Pick- Kurumi, Suigintou, Chihiro, Silica
Predict- Jibril, Gin-sama, Momoko, Funabori

Apparently, I noticed in the voting thread that someone posted a ballet voting for <<神野ひかり@魔界天使ジブリ-ル>>, which, I suppose, is a joke label for Jibril. Is it actually possible to vote for Jibril using that label (which is normally <<ジブリール@ノーゲーム・ノーライフ>>)? I'm aware that short labels can be used (e.g. <<スズ>> to vote for Suzu), but that?

Anyway, if voting, you should be using the proper label to make sure your vote for that character counts.

I think it might be possible because I remember someone putting Takatsuki Yayoi on Kise Yayoi's vote in Saimoe 2012 and it seemed like it got counted in.

Matches: I1-2 J1-2 K1-2 L1-2

Kakura Kurumi should win the first match. She has decent strength while her opponent are among the weakest in the tournament. Index was in the same preliminary group as Hiroe and didn't do very well but I wouldn't count her out. Atago Hiroe should be a tough opponent to beat, though. I think a bit too tough so I have Hiroe winning but it'll be closer than their preliminary match was. Tina Sprout steps up to challenge one of the big five Puella Magi. Madoka only looked okay while Sayaka destroyed her opponent. While I think Tina is pretty strong, she'll have to advance through Repechage. I have Kyouko winning. Yuu wins the fourth match fairly easily due to being pretty strong and having no opposition.

Minami Chiaki
Atago Hiroe
Sakura Kyouko
Sonoda Yuu

- While Roka was unable to stand up to a Love Live Rep, the other D-Frag reps are taking care of business. Funabori wins her match with room to spare against SIlica of SAO.
- No Game no Life with a quick start. Jibril wins against Kurumi
- A split for Rozen Maiden..... not a problem for Suigintou

I1-2: Picking: Chiaki (Minami-ke)

J1-2: Picking: Tensai Ikkyuu (Nanana)
* Tensai looks strong but having Index and a Saki rep in the same match could be a problem

K1-2: Tina Sprout (B Bullet), Sakura Kyouko (PMMM), Ayumi (Kaminomi)
* All 3 mini favorites. I would say Tina Sprout in any other match, but not against a PMMM

L1-2: Picking: Yuu Sonada (Sakura Trick)

Well, my "gamble" on Funabori pays off...4/4 in prediction.

On the other hand...poor Suzu no Head...

Jibril and Kurumi are fairly close as expected, Suigintou takes care of business, and I still can't see the last winner anywhere.

For today:
I1-2: Pick/Predict: Kurumi. Again, won by default just b/c she's from Saki...
J1-2: Pick: Index, Predict: Hiroe. Hiroe is actually one of the stronger Zenkoku-hen newcomer, and Index, well, she's going to end Railgun's winning streak.
K1-2: Pick/Predict: Kyouko. Tina is moe but she's just not an opponent for Kyouko...
L1-2: Pick: Bekki, Predict: Yuu. Of course, a troll win by the ババァ would be fun...

Jibril won, yes!

my Picks:

I1-2 Minami Chiaki (Minami-ke)
J1-2 Index
K1-2 Tina Sprout

For this round my favorite is Chiaki, but with a Saki there I don't think she will have a chance.

Chitoge should win the first match. Mafuyu was pretty strong back in the day but those days have passed. Ai is strong enough to qualify each year but rare draws opponents weak enough to beat in Round 1. Hisa takes the second match. Her opponents just aren't that strong and Hisa is. For the same reason, Kaori wins the third match. Fourth match features weaker characters making it tough to call. Kinmosa is the stronger series but Youko is among the weaker members of the main cast. I think she might win anyways.

After two days of below average participation, today we reached the highest turnout so far this year. Besides the participation of a Madoka character, which usually draws a large crowd, another reason for this turnout seems to be the somewhat unexpected race between Hiroe and Index in J1-2 which was decided by a single vote.

Even more notable, the vote percentage achieved by Sakura Kyouko (71.43%) is the 2nd highest of all time for a 3-sided match. It is only surpassed by the 73.40% achieved by Fate T. Hallaoun in Round 1 of the 2007 tournament.

hinakatbklyn

- Sakura Kyouko passes 300, more than doubles the combined votes of 2nd and 3rd place..... and her win mostly gets overshadowed by the power struggle between Index/Railgun and Saki to determine if either one is strong enough to challenge the PMMMs for AST 2014.

- I had a feeling that Index was in trouble even though she was temporarily in the lead because the votes appeared too high for AST 2014 stats. Index didn't win, but to not be the main character in the Railgun timeline and still lose by 1 vote, I get the impression the other reps (Including the leader Mikoto) may be just as strong. (Lost in the power struggle was Tensai being last)

- Best result of the day though was Yuu Sonada winning.

Repechage round is going to be like the one from last year, isn't it?

No, it's totally different from last year.

There are 3 rounds and each one will take place immediately after the end of each round of main phase. Each round is just one big match with many characters like in a group of 1st prelims. Voters can choose up to 4 characters. In the first round there will be all characters who finish 2nd in Round 1 of the main phase. The top 24 will proceed to the second round together with the losers of Round 2 of the main phase. There the top 16 will proceed to the third round together with the losers of Round 3 of the main phase. Finally the top 8 will qualify for the playoffs and rejoin the group winners of the main phase.

In my opinion, Round 3 of Repechage will be very competitive this year. The top 8 who come back will be stronger than several of the group winners.

My preferences: Haibara (Conan), Hisa (Saki), Kaori (Isshuukan Friends), Youko (Kinmosa)
Today, I really really like the four of them and I would like to see them all win, although for Haibara is nearly impossible to win against Chitoge.

