Galko-chan is realistically sexy. Okay... I don't even know what that means but I don't know how to explain my fondness of her. lol Anyway, it is a bit of a surprise that this series actually is an 8-minute thing, longer than I expected. However the 1st episode didn't disappoint so far. Brief, quick introductions and then right onto the meat, literally. It's really informative in various ways, I definitely learned a thing or two... and it touches on subjects that a lot of shows would never dare mention. Things only seen in certain doujinshis.:heh: Galko's "gyaruru!" at the beginning was adorable. And then I had a good laugh at most of Galko's twists that happened at the end of a skit, especially when she mentioned that boy who got his fingers broken because he tried to stab her butt.:heh::heh:

Anyway, definite keeper. I'm a fan of Galko-chan already and I'm sure I will learn some more useful... and more importantly useless things that I didn't want to know!

The fun bit was seeing the girls talk pretty naturally about all this stuff. Screw any image of pure waifus that only dabble in cuteness, let's discuss burning butts :heh:.

I was rather amused that Gyaruko didn't realise just what sort of pink "balloon" Otako gave her to draw on before she blew it up...

Episode 1
It was an okay episode. It had some amusing stuff here and there. I think I'll continue this one a bit. It's just seven minutes so it won't hurt I guess. Although the Blondie MC doesn't exactly look appealing. Would have given me another reason if she was.

Also, I see... boobs size... I learned something new today.

Not bad. Not spectacular, but not bad for a short. I honestly like characters like Galko, who seem to be nasty and worldly and "slutty" but turn out to actually be incredibly innocent, shy and sweet. And forgive me if anyone finds "slutty" offensive, but hearing the way they talk about her can you think of a better word for their thoughts on her character? They did a great job of hammering this misconception in quick with the truth behind her "wild night". And forgive me for saying that my opinion of her went up when she revealed that she knew massages had nothing to do with breast growth because no man had ever touched hers. My opinion in that area is the same regardless of gender: self control and high standards concerning who you'll go all the way with and when are great traits, so lack of experience is something one should be proud of.

All that said, I will admit I found a couple of the discussions a little gross. I kinda knew that girls had hair there too, but I really didn't need to hear people talk about it. Not sure whether that's better or worse than hearing girls talk explicitly about their cycles, will have to wait and see.

Looking over this episode though, I think my favorite spot was when Galko texted from the restroom that she'd cut off all her eyebrows.

More icky stuff and biology in episode 2. I normally avoid stories with lots of cringe factor dialogue in them but this one, it's OK for some reason. Perhaps it's because the girls (and the boys to a lesser extent) aren't as creeped out about what they're discussing as normal anime characters would be.

The seiyuu in charge of the voice-over at the beginning of each episode is doing a wonderful job of asking "icky stuff" questions in a delightfully prim schoolmarmish manner.

"Is it true that virgins use pads, and non-virgins use tampons?"

Oh, and the poster the girls are standing in front of in the title card half-way through this episode? It's for the "Flower Garden" Proctology Clinic which offers a "Haemorrhoids removed while you wait" service...

Episode 2 was once again quite... enlightening. Women hygiene products can be a bit mysterious to guys so the first segment was especially interesting. How do you take those pads out?

Galko is such a nice girl, she took one bite of Otako bread and brought a whole lot of homemade one next day.

I laughed when the blonde guy told the other two Galko would wear pink panties, but in reality he was happy because he knew she had white ones. Even if the reasoning behind it was absurd.

Oppai bread!

The first part made me laugh, simple because of the girls innocence. The answer to the opening question is no people.

If you mean tampons they have a string attached to them for easy removal. Just do a image search for them and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Still a rather amusing episode, even if the discussions sometimes go into unpleasant areas (and I seriously hope I never actually see a pair of high school girls betting on whether their friend's taking a leak or a dump). Galko just keeps coming across as more and more innocent. Cute how she thinks everyone's staring because she uses such a childish term for her father.
As for Ojou, I'm sort of curious as to whether she has any "experience". It could go either way right now. They seem to like playing up her casual view of embarrassing matters as a contrast to her appearance as an innocent maiden, both untouched and untouchable. I wouldn't be surprised to find that they have her be the one wearing pink, and they could really get a lot out of both ends, treating her as a virgin who's just so innocent that she can't understand why anyone would be embarrassed about the uterus and other things, or treating her as a "good bad girl" whose innocence somehow led her to view sex in an absurdly casual way, so that it's literally no big deal to her and has no impact on her look or behavior (literally a "pure-type ***** as Otako said).

