Can't wait for more tank madness :D
Wow, it really happens.
I don't know what they will do to top what I saw in the movie but I believe they WILL manage it.
but I really really hope they won't have to save their school (from something) again.

On the other hand, the subtitle "Final Chapter" means that they plan on closing the saga with this sequel, or at least Oarai's. Still, looking forward to what they can do with this. :)

Final chapter? Are they planning to end the franchise with this? :( While I'm happy to see more, I don't want this series to go away forever.
but I really really hope they won't have to save their school (from something) again.
Even in the movie it felt like a bit of a stretch, dramatically speaking, although they were able to give a good justification for it. Trying to bring it out a third time would really push it too far, I think. Let the girls simply participate because they enjoy it, for once.

They also announced something about new characters showing up in the new anime. Hopefully we'll get the trailer/preview soon (which I don't think it's online yet)

I wouldn't mind at least a few resolutions; as already said, the movie's tissue-paper-thin reheated plot was already a stretch.
It would be interesting to see the former freshmen leading a team, but I also don't want the production staff to feel compelled to keep topping themselves. Der Film was about as much ridiculousness as I could handle without turning it into a giant robot series. Fun, yes, long-term-credible, no.

I want the production team to try topping themselves in a more "tactical" direction. They had things pretty well balanced, at least in my mind, in the main anime and the OVA. In der Film, they were not so much on Rule of Cool as throwing everything out the window for brief moments of coolness which sometimes isn't even all that cool. In essence, it became a kind of shonen and I meant that in a bad way.

Miho's story has to end one day. The franchise may continue, but Miho has to retire into the background. The same with Oorai as the setting, the real life town has benefited but at some stage they have to move on.

This is great news. More GuP is always a good thing.
I just wonder if the final chapter part is referring to the franchise as a whole or just Miho's story. In either case, I hope the avoid the whole save the school plot line.
Shows like these arent afraid to spin off with new characters. No reason for them to stop now. Hopefully the whole drama with Actas going over budget and not getting reimbursed even tho it was a megahit isnt a big issue.
Wish we had more info on that.

Hana would be the new student president, Yukari the vice president.
from the movie world tournament is in two years, with pro league starts before that, my early guess? high school tournament and pro league, with selection to the national team plus graduation as the end of the movie, and second in command Azusa will take over the command of Oarai, (as shown in the manga.)

GuP Sotsugyou Shashin and GuP Sunshine..:D
I wonder if they'll find out just why they wanted to scrap their city-ship carrier. And then have to come up with a way to keep it going now that they've forced her to remain in service.
Mono is still present so it is still just later that same year. Or at least the image is from before the seniors' graduation the next March. Der Film was August-September.
I suppose Miho would need to graduate eventually and the Internationals are still two years away (after she leaves high school). But she still has her third year left to go, and the tank groups will loose several students when the present third years graduate.
Tanks were sort of a means to an end for some of these girls. To gain recognition for there preferred clubs in some cases (Volleyball Club in particular, but possibly also the History Club). Miho's team is more or less there for her (Mako for an erasing of her record). The Student Council is there to save the ship, but also to have fun together in their last year. The only group seems to be there purely because they want to be there are the Freshmen, who were the ones excited by tanks from the initial presentation.
The added three groups have their own motives I suppose. Automotive group because the Tiger (P) needs attention. The Gamer group....well I'm not sure why they decided to join, aside from to get stronger physically. And the Moral's group is there to keep order (and an eye on Mako).
If they make a sequel series after this Tank Carnival (is it a series, OVA, or another film?) They will need to reorganize the tank groups and add more students. They don't need to go for more ridiculous tank combat, but just more tank combat, since it is a rare thing to see at all, much less done well. We will also loss most of this year's rivals (friends from the other schools) since the team captains were all seniors I think.
Sequel: Frau und Tanku?

I like a little more closure myself and I don't think Miho is OP (in fact, I'll say the show is consistent in showing that she's a better tank commander than she's a company or worse a battalion commander, which is the entire anithesis of OP).
In the case of der Film's example, even if Miho had won in that final scene, I think the show will still have established the point of Darjeeling and Katyusha being the better tacticians. The point when they established the dominant position on top of the "stairwell" was game over as far as the tactical part of the fight is concerned. After that is Miho trying to pull a desperate win out of a losing position and it proved to be just not good enough.
Either way, however, I hope any rematch does not look like der Film. I want to see both sides' advantages in full play and given full weight. I can be fine with either conclusion but PLEASE fill essay out properly.