Voting for Mafuyu and Yokoi. I enjoyed Seitokai no Ichizon while it lasted (unfortunately, it seems to have ended, with the subpar second season and all). Oh, and thank timbits for getting me into this show, although he longer posts here. He posted in AnimeSuki AST threads the last three years, remember?

As for Tonari no Seki-kun, it is a nice short comedy. I wish though that the anime (and manga) didn't use shogi so much. Yokoi and Seki make a great pair.

Unfortunately, both Mafuyu and Yokoi are losing badly right now. :( Which is not really surprising.

My votes:
<<椎名真冬@生徒会の一存 Lv.2 渡す生徒会>> (SHIINA Mafuyu @ Seitokai no Ichizon)
<<横井るみ@となりの関くん>> (YOKOI Rumi @ Tonari no Seki-kun)

By the way, whoever voted using "<<神野ひかり@魔界天使ジブリ-ル>>" had his vote count for Jibril. I'm not sure how the official vote-counting tracker works, but this behavior is a bit puzzling (isn't it needlessly complicating?). As it seems, anyone can put an alias, such as ジブリ-ル, anywhere within angle brackets along with any other stuff, and have the vote count. Not that I am recommending this course of action to anyone.

Kurumi won as thought she would. Hiroe vs Index turned out to be a lot closer than their preliminary match was. While I did expect Index to do better and winning wasn't completely out of the question, I didn't really think it would come down to such a small margin. Hiroe does win in the end, though. Sakura Kyouko destroys Tina Sprout. I didn't have Tina winning but I expected her to do a lot better. Maybe the Puella Magi can't be beaten this year either? Yuu's match is fairly normal. Yuu has no problems winning.

First tie of the main phase in L1-3. Both Youko and Yukina advance to Round 2. There is nobody in 2nd place so no chara is going to repechage.

Also, from Round 2 onwards "all losers" go to repechage, so Youko and Yukina already have a guaranteed place there if they happen to lose in the next round.

Chitoge, Hisa and Kaori all won as I predicted. None of them had much trouble as they just didn't draw opponents strong enough to challenge them. I wasn't too sure who would win the fourth match and in the end the fourth match ended up with one of those rare ties. I don't think either has much of a chance in round 2, though.

Matches: I1-4 J1-4 K1-4 L1-4

Chiya should win the first match and the combo with Chino helps here even more. I'm not really convinced the Saki characters from E4 are as strong as they look. Ringo did pretty well in her preliminary group so I'll side with her even though Sukoya might beat her. Chino vs Suguha is a tough match and is more like a Round 2 match than a Round 1 match. I have Chino edging out Suguha but it could go either way. Homura wins her match. This is her year. Maybe.

Traveling yesterday, so not even time to post my standard pick/prediction...

Way back 2 days ago and I'm 4/4 in prediction, although Hiroe and Index was much closer than I thought.

Yesterday would have been like...
I1-3: Pick: Haibara, Predict: Chitoge
J1-3: Pick/Predict: Hisa, just b/c I've no clue who the other two are.
K1-3: Pick/Predict: Kaori
L1-3: Pick/Predict: Yukina. I'm just not a fan of Youko myself.

Of course, it's a 4/4 prediction...

For today:
I1-4: Pick/Predict: Chiya. Well, picking Chiya over Karen basically.
J1-4: Pick: Ringo, Predict: Kokaji-pro. Kokaji win just b/c she's from Saki...
K1-4: Pick/Predict: Chino. Should not be even a match.
L1-4: Pick: Hina, Predict: Homuhomu. No, it'll never be Hina's year.

Let's see what I missed.....

Previous results:
Chitoge won = Very good
Yukina tied her match = Good.

Current results:
-Preferred both Chiya/Karen and Chino/Suguha. Usagi combo of Chiya and Chino won so good results
-Ringo won = OK I guess. Doesn't look like Kate can conquer AST, but she at least conquered a Saki rep for 2nd.
-Homura > Hinagiku..... better I missed that match.

One day early on my next group of picks:
- M1-1: Pick preference: Tomoka (Ro-Kyu-Bu) = Kuro Matsumi (Saki)
- N1-1: No real preference
- O1-1: Picking: Haruka Amami (Im@s)
- P1-1: Picking: Gokou Ruri (Kuroneko)

M-1 & P1 both have Saki and Seiyuu combos. Kuro Matsumi might have the advantage against Tomoka because she has both. Pressure is mostly on Tomoka. She may be a group winner, but the other Ro-Kyu-Bu reps that had matches so far, they didn't win their matches and missed repchange as well. Tomoka also has to worry about another challenger with a current series (Illyasviel).

Subayai
2014-08-31, 11:27
Among the characters qualified for next round so far, 19 are from Y groups (newcomer) and 30 from E groups (veteran).

By series (12 newcomer series and 11 veteran series)
Saki: 12 characters
Madoka, Railgun, GochiUsa, Kinmosa: 4
Love Live, Monogatari, D-Frag!: 2
Rozen Maiden, Minami-ke, Oregairu, Higurashi, Sora no Otoshimono, Chuu2Koi!, Sakura Trick, Brynhildr, Isshuukan Friends, Nourin, Kyoukai no Kanata, Non Non Biyori, Nisekoi, No Game No Life, Strike the Blood: 1

So it seems the newcomers are doing well but of course there haven't been any big newcomer vs veteran clashes yet. Actually, for the moment Leafa is the veteran defeated by a newcomer who placed higher in 1st prelims and she was just 4th in E8.

From the upcoming matches, maybe Ren-chon (NNB) vs Kotori (LL!) in R1-4 is the first big test for the newcomers.
EDIT: before that, there is also Karen Kujou vs Shinku in R1-2! Of course I'll be rooting for Shinku in that case.

hinakatbklyn
2014-08-31, 11:42
A big test for newcomers vs. veterans..... if combo voting was factored in, then Kosaki Onodera would have a huge test ahead of her in 3 match days.

