stay in his Night Form is now removed (well, at least for this part of Kyoto).

Episode 16 aired.
As I feared, they did NOT explain the stuff behind Yosuzume and the Maou's Hammer...
*sigh* They are really are targeting this at people who READ teh Shikoku arc rather than at people who watched season 1 >_<

Anyway, I made a summary of stuff that was cut out from Season 1 so that you don't get confused or misunderstand something (I don't remember the whole season 1 so I will explain everything). I recommend you to read it:

Few centuries ago, the Shikoku Clan was a powerful Youkai Clan, constantly rising in power. One day, their ambitious leader (Tamazuki's father) decided to expand his power by attacking a human fortress (Nurarihyon offered his help but he rejected it fearing that he would get taken over by Nurarihyon's Fear and thus become his underling).

However, the humans somehow got a sword called Maou's Hammer and the Youkai invaders were utterly crushed, the Shikoku clan becoming pathetically weak. The Manga did not explain how they got the sword, but the Japanese mythology does: a youkai called Sanmoto Gorouzaemon, who claimed to hold a title of Maou (Demon King or Devil), took a disguise of Samurai and gave the humans the sword (I don't know why he did it, but knowing that the sword gets stronger the more youkai it hits, the reason seems might be obvious) so they could defeat the Shikoku Clan.

Not long before the present day, Shikoku Clan is still pathetic and only Tamazusa (who calls himself Tamazuki), the most talented of the former leaders children, believes that the Clan could still grow in power. For this, his siblings ridiculed him. Still tough, he never gave up on his dream and built his own Hyakki Yakou. Most prominent members were Yosuzume, a student who transfered to his school and ended up joining his Hyakki Yakou, and Inugami, a Youkai who didn't know of his own nature until Tamazuki made him to on a rampage and kill some of Tamazuki's human friends and who was persuaded than by Tamazuki to join his Hyakki Yakou.

Seeing the potential in this young Youkai leader, a traitorous member of Nura Clan's upper echelons (http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/3467/21427479.png) (his identity yet unknown) comes to Shikoku and gives Tamazuki the Maou's Hammer. Tamazuki uses his new power-up to further strengthen his Hyakki Yakou and slaughter his unambitious siblings.

At some point in the story, before or after he got the sword, Tamazuki was already the leader of Shikoku Clan. The traitor from Nura Clan asks Tamazuki to come to the Nura Clan turf, crush the Nura Clan while it is weak and thus start the restoration of the Shikoku Clan. Using his influence as the member of Upper Echelons, the traitor took care that Shikoku Clan enters the Nura Clan territory with minimal trouble. In return, one Tamazuki conquers the Nura Clan, the traitor would get a prestigious position in Tamazuki's clan.

When at final battle Tamazuki got defeated, Yosuzume took Maou's Hammer and left, betraying Tamazuki (http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/8201/nurarihyonnomagov06c470.jpg). She took the sword to the Nura Clan itself and gave it to a member of Nura Clan upper echelons, Mitsume Yazura (http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/8201/nurarihyonnomagov06c470.jpg). She addressed him as Sanmoto Gorouzaemon-sama and he removed a mask (tough it is not shown what is under it).

In summary, this Sanmoto Gorouzaemon, who calls himself Demon King, was pulling teh strings behind the Shikoku Arc. Also, do rewatch very start of Season 2 Episode 1 and look at the sword that loli Kitsune is holding: it is Maou's Hammer...
And now, in this episode you see that Sanmoto Gorouzaemon plays a role in Kyoto arc as well, using Minagoroshi Jizou who manipulated Kyoto Youkai's memories to replace Tengu with himself.

Sigh... maybe they'll have supplementary material for the anime to explain that bit.... oh who am I kidding.

Considering how good season 2 is right now I'll let that slide, since stuff like how Gagoze was killed by Rikuo or even the colour of Rikuo's clothes in flashbacks to season 1 point to the staff ignoring it completely so it shouldn't be such a surprise.

Honestly, 5 seconds is all it would take to at least show Yosuzume giving the hammer away if they wanted to skip the rest of the explanations. There wasn't actually too much left out of the first season regarding the hammer IIRC. Just mainly you know, Yosuzume's entire connection with it.

Well Aotabo removed his seal and was to fight again. Interesting how he's going to be fighting alongside an omyouji.

@ars89: He was asking Kidoumaru where is the Tengu and who is Minagoroshi Jizou (rewatch the Nurarihyon flashback and you will see that instead of Minagoroshi, the elder advisor was the Tengu). Kidoumaru didn't remember Tengu (who now helps Gyuuki train Rikuo) which shows that every Kyoto Youkai but Tsuchigumo got brainwashed by Minagoroshi Jizou. After that scene we see that Minagoroshi Jizou is part of another clan.