I knew it they will do with this, season 2 here we come.
World Tournament is going to be so much awesome. And this better be 24 episodes series or else the fanbase will RAEG.
But seriously, giving the scale of things now 24 episodes would be so much reasonable thing to do. Especially after the success that was anime and the movie, assuring founds for 24 episode format.

according to a translation of a post of someone who had seen the promo footage of the sequel, (so treat this as a rumor)
the movie story time is winter, or after the transfer of student council to 3 of the Anko team, (Japan school do this usually after fall festival, around Oct-Nov) Saori is the announcer? and also part of the student council, but this is before the third year senior graduate, (March) so they are still around, which explains the inclusion of Momo in the picture capture from the promo video,
two things from that video
1. it was something sudden and big, (so probably nothing like a scheduled tournament)
2. the ship Momo was in is a SUBMARINE,

I like a little more closure myself
You think being unable to beat Darjeeling prevents the story or Miho's character from getting closure? That doesn't make any sense. It's not like Darjeeling is her main rival or anything. She's just a side character, and the fact that Miho never beat her is just a detail. It doesn't affect the story or Miho herself in any way.
Miho likely has won the equivalent of a cultural victory. Darjeeling seems to be very much a Miho fan and likely the one who put out the call to reenforce Miho for "der Film". It sounds like something she'd do after she's been at all Miho's matches. She finds those matches much more entertaining than going against Maho (who has defeated Darjeeling).
As for the submarine, could it means the French teams are involved?

I guess she's fun going against because she's sort of unconventional. I wouldn't take that out of proportion though. Being liked by everyone is MC privilege in the end.

It does represent an "unsolved problem" for Oarai as a whole, which is by itself a non-closure. And you have to remember, all other issues in GuP are at least temporarily closed at this time, so Darjeeling is not exactly secondary here. Also remember, I don't even think Miho is OP. In fact, I think relative to her competitors, taking into full consideration the extra years she had, Miho's talents as a company or battalion commander (not leader) is below average.
Still, I'll be willing to pass that up. The main reason I want a next fight is that I really didn't like the 2nd fight, which I feel wound up selling both sides short. I want to see Darjeeling's team either a) actually learn to have a firing range of over ~30m or b) Darjeeling coming up with tactics to overcome this handicap rather than c) Oarai's firing being put through an "Offensive Assist System" and d) Oarai's allies literally leaping into the firing lane to save Darjeeling.
When Oarai sets up a defensive position, I want to see the opposition use tactics like envelopment to break it rather than the combination of an "Offensive Assist System (https://youtu.be/mbCEajdMw-I?t=7m30s)" and buffed resistance. I don't want to see the laws of physics changed in a non-normative fashion so a roadblock is not a roadblock.
Overall, I couldn't shake the sense that Oarai was deliberately nerfed by the author, which sells them short. But it also sells Darjeeling short since it deprives her of the chance to show she can win against Oarai at its full strength (and I think Darjeeling is capable of doing that and fulfilling the author's intended theme for this subject). So yes I do want a third fight and I don't think they'll be letting Darjeeling win that 3rd one, yet I think Darjeeling will look better in my eyes losing that one well than in the present form.

I disagree about that. A "problem" in a narrative sense is a conflict to drive a plot. It's not just any problem, but a problem that needs to be resolved because it would be troubling for the protagonists if it doesn't. Getting the school closed down is one such problem. Miho's personal issues with her family is too. Not beating Darjeeling is not. Nothing troubling will happen to the protagonists if they don't beat her, so they don't have to accomplish that to get closure.

How is not beating Darjeeling a problem? How does it inconvenience Ooarai in any way aside from superficial consequences?
What? Is she holding their families hostage and is going to force them to drink the worst tea imaginable unless they beat her?

I think here we are getting into "big" and "small" definitions of problem and by your standards many sports, slice of life and comedy anime will have no "problems" to close at all!
IMO, for it to qualify as an problem, it only needs to be an issue the show presented that attracted interest. A team that won twice against the protagonists, regardless of circumstances would seem to qualify. Especially if it can attract people to say " Miho still hasn't defeated Darjeeling in combat." or " I like that she can't beat her."
By the way, technically, it is possible to "close" an issue without beating it. But Girls und Panzer is a show of simplicity (if it was playing complicated, KMM would have won), and the "win after loss" solution is still the most conventional, easiest closure.
But really, I have a question. Are we really quibbling over how big a problem has to be to qualify as worthy of closure, or do you two have some real reasons you either want Darjeeling to win a third match or to leave this issue in its present state?

GuP is not a conventional sport anime. In a typical sport anime, the main point of the show is to win competitions. GuP's not like that. Both the tv show and movie stablish actual conflicts to drive the narrative (like stopping the school from closing down), so winning the competition becomes a means to an end, not the goal itself.
In that kind of narrative, not beating a particular opponent is irrelevant. What's important is that the protagonists achieve their actual goal. That's all the story needs to get closure.
Also, do we even know that Darjeeling herself will be competing in the second season? She might be in her third year, in which case she will probably step down from the team.