Bet Ojou wears black kinky ones. XD
I think her parents are not letting her hold any "blade" because they fear it might awaken her Yandere character. XD

Yeah by some of the characters "logic" Ojou wearing anything but white panties would make her an "experienced girl"or at least not innocent, and if the show ever touches on it again I hope they completely break them of these assumptions. Because this doesn't actually correlate to real life. Women will wear what they like and feel comfortable in which often has less to do with ones sexual activity and probably more to do with where a woman may be in her menstrual cycle.:heh: I enjoy the show, but in a these poor saps kind of way/look at all the naivety. I do like that the show is somewhat highlighting the problem with people's perceptions. People judging or making assumptions about Galko based on how she looks, and then breaking those perceptions, well somewhat. Personally my favorite is Ojou, nothing wrong with innocent girls, but I just happen to like characters who don't act like the word uterus is a bad word to give an example.:p Ojou is probably no more sexually experienced then Galko, she clearly just doesn't have a problem with matter of factly discussing things to do with the female body.

this is one of those shorts where one wonders why this isn't a full show.

The manga is an extended 4-koma format, "chapters" of two or three pages. It actually suits the short episode form quite well.

A couple of the early chapters of the manga have been translated but no more, sadly. I quite like it, in part because the art is done in a distinctive colour style almost like crayon.

She used a slang term for a knife, "yappa" which is both incongruous speech for an Ojou (a high-class girl) and also hints at criminality in her family.

I honestly can't say anything about Ojou's sexual experience so far. It could honestly go either way in this series, with her being the innocent sex fiend that I've heard occasionally shows up in various comic fiction or just a pure innocent who's not afraid of tampons or technical jargon. Or she could be a closet pervert who'd love to have some experience but is so sheltered that it's nothing but a distant dream. After all, the show seems to suggest an odd emphasis on the way Ojou says "blade" when saying her overprotective parents have made sure she's never had a chance to hold a "blade".
EDIT: oh, yakuza reference. Makes sense.

In any case, the only thing I think can be said with any certainty about her personal experience is that the color/style of her panties has absolutely nothing to do with it. Besides, I always figured that at least half the high school girls out there don't expect anyone but other girls to see their panties, but even if it's girls appearance is important. At the very least I've seen a ton of shows where at some girls brag on and on about their lingerie to other girls. Even if it's something that'll only be seen momentarily in the changing room, they still dress to impress.

I would like to remind viewers the three guys in the panties skit are recurring characters and have names:

Otao (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka): Somehow the spear counterpart of Otako, but he's super-shy and prefers movies to anime.
Sport-o (Daisuke Ono): the local athlete, and has a laconic speech pattern.
Charao (Takahiro Sakurai): Spear counterpart of Galko.

(and I seriously hope I never actually see a pair of high school girls betting on whether their friend's taking a leak or a dump).

As I understand it "S" and "B" in Japan mean the same as the rather prissy and childish "Number One" and "Number Two" do in the US. Then again toilet ettiquette and interest in bowel movements in Japan is... different.

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee12/nojay_photo/Odds%20and%20Sods/poo.jpg

Ladies toilets often have a noise-generator in the cubicle to mask the sound of falling water and splashing because of the embarrassment being "overheard" might cause.

In Japanese, they don't say "number one" and "number two", they say "small" and "big" respectively. Thus, big versus small translates to one or two. I've seen more than a few series say "ookii hou", which would very roughly translate as "the 'big' kind" but instead refers to #2.

Despite being a gyaru, Galko look way better without the tan.

Vanilla is indeed the scent of love.

Yes, because mecha anime are stereotypicaly popular with girls rather than boys.

Otako, you idiot, now you've done it. Thankfully it all ended well. I also predicted that Galko was simply on a sick leave.

On a side note, I can't shake the feeling that the blonde guy was designed to look like Galko if she was a guy. They are the only two who wear those yellow vests even.

