A relax episode or a breather this one. Really prefer the tense and action pack episodes. Overall, the only thing I got from this episode is Cryska is showing love emotions, Yui has progress as a character, and gotten me interested in Mapo Tofu. Looks delicious right?

I figure this ep, in the light novels, had the same role as the beach episodes: buy Kouki enough time to plan out the next arc (given that from all I've seen and read, apparently the serial novel was supposed to end at Episode 5).

This was a fun watch. I have no problems with this episode. It's a nice to see everyone interacting.

It makes the tournament a bit more interesting since we see the minor characters hanging out with the main cast.

What they could have done to make it even more hilarious was have Yuuya find himself accidentally going to the girls section and hearing things that he didn't want to hear along with V.G. and Vincent while they hide or run away from the BIG WAVE. I was cracking up at the subtle drumming that was playing right when Garios got them in his clutches.

When things started to get "dangerous" on the trail, Yuuya (Maverick) and Leon (Ice Man) teamed up to face an unknown enemy (MiGS).

Leon looks like he's trying to hold onto the grudge, but he noticed that Yuuya really changed and now he's having a hard time accepting it.

He was probably thinking, "If he could change, maybe I can too! I'll surpass him and be celebrated just like him!"

I'm just going to quote the relevant bits of a post I made 2 weeks ago about this:

Thus TE is very much a sidestory to the actual war against BETA, but it doesn't mean their work in Project Prominence isn't as important. Another analogy is a film about the Spitfire development and improvement team contrasting The Battle of Britain.

TE has been compared to Macross Plus, and that's an apt description - this is not a big war story, but a more personal story set against the backdrop of war. We can see an underlying theme of identity and an uncertainty of self, something that Yuuya and Yui struggle with on a regular basis. That is - so far - one of the core themes of TE.

If I were to sum up the series as an Armor Piercing Question, Extra asks the question, "Who do I love?" Unlimited asks the question "How do I survive?" Alternative asks, "How do I overcome?"

Total Eclipse's question is more personal: "Who am I?"

I think it really says all that needs to be said.

Really? That's interesting; what I'd read on Type-94 blog was that the beach episodes were to buy time while he plotted out the main story. I kinda see the onsen story as him coming up with something quick and easy to give him more time to prepare for the next episodes - which, if the Kamchatka arc is anything to go by, is probably going to be very interesting viewing.

As an aside, their rifles look to be the G36K carbines, rather than the G36C.

This is where I'm at a crossroads. The Blu Rays notched the GORE up to 11, and I just don't know if I have the stomach for it. But at the same time, that fanservice is so good, its gonna be hard to pass up.

Anyway, very funny episode. The little ecchi pair Vincent and VG makes really works well, and found their entire scene hilarious. When Cui put the bowl in Yuuya's face, and we got a shot of the passed out members who ate it with that scream sound effect, I lost it. Was tearing up from laughing so hard.

Then once again, Yuuya gets to be the lucky bastard. Got to feel all up on Cryska, and he wondering what happened...no buddy, you need to be trying to take it further.

I still stand firm in my belief that I feel if Yuuya ever stepped up to Stella requesting a make out session, she'd give it to him. She even mentioned how she thinks he's cute. Something tells me you can bang her in the game.

Even though some will only see this as a pointless fanservice episode, the premise was brilliant, and was an overall good idea. It really DOES make sense to have these kind of hangout sessions where the different countries can spend time with each other and relieve stress. It really does suck when you have so much hostility towards other groups when you need to work together to beat the bigger issue, which is saving your existences.

But the lack of action war scenes don't really bother me since I was strictly told that this is the behind the scenes story, and not the actually battlefield where sh%t is real.

Yes. If you want Beta than there's other Muv-Luv sources for that. If TE does well enough than the Beta infested ones(That seem to still have harem in it) may be next in the line for animated works.

I've long passed the point where I could easily be amused by cheap harem hijinks and characters being degenerated into soulless Japanese stereotypes. This episode and the beach episodes make Muv-Luv Extra look like a masterpiece, and I do fully realize the irony of that statement, but it's true.

I'm not necessarily looking for more gore, despair, and BETA swarming; that's not what Total Eclipse is about, and it's not what Muv-Luv is really about either. I just want the international cast of characters to be compelling and charming, and not insult the mind of anyone who has stepped outside of Japanese soil. I also want the conflicts in this anime to be carried out without ghastly cliches and unnecessary harem tropes ruining everything.

Well, this will probably be my last rant on this series. Even if the last set of episodes are fun and exciting (which will probably be the case considering the previous layout of episodes), they won't sway my opinion very high.

Well, Yui is acting like a virgin and most likely is. So I wouldn't count her off from swinging to the other side just yet. Especially after being naked in a Hot Spring while surrounded by a ton of beautiful women.

Don't agree with that...even though it came off as a filler episode, it did have a point which they addressed at the beginning of the episode. The UN did not like the growing hostility between the different groups, which we've seen for ourselves for a few episodes now (Cui's group going at it with others, Leon's group being looked at negatively by others, and even Yuuya's group).

So them having fun frolicking was kinda the point, ease the tension and let everyone do something to better socialize with each other. Even Cryska who is known to be pretty cold was able to mesh in with the girls. And the "big bad americans" don't looks so menacing as they did, they are pretty much cool people other than the Leon vs Yuuya thing. But even, Leon himself is a pretty decent person.