While Onodera has Souseiseki (Rozen Maiden) and Kei Arakawa (Saki) (M1-3), she has to contend with three other Saki reps in two separate same day matches including "Subara" Kirame (N1-3) and Ako Atarashi (O1-3).

As for rookies & veterans, the rookies did much better this week like previously stated with 13 more qualifying, but still trail the vets by 11. all the veterans qualifying this week except for 1 were not from the 2nd chance qualifiers, making that total 3. while only 1 rookie is from the 2nd chancers. As for eliminations, the rookies lost a couple more than the vets did with their 26 to 23. while the veterans have 5 more gals in the step 1 battle royal than the rookies do. with 240 gals left, the veterans still have a 28 gal lead.

Chiya does end up winning and the match isn't as close as I thought it would be. Ringo does about as well as I thought she would. Chino ends up stomping Suguha. I really though Suguha was a lot stronger than this but I guess not. Homura easily dispatches Hinagiku. Roughly 8 more wins needed to take the crown.

A tough match to start off the M block. Tomoka vs Kuro is a really stacked Round 1 match and both of them really should be reaching a block final if not outright winning a block. I think I'll side with Tomoka winning here but it could go either way. The second match on the other hand it pretty weak. I guess I'll pick Haruna but any of the three could win. Yukino should be decently strong while her opponents aren't that great so I have her winning. Kuroneko will win her match and take one step towards taking home the championship.

First match should be a pretty easy win for Mashiro. She did quite well in the preliminary group while the other two had to go through second preliminaries. The second match is similar except Kaede didn't do that well in her group. I still think she can win, though. Third match is yet another tough match for Love Live. I think Umi will win this one but it will be close. Poor Kana. She's pretty strong but she shouldn't be able to beat Syaro.

- I think the Saki voters just said Ro-Kyu-Bu had their time in the spotlight last year, now move on. At least Tomoka didn't end up last and completely out of the tournament. I could see Kuro Matsumi winning her group now which is OK.
(Also note Kuro actually had more votes in her group (despite being 4th) than Tomoka in a different group)

- Apparently, Kuro also chose to series combo over seiyuu combo..... and it almost worked. Fortunately, Kuroneko had just enough votes to avoid the snipe attempt and advance in her group.

A pretty disappointing showing by Tomoka here. Kuro is a pretty tough opponent but Tomoka is supposed to be pretty strong herself. I guess Ro-kyu-bu just isn't as good as it used to be. I didn't really know who would win the second match but ended up pretty close in my Haruna pick. I'm happy to see Chihaya advance, though. Yukinon won with no issue. Not a great start for Kuroneko. I guess Kuro is partially responsible for this but Kuroneko really should be doing a lot better than this. Hayari nearly managing to take out Kuroneko is pretty bad. Do better next time Kuroneko!

What makes you imply that Love Live! is overrated this year?

They're 2-2 in first round matches so far, and they came in 1st or 2nd in all 4 of those matches, with their lowest vote total so far being Nico's 119, which came against a popular Railgun girl. Nozomi managed over 200 votes in a complete stomp of her opponents.

I felt that Love Live! was one of the factions worth watching this year, and I think they've done well enough to warrant that much at least. Now, I did briefly get my hopes up pretty high (probably too high) and think that Love Live! might have even won it all this year. But in my defense, that was back when a lot of people seemed to think that Madoka Magica and Saki were going to decline.

Well, that decline definitely hasn't happened. It now looks very likely to me that either Madoka Magica or Saki will take it again this year.

Onodera takes the stage. Souseiseki and Kei aren't too strong so Onodera shouldn't have too much trouble. Hibiki is likely too weak to take advantage of the Saki split. I'm not sure how much Satoha will benefit from manga only material so I'll stick with Kirame winning. Ro-kyu-bu doesn't look so good so Airi is out of the third match. Stephanie probably isn't strong enough to face an opponent on Ako's level so Saki takes the win here as well. Furude Rika is given another winnable match. While not nearly as strong as when she was in her prime, I think Rika can still pull this off. The Saimoe 2007 champion will win miraculously.

- Yuigahama was a strong opponent for Honoka, but I still think it was more bad luck that she had a match on day 1, the same day that Yuuki (tacos) from Saki ended up 2nd. As for Nico finishing 2nd..... Uiharu did have more prelim votes, but if series voting was factored in, Nico also had to contend with Index/Railgun as a series.

Against anyone else..... little to no trouble for Love Live. What looked like a close match on paper between Umi Sonoda (LL) and Rikka (Chuu2) ended up being a somewhat convincing win for Umi.

- Very convincing win for Mashiro (Unidentified) (almost broke 200 votes)
- Syaro (Usagi) passed 200 votes and more than doubled the votes of both opponents (including a Saki rep)
- Komachi barely gets a third win for OreGairu

Guess I'll get down to watch Mikakunin someday, since I've heard good things about that, also because it shared the same studio with my most favorite comedy of the current anime season. Also might try GochiUsa, although lolis are not my thing most of the time.

Syaro is so rich... in votes. ;)
Her next opponent is Kuroneko, it's not going to be that easy but if she can win there, then she has the block already. I hope she goes far.

The Love Live! are doing well, as Umi just showed by defeating a moderately strong opponent like Rikka. Certainly, it doesn't look like they can win the tournament but they are doing much better than last year (which is something unusual for any series).

Next:
M1-3: supporting Souseiseki. Kosaki won her prelim group Y3 but that was the weakest group in my opinion. On the other hand Souseiseki was just 12th in that 10x Saki group just behind Yuigahama Yui (who managed to defeat Honoka) so I'm not sure who is stronger here. Or maybe the Saki combo will prop Kei to victory.
N1-3: supporting Subara who should win despite the vote split.
O1-3: Ako or Steph, either one is ok but I don't see Ako losing just yet.
P1-3: Rika-chama of course.

