Well, well, well, I wasn't expecting myself to post here again, but it doesn't fell right to see posts about the KonoRano in different topics (2012 (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=3860122#post3860122) & 2013 (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=4440421#post4440421)) every year. I don't what it's the difference between the HP votes and the "monitor" votes so I can't comment about it, but it's fun to see how the ranking would be in different cases. Btw, I'd prefer to see two rankings instead of only one: A HP ranking to see my favorite series and a Collaborators ranking to search for new titles to read.

True Position - Total Points - HP Points (Internet? votes) - Collaborators Votes - Monitor (?) votes

The "monitors" group is kind of like the target demographic group. They are light novel readers who are between 12 to 18 years old and read at least 51 light novel series in a year.

Interesting. I'm planning to read Ben-To, but I'd like to read No Game No Life also.

Glad to see DxD and Mahouka's illustrators at the top :3

Surprised to see issei in the top 30 and tatsuya in top 10

Tatsuya is getting more fans (even some fujoshi whom are uploading some disturbing images with him in yaoi-mode D: ).

In the end, a thread for KonoRano was eventually formed :heh: Now this is awkward since we've spread the discussions over the New Release thread as well as Index Light Novel... :eyespin:

Ah what the heck.... this isn't the first time I've copy pasta-

Yeah, she's not letting go any time soon... You know, if Asuna REALLY wants to beat Mikoto, what she really needs to do is stop appearing so much... :p

*copy pasta*

Given the undeniable massive rise in popularity, the only thing the rest of us needed to speculate is who's going to be second place :p But as it turns out, we didn't need to do that either :heh: so we'll move on to third place :heh:

六花の勇者 is this year's 'Circlet Girl', with massive support from the collaborators but barely any from the public or that third party.

Baka-Test isn't going anywhere as expected.

OreImo and Durarara triumphantly reclaimed their position back in the top 10.

OMG! Horizon actually broke into the Top Ten :eyespin: LOLOLOL...!

AW almost halves it's distance from SAO, but still not it enough... I doubt it would get a chance like this again until three years later.

Ben-to fell like a rock, Haganai even worse.

Kokoro Connect keeping it steady.

Kino isn't going anywhere.

For completion sake...

The remaining 40 on the list... Still no Heavy Object  Though I recognized a few new titles just out this year...

25. Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita - Apparently people like the Anime a lot.
26. Shakugan no Shana - Hang in there Shana :eyespin: !!!
28. Oda Nobuna no Yabo - Quite a leap from last year :)
32. Hidan no Aria - You're still here :eyebrow: ?
34. Black Bullet - Shrugged.
37. Magdala de Nemure - From Spice&Wolf author, not bad for a new title
40. Date a Live - Apparently people are looking forward to it's Anime?
41. Monogatari Series - How did YOU get 80k+ dvd/BD sales :eyebrow:
42. Gakusei Shoujo - Kishida Mel and Sugii Hikaru, that's all I got.
43. BACCANO! - You're still alive?
49. Papa no Iu Koto wo Kikinasai! - :twitch: :twitch: :twitch:
50. Rental Magica - OMGOMGOMG! NOT DEAD YET :hyper-^v^: !
52. Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko - Apparently people are looking forward to it's Anime... Eagerly.
55. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo - Why you so far down :T_T:
56. Highschool DxD - Just die already! Mummy never loved you :frustrated:!
58. Campione! - Oh there you are.

With Progressive now helping to milk the series for years to come, I suspect the top 2 positions to be lock in eternal battle between SAO and Index for a long time. Its quite possible for Mahouka to break the deadlock when it finally gets an Anime... After all people responded well to Kirito so I expect no different for Tatsuya since they're both cut from the same haxx cloth.

Now Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come ga Machigatteiru? That's one of the biggest surprise this year- coming out of almost nowhere it easily broke into the top ten for all categories. To me it feels (as in my gut feeling) like the new Haganai, hopefully it avoids the mistakes of that one... Speaking of Haganai, that series dropped really fast after a promising leap two years ago... The only thing holding it in place are its two Heroines.

As I've talked to Kuro before, there are some questionable zero votes from the critics... Titles like DxD and Papakiki getting zero votes are normal, but when titles like Durarara, Baccano, Kino, AW, Kokoro Connect, Sakurasou gets zero support, things start to get eybrow-raising-worthy.

Yeah, it will be hard for Gakuen no Toshi to be in Top 15. Though it wont be hard to be among Top-60. The only LN from MF that can be placed in Top-15 is Haganai.
Despite my love for Fujimi Shobo, it feels hard for even one of their LN to be placed among top-20. Well, unless Saenai Heroine gets insane support that is.

I think Mahouka can break into top 5 at least (even SAO was ranked 1st for the 2012 poll before its anime was announced), and . And given how heavily marketed Mahouka was in the past year (to wit, they had a company-wide promotion of Mahouka at Kinokuniya in August this year), I think it should be high on the collabarators' list at least (and I would be somewhat surprised if Tatsuya doesn't hax his way over Accelerator this year at least)

I think the one that really came out of nowhere was Rokka no Yuusha (and it might slip up a little this year, but the story is still good), but honestly,

Some predictions on my side.

>Shinonome Yuuko and Sakurada Reset aren't going to be on the poll this year (well duh, there's no production this year.)
>Oreimo should be right in the top 5 mix (and gone next year:heh:)
>Baka Test will slip out of top 10
>Lost Love Detective (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwVt0m2ZeUEAOXp1c1pmYmRKQnM/edit?usp=drive_web) will be in the top 30 at least. (Hey, it won a Dengeki novel prize at least. They'll market it.)
>Aldermann might make it into top 10 this year.
>Magdala for top 20 (I honestly hope it can make it to 10 at least. This one is good.)
>This will be Kokoro Connect's last hurrah. Top 15.
>Index will slip this year (yes, I said it:cool:). Partly the reason is because the action sequences has been getting overly complex as compared to previous volumes (look at NT 7 for example)
>AW will barely make it into top 10 this year.
>-Gatari will still not get enough love.
>Kino has, and will be like Gengar and Starmie, always in the OU top 20.
>Top 10: SAO, Mahouka, Index, Oreimo, Oregairu, Rokka:heh:, Horizon, Accel World, Aldermann, NGNL

Now, let's see how many of my guesses are correct.

