Okay, it looks to me that this film is going to have original content; no continuation from the end of Mother's Rosario going into the Alicization arc. Nothing from the Light Novels at all is what I'm basically getting.

Am I wrong?

They can use prologue 2 from 9th volume... but that's all. Another words there's 90% chances that it will be either some recap movie or original content.

I wanted Alicization anime - volumes 9 -14 - not something like this... :/

Edit:
The film project will be a completely new anime work, and Tomohiko Ito is returning from the two TV anime series and the anime special to direct the film at A-1 Pictures. Shingo Adachi is also returning from the TV anime to design the characters. Kawahara is writing a new story for the film.
Yep, it will original content.

Bah, anime original. I wish they would pick up more of Progressive to adapt instead. :/

Maybe based on the PSP games' contents?

Interesting. Really curious to see what the content for the movie will be, especially since it's an original story by Kawahara :eyebrow:.

Maybe a story set back in SAO, in the vein of Progressive, or an original story that will setup the Alicization adaption? Just a lot of possibilities, though I think I'd prefer the former scenario then the latter, as a possible chance to give more limelight to the SAO era cast, setting, and give us more Kirito x Asuna :D.

Definitely looking forward to seeing more from this :).

Considering Extra Edition was how they announced S2, I imagine they'll announce S3 at the end of the movie (or the movie might actually be related to Alicization)

More info on the 10th, when DBM releases.

I don't think Alicization will fit in a movie format (or will fit terribly and not make sense to someone who hasn't read the LNs), so I think it's better the movie is a standalone story. Alicization seems more fit for at least a 1 cour series. 2 cour if they want to do it properly.

Alicization makes up half the books at this point.
2 cours would be considerably rushed, going by the pacing of the previous seasons.

Dr. Casey
2015-10-05, 12:37
Yeah, and we're still a few volumes away from the end, so Alicization will end up taking well more than half the series. A proper adaptation would need to pull a Prisma Illya and have multiple seasons, probably 2-3 two cours.

I think ALO has plenty of untapped potential to make an interesting original story. There should be a void iirc between the period Asuna was rescued to the start of MR or GGO where it could be slotted in. For SAO stories, maybe leave it up to Progressive (which I hope we'll see animated in the future) to cover them?

I don't get how this AR is different from VR diving. In VR, you basically abandon all real sensations to experience a virtual reality, abandoning your physical body. I understand that AR basically imposes itself on reality, but if you don't end up abandoning the physical body how does it work?

I want to know the timeline of the movie's story. Mother's Rosario ends in April 2026 and Alicization takes place from late June to August 2026. More info on the movie says the new device Augma is developed in 2026.

The movie will be released in 2017 and by then the LN might have finished Alicization arc. So what if the movie takes place after Alicization and the anime skipped Alicization.

As someone else mentioned before, an original story set in ALO could make for a really good movie (or series). Gorgeous visuals, flashy adventures and battles, alliances, betrayals and wars between factions...

Now that I think of it, some of the best SAO fics/crossovers I've read use ALO as a setting...

In other news, I've decided to pick up the novels. I don't mind the movie, but I do mind the fact that it could take years until SAO III is released.

So this being said... Alicization, here I come!

Good timing since the first novel set after the anime just came out the past month. I actually haven't gotten round to read it yet. Also: do pick up Progressive. It's the story I was personally hopping to get out of SAO when the anime first came out. :)

I've known about Progressive for a while, but didn't feel like reading it since I already know how SAO goes and ends. But one day... maybe... if only for Argo-chan... :p

Speaking of Argo, I guess she won't be appearing in the movie... Well, it makes sense, seeing that she was almost non-existent in the anime....

Yui Is My Wife
2016-09-05, 02:44
Ah, the trailer implies that post-Mother's Rosario, the infancy of the Technology where one is ALWAYS connected to the Internet (as shown in Accel World) has surfaced, allowing Kirito, Asuna and Yui-chan to be together "offline" as well. :)

It's heartwarming to see that finally, their family is finally closer to a "real" one in every sense of the word... :)

...but I have STRONG doubts Asuna's cold ice-bitch-mom will accept Yui-chan as a "granddaughter" :(

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale Film's English 2nd Teaser Video Introduces New Characters (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-10-02/sword-art-online-ordinal-scale-film-english-2nd-teaser-video-introduces-new-characters/.107146):
The company describes the movie's story:
It's just a game,or so I thought.
A brand new story written by original author, Reki Kawahara!! People everywhere were enjoying a new game called Ordinal Scale, an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma, a new wearable console designed for AR (augmented reality) gaming. But, the players had no idea that a nightmare from the virtual world was starting to spread into reality!! As his fellow players find themselves in danger, the hero is called upon once again.