I get Mashiro's match right. She wins with lots of room to spare. I'm wrong on the second match, though. Despite her poor showing in preliminaries, Komachi wins her match. Umi does end up having some trouble with Rikka but she manages to win as I thought she would. Syaro stompped her opponent which was pretty obvious. I am surprised that Kana did so badly, though. Looking back, I think I was overestimating how strong Kana was in the past but that still doesn't explain why she did this badly here.

Uka-no-Mitama-no-kami and Kyouko were not only in the same preliminary group but also tied with each other. Tsugumi is mostly a non-factor here so it's pretty much a straight 1 vs 1 match. This is mostly a guess but I have Kyouko winning. The second match will likely go to Tokaku. She's not that strong but her opponents look worse. Sonico and Fino were also in the same group and they also tied but it doesn't matter since Aya will easily win anyways. I have no faith in Kouko actually being as strong as she looked in preliminaries so the fourth match is mostly Chris vs Rin. I think I'll go with Rin winning here. This match also had two characters from the same group, although they didn't tie. Chris lost to Kouko but I expected Chris to rank higher this time.

- Apparently higher prelim votes were a better indication of how strong a challenger is rather than a group winner. Onodera is the 2nd Hanazawa rep to win a group yet finish 2nd in their match. Now I wonder if Chitoge is the only Nisekoi rep getting support or she just happened to get a lucky draw with her two opponents.

Oh, yeah! Souseiseki still strong, even defeating a prelim group winner.
Also happy about Rika-chama winning but that was more expected.

Subara received a lot of votes during the Saki final rush (even more than Satoha) but that wasn't enough to compensate her vote difference. From all characters directly eliminated so far, she is the one who received the most votes (112 votes). The 2nd would be Iona @ Arpeggio (97 votes).

I'm not sure what to say about the first match. Onodera didn't just lose, she wasn't even all that competitive with Souseiseki. Before the tournament, I would have guessed Onodera would be competitive for making the top 16 or so not losing in Round 1. Kirame actually lost to Satoha which also surprises me. It's not like either of them did much in the latest Saki series but at least Kirame had a solid role in a previous season. Maybe the manga material was the deciding factor here. Ako stomps her opponents which is not too surprising I guess. Rika wins! Rika can plausibly win next round as well. Despite being at her weakest, Rika may end the tournament with her best performance in years.

Love Live has an easy match for once. Rin should advance fairly easily. Several weaker characters in the second match makes it hard to call. Miuna seemed to have the best preliminary performance so I'll side with her. Third match has a similar problem. I guess Kumin will win? The sixth Puella Magi takes the stage but I doubt she's as invincible as the main five. On top of that Kasumi should be pretty strong and Rize even stronger. GochiUsa will take another win here.

However, Azuma Tokaku still comes out ahead. Sonico manages to beat Fino but Aya wins as expected. I was hoping Chris could beat Rin but it wasn't to be. Chris does easily beat Kouko who was a higher ranked character from the same group.

It was kind of expected but it's still nice to see Rize doing so well against a Saki and a Madoka characters even if they are minor ones. Gochiusa now has 6 out of 8 characters in Round 2, including all the main cast.

Next:
Q1-2: Nodocchi enters the fray and should have no problem advancing to the next round. I'd prefer to see Dekomori winning but she would need a miracle.
R1-2: the Kinmosa have done really well so far and Karen is one of their strongest characters. Shinku is not weak either but this opponent is probably a bit too much for her. Still, I'll keep some hope that the Rozen Maiden can give the surprise here.
S1-2: Ryuuka might not be in her prime anymore but her opponents aren't strong and the combo will Nodoka will do the rest. It would be great if Chihaya wins though.
T1-2: only match in Round 1 where all characters come from 2nd Prelims. Asuna has my support if nothing else because I don't know the other two. She should win without much trouble I think.

- Another win for Love live. At least Petralka got 2nd.
- Very good win for Aiba. Convincing win for Rize.
- Only the main 5 pmmm reps get a chance to win. Even Nagisa misses out on repchange.
- I guess Kumin can get a win for once even at the expense of Chocolat.

Rin ends up with a solid win. Asagi actually ends up winning the second match and not Miuna. It was fairly close, though. I do get Kumin correct and she has a bit more room to spare in her win. Rize easily wins her match. The Madoka win streak also needs to start all over again but it'll be much harder to break now that only the big five are still in.

Matches: Q1-2 R1-2 S1-2 T1-2

Nodocchi takes the stage and she shouldn't have any problems with opponents at this level. Shinku vs Karen is a tough match. Rozen Maiden seems to be a lot stronger than I expected but I still think Karen can win this one. Ryuuka should win the third match although it won't necessarily be easy. Cure Peace probably isn't completely out of the fourth match. She would have won a few years ago but I'm not so sure about now. I think I'll side with her anyways. I don't really expect much from Asuna.

An easy match for Nodocchi. She has no problems winning. A surprisingly easy match for Karen. I expected Shinku to be much harder to beat. It might be due to the help from Nodocchi but Ryuuka also has less trouble than I thought she would. I guess I should have believed in Asuna more since she does solidly defeat Cure Peace.

Kinmosa puts all 6 of its characters in round 2 while Saki reaches 17, which is more than any other year (there were 15 in 2012).

Characters qualified for next round so far: 27 are from Y groups (newcomer) and 46 from E groups (veteran).
By series (15 newcomer series and 15 veteran series)
- Saki: 17
- Gochiusa, Kinmosa: 6
- Love Live!, Railgun, Madoka: 4
- Oregairu: 3
- Monogatari, Rozen Maiden, Chuu2Koi!, Strike the Blood, D-Frag!, Higurashi: 2
- Sakura Trick, Brynhildr, Sword Art Online, Nisekoi, No Game No Life, Isshuukan Friends, Nourin, Kyoukai no Kanata, Minami-ke, Inari Kon Kon, Non Non Biyori, Mikakunin, OreImo, Akuma no Riddle, Fate/kaleid, Sora no Otoshimono, Chihayafuru: 1

Railgun can (and probably will) reach 7 characters by the end of Round 1. Love Live! could technically also reach 7 but it is less likely. None other series can surpass or even equal Gochiusa and Kinmosa in number of characters in round 2.