Indirectly it means alot more people have read it.

But they have a system in place to mitigate any risk of this being just a popularity contest.

Zefyris
2013-11-09, 10:57
you need to differentiate the titles which managed to get a good spot because of the readers and the titles which managed the same due to being mostly voted by the people from the industry.
Rokka is from the second type. While ranking third last year seems to have helped its sales this year (volume 4 ranked in the weekly oricon ranking pretty easily in late july), it's nowhere near popular enough to manage that kind of ranking again without the help of the voters from the LN industry. Meaning that since those voters will probably want to continue supporting massively different titles every year, Rokka no yuusha will go down in the ranking and may even not rank at all.
Sakurada Reset for example was mostly in the ranking due to the same reason so goodbye to that title as well.

Titles that rank well several years in a row in the ranking are those who ranks due to sheer popularity and therefore sells a lot by volume. Hence SAO, mahouka, index, oreimo, accel world etc. will get good ranking in mostly every category like last year. Some titles that have been around in the top 20 for years will probably manages to remind there as well, like kino no tabi.
Mixed with them in the top 15 may be a few new title which become more popular lately (due to anime or something else), and a few "obscure" titles that will have received lots of votes from the LN industry.
The most interesting part of the ranking for me will be those unexpected obscure titles, as they'll probably be worth checking out.

Well, no. The character poll is only composed of characters from the series selling the most. Most of them don't even deserve to be in a top 1000 of the best character in light novels ImO. When you see a character like Touma who has almost no character development besides being the main character in most of the 30+ volumes of index being ranked in the top 3 for years, I pretty much consider the character ranking to be complete crap. Now if good characters from less known series were appearing in it, that would be another story, but not with the way that poll currently work. Contrary to the LN poll, the characters poll is merely based on fans voting, so the titles selling the most are the only one competing. Although that ranking can be used in between the characters of the same series to compare who are the most liked from a given series, I suppose.

Oh, but I also agree with that version. In the index novels, Misaka is a bad side character. But at least, Kazuma has the excuse that this character is not being even one tenth as present as touma is. Misaka's character's development is mostly in the railgun manga btw (the two railgun LN are fairly good compared to the average quality of index LN imo, but there's isn't especially any character development for misaka in it). So as a light novel character, Misaka is bad and as such from my point of view shouldn't even be voted for in the kono light novel wa sugoi's character poll.
And I'm saying that even though Misaka is one of my favorite characters, BTW.

BTW: how do some users manage to have several lines of text on the side of a single image in their sign? I don't get how you do that ^^"

Yes! I certainly am tired of seeing her name for 5 years straight as the no.1 female character.
Actually, thats the main reason I started about her Asuna beating her in character poll. Im not a big fan of Asuna either. But seeing Misaka getting taking no.1 position when her character is quite ordinary is quite uninteresting. I just didnt want to sound too negative or look like anti-Misaka. Its just that I wanted to see some change for once.

Oh, true. Henneko slipped out of my mind. I also realsied No Game No Life ranked high last year. I wonder if their rank would go up? Its getting an anime adapation, but it hasnt aired yet. So I wonder if their rank will still get higher.

Character development is overrated from my point of view.

You have several way to do a good character, and character development is only one of them indeed. It's not overrated however, as it's a really important factor when creating a character if the character settings at the start are simple.

Simply put, if your character isn't going to grow up during the story, it either means that right from the start the setting are complex and the character is deep (or original, for example ) enough to not need it, or that... you basically failed at creating your main character.
When you have a character like kujou minato from reinousha minato for example, you don't need to have character development for him. Because he's good from the start( More like, in his case, he's beyond awesome from the start). However, this isn't the case for Touma. He has no depth; his personality isn't anything rare in LN either, and on top of this has lost his memory so no past for more than 30 volumes. With such start, such simple an cliché setting ; creating a good main character is akin to say giving that character a lot of good character development because he will need to move out of that cliché setting during the story and become a character worth following. If he's just your average main cliché character for 30 volumes, then any reader who have read enough novel will probably hold no interest at all in him. So if the author fail even at this, then I don't see how the character can be seen as anything else than a complete failure as a main character worth following.
Hence, the fact that Touma got almost no character development (and no, it's not the little bit that he got since the start of the shin'yaku series that will change the fact that he didn't got any at all for like more than 15 volumes in a row in the first season) is a lethal failure as a main character.

Well, that's my opinion anyway.

Kenju of the Right
2013-11-10, 05:45
Except there are plenty of people that take an interest in him this far through the story.
You say that a lot of things are cliche but that's just you and it's pretty vague description. It's your opinion that's fine

Though, I'd disagree about the 'no character development', Touma has always had development. Not in his overall character but instead it's been his views that have been developed and created which are formed through his past experiences. These speeches that he makes don't just come out of nowhere.
near the beginning(no memories) he started at about 0, no beliefs at all however at the end of the Old Testament he has the insane view that saving the world is unnecessary when you can save a single person's 'world'. Though despite his views, he will not let them hold him back

but this thread isnt about him so lets not drag it on

Last I've heard it did average on sales.

For all we know it could be the collaborators working overtime in ensuring that SAO doesn't become third year running winner.

But they all have relatively recent anime adapations that stuck fairly close to the source material.

What I meant was: It came 6th last year, then it had the anime and 2 more volumes, (or 3, depending when they stop the voting) therefore I wonder if the adaptation brought it to a bigger audience, which recognized it's value, putting it in a top spot this year.

Well, how much did the sale increased? It has to be at least around 100k to challenge SAO and the others through popularity.

Latest volume (7.5) sold over 92k copies before dropping out of Oricon's weekly rankings; before the anime, they would only sell 30k-40k copies.

Wow that's unexpected. I'm curious to see the voting repartition. Could it be that the voters finally got bored of having the same winners each time, or is there another cause?

I wonder how well 六花の勇者 is doing, though...
I'll be happy if it simply is still in the top 50. It seems to have gathered more fans lately so maybe it still managed to enter the top without the help of the voters from the industry.
Too bad media works bunko's title cannot enter the ranking. I'm curious to see how well would fare Biblia koshodou, and I would have liked to see Reinousha Minato in there.