See the inspiring, massively-praised and successful Hikaru no Go, among others. Also, it’s not just complicated series who did that. A simple sport anime for kids like Ganbare, Kickers! did that too, and there’s nothing wrong with that coz some sport series prefer to focus on the MC’s growth as a goal rather than beating the enemy/rival. So it was never a problem, narrative-wise.

I just couldn't resist when it comes to shouting happiness at the news. :D :D :D
Since this season points to the third and last high school year, I would like to see Miho finally be able to find the gap in that Churchill's armor in a test match before those new opponents are thrown into the mix. Hopefully, we'll see Maple making their anime debut.
Just as someone mentioned before, I would like to see 1st-years coming through and show us they are ready to hold the torch high after the passing. After all the publicity Ooarai earned with that special match in Der Film, there has to be an influx of good candidates who want to join the reigning champions and/or express themselves in sensha-do as much as Miho does.
In any case, I can't wait!

In Para 3 of the post you quoted, I specifically mentioned closure does not necessarily mean "beating it" (victory). I hadn't watched Ganbare, but I did watch Hikaru and at least two other anime whose names I've forgotten where the "underdog protagonist" did not win. I even said in other posts that I would be OK as long as it was actually quality this time.
However, it is still the more complex of two options to write and in my (limited) experience requires preconditions like the target being so far ahead that it is really indefensible (even by the standards of such anime) for the protagonist to grow to beat them in the allocated time. In HnG, Akira had been working all his life on Go and Hikaru just started for a year or two. Similarly, the other two anime's "targets" were very strong teams and the Wiki suggests Ganbare is in that mold - it also seems the protagonist team in Ganbare made it the following year (the real closure was just "cut off" by the anime's limited run).
That's a road NOT taken with Darjeeling and St. Glorianna. St. Glorianna is depicted as calmer, but in terms of "player skill" not massively superior.

The part that the anime didn't adapt is when Kickers fought Harry's team in a dirty play. Uesugi (Red Devils' captain/goalkeeper) even supported Kickers so that they can win against Harry.
And no, as depicted in the later part of the series and the climactic match in the anime, Red Devils is not that far from Kickers' reach that it's impossible or unthinkable for them to win. It was a close match, but Kickers still can't defeat Red Devils. But that's not a problem coz the series is focusing on the MC-team's growth and development. And St. Glorianna is closer to Red Devils than you think.
IIRC in Little Army 2 Oorai also got trounced by Continuation School

Well, I'm just reading off the Wiki text.
翔の熱意もあってキッカーズは強豪・南陽SCと練習試合を行うことになり、ゴールキーパー・上杉光を擁する 南陽を相手に、後半だけなら1-0で勝つものの、試合自体は1-12の大差で敗れる。
Based on it, in the first match in the first year, Kickers got creamed by 南陽SC (since it has Uesugi in it, I think that's what became "Red Devils" in English) 1-12.
決勝の相手は初戦で西山SSSを下した南陽SCで、一進一退の攻防を続けるものの、2-3のスコアでキッカーズが敗れ、全国大会出場を逃す。
They lost 2-3 in the finals again.
本郷が卒業し、新キャプテンの健太の下で活動を始めた新生キッカーズ...決勝の相手は準決勝で南陽SCを 大差で下した西山SSSとなるが
The next year (since a senior person graduated), the finals was against a "西山SSS" (南陽SC apparently got rolled) and
西山が優勢に進めるが、後半に入って翔の得点でキッカーズが勝ち越し、全国大会出場を決めるの だった。
Kickers won and advanced to the nationals. So you are right Kickers never won directly against 南陽SC/Red Devils but it is one of those "indirect win" things where you beat the thing (like KMM) that beat your rival .
And no, as depicted in the later part of the series and the climactic match in the anime, Red Devils is not that far from Kickers' reach that it's impossible or unthinkable for them to win.
I believe that, but that's not the same thing I'm talking about. Ultimately, I can't comment on how close St G is to 南陽SC/Red Devils (b/c I hadn't read or watched it). But to recreate St G, RD would have won more like 5-4 in the first match and not shown to be too dangerous.
I do understand that it is possible to "focus on the Mc-team's growth", but IMO it is still harder to culminate right with a "losing ending" because when you lose, you have to work harder to define exactly what they did manage to accomplish. While with a win, what they accomplished is self-apparent.
IIRC in Little Army 2 Oorai also got trounced by Continuation School
Yeah, apparently, Oarai had "mechanical trouble". From the flow of events, one cannot help but speculate that LA2 was meant to be 4 books long, was then chopped to three and thus both teams lost their matches so they can bump into one another quickly in a "revival match".
And Pravda could easilly crush Ooorai when they cornered them if Katyusha didn't catch Villain Ball with all this cease-fire deal
Oh, I don't disagree with that, but IMO Pravda is a bit far from our discussion at hand. This in essence is arguing at a technical level that Oarai can lose to any of the bigs, and I don't doubt that. However, today I'm looking more at "literary" matters.