The new characters and Aniplex of America's descriptions include:
Yuna, "an idol in the AR world of Ordinal Scale. If a player encounters her in the game, they can acquire special upgrades."

Dr. Shigemura, "a developer and an authority on non-invasive BMI (Brain Machine Interface) research. He is also a professor in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at Toho Technological University. Due to his radical theories on electrical physiology, his peers regard him as a crackpot."

Eiji, "a mysterious young swordsman, who is the top ranked player in Ordinal Scale. Kirito and his friends encounter him during gameplay."

As his fellow players find themselves in danger, the hero is called upon once again.

Hmm... I wouldn't be surprised if it went something like this:

Kirito's movements are slowed down by his belief that his avatar's movements are linked to those of his real body. However, near the end of the movie, Kirito realizes that he can move his avatar independently from his body by willpower alone! As a result, he goes full-dive mode and defeats the final boss, whoever/whatever it may be... :heh:

The last battle scene was actually so uplifting that my lips couldn’t stop trembling when I was saying my lines during postrecording.”

Seeing as this story will be a movie, and it could even be said to have an all-star cast due to all the characters that will appear, will there be any characters that will be particularly featured?

Kawahara: I was not aware of this while writing the story, but Liz's and Silica's screentime has increased. I even had 120 minutes to work with, so their screentime increased rapidly as I fleshed out the story. Particularly, Silica became a rather important key character.

Just watched the movie today in my local cinema. As a casual watcher, not SAO fan, i think it's ok, but production quality is certainly high for this one. I'm just a bit disappointed at the villain, how to say this... Doesn't bring much impact in my view.

There's an after credit scene, so stay on your seat.

Kikuoka is there with a new project, Rath or something. seems like it's a big hint for 3rd season

A review by someone who watched the film (http://www.anime-now.com/entry/2017/02/20/000043?utm_campaign=ANN):
The article contains spoilers about the general plot of Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale.
Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale picks up the story of our heroes a week and a half after the end of Sword Art Online II. All in all, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale is a welcome and necessary-feeling addition to the Sword Art Online franchise. It has all the action you’ve come to expect mixed with philosophical musings on the nature of self and memories. This in turn is wrapped in a story that further develops our heroes and strengthens their interpersonal relationships–preparing both Kirito and Asuna for the climatic trials still yet to come.

Why There Is No Sword Art Online VRMMO Game and What the Future May Bring (http://www.anime-now.com/entry/2016/11/09/000019), interview by:
Yosuke Futami, a man deeply involved with worldwide hit Sword Art Online. He’s been a producer on both seasons of the anime–as well as the upcoming theatrical film–and is one of the key visionaries for the franchise’s video game series.

...Referring to as Sayaka Kanda as Yuna: the diva of Ordinal Scale (inspired by Avril Lavigne according to staff at event presentation) and Rina Hidaka as Silica...

——Shigemura's role will be performed by Kaga Takeshi, Eiji by Inoue Yoshio, and Yuna by Kanda Sayaka; Kawahara-sensei, have you had a say in their casting?
Kawahara: This was a decision made by Aniplex. I was told that these three fine people have been cast to draw the attention of more people to SAO.

——How were Shigemura and Yuna, the other original characters aside from Eiji in the SAO movie, came to be?
Actually, Shigemura is a character who was already mentioned, though only in name, in the original work, thus I already had an image of him to some extent from the start. As for Yuna, I was thinking "I want to have a diva character appear in the movie" from the very start. From there, I wavered on "How should I incorporate her?" as an AR idol and "How much human should I make her?" as a character.