BTW... It's been a while since something else than a title from dengeki bunko ranked first. And first time a gagaga bunko title ranks first.

I checked who ranked first historically

2005 : Suzumiya Haruhi Series (sneaker bunko)
2006 Zaregoto Series ( Koudansha Novels)
2007 Ookami to Koushinryou (Dengeki Bunko)
2008 Full Metal Panic (fujimi fantasia bunko)
2009 Bungaku Shoujo series (Famitsu Bunko)
2010 Baka to test to shoukanjuu (Famitsu Bunko)
2011 To aru majutsu no Index (dengeki bunko)
2012 Sword art online (dengeki bunko)
2013 Sword art online (dengeki bunko)

-> gagaga bunko never ranked first; it's been four year that another publisher than dengeki bunko managed to get the first place; and even before that it was famitsu two times in a row.

If even Asuna could not beat Mikoto during the dominance of SAO the previous year, I really doubt anyone can do so given the existence of the Rinse and Repeat Volume 3 for 10 years Railgun anime

I checked who ranked first historically

Well, let's see if MF J can make it to first. The closest it got was Haganai at second for 2011.

Nah, still need to beat Hideyoshi for that category. It was practically ranked 4th in the girls category the previous year (if we combined all the votes).

Biblia would take number 1 for sure if MW bunko title can enter the ranking :frustrated::heh: Well, joking aside, oregairu is a really unexpected no. 1 for me, but what I'm looking forward the most is what hidden treasure gonna enter the top 10 this time(last time was rokka no yuusha).

Zefyris
2013-11-14, 11:59
Note that the year before, it was circlet girl which was pushed by those voters. Wonder if some users here tried that book since then, as I didn't see anyone commenting about it like it happened for Rokka no Yuusha.
So maybe it's better to not expect that every year the title pushed in the top 10 by the voters from the LN industry will be as good as it was in the 2013 ranking...

BTW, the fact that koudansha box are allowed in the ranking but not media works bunko is beyond ridiculous.
How can you not call media works bunko light novel if you're going to call those highly overpriced boxes from Koudansha? I agree that what media works bunko does looks somewhere in the middle between light noves and novels, but it still pretty much looks like light novels. At least, compared to the koudansha boxes.
Buying a 1150 pages book like the Horizon 2 下 from dengeki bunko cost me less than it would cost me to buy a 300 pages volumes boxed with 7 times less color image and like 20 times less black and white illustration from koudansha box. What a revolting rip off.

Now if only someone would kick Mikoto off her high horse….preferably Index and preferably not Asuna.

Really, Motoharu definitely deserves to be in the rankings after NT7. We just don't know if it is him.

Congratulations to Kamiya Yuu Sensei

Not only NGNL jump from 16th to the 10th rank, Clockwork Planet his other work debut at 13th too.
And for NGNL this is even without any influence from the airing anime version.

I figured SAO would slip a little, but I'm surprised it fell so far and is getting beat by a couple lesser-known series.

I'm also surprised that Mahouka didn't make the top 10 with all the hype it gets.

Good question, especially since the anime is on track to being the best selling Fall show. Perhaps we need stop trying understand the buying habits of our island friends. Too much of a headache. :p

I just noticed both Ichika and Charlotte sneaking in last place for their respective gender polls :heh:

I'm also surprised that Mahouka didn't make the top 10 with all the hype it gets.

It's the same as Haganai I think- After one year of making it very close to the top, they just sort of dropped down with the following years.

The fact that Sena didn't rank is sad, I'm quite happy otherwise.

Great to see Oregairu take 1st, same thing goes for Hachiman. I'm also sort of happy to see Touma beat Kirito. :heh:

It's also wonderful to see Index in Top 5 again, plus Izayoi in Top 10, even Kuro Usagi managed to make the top 20. Kudos to Tokyo Ravens and Hataraku, they really deserved the attention. PLus, congrats to Rentarou.

EDIT: Sad that Campione didn't rank. :(

Kurumi <3

A secondary character that has been away from the spotlight a long time ago she still ranks above many of the character from her series .

Sena didn't have that much focuss on the last novel. It was Yozora the one who had all that fullfilling novel for her after being the outcast due to the author's own decisions.

Mikoto... meh...
Yukino... I have mixed feelings about her. Holding back her feelings about friendship and self pitying isn't good in my book. One wrong move and she could become another Yozora.
Asuna... lol.
Index caught me off guard... I guess this time she did better because...:

- Got screentime from the Index-tan's movie(and dat ass... ahem... I mean the photo shoot in between).
- NT8 had her with a little screen time compared the whole of NT series, seriously.

So, maybe if Index gets a larger role in the series she should do better the next time.

Magdala is 46 and Ul Fenesis 27. I guess we aren't going to see with this a successor of ookami to koushinryou as far as popularity goes.

How he heck did Horizon manage to lose 50 place in one year though??? O_o
It's still selling around 40k volumes in two weeks at each new volume so it's not like people have stopped buying it...

And looks like people still don't have enough year of voting for Misaka. what the heck 5 years in a row... :x

Some of you guys still don't understand that this is not a 'popularity' ranking. Why would hype or getting anime improve its ranking? The only reason why is because people read it because of anime and found it to be Sugoi (like Hatama for eg.). Sugoi does not necessarily mean it's popular or sells well. But this year's ranking does really look dubious to me. Have to wait till I see the scoring system. Out of here. Bye.

Tsurugi no Hime to Aldebaran?

nope... it's not aldebaran... it's Tenkyou no Alderamin (http://dengekibunko.dengeki.com/newreleases/978-4-04-886559-3/)

The characters are popularity based...the LN ranking, not so much.

Some take...
1. Oregairu taking 1st, already know that for a week. Sad Yukinon cannot dethroned Biribiri.
2. Male ranking...if I remember correctly I voted for Touma, Kyousuke, and Araragi. Nice to see Hachiman winning it, though.
3. Female ranking...Kirino > Ayase is absurd (Kuroneko at 18 doesn't surprise me at all, she all but disappear for the last few volumes), so is Yozora > Rika (We all know Rika is the main heroine in Haganai...who cares about Niku). Index found her way back after dropping out last year, Oregairu certainly went insane when even Komachi got on board (Why is Totsuka not on the female list :p) and Yuigahama getting 4th (Yukinon at 2nd doesn't surprise me other than the fact that why she's not 1st). Tsukiko sighting even when Henneko is not even on Top 60 novels, and this confirms that Kurumi is the best girl from DAL.
3b. If I remembered correctly my female vote went to Biribiri, Ayase, and Yukinon. Again, how in the world Ayase finish behind Kirino?
4. Oh well, congrats to Biribiri I guess for still not relinquishing the tiara.