To better understand the situation, read my post above. Every Anime-only watcher should do it as some important stuff from Shikoku arc was cut out from Season 1 and Season 2 acts as if that stuff was not removed.

This is going to sound like a broken recorder, but yet another solid episode :)

Showing not only Kubinashi and Kejoro's past but Aotabō's as well, though the latter's story is pretty much revealed, it seems like there's more to Kubinashi and Kejoro than just their meeting with Rihan as shown after the credits... At least I was right to say that they definitely have a 'thing' ;)

But despite the good guys' hotblooded power-ups and teamwork, the Kyo-Yokai's mid level bosses aren't so easy to get rid off and the fight continues to the next episode with the standard Shounen cavalry.

I'm actually a bit suprised by the bond Kejero and Kubinashi have and I'm even more suprised to find out that they were humans and had known each other way back in those days.

Glad everyone was able to make a get away. Looks like Yura will have to take command now that the 27th heir is dead. So Tengu explains to Gyuki what he wants for revenge. Looks like Rikuo stumbled upon something at the end with the help of Zen. From the preview looks like RIkuo mastered his training is ready to take on Tsuchi-GOmo again.

Alrighty, we're now back on track to be kicking ass!

Rikuo got his mojo back and then some, destroying the Kyoto Youkai's bases all the way to Tsuchigumo to rescue Tsurara. Cue emotional moment between the two of them where Rikou asked Tsurara to give her body to him (Among other things but who cares?) and her reaction was adorable as she does no compute the whole thing :heh:

Next week should conclude the fight with Tsuchigumo I think, leaving just 5 episodes to wrap up this amazing season :) !

Nice that Rikuo finally learned the technique. So that's what that massive tattoo on grandpa's back is. Nice how they rolled through 3 seals before getting to Tsuchi-Gumo. Nope, Nurarihyon's tattoo is of different kind: it is a yakuza tattoo (for starters, he can't even use Matoi due to being a full Youkai while the technique requires you to have both human and youkai blood)

Is there a reason to require human blood? Or is it just a thing?

In short, Matoi makes up for lack of Fear that part-youkai have by letting the Youkai possess (like a demon) your human side and thus add his Fear to yours (I doubt Youkai can be possessed). This also has a nice consequence of having two kinds of Fear now thus he gains new abilities in Matoi form, depending on the Youkai with whom he is "fused".

Tattoo doesn't appear only during the Matoi but is always there and is updated whenever he does a Matoi with a new Youkai as a symbol of their trust and connection.

Well that was full of fun. Surprised that the grandfather went in there like that, but suppose it did make sense. Needed to confirm things and face the one who killed his son. Did pretty well there and gave Hagoromo-Gistune quite the shock at seeing him in his younger appearance for a moment.

Well at least Rikuo now has some serious power to tap into with this equip ability. Leaves quite the mark behind, but completely worth using. What a crazy enemy to be able to get up after being split like that, but at least he didn't want to keep going.

Now it's time to go right at the enemy. Rikuo's got to avenge his father and they might as well save Kyoto and everything else in the process :).

Yes, that was quite a fight. Now, it looks like the final battle.

Rikuo's Night Parade of a Hundred Demons looks like it has over 10,000 followers in that anime scene of the street.

I know this is a shounen Anime, but did they really have to pull out all the tropes and make it even more obvious than before :heh:? Team Rikou was really taking their merry time to decide how to fight Tsuchigumo- Half the fight was about that while the other half is the strong bromance between Rikou and Itaku, lets just say they were emitting something else other than Fear :p

The real surprise though was old man Nurarihyon showing up in the middle of the enemy's base and for the first time since the flashback arc that fox lost her cool :D

I randomly watched episodes 19-20 and thought this series is absolutely amazing (the music in particular). I only read the first 20 or so chapters so I kinda have an idea how everything works, and quick trip to wiki helps me not get lost just following the series from here.

Question being is it worth going back to season 1 and watch that? Also Yuki-Onna <3. Though I think the Grandpa is still sexier than Rikuo ... the outcry for him to stay in his younger form from the comments during the episode was hilarious.

It depends on how much you like the series itself. Season 1 is no where as good as this in terms of direction, animation and writing. In fact, they tried to make the more medicore part of the manga more interesting but ended up doing the reverse. I'd say if you're not interested in finding out the difference between the two seasons then just read the manga up till where season 1 ends and pick up the anime from there.