I'm hoping this will be a TV series spanning 24-26 episodes, rather than a movie. The latter takes forever to become accessible.
So it's finally happening, and it's sad to see it end eventually.
So it could either be a series or a movie, I'm hoping for a TV series.
Now the question is, can this final chapter would be able to top the movie?
It insanity over the topness? Probably not.
In realistic tank battling? I hope so.
I'd like a nice looking fight that is not so seemingly one sided in either numbers or quality of tanks. Sure we need Miho to come up with a plan, or the other teams to have a shining moment, but it also be nice to see someone using Miho's tactics against her, and force her to either counter in kind, or do something different (even lose because someone used her style against her).
It is interesting how the perceptions of certain characters has changed over time. Anchovy was introduced in the manga as quite angry and mean, but now she's quite the favorite. Maho is nowhere near as brutal as she looks, but also shows a protective side for family. I think Darjeeling was always a favorite. But even the perception of the student council is vastly different now than near the start of the show. They also went from the flag tank that couldn't hit anything to the massive troll team, with them being involved with taking out both the Maus and the Karl in weird and dangerous ways.

To be fair, with Anchovy, it's because they rolled over the exact section in the manga, but I do agree we are seeing more sides off Maho and Darjeeling (personally, it's the Drama CD Darjeelings that are the most endearing).
I'm hoping this will be a TV series spanning 24-26 episodes, rather than a movie. The latter takes forever to become accessible.
I'll also prefer a TV-series, which allows more time for some character development. Further, a TV-series will have less $/minute budgeted. Experience has shown that when that staff has less $/minute, they'll focus on tactics rather than tankobatics, which makes it a much more enjoyable and balanced experience.

Quite so :) Mind you, when I say TV series (I can't say I speak for anyone else for sure), I'd like a two-cour season. Twelve episodes is fine and all for testing the waters, but the community clearly shows there's a strong market for this show. If that happens, I'll be very happy. Plus, a TV series would let us stream episodes: no more of this "waiting for an indeterminate period of time to watch it" business.

I notice they actually bothered to make new uniforms, which they didn't bother doing for the movie (except for ONE particular cut which only highlights the economy-of-force), so there is reason to believe it'll be a series.
that is not some newly made panzer uniform, that is call high school winter uniform, the whole GuP time frame is only from April to August (TV) and September (movie), when they wears their summer uniform plus their panzer uniform, this final chapter would be the immediate school winter quarter timeframe after the tournament with the university team, for comparison, check Hibiki no Euphonium and their two sets of uniform.
further, the supposed big happening, the things that "shocks" Oarai, the extra news sheet people handing out? it is to be a ONE DAY trip, to be done by armor train, (notice the "infinite track works" poster behind the new student president Hana?) so whatever the event is, it would take one day, and I highly doubt you can stretch a one day event into a TV season.

24 episodes > 12 episodes > OVA series > single OVA >> movie
The wait for the last movie was excruciating, so if it came down to it, I'll take an OVA running an hour over a movie, hence the ordering ;)
Something that shakes them to the core as a start and premise for a series might work. But would it be something like the city-ship is actually starting to break down? They've managed to keep her form the boneyards, but at what cost? Why was the ship to be decommissioned in the first place? Is she really, just that old and needs to be decommissioned or some very expensive refits in order to keep serving as a school?
I know a bunch of 1950s era schools that were taken out by the state due to issues they've have trying to rebuild them for either modern technology, or wear, or environmental issues (asbestos).

Issues with their school ship would turn the continuation into Girls und Panzer: Mighty Ships edition. Fun that might be, I don't think it's likely they'll use the school ship as a catalyst a third time. I'm personally hoping it deals more with the girls' future endeavours with Panzerfahren and whether or not they're striving for competition at a professional or international level.

I didn't say it is a panzer uniform, did I. I said they made "new uniforms", which as you say is the winter one.
I used to think that long-sleeved thing we see them wear was their summer uniform too. However, in der Film about 47-50 seconds in, there is one cut where we actually see short-sleeved Oarai uniforms. When I noticed it I started to chuckle b/c while I can understand not making a summer uniform altogether to save design costs, they shoudn't be reminding us of this lack :heh:
Well, so they are making a new uniform, or at least a winter jacket they can throw over their regular uniform, which is more than what der Film got, so I'm betting series.

It won't be because of 3 logic reasons:
1. They made a stage for world tournament game in anime, OVA's, manga and now movie.
2. They earned a lot o money ( as in, the biggest grossing anime movie ever ).
3. If they decide to do an OVA instead of full length TV series and leave it at that... they can pretty much close the company as fan-base would be so outraged that it would hurt their reputation in the end.
So I highly doubt that this will be anything but series about world tournament.