Any news on the rankings of the authors and illustrators?

The only reason why is because people read it because of anime and found it to be Sugoi (like Hatama for eg.). Sugoi does not necessarily mean it's popular or sells well. But this year's ranking does really look dubious to me. Have to wait till I see the scoring system. Out of here. Bye.
The only result not completely popularity based is the LN ranking ImO, all other are popularity based. And the only reason it's not popularity based is because there isn't only fans voting in that one.

Agreed! This is the best piece of news so far. Still remaining on the top 60 means it's still going pretty strong.
That or the voters from the LN industry still voted massively this year for Rokka no Yuusha. Curious to see the detailed score here.

So anyway; compared to the last year top 20 :

-4 Sword Art Online
-1 Shinyaku To Aru Majutsu no Index
-5 Rokka no Yuusha (Hero of the Six Flowers)
-16 Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu
-4 Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai
+5 Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. (Oregairu/Hamachi)
-8 Durarara!!
-53(not in the ranking anymore) Shinonome Yuuko wa Tanshoku Shousetsu wo Aishiteiru (Shinonome Yuuko Series)
-52 (not in the ranking anymore) Sakurada Reset
-50 Genesis Series: Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon
-20 Accel World
-6 Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei
+11 Tenkyou no Alderamin (Mirror of Heaven Alderamin)
-42 Ben-to
-12 Kokoro Connect
+6 No Game No Life
-6 Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
-20 Kino no Tabi
-42(not in the ranking anymore) Hekiyou Gakuen Seitokai Gijiroku
-41(not in the ranking anymore) Nourin

All titles but 3 lost places; and several titles lost more than 40 places, with no less than 4 titles not in the ranking at all anymore. Biggest fall being the ranked 8,9,10 of last year. 8 and 9 aren't ever here anymore, and horizon almost felt out of the ranking as well, ending at the 60th place.

Found the illustrator ranking online...

1. Haimura Kiyotaka (Toaru Series)
2. Ponkan(8) (Oregairu)
3. abec (SAO)
4. Buriki (Haganai)
5. Kantoku (Henneko)
6. Tsunako (DAL)
7. Takeoka Miho (When Hikaru was on Earth)
8. Kanzaki Hiro (Oreimo)
9. Ukai Saki (Black Bullet)
10. Yazuda Suzuhito (DRRR)

Horizon's very steep (almost as steep as its backflip in Season 2 :heh:) fall from the rankings shows a lot about the content of the light novels. It's simply demanding of a higher level of research and understanding than most light novels, so the lack of an anime series to "abridge" the series into a less convoluted mess hit the light novel popularity ranks hard.

And usually even the LN ranking are at least partially popularity ranking imo.

Or rather I'm still surprised how popular the Horizon Anime was :heh: Like you've said the LN is a pretty hard read and it doesn't have the huge fanbase of the other titles, and the Anime isn't exactly the most 'accessible' show even among sci-fi series :heh:

And there are easier shows to watch for fanservice :heh:

Fair enough. That's why I replied so because otherwise I don't want to participate in this forum. :heh:

But it does remind me of the few times where people were trying to supplement information to aohige without knowing that he's native Japanese and already read the source material. I can totally understand how he feels when he goes 'Duh, don't tell me something I already know' :heh:

With regards to this 'partial popularity' thing, I don't want to debate this again. I thought it should be obvious it's about how the majority perceives the word 'popularity'.

With respect to the majority's perception of konorano (not talking about you), what irritates me to no end, is this has been said by some of us again and again. But never mind, forget it, I myself forget sometimes that there are always new people in any thread and topic of discussion. :heh:

I don't know who's aohige but I got what you meant, ok ok ^^".

Well, it's always difficult to dissociate popularity from quality in votes anyway. For one, they can only vote for titles that they read so a title which isn't selling a lot has far less chance to receive vote. There are other even more problematic reasons but let's change the subject x].

But at the very least, those rankings are wished by they creators to be as the tittle said, IE, not "what do you like", but "what title impressed you the most/is the most awesome", on this I completely agree.
And I wish that voters had more that in mind when voting,as the rankings would be even more interesting.
Well, the LN industry side is trying hard to balance out the popularity votes with more "appropriate" votes and that's why this ranking is more interesting than a simple popularity ranking for me.

Now waiting for the complete numbers, as without them it's difficult to see clearly in those rankings. I suppose we won't get them before the official release though.

We're talking about the "character" here "Misaka Mikoto", she became popular not just because of the light novel itself, admit or deny it she became popular because of her over exposure in several media. Both the LN, Manga, and the series itself.

And I think it's blasphemy thinking that Misaka Mikoto was voted and known just because of the light novel "itself".

Although it seems that Tokyo Raven didn't get a rise in fanbase as people thought, seeing as how it's the scores from the collab that brought it up.

Well, many reasons.
It could be that Kagepro fans don't really care about Konorano.
Could explain Mahouka's low HP numbers as well, since it doesn't match up, which makes some sense since I heard that Mahouka also have the support of the non-Otaku community (though I wonder how they could stand the brocon-siscon).
Another reason could be that 5 other works have grabbed the voters' attention more since they have only 5 votes each.

Also why do Index and Kagepro have 0 for collab?

Since each person has only 5 votes, it just means that all 61 collaborators prefer to give their votes to 5 other titles other than Index and Kagepro. And some of them might not even have read the books.

Well Collabs are there to balance out the votes with the public, so it stands to reason that like what you've suggested they might not think that they would need to vote for popular series... Which is true judging by the results.

But comparing the results from last year, they seem to be on overdrive by putting so many 100+ points series in the top ten. Last year it was only Rokka, this year more than half the titles were put there by them.

5. Oreimo
6. Haganai

Surprised that Retto-sei is not going anywhere even if it's popularity alone. On the other hand, though, you have 8 and 10 being up there only b/c of anime...

