View Full Version : Licensed Ryuuou no Oshigoto! [LN]
http://https://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/images/7/78/Ryuoh_no_Oshigoto%21_v01_cover.jpg
"Ryuuou No Oshigoto!" is a LN series written by Shirow Shiratori ("Nourin" author) and illustrated by Shirabi. As you know this series took the #1 Spot in "Kono Light Novel Ga Sugoi!" 2017. And, despite the backlash and reactions it got from this taking the top spot, lemme tell you about it.
The story is about a teenage boy who happens to be a shogi master. One day, a nine-year-old girl turns up at his house, announcing that she will take him as her master. From there, all kinds of wacky hijinks ensue.
This series is actually quite enjoyable, it overall has to do with the sport shogi. It follows Yaichi Kuzu, a shogi player who gets disciplined by a 9 year old girl named Ai to get better at becoming a shogii champion. And I can see why this is popular from GA Bunko, took the #1 spot in "Kono Light Novel"', and is popular in Japan. The reason why is because of the fundamental aspects and comedy, as well as charm this series has. IT MAKE SHOGI A FUN SPORT.
I would not tag the series as "lolicon", since the MC is not one...

Why doesn't the loli become a shogi master herself? Because she's a girl?
Why doesn't the loli become a shogi master herself? Because she's a girl?
Because she's a girl? I don't get what you're trying to say. Aoi starts as a (vert talented) novice, so no. Maybe that will be the endgame for this series, who knows.

^ From the start approaching a major sport without any studies nor training snd making it to the top is way too unrealistic. What's natural is to study it under someone; everyone does.
---- BTW, I browsed this a little and I liked it quite a lot, it has this 'growing out of your problems' subtext like several other interesting sport series (like Sangatsu no Lion); at least what was going on was interesting to me.
Additionally the novel doesn't drown in the supposed loli appeal nor romcom cliches, something which prevents me from touching several titles (like roukyubu).
..... Now if only Shirayuki had long hair and wore yukionna kimonos all the time......

You don't understand. If the 9-year old girl is good enough to coach someone else, she's good enough to be a pro shogi player on her own. Why must she be reduced to a supporting character? The series should be about her instead.
Well, you can always hope for some side story with her being the MC or something.
And that lolicon tag's still there.
I took the lolicon tag off and changed it.

She is not a coach. She picked up the game just by watching a few of the protag's games and went to seek him as her master. The protag is her mentor not the other way round. What Xftg123 meant by discipline is not related to coaching :heh:
She is very talented though. The protag's senior (anedeshi) who also happens to be younger than the protag and also very skilled sees the 9-year old as a love rival.
It may be a little unrealistic in terms of ages of achievements but still not that far off from real ages, where there have been real world youngest title winners (including Ryu-oh title) who were younger than 20.

hmm interesting talk here just my 2cents:, a serie to be "lolicon" don't means which the mc must be one or start as one, many series which have a male mc he is not a lolicon at the beginner but he ending turning in one by being constantly forced into the lolis as they keep appearing and ending in lewd situations with the mc, then after some chapters/volumes he ending turning in one after finally give up in resist, this means which just because he is not one on the beginner or not just into young girls which the serie can't be a lolicon, lolicon series where about underaged girls and many cases in being put in romance/ecchi stuffs, that is what make a lolicon serie, like fate ilyia which is a lolicon serie, since you don't really have a male mc but we see how things are focused on the "young girls" with all the ecchi and fanervice.
Book Walker has licensed the novel series for English digital publication under the working title "The Ryuo’s Work is Never Done!". [Source (https://global.bookwalker.jp/info-news_20170712/)] The thread prefix has been updated and all the rules regarding licensed novels are now in effect.