——I have heard that you watched the post-recording; how was it?
Kawahara: It might be a thing of nuance, but I feel like there's a difference in the performance of movie actors and anime voice actors. Maybe it's because of the anime-like exaggerations, but it feels more vivid. Particularly, there is a scene where Kanda-san, playing the role of Yuna, sings during the movie, and it was amazing. As for the song, even I have not heard the full version yet. There is a scene in the movie where Silica sings Yuna's song in a karaoke. I have scene the post-recording of that scene and I still feel impressed by how Hidaka Rina sang it in Silica's voice. I am looking forward to hearing the real Yuna's song sung by Kanda-san.

The points these two offered were technical. Not subjective. On a technical level, SAO is a train wreck.

So gigguk said he 100th floor boss was amazing, but if I recall correctly didn't Kayaba say he had planned on being the last boss during the death game? So there shouldn't have even been a monster boss for the 100th floor.

The points "those two" offer are as subjective as any other point. And that's ignoring the fact that they've both made false claims about the series, and ignored plot points explained in the show for the purpose of calling something else a plot hole.

Anyways, when it comes to the 100th floor boss, I don't know about Ordinal Scale, but the video games (the IRL ones, like Hollow Fragment) had Two bosses at the 100th floor, which as Kawahara has said, isn't all that uncommon in JRPGs (having a Big boss, only to reveal a True boss)

False claims? Like what? I know digi made some mistakes in his videos because of some source material, but his remaining points hold.

They pointed out logical inconsistencies in the premise, character shafting, wasting opportunities for character development, contrivances, and plot holes. All technical aspects that cannot be dismissed as subjective. Reki Kawahara has confessed that there are plot holes in the nerve gear gimmick, but he couldn't think of anything else. He has admitted that he is unable to write female characters that aren't in love with Kirito. He likes Klein but cuts his screen time in favor of giving more to the girls because it's what the fans want and he makes up the plot and characters as he writes instead of planning it out beforehand. You and every other fan's ability to stomach these flaws, enjoy it, and call it good is your opinion as is your right, but that is no reason not to call these things out for what they are.

Would Kayaba have done that? We really don't know much about him, but if he wanted to be the last boss I doubt he share it.

Because tickets on the first day of a month in Japan are cheaper I went and watched the movie. It's really SAO as you'd expect it. If you like SAO and can overlook it's flaws you'll like the movie. If you have problems with it's flaws, it's more of the same in the movie. Production value was high of course, lots of flash and bang (and they brought out Starburst Stream). And by the end of the movie Kirito's reached a new level of broken. :heh:

And the way they deal with that is to just write something else. Accel world and isolator are more structured and technically better than SAO. Reki doesn't care to fix SAO. He just goes with what is there. Hence Alicization is just Reki going YOLO and it's actually enjoyable because of that compared to all of its previous arcs.

Hopefully this will attempt to salvage the character of the antagonists.

So Kirito comes into conflict with Eiji and presumably fights him. I haven't watched the film, but wouldn't it make more sense to aim for the opponent's augma gear instead of bashing each other with invisible swords?

Hopefully this will attempt to salvage the character of the antagonists.

Kawahara: One difference with a screenplay is, you don't get to depict what's going on inside the character's heads. So I found that to be somewhat of a challenge.
However, in a screenplay, you get to play with very concrete events. That was a challenge that was fun to pursue.

Maybe he wants to depict what's going on inside the character's heads in that novel.
From the SAO wiki (http://swordartonline.wikia.com/wiki/Sword_Art_Online_Hopeful_Chant), Hopeful Chant preview:
October 2023, approximately one year after the SAO incident began.

In this death game where it is impossible to log out, forty floors out of a hundred have been reached. At this front line, the Dragon Knights Brigade, the Divine Division, and Fuurinkazan, compete to beat this game.

On this day, a new player joined the ranks of the strongest guild, the Knights of the Blood: Nautilus, an ambitious young swordsman skilled with the one-handed sword.

However, the moment he encountered a high level monster within the dungeon, Nautilus, who had entered to protect the flank of the deputy guild leader Asuna, became no longer able to move due to the "fear of death".

In the midst of his failure, the Black Swordsman, appearing like a gust of wind, came to assist, therefore making Nautilus very disappointed in himself. Like this, how would he be able to fulfill his promise that day - a promise he had made the day he realized he was in a death game, with a girl more important than anyone else -
At the SAO wiki they have the movie plot, it is a major spoiler.

well, I had the opportunity to go to US and see the film, the film was very entertaining (though, I had already read many spoilers so many times I was not surprised at what was happening in the film).