I believe those claims stem from this one screenshot in reference to the newspaper visible:
https://infinitemirai.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/vlcsnap-00003.png
The resolution might not be high enough to easily discern what's going on, but that's what is being referred to. With that being said, there's not a chance that this is going to be a one-episode continuation. I imagine that Hata is missing the bigger picture: the elements shown in the trailer is merely a short glimpse as to what's happening, a single event in a larger narrative. A one day event, if true, could be the disruption that drives the events in the continuation.
Further to this, it's as Brother Coa states: from a financial perspective, it makes no sense to only do an OVA given the financial success and warm reception Girls und Panzer has generated. Fans are going to look forwards to a continuation, and a TV series will easily generate more money than a single OVA. Of course, if there is substantial evidence showing this to not be true, I would be quite happy to take a look. In fact, I'll eat my hat if we wind up with only an OVA.
Finally, as for the armoured train, looks like someone is experiencing some Battlefield 1 beta withdrawal :p

2. They earned a lot o money ( as in, the biggest grossing anime movie ever ).
No they didn't. I mean, the movie was a success and sold extremely well, but the company spent even more in production. In fact, they apparently couldn't break even despite the movie being a hit.

Pretty sure that the GuP production committee earned the profits from the movie's ticket sales and home video release. If not, they wouldn't have greenlit the "Final Chapter". The one who lost money was Studio Actas since they went over the allotted budget by the production committee to make the movie. They didn't got the profits for the movie's success because they were not in production committee.
2.2 billion yen is quite a lot.

That's so far in the future it won't even be funny. If they adopt a Gundam Unicorn release schedule and then encounter delays in production, Half-Life 3 will come out, and we'll put man on Mars twice, before this finishes. I can't say I'm a fan of the whole "in theatres first" methodology.

A very Actas-friendly schedule. Gives them ample time to work out the important details and hopefully not have to rush anything. With how Actas had to delay the airing of Regalia by a whole two months and how Long Riders is plagued with weekly delays and poorly rushed animation, I'm glad they aren't shoveling this out as a Winter 2017 TV anime right on the feet of Regalia and Long Riders because that would definitely put a strain on the production and deliver an inferior product.
The main issue is, of course, the wait. But as a GuP fan, I'm quite used to waiting for it now. Perfectionism is Mizushima's middle name, let him work his magic.

I'd rather have this kind of release since given Actas' current problem with delays and low quality art/animation experienced by Regalia and Long Riders!, at least high quality will be maintained for GuP final chapter.

So like Hellsing Ultimate...
And that means 2 OVA's per year...
Why was it so hard to do 26 episode anime series? K-ON did it and they did just fine...
Bigger budget and more time to animate tank battles is the likely issue.

Actas have problems doing two 1-cour series this year without schedule slips and they had similar problems with GuP. Making it 6 OVAs instead of a TV series is actually logical solution.

6x40 is about the same amount of anime as 12x20, you know... actually a bit longer because you only have the OP and ED 6 times instead of 12 in those minutes. We just didn't get 2-cours, that's all.
They likely also get a larger budget.

I just hope they will be able to resolve the story in 12 episode time-slot they have. I would hate for GuP to suffer the fate of Mass Effect.

Damm right it is. I hope it turns out good.
The winter end of a series. so, MEXT decides to close the school down anyway at the end of the school year? Or does the carrier's hull start to give out? Or will they go some other route (maybe some world building. Like why are there huge school carriers to begin with and why do there seem to be a lot of abandoned areas for the girls to have tank battles in across Japan?) Training girls to be tank drivers at an early age as a school activity and a major international sport (enough were there are lots of tank themed items around the country, even if one is that abandoned theme park) would seem like there should be something more to this.
Any ideas, since we have little to go on right now aside that this is not the Internationals, since those are still a few years away, and this is still Miho's second year as they are preparing for a new student council and its winter.

From what I gather reading around, Final Chapter will not involve Ōarai closing or MEXT backing down on their word. Also, it looks like Hana, Saori and Yukari are a part of the student council (https://twitter.com/garupan/status/880741724250808320) in Final Chapter. Saori is in a secretary role, probably in Momo's role, while Hana has become the president, in place of Anzu. While not shown, I'm betting that Yukari is the president.

Effectively another 12-episode season, and with how the first season's battles were effectively two episodes each anyway, this should work out perfectly!
Interesting to see they've already picked the new student council members. I had thought that the winter setting would make for a convenient excuse to ignore that the seniors are leaving at the end of the year (March), but I guess they'll touch on that anyway.
As long as we get a happy, heartwarming ending as is always expected from the series, I'll be happy with whatever we get.

The turn-based approach of Valkyria Chronicles would work very nicely with the idea of teamwork, especially since it would force players to strategically move their assets and utilise them smartly to engage an enemy. Having said that, I'm personally okay with a full-on shooter: curious to see if my personal approaches are enough to crush the Nishizumi style (especially if the game allows for loadouts to be modified).