This light novel is amazing!!
I loved every moment of reading this ... except the "main heroine"'s character and story, which are absolutely garbage. Every volume is an emotional roller coaster ride that is a huge blast to read through (well except volume 1, which is focused on the cover girl that I abhor).
From the internal struggle, the tears, the euphoric rush, the hemorrhaging pressure, the difference in talent causing lack of esteem and doubt, the love for this game, the hope for this game, the wish to want to know you didn't throw away your life away for nothing because of this game, the need to just have one person acknowledge you, the power to break your personal barrier etc. etc. etc. all the way to author's own real life story, every single event is carefully planned out and delightfully presented. Who knew that shogi players can be so BAMF!
The characters are all great (except one, guess who), with Reika, Eisei Meijin, Meijin, and Yashiyajin Ai being the best written of the bunch. Reika and Ai's story brought me to tears, and the Meijins are just too godly (pun fully intended).
Personally, I hugely empathize with Ginko Sora in particular and she is definitely my favorite (and the author's, and the author's fellow friends/writers). Given the story was supposed to end at volume 5 originally, I am not sure how I feel about Ginko being featured most prominently in volume 6 (certainly won't be reached in the anime). No matter though, I am still going to cheer her on no matter what. Also would be interesting to see how 姉弟子 is going to be translated, as I don't think such concept exist in English?
Either way, I used to joke that GA shill the hell out of this series with KonoRano, but now I think the story's ranking is very well deserved (hence the reason for my choice of words at the beginning of this "review").

I think there is something wrong in the first post :heh:.
^^Anime is here and the sub just says "Sis" lol~ So misleading~
Btw, requesting spoilers
1. Will there be any romance?
2. Is loli the main heroine, a 2nd protagonist, or just partner character (Like Sasara in Countrouble)?

1. Depends on your definition of romance. So far she is and Mc are semi-engaged for marriage.
2. Ai? She is the main heroine.

How skilled is the MC compared to all the other Shogi masters? From the synopsis it sounded like he was the strongest shogi player in the world but that doesnt seem to be the case. Whos better than him?

Could we get some spoilers on what the story has been up to? If not it would be cool to see the illustrations from the other volumes, the anime, for being promoted as "loli bait", has some charm to it and isnt putting the shogi aspect in the backburner, which is a plus

I don't think she's a joke character. I say she got the 2nd biggest progression after Yaichi. If anything, she has the most room to grow so far still.

The third strongest character (Souta) in the novel thinks Yaichi revolutionizes playing Shogi. If I have to rank them, Yaichi is probably 2 or 3rd strongest in the novel.

I was told volumes 1-5 are summarized elsewhere.
Volume 6 introduces a Souta and focuses on Ginko. Ginko barely won against Souta in the main story match because he fucked up and exposed himself when Ginko has all but given up. Of course the lolis, especially Ai#2, are slowly ranking up as well. Yaichi continues his winning streak since beating Meijin and is crazy strong after overcoming that giant hurdle.
Ginko considers herself an earthling, while the top tier shogi players are "shogians" that are from another planet. She just wants to be close to Yaichi and doesn't care if she crashes and burns while trying to reach him. Souta destroyed her pride with such raw display of talent. Souta plays computer Shogi a lot so his thinking/strategy is almost machine like.
Volume 7 is an extremely poignant volume because the theme is family. A lot of the old geezers are retiring because they find themselves no match for the new generation. Meanwhile, Yaichi loses an old veteran that is theoretically weaker than him for that person's retirement match, but still manages to ranking up overall due to previous performance. He went straight to Ginko to cry afterward, which soothes Ginko because he does not seem as out of reach now. Yaichi's master Kiyotaki ended up dropping in rank despite an extremely well game played against Yaichi's cape-wearing rival (Ayumu) from volume 1 (situation is complete opposite of Yaichi), but he decided not to retire yet because of his family. Conclusion to this match was definitely the most touching scene so far in the series. I cried reading this part, as well as did everyone present including Keika, Ai, Ginko, and Yaichi. Everyone understood how significant the down-ranking was, and how much effort Kiyotaki exhausted just to maintain his rank, which he ultimately failed.
The parts where the Kiyotaki contemplates on his success so far, his daughter being born, his daughter help raising his disciple, how he has risen to the top but never reached Meijin status, the succeeding crash in rank and at risk of being outmatched by the newer generation, and his final transformation in giving up all his pride to ask people with much lower seniority than him for help are all very introspective heavy. A significant part (I want to say 30%) is written from the Kiyotaki's perspective.
This parallels volume 5 where Keika prevails against Ayumu's master (Shiyakando), which I consider the second most touching scene in the entire novel because how emotional Keika got. Author really captured the essence of all the seemingly reward less effort finally giving Keika the single win that awarded her with the recognition that she never got over that many years. There are many characters featured that spent their live trying to pursue their career in this field and had to give up in the end. The tenacity to hold on and finally being rewarded is so overwhelming that there is seriously no word. Without Keika's win, I am sure Yaichi would not be able to beat Meijin.
In the end, Kiyotaki says boyishly that he still has not given up his dream/goal of becoming Meijin someday.
And we find out from the afterward that author's mother died while he was writing volume 5. Rest in peace.
Wow thanks for the spoilers! Im curious, how big of a role does red Ai have? I heard that she is kinda unimportant which sucks because she's the character Im most interested in.