Something that really surprised me was the level of comedy (since they increase the comedy more than normal, which was used in the anime) but this was something very nice , and the fight with final Boss was very good, although the only downside of the film were the antagonists were some cliche that American films are used (from my point of view).

It was tough with the subs since I was sitting in the second most front row. So my entire vision was covered with the subs rofl.

I loved that Asuna got a lot more focus and screentime, but

I felt that she was still thrust in the inevitable situation where she has to be "saved" by Kirito once again near the end

BUT THE FREAKIN AUDIENCE at my showing...some were making loud remarks and many were laughing at some extremely inappropriate parts of the movie. I like the passion and excitement of anime fans...but goddamn. It's like when a fuckin anime movie gets shown, all movie theater etiquette gets thrown out the window. I will never forgive them when the whole audience started laughing at

the part when Kirito hugs Asuna and falls on her chest after reading her diary. It was a very emotional moment completely ruined by childish laughter.

That's so saddening. It ruins a cinema experience and makes one prefer to watch it at home, alone or with close friends who know better how to behave.

I....had the completely opposite reaction to that.
The viewers at my screening did the same, but I don't get why you'd think it was so bad. It was in fact a bit silly how Kirito dove straight into Asuna's chest there despite the emotion of the scene. :heh: Though most of the viewers quickly stopped laughing. I definitely didn't get any feelings of inappropriate reaction from anybody.

I just didn't have the same reaction you guys are having to that. I love how everybody was laughing and cheering throughout the movie (not every second or minute of the movie of course), like how everybody went "OH SH*T" (they didn't actually say those exact words of course) when the level 100 boss revealed its huge health total and then its full heal ability. This is exactly the kind of movie experience I love, and precisely what I look forward to so much when I go see a movie. :)

I can ALMOST understand how that scene can be interpreted as silly "cos anime amirite," but still. It was painfully obvious what the intentional mood was supposed to be for that scene, and the audience laughed throughout the entire thing. They didn't stop at all.

The only redeeming moment of the rowdy and obnoxious crowd at my showing was

at the end where Asuna came in to join the party. And then when Yui came and gave everyone their OG costumes and equipment. And then when every character from every SAO season came out of nowhere to fight the final boss. That was a fantastic moment of crowd reaction and excitement. But that's it.

And yes, Alicization is all but confirmed.

One question (sort of) though,
in Asuna's bath scene in the original uncensored version, they showed more than her head, right?

The scene is censored in all cinemas (including cinemas in america and eropa), except the cinemas of Japan, the cinemas of Japan shows the scene uncensored
As far as I know, all screenings of the movie so far have been in sub.
Dubs, most likely, will come only later. Not that I care much, since I prefer subs :D

Rumours say that there is a chance that the movie is English dubbed (by artists of the English version), but it would be a great time later, must not lose hope lol.

I was watching it with a couple and they told me that they do that all the time when kirito fell on Asuna's chest and didn't find the scene funny at all but found it normal. So I'm glad to see that part is actually realistic. Though a bunch of other people did laugh in the theater but I don't care about them. So many cute scenes between kirito and Asuna though. Kyaaa

Fantastic animation and the action was awesome. yuki kajiura's music on the loud speakers was amazing as well. Sayaka kanda singed pretty well as expected of a singer. The plot was good enough for a two hour film and the final boss fight was simply epic. Nice to see at the end with confirmation of alicization, the best and longest arc of SAO. Though I expected it when aniplex said that they would adapt all of monogatari and Sao. I am hoping for a really long airing.

Comments from reddit

By someone who has read Hopeful Chant:
The reason why Eiji went out of his way to break Klein's arm was because it turns out that Yuna was granted one of the unknown Extra skills similar to Kirito's <<Dual Wield>> in the form of <<Bard>> with the skill <<Chant>> which grants buff to party members(STRUP/DEFUP). Unlike Eiji she began to fight on the front lines but she died early on when she tagged along whith Fuurinkazan in an accident against a boss monster. The Jar that Yuna carried throughout the movie that contained the Fluctlights was actually a Candy Jar that Yuna gave to Eiji before she died.