As for newcomers & veterans, the newcomers have only 94 entrants left, 3 less than when they started with the 1st prelims, hence saying that the veterans are back to speed with a 19 gal lead with 2nd round participants. this includes 3 more gals qualifying from the 2nd chance qualifiers, doubling their prev. total. while still only 1 newcomer is from the 2nd chancers. As for eliminations, the newcomers stay up by 3 (38-35). while the veterans still have 5 more gals in the step 1 battle royal than the newcomers do. with 216 gals left, the veterans still have a 28 gal lead. strange consistency!

And Saki still has Amae Koromo, Usuzumi Hatsumi, Matsumi Yuu, Sagimori Arata and Miyanaga Saki still to go for the last quarter. Oohoshi Awai, Ryuumonbuchi Touka and Yumeno Maho are potential winners as well.

I strongly support Hanayo today. She is my favorite of the Love Live! girls. Based on prelims results, I didn't have much hope for her but to my surprise she took the early lead and has maintained it thus far although with just a very small advantage. Actually it looks like any of them could win now, which makes it kind of exciting, but I wish it's Hanayo in the end.

- Just like Sakura Kyouko against Tina Sprout, Misaka Mikoto showed no mercy against her opponents (including Enju). She currently has the 2nd highest 1st round vote total so far.

- It wasn't enough for just Koromo to win and advance, Toyone is part of repchange for Saki as well, which eliminates Tsugumi (Nisekoi)

- Nisekoi however had better luck with Marika winning her match convincingly.

- Yu Sonada is going to be really annoyed that Haruka Takayama was completely eliminated from the tournament. Koizumi adds another win for LoveLive.

Q1-4: Pick Preference: Itsuka Kotori (DAL) > Hiro (Hidamari Sketch)
R1-4: Pick Preference: Rin Natsume (Little Busters) > Renge (Non Non Biyori)
S1-4: Pick Preference: Satone (Chuu2) > Hotaru (Non Non Biyori)
T1-4: Pick Preference: Yuuki Mikan (TLR) > Komari (Non Non Biyori)
(If there was no triple NNB combo, Mikan vs. Komari would be interesting because Group winner Komari and 16th place Mikan's prelim vote totals in separate group matches are separated by only 3 votes. And Mikan wants to continue the streak of reaching the second round each year)

Really!!! Wanted to support Non Non Biyori in all 3 matches....... and each one has an opponent that gets my first priority over all three.

I just noticed I made a copy and paste error last time. I meant to have Koromo winning not Toyone. In the end Koromo does end up with a solid win. Myucel wasn't as threatening as I thought and Marika easily wins. Hanayo really surprised me. I thought Elsie would win fairly easily but she's not that close in the end. The Railgun advances as expected.

Matches: U1-1 V1-1 W1-1 X1-1

First match should go to Kuroko. It might be a close match, though. Yuu should easily win the second match. Yuu is one of the strongest Saki characters and her opponents are fairly weak. Maho is pretty weak but her opponents are even weaker. Manaka might have won here normally. However, with both Yuu and Arata around, Maho should be able to pick up enough votes to advance. While Arata isn't as strong as Yuu, she's plenty strong enough to beat Kongou and Tippy. 3 more Saki characters will advance to Round 2!

- A triple NNB combo, Renge appears to be the stronger rep of the main 4..... and Kotori Minami wins the match with room to spare. LoveLive might still have to get stronger if they want to compete with the top factions, but they can be considered a top faction this year as well, and they still have one more rep waiting her turn.

- Non Non Biyori on the other hand not only lost a strong rep (temporarily), but they almost lost group winner Komari as well. Barely won against Benio (I didn't really consider her the strongest of the main 3 of Mikakunin). Hotaru won her match convincingly, but after Kotori/Renge's result, I think Hotaru might meet the same fate in round 2 against her own LoveLive opponent.

- Only best result (opinion) was Kotori Itsuka (DAL) winning her match convincingly

Non Non Biyori don't look nearly as strong as I thought they would be. That Renge could lose against Kotori was already a possibility but Komari only barely managing to defeat Benio really surprised me. Hotaru obtained a solid victory but her opponents were weak anyway. On the plus side for me, now I'm excited about the possibility of Hanayo reaching Round 3.

And we enter the last 4 blocks:
U1-1: Pick: Kuroko (Railgun). Predict that Kuroko will win this match and maybe even the entire block. It's a weak block and the Railgun characters are on fire this year.
For V1-1, W1-1 and X1-1 the possibility of a Saki triple combo is strong but I would like to see only Yuu winning. For the other two matches my picks are Manaka (Nagi no Asukara) and Tippy (Gochiusa).

Itsuka Kotori has no problems winning and neither does Minami Kotori. I had Renge being a lot closer to Kotori and the boost from Hotaru putting her over but in the end Renge doesn't do that well. Hotaru looks fine in her match and it seems like it was Komari who needed the help. She nearly manages to lose to Benio.

Saki was indeed united in their triple combo. Kuroko won her match (expected result but not my choice in the match)

No problems for Kuroko as she easily wins her match. No problems for any of the winners actually as Yuu, Maho and Arata cruise into round 2. I'm not really sold on Maho's strength but a win is a win even if she might be benefiting from a series vote.

I've set up a repository for AST 2014, at the link in my signature. This is basically all the files and information I posted so far, gathered into one post. I will update this information occasionally.

I will also update the post there with Aya Reiko's latest main tournament image (replacing xq90 in the URL with xq95 for higher quality).