Niku-ko (肉子) appeared in the very first episode and she's been in the background a few times since then. She sits immediately behind Gyaru-ko in class. There are a few other characters from the manga who I've not spotted yet, and of course we've not seen Gyaru-ko's onee-chan.

That just some slander that flat girls spread out of jealousy. And Galko proves it wrong by being quite a thinker.

Fun psychological test. Galko sounds like she'd be an amazing... shopper.

She can cook too? Galko is way too high spec! And it seems that it runs in the family as her sister also has great... qualities.

Well, I guess she won't be able to borrow that uniform anymore.

Galko-chan's stated ambition in life is to be a mother and, presumably, a wife. Her onee-chan is a bit more of a party girl than Galko is -- she doesn't appear in the manga much but there's one or two times where she's seen out bar-hopping with friends and the like.

The anime, like the manga is taking pains to not show Galko-oneechan's eyes for some reason which I find kind of strange.

That's a form of anonymity in certain media. It could mean that the author doesn't think she's important enough to warrant fully creating her character design, or it could mean that he's waiting to do it in some big reveal/dramatic moment.

So what type is Galko now according to the mall test?

Galko would do a bunch of foreplay, make the event itself delightful and just the right length of time, and then bring it to a perfect conclusion.

Once you realize that the guys were totally mentally translating her shopping actions into sexual actions, the whole thing can become funnier. And explains their reactions.

So between the Caesar salad, the little cream soup, toast, butter, Aojiru (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aojiru), banana and Caspian Sea yogurt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matzoon), there's tons of produce, but little of the fats and protein to support the siblings' gorgeous bodies.

I've seen tests like that ("here's an everyday situation, what would you do?") referenced in a couple of other animes and mangas. There's usually a sexual connection or interpretation to the answers. Oh the embarrassment!

Just watched all five episodes available in a sitting. The reactions from Galko are just gold. I can see why Otako likes to tease her so much.

The way she easily gets dragged along by the flow of conversations reminds me of one of my friends and is greatly amusing. It's not so much that she's dumb but the naivety and innocence hits high levels for this girl.

Ojou with her total lack of common sense at times does bring something of a shock value to the table and is no less amusing.

If you're talking about the "period panties" she mentioned at around 4:20, I think that's out of necessity.

Also, a Japanese 75E is the equivalent of an Angle-American 30D. I guess her cup size is an Anglo-American DD/E or a Japanese F/G. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bra_size)

I think Shadow5YA may be referring to a previous episode where one of the guys silently congratulated himself on knowing that Galko wears white panties. Of course, what she wears is probably situational. If she's wearing fancy lingerie on her upper body like in the above image, she'll probably be wearing some matching underwear on her lower body.

Well, this episode's character bios are customized to the main trio's underwear preferences. For Galko, the preference is "any underwear, as long as it's cute;" and the discussion about her brasproves it. But then as this episode also shows, she'd still wear less sightly (thick and white) panties during her period.

It's not the first time I've seen big-breasted characters in manga complaining their difficulty in buying bras. The last time I read it was Servant X Service's Lucy, who needs to order hers from catalogs.

I could write up a whole thesis on cup sizes and proper bra fitting. But this is just one of those instances when "fantasy" and reality really don't match. I don't really blame the author or the anime crew, especially when 85% of women aren't even wearing the right bra size. If Galko was a real women with the apparent size she looks to be she'd be a lot bigger then a Japanese 75E or American DD/E. Even the older woman who was talking with Galko about how she was able to get the bigger size was still wearing a bar that's to small. People often like to draw women with pushed together cleavage probably because it looks sexy, but it is in no way an accurate depiction of how a bra should fit. Bra's are supposed to do three things: support, lift AND separate. When you wear a bra there's suppose to be a space between your boobs. Remember there's two, not one.:heh: And each boob should fit completely within each cup. The front gore of a bra or the piece that separates the two cups should fit flat against a woman's breast bone. I'd link to some pictures but I don't think I'm allowed to. Still ended up writing a mini thesis, but hopefully someone found this informative.:p

On the episode itself, the girls are as adorable as ever, and Galko I understand your pain when it comes to bra shopping, I really do.