You can think of the first season as introductory to the characters and the setting, but in terms of story telling there's a very big gap in quality from the first and second mainly because the story in the second is alot more compelling I guess- this is like the Soul Society (Bleach) or Chuunin Exam (Naruto) arc if you want a straight forward comparison... Or if you're old school- This Kyoto arc is like the Kyoto arc from Kenshin ;)

P.S - These are the opinions of an Anime watcher, I never read the manga yet... But the end of this season might compel me.

The anime has always been rather good at adapting the manga designs and aesthetics, which was one of the things that drew me to it in the first place.

Can I say how impressed I am with DEEN? Seriously, this is probably one of their best TV series in a long, long time. I'm just amazed how much effort they're putting into this season. It's so much better than their normal standard.

The designs are great, the adaptation of the source is pretty good and the actual animation has more effort than most of their recent series. Sure it's not brilliant all the time but they deliver it very well when it counts. At the very least there's certainly far more animation and nicer direction than the first season ever had.

Hell, this episode trumps anything the entire first season by production standards alone. That scene with Hagoromo Gitsune with a pinned down Rikuo and the falling shards was so freakin pretty to look at with how they handled the lighting and everything. Yura activating Hagun was marvelous too. They even bothered to animate Gashadokuro in proper 2D for his final showdown with Aotabo. I could hardly believe this is DEEN's work.

This was definitely a well done episode. Gives you a "hey what!?" Response when she called out "father" when they finally got that hit in on her. Not sure if she's Rikuo's biological sister since some of what was said makes it sound like she was a girl Rihan found and raised. Still if that's the case she was certainly a good choice for someone to reincarnate that'd be able to attack the 2nd heir.

Anyways some great action there. Took a lot to get a hit in on that girl but they finally did it. Of course they needed help from those memories to shake her enough for it to work. A kind of funny moment that after all those years of work she just gets dumped to hell afterwards :heh:.

Wow that was actually a perfect plan by Seimei and Minagoroshi. Sad past about Yamabuki. Looks like Rikuo is going to use matoi with everyone.

So there is one more ep!

Wait, you serious? Because this doesn't happen in the original story.

Either way, we are getting DEEN'd.

Oh you've got to be kidding me. Right after I gave them all that praise for the previous episode? Goddamn. orz

EDIT: Okay, that wasn't bad actually. It was nice seeing nearly all the character's attacks and also for some of Nurarihyon's hyakki get some action, however little it was. Did Hitotsume use a gun in the manga's present time too? I don't remember. Anyway it's still possible to end the same way as the manga arc, so I'm actually cool with this episode.

Everything was more or less the same after Tsuchigumo got taken out, except Yamabuki's flashback happened earlier. Plus Sanmoto got the full mention as well. It looks like they just want to make Seimei have a long last episode boss-like fight. As long as the writers don't pull some asspull like having Rikuo matoi with everyone and Seimei get's dues ex machina'd, they can still end the season without major contradictions to the canon. Ideally all they have to do is make the fight flashy, then everyone get's their ass kicked by Seimei. Then his arm decays which forces him to temporarily go back to hell and we're back on track. DEEN, please don't screw it up even if there are no plans for a third season.

I'm almost certain there wouldn't be a third season, so ending must be on a more conclusive note.

Ok, I'm surprised

they followed the manga in the end instead of opting for an original ending

not only that, they added original elements that made a great closure.
Ie; they didn't screw up. In fact, they did quite well.

I almost forgive them for the mishandling of the Kyoto arc

No idea what the count is on the episodes anymore. So Seimei just wasn't ready for the world yet. At least buys more time for Rikuo to get stronger. Like the scenes when Rikuo was dreaming. Alright he's officially the head now!

So there's still another ep?

Glad the staff didn't go for the usual routine of ongoing animes. This kind of strategy for Nurarihyon no Mago seems effective compared to other anime with bothersome fillers, since third season is slated in July 2012. One thing that I hate, the recaps. Those recaps are not necessary.

I haven't heard anything official, but I wouldn't be stunned if this got a third season. Unlike some series I don't think this one needs to move a ton of DVDs to pay for itself - its job is basically to get decent ratings, sell a few Blu-rays and mostly to help drive manga sales. I think by those standards it's done OK.

That was actually a pretty nice conclusion. I was a bit worried the whole carrying everyone's fear at once would settle things, but luckily Nue wasn't that easy to bring down. It really set up a battle down the road.

Nice to have a little scene with the three generations though it was a bit odd :heh:.

Overall I'm really happy with how this second season went. Way better than the first.

Chaos2Frozen
2011-12-20, 02:39
I have abit of mixed feelings on this conclusion- On one hand this incident end smoothly with no real jarring issue left behind. But on the other hand, our heroes wasn't able to so much as even dent the big boss and they just sort of lucked out.