Assuming I've got equipment parity but start out numerically inferior, I would ambush my enemy and frustrate them with long-range manoeuvres to even the numbers out. In most shooters, I also love CQC, so once their numbers are thinned, I will pound them senseless with a combination of patience and swiftness. I want to see the P. 1000 Ratte in the new movies. Even though it was never actually built, it was designed and approved by Hitler himself, so it is legit.
It's two main cannons are the size of a large battleship cannon, while it's secondary cannon is the same one used on the Maus. Its armor would have been impenetrable, not even a direct hit from a Maus can dent it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtblYGKCaRs
In theory, the main battery was a battleship turret. Gneisenau's to be specific. They removed her three triple 11" turrets and replace them with twin 15" turrets. The center barrel would be removed on the Ratte, probably to give more room for shell handling.

Was Saori in a gunner's position there? Wonder what necessitated that.
Perhaps. If so its not in a German tank (wrong side of the gun).
It may just be a re-imaging of the hull MG position, manned by the radio operator, that we would always see in the TV series OP sequence.
Will be a serious match with something tangible on the line or will it be a more casual practice/exhibition match?
Will it be Flag or Elimination?
So far the only team we've seen Oorai face who they could arguably have beaten in the elimination format is Anzio. The whole underdogs with a fraction of the numbers and tank quality of the enemy team overcoming adversity to snatch a close win from the jaws of defeat only works if it's a Flag match.
Is this just the next year's tournament? In the movie though the Mext guy said they'd be switching over to elimination for the pro leagues/WT and that they need to get used to that as the standard format and whatnot so is BC Freedom going to be another Anzio-eque team with greater numbers but lackluster equipment?
I do understand that as was first mentioned as early as the first episode, again purely through Momo's dialogue, the news that Panzerfahren World Cup/Tournament would be taking place in Japan in a few years could easily just be a piece of world building and nothing more with the creators (especially at the time) never actually planning to follow the story that far into the future.
So far Oorai has not been shown to be a team that wouldn't get convincingly defeated when facing schools that bring the full might of their repertoire to bear. This is strongly evidenced by every main tournament match besides Anzio. Suanders, Pravda, and Black Forest would all have crushed them had those matches been elimination.
There must be a larger story at work here. Surely it'll be something more complex than I don't know BC Freedom just challenges them to a match with nothing but Oorai's pride on the line because they're that years champions/they heard they (along with help from about 5 others schools) beat a University All Stars team or something.
I mean BC Freedom is one of many schools we never got to see that practice Panzerfahren, but while I'll still watch and hopefully enjoy more mainline GuP I'd like a good reason as to why were seeing those other schools in action beyond the arbitrary reasons I came up with. It's hard to follow up their school ship is at stake to it just being a sport with nothing on the line besides the gratification of victory and the sting of defeat that comes with any serious competitive commitment and not have it feel lacking by comparison.

From everything I've seen so far, the first episode at least seems headed for being more an Anzio than der Film. It actually is better that way IMO because the production team's tactical talent is insufficient to really handle having the weaker team in an unbalanced match win in a way that leaves the strong team looking pretty good, and typically the sacrifice is the strong team's tactical competence.
Frankly, der FIlm was really quite over the top in the stakes department anyway. Rather than try to top it, it's probably better to keep things lighthearted.
The only over the top situation that is left is that their City-Ship takes damage and is in danger of sinking unless they can come up with the funds to repair the ship (the ship was due to be scrapped for some reason before).
BC Freedom's City-Ship is a submarine if I recall correctly.
Infinite Zenith
2017-11-22, 20:28
Probably for not meeting naval codes and regulations. Maybe the new goal is to win a tournament and get a new ship.
The franchise or to be more specific the sport of Senshado/Panzerfahren has little to work with when depicting actual matches. Case in point, Der Film made numerous references to match events that happened during the tournament. Self references that early on in a franchise's life span scream of a shallow idea pool.
There are only so many different scenarios to work with when writing up the play by play of tank on tank combat. That is to say making each match feel unique becomes increasingly more challenging the more they make.
So while they're not yet scrapping the bottom of the barrel for ideas (plenty of real world WW2 and older tanks have yet to be featured in any capacity for starters) the franchise's popularity/money making potential is unfortunately for greater than its practical long term potential as long as it remains true to its roots as purely tanks against tanks with an effort to make each match worthwhile.
So I really do hope this Finale OVA series truly is the end. I don't want to see mainline entries in the franchise decay into mediocrity because they ran out of good worthwhile ideas for match scenario, but kept going because it's a money maker.
BC Freedom's City-Ship is a submarine if I recall correctly.
Actually, Maginot High School has a submarine as a schoolship and not BC Freedom.