I was indeed talking about an earlier episode, where the guys were talking about correlating underwear color with purity. Charao said Galko's panties were white, which I'm sure was supposed to mean that she's "pure" and averse to sex.

But obviously that doesn't fit with her fashion sense.

She'd definitely have to shop online. Even just here in the states most lingerie places don't stock anything past a DDD/E. Some of the plus size places might have F/G/H, but I can imagine that in Japan those equivalent sizes would be even harder to find.

That scene after the ending credits was hilarious. Kuseta still enraptured by his encounter with a real woman, and Tsunnno, a gyaru wanna-be, desperately trying to catch up to Galko-chan so Kuseta would look at her the same way. Although not as clear in the anime, and as her name implies, it is quite clear in the source material that, although she often teases him, she does actually like him. I don't know why the animators didn't copy the source to make it clearer; Tsunnno's face turned bright red when Galko-chan shoved Kuseta's face into her womanhood.

Seriously, someone should teach that grade-schooler about how typical it is for girls and boys his age to make fun of their crush. And someone needs to teach Tsunno to be honest. She doesn't have to dump her personality or anything, seems like plenty of guys (especially guys in anime) will take quite a bit of tsun if they know the girl's secretly dere for them. Frankly, if you know where the behavior's coming from it can even come across as cute.

On a different note, considering Ojou's choice in underwear, I rather expected a racier swimsuit. We're talking about a girl who loves garter belts and thongs here. Maybe she just likes to go with the sexy that no one can see.

Moreover, I doubt that knowing this piece of information will have any bearing one way or another on your ability to enjoy this anime.

Although I do not disagree with your theory that this piece of information will not affect my enjoyment of the series, I strongly disagree that this sort of reveal is not a spoiler. When, as an anime-only viewer, I may have (and usually would have) preferred to be introduced to new characters by the anime itself as the story unfolds, not by someone who has read the source material and disregards the rules.

At the very least, have the common courtesy to hide spoilers behind spoiler tags so that other forum readers can decide for themselves whether or not they want to be spoiled. Granted, it may be insignificant here in this thread for the overall enjoyment of the series, but there are many anime wherein unabashed spoilers of this sort can be downright irritating, and there certainly have been plenty that I would have preferred not to read.

He spent their whole date thinking about Galko possibly having slept with someone... which makes me suspect that if his girlfriend had gone along with inept attempt at seduction, he would have been thinking of Galko while they were doing that, too. Even if I'm wrong about that last, his behavior was still kind of scummy. He definitely deserved getting hit.

Hmm... dunno. If he was 100% the counterpart to Galko he should be completely pure and virginal, become highly embarrassed at any mention of sex, and not even have a girlfriend.

Like Gal-ko, Chara-o is an actual character stereotype.

The difference is that while Galko subverts the term she is named after, Charao plays his name straight so far.

I don't blame you; the reference is obscure in fact :heh:. Kohai is voiced by Yuiko Tatsumi; last season she voiced Aya in Tantei Team KZ Jiken Note, and the latter is the most commonly (if not officially) shipped with Sunahara.

I'm still not quite sure whether Charao gave up on Galko anyway.

A little bit spolier-ish stuff about Charao's sis:She's a professional doujin-ka.

The animators did that thing of hiding her face from view in a similar manner to Galko-oneechan's appearances.

I really like this series. It's cute!

And it's kind of refreshing to have a female MC be pretty straight up about her sexuality without coming across as garish.

Also, I take a drink everytime Ojou says, 'SUGOI!'

I forget to say this.

Remember in Episode 9, when Galko blackmailed Charao into lending her his hair wax? So what did she attempt to tell Bomb-o?
Remember in Episode 1, when Galko mentioned a boy attempted to kancho her in elementary school, only got his fingers broken? That boy is Charao.

Speaking of whom, I don't remember ever hearing an older sister addressed as "aniki" before. That seems a little... odd..

Charao calls his sister "aneki" (姉貴), which is basically the female version of aniki (兄貴). The difference in pronunciation is subtle so it’s pretty easy to mishear it.

There's a direct reference to the incident later in the manga.