Even though I've never watched the latest Precure, I'll keep up the support and vote Snow White ... er, I mean Cure Princess. However, I don't promise voting for her if she ends up in first repechage.

My vote:
<<白雪ひめ(キュアプリンセス)@ハピネスチャージプリキュア!>> (SHIRAYUKI Hime @ Happiness Charge Precure!)

Matches U1-3 V1-3 W1-3 X1-3

Awai vs Kirino in a close match for the first match. I think Kirino will come out on top. Second match is another potentially close match between three characters who aren't that strong. I'll go with Tohka here since she shares a match day with Yoshino. Third match is similar to the second in that it's difficult to call due to a lack of standout characters. Maybe Kana will advance? Yoshino should easily win the fourth match.

Votes:
Oohoshi Awai
Ryuumonbuchi Touka
Tachibana Kana
Yoshino

Predictions:
Kousaka Kirino
Yatogami Tohka
Tachibana Kana
Yoshino

- There was a Saki rep, but didn't look that strong. Ruiko (railgun rep) wasn't really interested in Group V..... and Setsuna (White Album 2) still goes from 2nd prelim to winning her match over 2 1st prelim challengers..... including a possible snipe? of Shiro (No Game No Life). I guess Yu Matsumi (Saki) can thank Ruiko (Railgun) for the asist since it will affect her 2nd round match. (Not really familiar with White Album yet)

- While I wasn't sure about the decision to snipe Shiro, attempting to snipe Maki with Yaya early on was a good idea since I think she could be the stronger of the LoveLive reps. Yaya actually had a decent lead early on as well. Maki however proves that she can't be underestimated by turning a deficit of 30+ votes into a very convincing win.

- Mayoi has a convincing win in her match.

Hachikuji wins a lot easier than I thought she would. I'm really surprised to see Setsuna win. She was in the same group as Shiro and placed 15th relative to Shiro's 2nd. I wonder why there's such a drastic change here. Maki has no trouble with Yaya despite what I originally thought. Saten also easily wins her match.

AWai manages to beat Kirino but Touka fails to beat Tohka. Maybe if Yoshino wasn't around, Touka would have won. I get the third match right and Kana advances to Round 2. Not too surpringly, Yoshino won her match.

Matches U1-4 V1-4 W1-4 X1-4

Round 1 will finally draw to a close with this set of matches. Unless the horses can work some magic, a Saki character will win the first match. I'm not exactly sure who it will be but Hatsumi is probably more likely. Kobeni is a tough opponent for Mami to draw in round 1. Kobeni went even with Rize and Cocoa in preliminaries. I doubt she's actually that strong, though. As a result, she probably can't beat Mami. Natsume might win the third match since her opponents are weak enough. Miyanaga Saki wil close Round 1 with yet another win. Just how many characters do they have in Round 2 now?

The horses are doing pretty well out of the gate. They'll need a bit more horsepower to catch up to Hatsumi, though. I support them with a vote.

I also vote Shino (for the same reason as Suzu), but she's doomed no matter how you look at it.

With nobody I care about advancing to the second round, I'll have to start making up reasons to vote characters.

My votes:
<<調査兵団の馬達@進撃の巨人>> (Horses @ Attack on Titan)
<<天草シノ@生徒会役員共*>> (AMAKUSA Shino @ Seitokai Yakuindomo)

Oh, and a reminder that first repechage begins in two days.

Hm, there appears to be about 20 fake votes each for Horses/Kobeni/Ryuuko/Ouka.

The fake ballots all occur between post 762 and post 782 (along with a couple of what I presume are real ballots), voting only for the above four, and with a really short and generic support message on each one.

At least the person responsible put a bit more effort into hiding the fake votes (compared to the last time I pointed out an instance of fake votes). Not much more, though.

Edit: Apparently someone went on a spamming spree and added another 30 or so fake votes to the above four. If you are using an interim tracker and you are wondering why Kobeni is beating Mami, among other wonders of today, you will come back to reality when you realize what actually happened.

Hachiko

FractalFusion, I checked the tracker, and someone other than those four your mentioned is leading. I think Mami is going to be safe here; she usually dominates the last hour in this round.

Standby in 10 plus stoppage for results...

The horses beating a Saki rep into repechage round is the result of the day.

Out of the troll materials that is Kyuubey, Tippy and the horses, only the horses survive while the other two got eliminated from the tournament. Maybe voters love them horses since they are the most troll-ish out of the troll candidates.

The horses actually put up a bit of a fight but in the end they aren't close to winning. Hatsumi takes first but the horses hang on to second. Kobeni really doesn't seem as strong as she did during preliminaries. Mami ends up winning easily. Natsume wins the third match without much difficulty. AS expected, Saki easily takes the fourth match.

Oh and by the way, there are only 95 names in first repechage, even though there are nominally 96. It's because of the tie for first in one of the matches.

[Out of the troll materials that is Kyuubey, Tippy and the horses, only the horses survive while the other two got eliminated from the tournament. Maybe voters love them horses since they are the most troll-ish out of the troll candidates. Another theory: those who voted for the horses are anti-Saki voters (hey, if I could vote, I would have gone with them over the Saki reps). :p

Railgun's faction strength (and Mikoto's personal strength) is honestly a bit surprising to me. Railgun's girls seemed to fade a bit in the aftermath of Mikoto's controversial victory over Homura a few years back. I guess Railgun has now been forgiven by J-SaiMoe voters for what happened back then.

- Looks like another good character (Kobeni) was given false hope that she could win against a PMMM. At least she is part of repchange, although I doubt her chances of making it through.

- Only real good result this time was Natsume (Tokyo Ravens)

- To think that the Index/Railgun reps were one Index vote away from getting every rep into the second round. Waiting to see what happens when their main lineup goes against a Saki or PMMM rep.