Regarding Kirito's sword:
I think the last sword was Durandal, a legendary sword from The Song of Roland. It's said that Durandal is unbreakable and it makes its wielder unkillable and all powerful. Seems to fit with the idea of being rank 1 in Ordinal Scale. Also, Durandal is handed down by an archangel, and An Incarnate of the Radius looked like an angelic being.
It was probably Durandal. Durandal is unbreakable and can destroy anything. The wielder of Durandal is nigh-invincible and all powerful. It is bestowed by an archangel to a hero. It is said however, that the one that wields Durandal is cursed to one day die in battle...
In ancient mythology, Durandal is the most powerful sword in existence, even more so than other legendary swords like Excalibur and the Kusunagi No Tsurugi.
Durandal is French, it means Endurer in English. Durandal is unbreakable and bestows upon its wielder god-like powers. The wielder of Durandal is nigh-invincible and together there is no god or man in the universe that can beat them.
However, Durandal is cursed. If the wielder does not give up Durandal, they will one day die in battle despite their incredible power.
Durandal is given by an archangel to mortal heroes, usually to accomplish some kind of great task.
All of this is stuff I learned from my brother, who has a bachelor's degree in what is basically ancient mythology.
Given what we have seen of Excalibur in SAO, and the fact that Kawahara is a giant fucking nerd for all things myth, I think it's pretty likely that the sword Kirito got after defeating An Incarnate of the Radius, was in fact Durandal

Post by ZeHaffen:
I'd bet the movie's final boss was the intended final boss given a normal release for the game. I mean, if the game's creator came up to you and said "yeah, I myself will be the final boss, so don't bother making one" I think a lot of questions would be raised.
If Heathcliff wasn't post-Floor 100 boss then he probably just reworked it right before release to remove the intended boss and replace it with himself.

You also would be seeing her naked backside and butt as she gets out of the bath if the picture I seen is correct. I already aspect the bath scene would be uncensored for the BD because the screening I went too the bath scene was entirely censored with a shampoo bottle taking the entire scene. It's probably was removed so people wouldn't complain about the fan-service and how certain countrys have strict rules regarding nudity.

Kawahara was asking in the interview would they upgrade the bath scene for the BD. Director Ito talked about the stuff that was censored for the movie showing that he wasn't allow to show despite wanting it to be seen that would be added in the BD like Asuna getting out of the bath being censored by shampoo and her nipple for her breasts being shown.

The rental DVD version of the Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale anime film debuted on Tuesday with a new intro text screen added before film starts. The new text confirms that the film's post-credits scene is a teaser trailer for an upcoming "new work."
The original theatrical version of the film already included the teaser after the ending credits, but it did not have this new intro text screen. In the teaser, a character mentions, "Welcome to Rath."
The "Dengeki Bunko Aki no Saiten 2017" event's Sword Art Online stage panel will have announcements for new developments in the franchise, including but not limited to games.

The Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale film hit shop shelves as a rental DVD in Japan on Tuesday. Some fans hurried to pick up a copy to confirm whether the bath scene reveals Asuna's "assets." Fanboys in Japan are rejoicing because the rental release does include a brief reveal of Asuna's nipple around the 25:52 mark as she is getting out of the bath. The scene also reveals the popular character's rear end. The anime film's staff said during an interview published in July that the Blu-ray Disc release of the film could have an upgraded bath scene with more detail. During the interview, Ito said that both a version that shows Asuna's nipple and a version that doesn't were made. Additionally, he suggested that the reveal was very slight.

Seen it now.

A game where you fight raid bosses in the real world with your own body could never function as advertised, but something like that is at least plausible, whereas I found the VR games of the anime completely ridiculous. Still..these characters are clearly meeting PHYSICAL RESISTANCE when clashing with an AR monster, or hitting each other with AR weapons. How? HOWWW?? I loved the boss fights, but this always bothered me.

Anyways, the anime got a lot better for me when they moved to the real world, and this movie follows up on that nicely. Brilliant direction! Not only that, the story was actually pretty interesting. There's plenty of cameos for all characters, there's a couple of new ones who were cool, the music was good, the animation work just about flawless, Kirito finally stops being a playboy and focuses on Asuna...good!

I'm astonished, actually. I used to be a mild hater of SAO, and yet this is now one of my favorite anime movies. One might be forgiven for thinking A-1 pictures has become a studio that just churns out mediocre crap, but apparently when they get serious, it's still something to behold.