But as usual, the "popularity" alone list consist of series that are fairly well known (and got an anime series), throw in collaborator vote and you have a bunch of series that no one heard of (Not saying they're bad...) in Top 10...

On the other hand, though, Oregairu (Hamachi) scores well again in both HP voting (General Public) and among collaborators. The #1 is well deserved.

More like, why would they vote for popular titles since regular voters are already massively voting for them?

Outside of the fact that most popular titles don't deserve to rank in the top 10 of a poll aiming to designate "sugoi" titles ImO, if the voters from the industry wants to counterbalance the popularity vote, they NEED to avoid voting for the most popularity titles. Especially when those titles have been in the top 5 for years... On top of the risk of transforming those rankings in a simple popularity poll, there's the risk of making it boring by having always the sames titles on top years after years.

The sample sizes are pretty similar to last year's with slight increases, particularly Collabs which have 11 more people (IIRC).
Well it's just that getting that score last year meant being 3rd while getting it this year means being 8th, so I though the total aount of casted vote had to be higher. But it may be that the votes were most concentrated on a few titles than last year...

Chaos2Frozen

Partly the reason is because the action sequences has been getting overly complex as compared to previous volumes (look at NT 7 for example) <--It counts, okay:heh:
>AW will barely make it into top 10 this year.
>-Gatari will still not get enough love.
>Kino has, and will be like Gengar and Starmie, always in the OU top 20.
>Top 10: SAO, Mahouka, Index, Oreimo, Oregairu, Rokka:heh:, Horizon, Accel World, Aldermann, NGNL

Now, let's see how many of my guesses are correct.

This one will get very long, so please bear with it.

Complete "translated" list for those who can't read Japanese:

1. Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. (Oregairu/Hamachi/SNAFU) <--Haven't seen the anime to comment much, and it certainly is a surprise pick for 1, but I really do like volumes 6.5 and 7.5, at least.
2. Alderamin in the Sky <-- Good read, but I'm not sure it deserves that much help from the collab side. I thought the HP would be higher, however.
3. Index <--Forsaken by the collabs, as they did for DRRR (and Index didn't do well for this last year.). Did the Misa-chans combo help to keep it high this year?
4. Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darou ka (DanMachi) <--Never expected this one in the top 10. Thought it would be top 20 at least, but not this high. Certainly a refreshingly different type of read from most of the LNs I have access to.
5. SAO <--Well, any comment on this one will add fuel to the fire. Being forsaken by the RNG doesn't help either.
6. Hataraku Maou-sama <-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJMD3eO7tpESums up my feelings.
7. Tokyo Ravens <-- And thanks to this, I had emails asking me to do the LNs instead of the manga I'm working on now...
8. Rokka no Yuusha <-- I'm pretty impressed that the collabs continue to support this one. In fact, the collabs seem to have more input in this year's poll as compared to the previous year.
9. Oreimo <--I dunno, did the ending hurt it or something?
10. No Game No Life <--Probably a take that at China's approach to this series.
11. Dokusou Tanpen Series - Nozaki Madou Gekijou
12. Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata <-- I shall sum my feelings of this up by saying that it's a quirky read, at the least.
13. Clockwork Planet <-- Rising a little too early for my liking, but I can't argue with the results.
14. Vampire Summer Time
15. Durarara! <-- It'll still be around next year.
16. Haken no Kouki Altina <--CZ, give me a review on this, please.
17. Escape Speed <-- Only read a chapter of this, and it certainly is a promising read.
18. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei <--Well, that was a drastic drop. HP and Collab were far from what I imagined.
19. When Hikaru was on Earth... <-- This one is getting too haremish that it's going to end with a Nice Boat soon.
20. Baka Test <-- After all the promises of it supposedly ending at volume 11, I think the backlash doomed it.

21. To aru Hikuushi no Seiyaku <-- Hopefully, with the upcoming anime, this will attain a higher ranking, because it's about as touching as its spiritual prequel.
22. Mondaiji-tachi <--Stagnated, huh
23. Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai <-- Pitchforks and nailed bats must have battered it here.
24. Knights & Magic
25. Amaryllis in the Ice Country <--Like Ame no Iris (same author), I do like this short read. I personally prefer Iris though.
26. No-Rin <-- The Gintama of LNs:heh:
27. Kokoro Connect <-- Farewell
28. Strange Moon
29. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo <--Anime served its part, but I hope 10.5 will tie up the series for real. It feels a little dragged out.
30. Dress na Boku ga Yangotonaki Katagata no Kateikyoushi-sama na Kudan <--ROFLROFLROFLROFLROFLROFLROFLROFLROFL
31. Accel World <--What happened to this one...
32. Record of Grancrest War
33. Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu.
34. Dai Nihon Samurai Girl
35. Ashita Boku wa Shinu. Kimi wa Ikikaeru <--Award winner in the Dengeki novel prize. I thought it'll be higher, but there are certainly better series than this.
36. Ro-Kyu-Bu! <--Wait for the next series by the same author (another loli series)
37. Date A Live <-- Well...
38. Kino no Tabi <-- Always finds a way to stay in this ranking, and I do like how it remains an endless journey (until the author decides to kill the series or something)
39. 420 Renpai Girl
40. Death Need Round
41. Kagerou Days <-- I think, CE, Lare and I will agree that we expect the HP to be much higher. Check the sales number, at least
42. Asachi to Shimamura <-- There's your two girl romance story...how it made it here, I have no idea. I thought Tokage no Ou was better.
43. Seitokai no Ichizon <-- And it will be gone
44. Hidan no Aria <How it is still here I have no idea
45. Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!? <--Very.........peculiar read
46. Magdala de Nemure <-- Why...
47. Boku to Kanojo no Game Sensou <-- Did the Reimu cosplay on volume 5's cover help make it here?:heh:
48. Ore ga Ikiru Raison d'Etre
49. Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de
50. High School DxD
51. Beatless
52. RAIL WARS
53. Hitotsu no Tairiku
54. Zashiki Warashi of Intelligence <--Now hoping that HO gets an anime, at least.
55. Sunday Without God <--I don't like how the story trailed off starting from volume 5, but it makes it here at least.
56. Ben-To <--Same as Sunday
57. Hai to Gensou no Grimgal
58. Chousou - Mada Ningen Ja Nai
59. NouKome <-- Oh bother...
60. Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon <-- On the brink of being eliminated, I guess.