With that the 2011 champ has joined her two successors, and one predecessor in the next round. The other predecessor has to sweat it out with the only two-time finalist in the 'lucky dip' rounds of repêchage.

Another theory: those who voted for the horses are anti-Saki voters (hey, if I could vote, I would have gone with them over the Saki reps). :p

Good theory there, that seems rather plausible.

Interim results (at ~17:20) for top 37 generated from my homemade vote counter. May include possible fakes, provided that they have codes. Posts that have no codes, even if they have name labels, are not counted.

I did not notice any foul play so far, so, assuming that a post has a code, I considered it a valid ballot. I also used both voting threads.

Teru got first place (of course, she is the Champion after all), surpassing Tacos even. Good results for the Love Live! too.

I'm specially happy that Honoka (LL!), Suiseiseki, Ren-chon and Shinku got through. I would have liked Maya and Dekomori too but it just couldn't be.

It might not seem so but the participation today was pretty high for this year's standards : 447 ballots.

Not her year again, at least Hina is consistent now. Nagi is in first place over the history of the tournament outright now (wins, votes and number of matches), not bad for a two-time bridesmaid. Good to see some Kyguiama Party representation continuing as it just would not be the business end of Saimoe without it.

Toki just can't seem to stay away from strong opponents. She was in the same group as Akaza Akari in 2012, the same group as Mami in 2013 and now shares are group with Kaname Madoka the reigning Saimoe 2013 Champion. I was pretty hyped up for Toki vs Mami last year as a showdown between the 2011 and 2012 champions but Saki got thrown under a bus half way in the contest so the match didn't really pan out. Now we've got the 2012 and 2013 champions facing off and so far both series look to be in top shape. Toki's round 1 match involved three Saki characters so it was totally useless. While the non-Nagia Puella Magi looked great, Madoka was only okay in Round 1. Defeating a Puella Magi is no easy task, but I think Toki might be able to pull it off so I'm siding with her winning. As for the other two matches, Shizuno should beat Kana with help from Toki. Mihoko should also beat Nozomi with help from Toki. They would probably win anyways but Toki support just seals the deal.

A2-1: Pick preference: Shizuno (Saki) > Kana Minami
E2-1: Picking: Mihoko (Saki)

Individual predictions:
A2-1: Shizuno (A triple Saki combo should be enough for Shizuno to win, but I wouldn't put it past Kana (Boss) Minami to go with a Madoka alliance to pull off another win.)
C2-2: Madoka (Both Madoka and Toki are AST winners and they appear strong enough to get through repchange, so there really is no advantage for either side to snipe the other. I don't thinnk Madoka wants to be the first PMMM rep to lose a 1-on-1 match against a non-PMMM rep though.)
E2-1: Nozomi (Saki vs. LoveLive..... Nozomi looks strong enough to win against Mihoko, maybe even against a triple Saki combo. Of course, she could also try a temporary alliance of her own to reach the next round)

Sometimes I forget that the Puella Magi are invincible. This is always followed up with a reminder that they really aren't able to lose. Madoka receives over 60% of the votes and destroys Toki. Is there no one that can stop the Puella Magi this year? Shizuno won as expected but I'm surprised to see Mihoko go down so easily. She did make the semifinals a few years back and her series is still relevant. Even if she didn't win, she could have made it more of a match with Nozomi.

It's actually a pretty bad sign for everyone else if Sayaka does win this. I mean if Shinobu can't win against one of the weaker Puella Magi, who can? Hmmm..... no real surprises in previous and current match results. I guess it would be a moral victory for Shinobu to keep Sayaka under 200 and not to lose by more than double. It won't help her in repchange though since she has to make it past two repchange rounds and hope she is one of the eight at the end of repchange to return to the tournament.

(Edit: Current match picks)
B2-2: Picking (Predicting): Nibutani (Chuu2) (No other factions involved today, so it looks like Nibutani only has to worry about Eli (LoveLive). Nibutani had the convincing win while Eli won against a stronger Suiseiseki.

A Puella Magi decisively wins again! Sayaka easily defeats Shinobu. Unlike with Madoka's match, the vote total for this match isn't any higher than normal so maybe Shinobu wasn't really considered a threat to Sayaka to begin with? At least Alice wins as expected to bring home one win for Kiniro Mosaic. Also I am right in Kyouko being the Saki character to advance.

"Did Anime Show A win 2 of the last 3 J-SaiMoe competitions? If so, they're not eligible to compete this time."

That would be enough to prevent the saimoe equivalent of sports dynasties, which I get the impression a lot of saimoe fans don't like.

If Madoka Magica wins again this year, that'll be 3 of the last 4 J-SaiMoe Championships claimed by them. Winning 3 (or more) out of the last 4 league championships is generally considered a dynasty in pro sports.

For me I feel like it's either Madoka dominating again or something similar to International Saimoe where the dominating series/character gets sniped near the end. Well if it is the former I wonder why Madoka haven't gotten weaker despite no new materials coming out.

I think some of it might be a relative lack of moe-centric anime shows since the Rebellion movie aired in theaters. The K-On wave has petered out a bit it seems to me (idol-themed shows seemingly taken up where that wave left off).

Spring and Summer 2014 didn't have a lot of moe-centric all-girls shows (and these shows tend to be the ones that do big in J-SaiMoe judging by Madoka Magica and Saki dominance the last few years).

Just gonna break my lurking to say that... it's not like PMMM is the only faction guilty of dominating other candidates... if you ask me Saki is still the bigger offenders... I mean sure they lose against PMMM but PMMM only brings 5 main contenders... Saki OTOH... just look at the picture graphs... the matches are literally littered with Saki representatives <_<

If they're going to limit a series for winning they should also limit the number of contenders a series can bring into this.

Cocoa is strong but Uiharu is a tough opponent. With help from Chino, Cocoa will put up a good fight but I don't think she'll actually beat Uiharu. Second match should go to Kurumi. No Game No Life just isn't a very strong series. Chino has a tough match herself against Kaori. I'll bank on Chino winning here but she could lose.