With recent news of Bandai owning Actas because of the GuP property, I don't see it ending yet after Das Finale though it might end the Miho/Oarai story.
Ah, the other French school. Of course.
The story could always pick back up with the International Tournament they keep mentioning happening in a few years. Miho would be just entering college, and only her starting group's freshmen would still be in high school.
What is this? :heh:

If all 6 films are the same length, then the final series is 12 TV episodes long. They could have just made it a TV season but I guess they wanted to make as many money as possible by releasing it on theaters.
Looking at the promo art, assuming what's depicted isn't unrelated to the first OVA, it'll be a Flag Match with the Hetzer as Oorai's flag tank.

Well, it's not the first time that it happened. Girls und Panzer Der Film was also finished 4 days before the premiere of the film on November 21, 2015, according to Tsutomu Mizushima's tweet as well. (https://twitter.com/tsuki_akari/status/666470308199591936) Besides, this is better than it being delayed like with what Actas had been doing with their last couple of anime. At least, he got to celebrate his birthday today(December 6) without anything to worry about(except for the work on the other 5 parts of Das Finale).
And remember that the TV show had two recap episodes thanks to delays in production as well. :)

But ummm, isn't that French tank outside the rules? Only a wooden mockup was built before the war ended. The first prototype wasn't built until 1946, and they didn't go into production until 1949 due to turret construction delays....fitted to 1946 hulls.

According to Crunchroll, first episode of GuP: das Finale debuted 4th with 145 million yen. So, is there anyone, who saw it and is able to share their impressions?
Does the MkIV at least have the anime speed boost most of the tanks get? Even with plot armor I can't see it being very useful.

Yes. Considering the very limited showing of the movie (only 4 theaters in the whole of Tokyo), that figure is quite impressive. All schedules are fully packed. The Movie actually started showing in some theaters at Dec. 8 at 11 P.M. it ran through the night and into the next day. I was only able to get a seat at the 11:20 PM showing on the next day at Dec. 9. When I watched again on Monday Matinee the movie is still packed.

Yes, by GuP physics it was able to keep up with the other tanks when they're on the move.

"BC" is BC Freedom, the French school being featured in Final Chapter.
BC Freedom, which would essentially be the bipolar mid-1941 French school....BC = Vichy, Freedom = Free France....together on one city-ship. That has all the signs of disaster all over it.

It ends with BC team heading to a snow covered mountain. I pointed out in my review that I'm quite disappointed with the film. It's not because the movie itself is bad, in fact it's very entertaining, It's because of that to be continued open ended part. The action is really gearing up at end, very exciting, but we have to wait for part 2 to see how they beat BC freedom, and as you can see in the film proves themselves to be quite a formidable opponent.

So Das Finale episode 1 was GREAT! Though I feel the tank combat parts were too short and not quite as arresting as previous battles, everything from the characters to the various minutinae was on point (like Yukari, why are you carrying a grenade on you for such a situation? :twitch: ). The animations especially though, not even Der Film prioritized character animation that well or that fluidly, especially in combination with the glorious cinematography we've come to expect from the series.
The first part with the dark underbelly of the ship was especially fun, with Shark Team being a very fun addition to the team. That impromptu duel was a nice way to show off the assorted strengths of Ankou Team, both in expected and unexpected ways (Hana and Miho in particular are  ). I actually like it better than the second part with the tank battle, since the battle really only came down to one decisive moment, and we needed to see the next episode to conclude it.

If you mean me, it's better to call me a "casualty" or "trauma victim" of said movie. By the time the fires all died out, GuP had turned to me from "something special" into more of a "OK, I'll watch it" level.
Anyway, what CAN I say about it. It was amusing, and yes, it is more up my alley than the movie. The conflict, for one, is actually proportionately sized, which is better than trying to hype things up too much.
The competition between Anglerfish and the would-be Shark Team was amusing. I frowned when they reverse imported that fan-idea of Miho being really good at martial arts due to shell-dodging. It is completely inconsistent with the relatively realistic and low-key portrayal of things that I think was one of the draws of the original series. But then, wacky and throwing out realism worked for them (commercially) in der Film, so I wasn't too shocked to see something like this.
The final escape was clever, but gawd did they have to force themselves into making that mistake to set it up. They basically all crammed themselves onto the bridge to get shot at. You don't have to have any military knowledge to at least suspect you don't cross bridges that way in a combat situation...
Used to be, I would not accept such a passage in a FanFic (in fact, I'm pretty sure even amateur FanFics I've seen managed to avoid this level of contrived stupidity), but now I can't even get angry or protest anymore... I was kind of "Oh, really (flat)" and when they finally got out "Oh, that was kind of clever..."
Times have changed. :(

There's no indicator that was a smoke grenade (stick grenades would've had a white marking and relief texture) [1] (https://infinitemirai.wordpress.com/2018/03/25/girls-und-panzer-das-finale-part-one-review-and-reflection/), and using a live grenade as a melee weapon wouldn't fly anyways, since the risk of accidental detonation is there. The moment was done for the narrative's sake (to show the risk of the girls being back into a corner), so I'm not too bothered.