Note to self: No Black Bullet, no -Gatari, no Baccano, no Tokage no Ou, no Golden Time

My biggest surprise this time was finding Clockwork Planet (only one volume out) in 13th. Anyway, I'm really happy to see Kamiya Yuu (NGNL in 10th) getting a lot of attention lately.

1. Misaka Mikoto (Index) <--I'm torn about her being here for 5 straight years. We need a rule to retire winners who have won the award 5 times or something...
2. Yukinoshita Yukino (Oregairu) <-- The anime's boost is not enough to push Mikoto over? I had her as the front runner to overthrow (though that's a 20% chance...)
3. Asuna (SAO)
4. Yuigahama Yui (Oregairu)
5. Index (Index) <-- What exactly did Index do exactly this year except for the 'fights' in volume 8?
6. Kousaka Kirino (Oreimo) <--Can't comment on characters from this series
7. Aragaki Ayase (Oreimo)
8. Shinon (SAO) <--And she hardly had any role during the volumes this year. I thought Alice would be higher.
9. Shiba Miyuki (Mahouka) <--Can't comment on this one either.
10. Yozora (Haganai) <-- Over Sena? Wut?
11. Himeko (Kokoro Connect) <--Farewell. This will be the last we'll see of you.
12. Rika (Haganai) <--More bro-like than any of the girls above her...
13. Shikibu Honoka (Hikaru) <-- When a Tsundere loves a Tsundere.../Shokuhou Misaki (Index) <-- Is this the Misa-chans effect at work or something? /Kino (Kino no Tabi) <--Hang in there
16. Emi(Maou-sama) <--Over Chiho? I thought the latter would be more popular/Kuroyukihime (AW) <--How she has fallen.
18. Kuroneko (Oreimo)
19. Tsuchimikado Natsume (Tokyo Ravens) <-- Don't like how her role is more diminished as of recent volumes, but it can't be helped given her status.
20. Hikigaya Komachi (Oregairu)/Watashi (Jinrui)/Kuro Usagi (Mondaiji)
23. Tsukiko (Henneko) <--An anime's supposed to boost your ranking, not drop you:twitch:
24. Tokisaki Kurumi (Date a Live)
25. Seira (Dress(ry)) <--I wonder how fans will react when they realize this girl's a 9-year-old silver haired loli genius princess of an imperial country and is the lead heroine in this story...
26. Senjougahara Hitagi (Monogatari Series)
27. Shiina Mashiro (Sakurasou)/Ul? (Magdala) <--How appropriate that two girls with similar personalities are here...
29. Adachi (Adachi to Shimamura)/Charlotte (IS) <--Oh Charl, it's a miracle you made it here when the rest of your series is nowhere in sight...except for Ichika, for some reason.

1. 8man (Oregairu)
2. Touma (Index) <--8man and Touman, new crimefighting duo.
3. Kirito (SAO) <--Thought he would be top 2.
4. Accelerator (Index) <-- The top 4 has the same names, just a shuffling of order.
5. Maou (Maou-sama) <-- Be proud, for you shall represent all the Sadaos in Japan.
6. Kyousuke (Oreimo) <-- The last we shall see you.
7. Sakamaki Izayoi (Mondaiji)
8. Shiba Tatsuya (Mahouka)
9. Sugisaki Ken (Seizon)
10. Akagi Koremitsu (Hikaru) <--The bro of all blockheads.
11. Araragi Koyomi (Monogatari)
12. Ikuta (Alderamin) <--Now make a push for top 10 next year. I see two guys out from next year's poll at least.
13. Totsuka Saika (Oregairu) <--Finally someone beats Hideyoshi in the trap department. Then again, traps confuse genders, Hideyoshi redefines gender/Satou You (Bento)
15. Kodaka (Haganai) <--After the fallout from the anime, I thought he'll be lower
16. Rentarou (Black Bullet)
17. Aoi Toori (Horizon)/Hideyoshi (Bakatest) <--Should take it out from this poll, because it certainly doesn't belong in either gender.
19. Kinji (Hidan no Aria)
20. Shidou (Date a Live)
21. Izaya (Drrr) <---And that'll be the last we'll see of him.
22. Kanda (Sakurasou) <--Same here.
23. Sora (NGNL)
24. Harutora (Tokyo Ravens) <--하루하루 무뎌져가네/Issei (DxD)
26. Tooru (Chaika)/Bell (Danmachi)
28. Yokodera (Henneko)/ Shizuo (Drrr)
30. Tsuchimikado (Index) <--Over Hamazura:heh:/Ichika (IS)<--Charl and Ichika ranked 30...I'm surprised no one started the love bridge yet.

Likewise what happened to Kirito and his 'untouchable' popularity from before :eyespin: ?

A bit late to the party but...

Congrats to Oregairu for taking first place; it was well deserved.

Quite happy that Index performed rather well this year. It is certainly the most stable series in terms of popularity in the top 10 in recent years. It didnt even get any collab votes and it still got third; quite an achievement.

Other things of note:

The variety in the top 10 LNs (Its refreshing seeing the collab votes mix up the order a bit. Congrats to Alderamin, Danmachi and Rokka no Yuusha)

Index beat SAO (Yes!)
SAO dropped 4 places (lol)

Kamijou placed 2nd in males and 3rd overall (Quite okay with that. While Mikoto holds a monopoly over first place in the females category, Kamijou's popularity shouldnt be underestimated either. He easily holds monopoly over second place; with first place going to the main protagonist of #1 LN that year. He just faces more fierce competition.)

Kamijou beat Kirito (Yes!)
Hachiman beat Kamijou (I'm actually okay with is. Congrats to Hachiman)
Accelerator came 4th (Not much left to say on this)

Mikoto came first (.......Not surprising given the anime, manga and LNs using her character well this year. Though this is the first time I have seen the actual numbers. I am shocked she tripled the votes of 2nd place. After 5 years in a row I am actually looking forward to the female character that will dethrone her. Not that I hate her anything but that win margin is ridiculous. It would be funny if Misaki did though.)