Jibril

6 votes separate a faction of two (one since Rikka is in repchange) against a faction of nine going into the final half hour (all votes included/I don't really follow legit vs. fake).

- Well......... LoveLive already knows that a stronger "unified" faction can win against any challenger (Uiharu <Railgun> > Nico <LoveLive>), so regardless of who is stronger or weaker in the LL faction, in order to have a chance against the other stronger factions including the PMMM's, they have to resort to the numbers game as well. In this case, they proven they can beat a challenger with the highest prelim votes (Nibutani) In addition, they proven for a second (or third) time that they can give themselves an early handicap and still win the match.

- Surprised that Nadeko won her match convincingly.

- Only good result today was Yuigahama winning her match.

1st 253 Ayase Eli @ Love Live!
2nd 237 Nibutani Shinka @ Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren

D2-1

1st 302 Sengoku Nadeko @ Monogatari Series: Second Season
2nd 139 Oomiya Isami @ Kin'iro Mosaic

Actually Nadeko winning is not surprising to me, her prelim votes were fairly high, her vote percentage in the tournament has been pretty good, and her performance so far is even better than Hitagi from the same series.

So happy that Yui also won convincingly.

I'm impressed by Eli's performance. She had a 50 vote disadvantage by midday, 10 hours later she had caught up and then surpassed her opponent by a fair amount of votes. Important to remember for future LL! matches that even if they start slow, they can gather many votes on the second half of the match.

I hope Kokoa and Chino will do well in the next set of matches although I wouldn't mind if it's Kaori who wins instead of Chino.

Maybe Love Live can be capable of giving PMMM trouble, since so far what I've seen they seem to be on the stronger side strategy wise.

My take on the LL! girls is that most (all?) of them have a solid base of support in the low 200s, but perhaps minimal growth potential. I think that Honoka's 1st Round loss sort of woke up the LL! voters, and has caused them to pay closer attention to matches involving LL! girls and to vote very strategically (letting it build up slow, and coming in steady and strong in the 2nd half).

Depending on how much overlap they have with the PMMM voters, one of them might be able to knock off a Puella Magi, but any LL! girl would be an underdog against any Puella Magi. I say overlap because my various pixiv image searches suggest to me that a lot of Madoka Magica fans also like LL! (and vice versa). For example, it's not uncommon for me to see an artist with a Madoka Magica avatar have LL! artwork. I've also seen some image dumps that are split between LL! and Madoka Magica.

My guess on Love Live voters for now is that the only time they are awake 100% is when some major faction like Saki pops up in front of them specifically round 2 and later, looking at how Nozomi did. This is only if it turns out Love Live and Madoka voters barely overlap.

Honoka's loss was a wake up call? Only a few days later Nico got smashed by Uiharu. Nico only had 119 votes to Uiharu's 189.

While I guess anyone can pull off a miracle upset, I don't see any particular reason the upset will be coming from Love Live. Shinka is a very strong opponent. Even just scraping by her probably puts Eli among the strongest non-Puella Magi. However, it's not a performance on the same level as 60% on Toki and Oomiya Shinobu. It's also questionable to use Love Live's popularity outside of Saimoe to judge Saimoe results. Live Love should be on Madoka's level or even higher if Saimoe popularity matched their external popularity. That clearly isn't the case.

Well, perhaps Nico's loss was the wake-up call then. LL! hasn't lost a match since Nico's loss, IIRC.

While I guess anyone can pull off a miracle upset, I don't see any particular reason the upset will be coming from Love Live.

I don't see any particular reason why it wouldn't come from Love Live, if it comes from anywhere. I think raising Love Live! as a possible challenge to PMMM is probably as legitimate as raising any other competitor would be, with the possible exception of Raildex.

It's also questionable to use Love Live's popularity outside of Saimoe to judge Saimoe results.

Most of the strong Saimoe competitors over the years have come from anime shows that are very popular in general. Mari-Mite, Nanoha, Rozen Maiden, K-On, Ore no Imouto, Madoka Magica, Raildex, Saki - These all sold decently well (if not great), and all were (or are) popular in the general anime fandom. Sure it's not a perfect 100% overlap, but there's enough reason here to be cautiously hopeful at least.

Live Love should be on Madoka's level or even higher if Saimoe popularity matched their external popularity.

I think your argument here is a bit off-base.

LL Season 2 sold fantastically well, but one could argue that the Rebellion movie was on an even higher level of popularity than that.

I'm not really an expert in this area but anime movies and anime series aren't comparable. For example The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya sold 200+k. Despite that, Haruhi and Yuki had a fairly lackluster year. The glory days for the Haruhi series was several years before that.

In the absence of better information, it's not a bad guess to predict that high sales in a series that may appeal to Saimoe voters would lead to superstar characters. However, that guess should only last as long as until they take the field and prove the prediction right or wrong.

The way I see it external popularity doesn't really necessarily apply in JAST. Sure it helps after all if something is popular externally then it raises the chances that a JAST voter would be part of that fanbase... but I mean let's just look at the sales... both Love Live! and Madoka Magica had thousands of sales... but here we are in JAST and the most they can muster is 200-300 hundreds...

It's like those polls that come up with somewhat weird results and the total number of voters hardly break the thousands... it's hardly a good representation of external popularity...

- And the Railgun challengers continue to win their matches convincingly. Uiharu advances to the next round over Cocoa.

It looks like the group A and Group G finals match have the same match date, so a win by Frenda in today's match would not only guarantee a Railgun rep in the top 32, they could be given the option of combo support for Misaki Shokuhou in her match against Shizuno (Saki).

- Kurumi with another convincing Saki win
- Despite Cocoa's loss, Chino managed to win for GochiUsa. It looked like a close match between her and Kaori early on though.