Chapter 64 shows Galko-chan and Chara-o together back in elementary school, with Chara-o's hand all bandaged up. There's a flashback frame of the aftermath of his attempt to "kancho" Gal-ko with him holding his hand and crying.

It sounds like Bomb-o/Bomuo keeps the hairstyle Galko made for him.

@ Episode 11:

...I'm pretty sure none of my schools never went into the history of implements used to wipe one's butt prior to the invention of toilet paper.

Oi oi, Otaku, what kind of impression is that to have of your friend? :p

Toilet paper is culture!

The thing that surprised me the most this episode is that Ojo actually live in an apartment and not a giant mansion.

There are some expensive, high class apartment suites. See Yukino's apartment in Oregairu.

Otao is a chronic anemic.

For reference, the other girl in the cafe skit is called Fujimi. I don't know what that name means, though. So, what does Galko originally think that Ao Fuyu thing is?

I can guess what is Sekigahara Alien about. But not quite The Man Who Fell in a Hole, nor Naked Eating... OK, the latter might be a naked version of Shokugeki no Soma or Koufuku Graffiti...? In any rate, since Galko's watching it, it's not supposed to be explicitly sexual.

I completely expect Chapters 15&16 to be animated next episode. This ep just forshadowed it.

The thing that surprised me the most this episode is that Ojo actually live in an apartment and not a giant mansion.

In Greater Tokyo (I think this series takes place in Northern Chiba, an area usually called Hokusou), apartments in an actual high-rise is by itself a status symbol. Americans, compare NYC's penthouses.

To quote blurb in the character section of the anime site, "The origin of her nickname... isn't because she's tall like Mt. Fuji." This sounds a bit like a suspiciously specific denial...

That will probably be a reference to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_Who_Leapt_Through_Time) which is a famous novel that got several cinematic and TV live-action and anime releases as well as a manga.

Or perhaps a reference to the movie The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) with David Bowie.

Aww, that was sweet. So... they've never actually learned each other's names?

I like how Ojou just inserted herself into the situation out of nowhere without a single care whatsoever.

Was this the last episode? That montage at the end felt last-episodeish. I want more of this.

Apparently, 12 episodes is all we get. This was an incredibly fun show to watch. Galko-chan is certainly one of the most upbeat characters in anime. Let's hope that someday there will be a season 2!

Wow, I'm incredibly sad it's over. A good origin story is a nice way to end the show. I can't believe they've been using nicknames with each other the entire time. gurrrrr, now I must know their real names. xD

I didn't expect much from this show when I first started, and I was totally blown away by how much fun I had with each episode. It's definitely one of the better shows this season even though it wasn't show with full-length episodes.

I would happily watch a second season~

I'm wondering why everyone seems to see Otako as an otaku--in the Western definition--despite she's more of a bookworm? She seems to read regular novels half of the time.

Galko is actually happy that Otako refers her as a person, rather than somebody's little sister.
It's not the first time Abe has been Galko's class teacher. That's why she warned Otako that he's a worrywart.
Abe asked Ojou to check those two out; that's why she appeared suddenly.

Will buy manga when Seven Seas releases it in November.

This was a lovely short series. The message of friendship over difference -- not an uncommon one -- is wonderfully communicated not just through the three main characters, but also in how the series humanize its ensemble cast and how our precious Galko befriends everybody. The origin story episode hammers it home by showing a completely different classroom before the Galko effect.

10/10 would awkwardly listen in on raunchy girl talk again.

I'm glad they animated these chapters where Galko, Otako and Ojou form their super sentai team.

I'm wondering why everyone seems to see Otako as an otaku--in the Western definition--despite she's more of a bookworm? She seems to read regular novels half of the time.

She loaned Galko a box-set of anime DVDs which indicate she has some interest in otaku things. As for her incessant reading she seems to be eclectic reading manga, textbooks on erotic subjects, light novels etc.

Will buy manga when Seven Seas releases it in November.

Yup, buy the books. It's one way for us pirates to pay the creators back for their efforts.

Wow, the OVA was such a treat. Such a fuckin treat. Almost a half hour's worth of Galko and co. shenanigans. This is how you do an OVA.I love that a bunch of characters get their share of screen time during summer break here instead of the core cast.

Definitely gonna get the manga.