Wow, this show is bad. I mean, I hardly expected a masterpiece even with the best execution, but this show just reminds me why I stopped watching anime in the first place. Am I really asking too much from a show to at least not actively try to insult my intelligence? Or at least a semblance of creativity, instead of overused, irritating cliches? Just because you offer lots of boobs doesn't mean you can't at least put some effort into not being retarded.
There is no way you can take anything seriously here. The plot is almost non-existent. The characters are childish, but then what would you expect from a harem? I got the impression that Yui was supposed to be a mature leader, but she acts inexperienced and submissive. She practically lets herself be dragged around by subordinates who are supposed to respect her. And Cui, Jesus Christ. I guess it's hot to think that she would marry the first person who defeated her. What a great reason to devote your life to someone and follow them around like an irritating pup, when the person doesn't even reciprocate her feelings or wants to have anything to do with her (oh, but the audience does, and that's the reason why everything happens in this show).
It doesn't even deliver on the T&A department, because the animation is so laughable and derpy most of the time.

Most guys wouldn't be interested in seeing a realistic female friendship (which is pretty much 99% of female relationships) when they can have a more sexualized variant, one in which the girls are just waiting for a chance to molest one another. What I would really like would be for TAFiA to be animated, but it's an anthology of sidestories and there's little that connects it.

Whereas Alternative arcs felt like connected to each other, it's not much the case with Total Eclipse, where it really felt like each arcs are published in a magazine before getting serialized. I think Kouki does need a beta reader to see how smooth the transitions are, no pun intended.

well Harem antics are needed in alternative to lighten up the mood. If you stay lonely and sad a certain hot headed storm vanguard would punch you. being sad is not needed in front line and specially in special task force.

But here in Total eclipse that's not the case at all!!! though I'm beginning to question. When TE is starting I heard its adapted from a novel then their is a manga where the novel stops though I'm not much informed other than that. Are they still adapting the novels? because next episode is a filler episode again. It just felt that they are stretching it far too much before the battle with the infinities. I even start thinking the studio had already given up on it. Specially in some scenes where the animation is totally off. Its like they aren't even giving an effort on it.

I've lost complete respect for this anime. It went from serious - mature animations to cartoony Infinite Stratoes facial expressions. The inconsistencies are so vast it seems almost schizophrenic.

Not only that, they'd failed to give critical details from the novel. I only see this anime as a means to "advertise" for the game that is coming up which is the Ending, but COME ON! Who would care if they don't even understand the story that leads up to the game? [mod edit: removed reference to events not shown] Who would be willing to pay for that game in order to understand whatever vague events this anime fails to mention.

Anyways, much disappointed. Sword Arts is the only thing I'm following up and it also has that Novel - to inconsistant adaptation that Total Eclipse as. One must read the novel in order to fully understand what the heck is going on.


I would watch Gundam Wing and other old animes where each episode has something happening where it FEELS like an adventure. I dont see that in Total Eclipse. Episode 3 seems to be the exact same as episode throughout to the current one. I don't see an adventure. >.<

Give it a rest. Satelight Proved that they can produce a quality consistent work with Moe Pirates. The results we get, are to the director pissing away the budget in Yui's prologue.

There are about 110 minutes in the 5 episodes left (20, 21, 22, 23, 24). That's the same as a normal-length movie. There is plenty they can do to save this.

When Cryska went into the mens side and approached Yuuya there was an scene full of steam shown twice and then Yuuya says something like "what did I saw?". Anyone knows about it? I have some suspicions but I it can't be *that* so if anyone has any info please do share.

Give it a rest. Satelight Proved that they can produce a quality consistent work with Moe Pirates. The results we get, are to the director pissing away the budget in Yui's prologue.

Yes, so much this. It is not Satelight's fault that the production committee raised the industry's equivalent of three hundred yen, a candy wrapper, and some scattered pocket lint to create this series. There's only so much they can do with no money.

(This does nothing to excuse the excursions into fanservice harem antics better suited for Extra or Lt. Cui's general stalker antics, but those, again, are the fault of the original writer.)

...clip show next week to save more money, but hopefully they can use that kind of thing to scrape up enough cash to do the Argos/Infinities fight and, hopefully, the culmination of the Yuuya-Leon arc some justice. There's been plenty of good stuff in the Blue Flag arc, and I'd like to see more of that.

fun episode i was amused. I swear everyone in this show has never seen a naked body before. Cryskia has an excuse and man oh man her Soviet Ice Heart seems to be melting after each episode. The way she reacted with Inia held Yuuya's arm was the sign of a serious jealously and she doesnt even know and Yuuya getting to 2nd base with the least friendly of all the girls by accident is a feat within itself.

Im starting to like Bao Feng flight even more they are funny as hell and color consideration ftw. Turns out there is at least one normal one is the group.

Well, I'll say this - I liked this episode a lot more than I did the last fanservice-driven episode.

The fanservice in this episode had a certain style to it, and I just felt that the comedy and plot elements were a bit tighter here.

Mr. Duke Nukem Wannabe once again is at the center of the fanservice exploits, but his grand plan here was at least amusingly clever, and not as facepalmingly straightfoward as the last fanservice-driven episode.

And I'll admit that the yuri fan in me greatly appreciated a certain yuri dream moment. :heh:


As fanservice breather episodes go, this was a good episode. Kind of amazing that you'd follow a breather episode up with a freakin' recap, though... :heh:

I am glad that we finally got the naked cryska/yui calendar, like we wanted in the previous fanservice episode; we also got some naked loli and china as omake. Even if the frontline soldiers only eat synthetic food they will have some great sidedishes.

Hell id watch it, i can see that being funny as hell. The Harold and Kumar of the anime world.

Yea "Bait" is the right word. Cryska has it bad and the best part is she doesnt even know or understand it. Which is fantastic because we as the viewer get to see a huge range of emotion from her. Yuuya is not only building a harem unwittingly but hes building a damn international harem he gets to sample the cuisine of multiple nations (if he wanted) im all down for that.