I finally got to see this long episode and then read the review on Random Curiosity. I really enjoyed it. That new crew of pirates brought quite a breath of fresh air in quite an already diverse Oarai team.
As for the choice of the march song for BC Freedom, it is not bad. However, I agree with the reviewer on Random Curiosity that using "Do You hear the People Sing?" from Les Misérables would have perhaps been a better choice. Why? Well, we know that the students there are quite good at staging popular uprisings, so "À la Volonté du Peuple" (The official title of the original French song) could have been used as a uniting chant for the various factions of BC Freedom school against a common opponent.
I listened to both the English and French versions of the song in question, and the chorus alone is giving me chills.

I believe its to be more of prop, like most of the stuff she had in her room, that Yukari will use more for bludgeoning. But the idea that's real, even for a moment in the movie is hilariously priceless.:D

That works. On top of that, I think Yukari could also try to pull the old the "broomsticks for Browning M2s" trick and scare the Donozoko patrons into backing down, too :p
I finally got to see this long episode and then read the review on Random Curiosity. I really enjoyed it. That new crew of pirates brought quite a breath of fresh air in quite an already diverse Oarai team.

In case anyone were wondering, my review is superior to Random Curiosity's in every way (https://infinitemirai.wordpress.com/2018/03/25/girls-und-panzer-das-finale-part-one-review-and-reflection/). Unlike their writers, I actually know my tanks, and I don't fixate on history. You could at least do me the courtesy of reading my review and giving me a comment.

It really depends on when the next part will be released. If it comes out next year, they might not need to replace her. And whether Katyusha or Hoshino will even have speaking lines in Part 2.

Really? June 2019? If they’re going to do that, at least release the BDs at the same time as the theatrical screenings. :eyebrow:
I guess they are not worried about losing fanbase interest with such a long delay between the movies.

Having an extra data point means that if we suppose there are 1.5 years as the gap between episodes, the theatrical screenings would be estimated as:
Episode 3: December 2020
Episode 4: June 2022
Episode 5: December 2023
Episode 6: June 2025
Further, if we let the home releases be set three months after the theatrical screenings, as with part one:
Episode 3: March 2021
Episode 4: September 2022
Episode 5: March 2024
Episode 6: September 2025
For those who do not intend to fly to Japan each and every time for the theatrical screenings, the second list's dates will likely be more relevant, and from those numbers, it looks like we'll be wrapping up Das Finale seven years from now. Seven.
It will be a long ride. But this isn't Hellsing...it shouldn't take quite that long.

Oh, for crying out loud.!!!(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
I hope they would make it a much longer movie. Looks like the Vikings appeared, so I guess they finished up their match with BC F then moved on to the next round.
I don't think I can live that long.....
if they show it in June(ep2), at least show a second in December(ep3) in the same year(not as shown by Infinite Zenith estimate).
but at least I know when to watch B/R version when it comes out....maybe

I am hoping that I am wrong.
Dammit! We have to wait a year before the nexxt OVA comes out. Its a long wait. But its a good thing there are other shows that'll keep me busy.

I think you mean nine months, provided they continue to release BDs three months after the theatrical screenings.

It's just disgraceful that they have to make us wait for that long. At the same time, don't they realize that voice actresses have other roles to attend to? Just make this thing done already, especially with all the money they gained in the last few years!

The fact that the releases are spaced out means that the VA's have more time to take other jobs in limbo. It's not like VA's are beholden to a single production like a hostage while they wait for the production to complete.
Also, there's really nothing disgraceful about this: we know that ACTAS isn't a very large studio, and we know that they're giving this particular franchise as much love and attention as they need. Considering that the last time they had to delay GuP's final two episodes by several weeks just to deliver it to us, at the very least this time they tell us ahead of time that they're releasing the episodes in a staggered manner, that way any delays are expected rather than unpleasant surprises.
New key visual and 2 new PVs for Das Finale Part 2 is now out!

As nice as those look (and boy, do they look NICE), the release date means nothing for those who aren’t in Japan or willing to drop a few thousand to fly there for the second part.
So what's the role of the other school's tanks groups in this one?

I can't make out who are Pravda are fighting in the snow. They seem, to me, have a Panzer 3 and a Tiger 1 but they don't seem to be Kuromorimine.

Seems like I picked... not that good of a time to catch up with GuP, but well, no way around it.
Best part of episode 1 was the journey to the bowels of the school, from the pirate crew, to Yukari pulling a grenade to witnessing the true power of the Nishizumi school, it was a riot.
French crew is cool and I do appreciate them turning Yukari's spionage to their advantage, as it made for a decent twist. Katyusha is a much better song, though.
Still not sure if I want to see Momo intentionally getting a hit by the end of this, though, fitting as it would be. Perhaps having to actually command would be a better way to do it, even if she's only second worst to the Chiha Tai in that regard.
Should start hearing stuff on this soon, I would think.