The whole Rihan-Otome relationship was very tragic, but I'm curious what's Rikou's mother's thoughts on all this?

In any case looks like I would have to eat my words about no third season...

Final impression? A clear improvement over the first season in every possible way, but the concluding boss fights was abit... How do I say this? It's follows the 'mid-point-major-battle' formula perfectly, almost to the letter. Whether this is good or not I can't decide yet, but in any case this is definitely one show that I would recommend to people... Assuming they got past the first season.

Just watched the two last episodes, that was definitely quite an intricate plot...too bad the fight was as dull as the story was interesting. Overall it was a very good season, much better than the first one, and if I liked something about the ending, it was definitely Rikuo becoming the third, unlike a certain "tenth" boss who's been dodging responsibility for 366 chapters now. Off to read the manga now :)
I'm curious what's Rikou's mother's thoughts on all this?
Curiosity seconded, she can't have possibly been left in the dark about it, unless Rihan met her many years after Yamabuki Otome disappeared, but even so...

Mothers typically don't get much airtime in shounen, but I'm also genuinely curious about Wakana and she's desperately underdeveloped. Did Rihan have any feelings for her, or did he simply need an heir? How does she feel about her son being the Third Heir?

If you want to know so bad, then read the manga. If not you'll have to wait patiently till the anime adapts that chapter.

Marathoned the last 4 episodes this afternoon. If I could have 1 change to what they showed, I would have liked a bit more of Rihan and Yamabuki's past history -- both as a couple and as the short time when she was resurrected into the younger form. I don't know if the manga goes any further into their story, it probably doesn't, but I hope it does because I want to know more.

I know many people were disappointed with season 1. I wasn't, but I fully agree with everyone who's said that season 2 was head and shoulders above season 1. A season 3 would be very welcome.

The latest special was pretty much a recap of what happened in the series recently.
Well, it was pretty good, but also interesting how they can put the entire second season into just one episode-summary.
At least it had all the cool action parts ^-^
I must say that Nura's yokai self is really beautiful & cool, my fav character too!

Having recently gotten around to finishing the manga and watching the final OVA. I can finally bid farewell to this series. ;__;

The story took place in Tohno and marked the beginning of the Nura Clan's formation. It was really amusing to see that its very first member was Natto Kozou, which explains why they are so close enough to go to Shikkoku together.

Anyway the story is pretty straightforward: Nurarihyon and Natto dine and dash at what I think should be the sweets shop that Rikuo and gang go to in Tohno later in the manga. They get attacked by Ko Oni, Tofu Kozou and Te no Me (those three small youkai who always hang around each other) who're surprisingly decent fighters but get taken down. They were trying to prove their worth so they can join the Tohno and Nurarihyon being Nurarihyon, decides to take them there himself and asks the Tohno to take those three in. He gets sent to Mayoiga (like grandfather like grandson!) to rescue some Tohno members who got lost. Setsura watches the whole thing from afar. San no Kuchi turns out to be the one controlling Mayoiga (this is the part where my jaw dropped :heh:) and Nurarihyon gets everyone out of it. However the Kamaitachi of that time (I forgot his name) kills the rescued members and fights Nurarihyon because he views weaklings as useless and unnecessary. Setsura and the trio try to help but Nurarihyon ends up injured rescuing them instead. Cue Setsura going kyun for him for the very first time. The two continue fighting and talking until Nurarihyon declares he'll shoulder all weak youkai from now onwards and for thousands of years to come, which brings Natto Kozou and the others to tears of admiration and respect. There's a neat moment where flashes of future scenes flow out of his fear as he gives his grand speech. The Kamaitachi is defeated and the Tohno agree to accept the trio but they + San no Kuchi want to follow Nurarihyon instead while Setsura spends the whole scene looking at him like a schoolgirl in love.

Epilogue shows that the OVA is actually being told by Nurarihyon to Rikuo and Rihan in that dream world from the last episode of the second season. They share a brief family moment before Rikuo leaves. The last scene of Rikuo and the comrades he's made by the end of the manga feels like a very definite way of saying this is the end of anymore animated Nuramago. T^T

I just saw Setsura's OAV on a certain streaming site

It actually tells quite a lot

Yamabuki Otome died with Setsura by her side.

As per her request Setsura keeps this a secret from Rihan, but eventually he tells him one day, once she notices that Rihan never stops waiting for Otome

This makes Rihan very upset. He goes berserk for a moment and strangles Setsura.

After that things become too awkward for them, so Setsura leaves the Nuragumi HQ and doesn't return until the final arc of the manga.

A few years after she leaves, a young Tsurara arrives at Nuragumi's gates wanting to join the clan