Index came 5th (Biggest Surprise. She only had 1 major appearance in the LNs this year. This has to be the movie's doing. Or at the very least the Index-tan photo spreads.)

Haimura gets best illustrator for the second time (I thought Ponkan8 wwas sure to get it. What a surprise. Though I dont know if this is deserved. Ever since NT started, I haven't been as wowed by his illustrations; save Thor and Othinus. I remember some rather amazing illustrations he did early on in Index. I would love to see him go all out in NT9.)

Last but not least: I'm ecstatic that Index was voted best LN series of the last 10 years. But that almost seems like a controversial choice. I'm happy becuase its my favourite LN series. Which begs the question:

How did they decide the rankings for the Best of 10 years list? Was it similar to either the best LNs list or the character popularity and best illustrator lists? Who was the one who decided on this list? What method used to determine them?

Index (series) have some very strong staying power, whether or not it's number one I don't want to get into it but--

best of 10 years
*1. Toaru majutsu no index
*2. Bungaku shoujo
*3. Baka to test to shoukanjuu
*4. Kino no tabi: The beautiful world
*5. Sword art online
*6. Suzumiya haruhi no yuuutsu
*7. Ben-to
*8. Shakugan no shana
*9. Full metal panic!
10. Ookami to koushinryou

I can say that out of all these, the only one that I'm surprised at was Ben-to. I never really got the impression that it grew that big.

I thought Toradora would be on it for sure.... Or Monogatari.... Or Baccano, seeing as how people never stop asking for them.

P.S - Also, Index (Character) was in [Road to Endymion]

I believe they used the series rankings of the past 10 years and aggregated them in some way.

Well that explains a lot. Of course Index would come out on top then with its consistent poularity and Ranking in the top 15 for the past 8 years, top 10 for the last 6, and top 3 for the last 4.

But it cant have been that simple. The order still looks a bit wonky considering aggregates or averages.

Misaka Mikoto's popularity is ridiculous.

My impression of the rankings. Not a critic, more like me rambling pointlessly, so yeah:

Looking at some of StB's sale records it seems like it was always a good seller, (25k-28k average) so I guess this shouldn't be a surprise. anime seems to have given it a decent boost too.

I guess Oregairu deserved it. Even though I haven't read it, I saw that Volume 9 was received unanimously well by the fanbase and had excellent sales to boot.

Though I'm surprised NGNL lost out. I thought it was a sure win for it given the huge sales driver the anime was.

Series I'm personally looking out for:
All Kamachi Series: Toaru Majutsu no Index (first and foremost)
DanMachi
Kamiya Yuu series: NGNL & Clockwork Planet
Mahouka (just to see if it benefited from an anime; zero interest otherwise)

A shame that Rokka no Yuusha won't be there this year but at least Volume 5 has been listed. Next year for sure.

Characters I'm personally looking out for:
Kamijou Touma: He's probably going to lose out to HachiMAN again but this year was basically owned by TouMAN in terms of character development and character awesomeness.
Othinus: NT10 ending withstanding, she's definitely left her mark.
Shokuhou Misaki: Its a shame that NT11 isn't counted but here's hoping she breaks into the Top 10 with Othinus.
Misaka Mikoto: Is there anyone who can dethrone her? (Preferably not Asuna...maybe Sinon).
Accelerator: Small but awesome moment that showed definite character development.
Thor: For the lulz.

Artists:
Ponkan8: He has a second chance to take the top spot after Haimura snatched it from him last year.
Haimura Kiyotaka: He basically drew one of his best illustrations (if not the best) to date. He'll be a tough contender this year as well.

It states on the cover Ponkan8 took first place. Well deserved.

Also, Yukinoshita Yukino is the best contender to dethroning Mikoto. Those other girls, not so much.

I won't spoil you, but the development Hachiman received in volume 9 far surpasses whatever Touma went through in the Othinus volume. It really doesn't compare. Personally expecting Oregairu to sweep almost every bracket. And yes, there's some bias here on my part.

I disagree. Both Kamijou and Hachiman went through roughly the same revelation. It's just Oregairu's writing style allows to convey it with more emotions; it's more intimate than Index could ever hope to be with its composition.

...Ah, I'll be very, very disappointed in Japan (again) if Misaka/SAO's haremettes'd won girls' top. And pretty surprised if Othinus places in top-3.

Ah. You're right about Ponkan8. I didn't realize there was a link to a bigger picture there.

Well it would be a great change of pace if Mikoto got dethroned. But remember that last year she received triple the votes of 2nd place. And its not like Mikoto did anything that would affect her negatively this year. We can only hope that the strength of Oregairu V9 plus the arrival of Othinus and Misaki shake things up a bit.

I just hope Toaru Majutsu no Index holds steady (or slight drops) in the rankings across all of the categories; the past year was one of the best in the franchise. I'll be pissed if SAO comes out on top of it or if Kamijou doesn't place second to HachiMAN.

I'm just unsure of how SAO, Mahouka and NGNL will place this time round due to anime adaptations influencing things.

Take the numbers from polls, apply them to the formula. Take collaborators' votes, apply them to the different formula. Take the monitors' votes - third formula. Sum this up, you've got the results. Basically, even the most popular title can lose to the most obscure LN which got collaborators' support. The formulae each time are different.

The problem for Mikoto is she did practically nothing noteworthy this year where as Othinus and Misaki have both received significant character development and as a result are well received within the fanbase. If Mikoto loses it would be because a lot of people that would've voted for her voted for Othinus/Misaki instead.

Anyways my bets for top 5 series are:

Hmm... If Hachiman got more development in Volume 9 than Touma in NT 9 + NT 10 + NT 11, then I would like to see that... because I frankly think that such a thing is ridiculous in concept and is likely totally impossible... I read Oregairu... and while it is amusing and interesting, personally I find that in terms of the development that happens in both series, Oregairu... is... a joke... (just my opinion). Even if Oregairu is much better than many other series, comparing NT 9 to any other written volume of any other work just seems retarded to me. NT 9 is my favorite book ever written, so if you just diss out without actually reading it, then you have no clue what you are talking about. I find it hard to believe that Oregairu Volume 9 is good enough to hold a candle to NT 9-11... but whatever... it just depends on taste and the size of the relevant readership. Both are good at what their readers want, so it really isn't a fair objective comparison.

Anyway, if I ever see more development for a character than for Touma in NT 9, that character would become my favorite character of all time, and I have to say that such a thing is extremely unlikely to happen.

Back on topic, I want to see Misaki, Othinus, Sinon(?), and maybe some other characters end up doing really well...

For Guys, Hachiman, Touma, Bell, Accelerator, Kihara Noukan, and a few others that just aren't coming to mind right now...

I read Oregairu...

I find that hard to believe, but okay. And it's not just volume 9. Volumes 6, mostly 7-8 lead up to the development in volume 9 (and 6.5 if you want to include the bonus track). Well, actually you could argue all the volumes led up to volume 9. Needless to say, character development in Oregairu (which actually is equally balanced between the three main characters) is a lot more well-rounded than it is in Index, either because it tends to shift around to other perspectives too much or do something else. It's just not as compelling.

If you compare the Hachiman of volume 9 to the Hachiman of volume 1, he's like a different person. Same could be said for Yukino.

Touma? Not so much, except for his ever expanding harem and some things he learned here and there after saving a few damsels in distress. He's still fundamentally the same character.

Frankly, I find it ridiculous comparing a series like Index to a coming-of-age story like Oregairu. Oregairu is more focused on what it's trying to do, which is why I think it makes for a better read as far as characters going from point A to point B.

But don't get me wrong, my personal bets are Touma and Hachiman being the top 2 just based on what happened in the novels this year. Can't really say much for the other male characters out there though.

This obvious as Index series keeps on adding new characters which makes the author to take long before developing characters he already had(if they're lucky enough to not being forgotten coyghAisacough).

I think Oda does a better job developing his main crew than Kamachi even with the large amount of characters.

Its not about cutting infodumps. Its about choosing which infodumps are important to know and which should be cut. If the team was more invested, it would have been quite different. Not to mention, the visuals itself were very subpar

The two aren't even comparable in terms of genre, style, anything besides the fact that both are literature. You'll never get any objective answer since it's just a matter of taste.

Also btw Kirito has a chance of upsetting Touma and Hachiman. Second part of the anime + that PSP Vita game should help his cause.

It never will happen though since Mahouka's gaining popularity if anything.

BTW for fun sake my "shocking" predictions for this year's voting would be:

->35th anti magic platoon making top 30
->Black Bullet placing top 20 (which would be a miracle considering how bad the anime is)
->Seiken Tsukai World Break, Shinmai Maou No Testament (Ew), and Magika all placing top 60 (I'm mostly confident on this one)
->Madan making top 10
->Clockwork Planet placing 7th (Log Horizon is 6th)
->Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu making top 15
->Kuro no Hiera Glaphicos is the one LN this year that ranks really high (like top 20) but nobody here knows wtf it is.
->Rentaro Satomi making top 10 male character
->Izayoi is the forth most popular male character and Sora is the 5th (Touma, Kirito and Hachiman are locks for 1st, 2nd and 3rd after that it's a toss up between Sora, Tatsuya, Shiroe and Izayoi)
->Accelerator drops out of the top 10 ;(
->Ellen making top 10 female character (again long shot)
->Othinus making top 10 female character
->Jibril making top 25
->Sinon makes top 5
->Index doesn't make the top female list

best comment of the topic, NT 9 is very overrated, until there was an interesting idea about the volume, but lacked courage for the author to really change something, NT 10 made it even clearer. lacked boldness

Sure, you could say that they are important but its obvious if you read the novel that some infodumps are more important than other infodumps. When the show sacrifices important dumps for less important dumps, the whole plot wouldn't make any sense ( and it didn't in the anime). Not to mention they skipped a ton of character building moments, monologues, and even skimped on the setting. I could go on and on about the bad things the anime decided to do.

My predictions for top 4
Oregairu
SAO
Index
NGNL

For male characters
Hachiman
Araragi
Kirito
Touma
Accelerator
Tatsuya
Sora
Izayoi

Female
Misaka
Asuna
Yukino
Yuigahama
Othinus
Miyuki
Shiroe.

I hope mahouka does well though. Vol 14 was well received.

character ranking has never been about who's the best but about who's popular anyway. So discussing who between Hikigaya and Kamijou has the most development is kind of useless in that case. (Especially since it's quite obvious that the answer isn't Touma, too xD ). If the character ranking was about development of a character, most of the top 10 each year wouldn't even enter the ranking; obviously... And Fenesis from Magdala would rank first this year on the female side of the ranking, or almost, as it's going to be dificult to see more drastic evolution on the girl side this year than what she had. Though she'll probably not even make the cut of the top 30. Popularity poll are always merciless for less known series like this.

Probably because Index was published and released in 2004 and it's still ongoing and has been highly popular for a long time. It would be like asking why other mangas these days can't compete against one piece.

I think that comparison only makes sense when talking about actual sales. Index is NOT the One Piece of light novels or anything similar.

Misaka's lasting and increasing (according to last year) popularity is an oddity among all LN characters that can't just be relegated to her coming before other characters. The gap is too unnatural.

It never really gotten that popular until around 2010, and series like SAO and others have gotten very strong now. But I was referring to the popularity of their heroines.

I can only assume that the fanbase of the other heroines just don't know or don't care about this poll ranking, at least not when they're beasting over Newtype.

I think that's because of the next reasons:

1- Tsundere characters have a sort of automatic fandom. Maybe for the simple archetype the character is.
2- Ship material. It doesn't matter if the love interest isn't interested on them. As usual, the main guy's feelings are ignored, twisted or outright denied. Any love rival will be hated(like Yoshida from Shakugan no Shana; I always thought the hate she got was irrational)
3- Strong or "independent" character (not always as most of them heavily rely on the mc or just can't think of something else like the supposedly strong willed Taiga)
4- Reluctance from fans to accept other characters because usually they're love rivals which relates to 2.

That reminds me a lot of people who labeled Sakura as tsundere for Naruto, still don't know how domestic abuse tsukkomi makes a tsundere.

Chaos2Frozen
2014-11-13, 11:28
I'm not questioning why Tsunderes are popular, I know why as I'm a fan of most of them.

Plus it doesn't explain why that would deter other fanbases from other series.