Thanks for the spoilers! I don't know why people keep shitting on Ginko, I may just have read volume 1 and I'm watching the anime but I can clearly see a large potential for character growth to her, also, I really hope that Yaichi will not date/marry Ai at the end, if it's any girl of the series close to his age I'm okay, but with a nine year old girl? nope, gives me a bitter taste.

Go should still have more permutations because of more legal moves. Reading can get insanely deep when a player draws out a fight that spreads across the entire board leading to an all or nothing game. On top of reading ahead for both games, Go employs more pattern recognition and thin slicing, alternating between macro and micro views and focus more on army deployment (with no concern to the type of troops) as opposed to coordinating different capabilities of different kinds of troops in shogi. I guess it is also for this reason I find Shogi to be particularly hard in a different way. Unique piece have unique moves and there are a lot more vectors than chess from that alone. On top of that, promotion system and prisoner-usage further increase the number of vectors. Not to mention the colors are the same for both sides and the facing is what differentiates the armies (so that prisoners can be re-used).
While I can't explain it well, the permutations resulting from Shogi and those resulting from Go cannot be compared in an apple-to-apple fashion. I suppose they activate different parts of the brain.
It could also be I'm n00b to Shogi and just used to playing Go a lot more.

Go is indeed very complex, but luckily, the rules are simple so it's easy to learn, hard to master. What I find fascinating with shogi is the capture system can be used to allow attacks from a defensive position on the board. Trading of pieces is beneficial to both parties as they can be dropped in enemy base whenever and due to pieces always being on the board, it's always never a draw.

I agree with what you said about Keika. Many readers completely underestimating her, but for me, she is one of the best characters so far in this series. She is my waifu and I really want her for Yaichi, especially when she admit that she loves Yaichi and wants him to take responsibility and marry her if she didnt get Ryou's title. Also when she gets her win against Ayumu's master, without it Yaichi will never win the match against meijin. But I'm so sad she was overshadowed by Ai and Ginko.

purely by system, I'd say I like Go more than Shogi, Go match can go very deep since the board is essentially free for all, which required very extreme planning for the end game, in fact, in Go, situation when 1 weaker side suddenly turn around is actually very common. In Shogi, advantageous side is more recognizable, and shogi have a lot of rule, which like Lare mentioned, the hostage rule. considering each piece have their own moveset as well, learning curve for shogi is actually pretty bad.

So is Yashajin Ai just gonna be a minor character in the future? Does she have any chance against Ai and Ginko?

I like go better too to be honest. But as much as they're compared there's really no comparison. If anything, I'd say that shogi is a bout battles and go is about wars. With go, you know that you're not going to completely conquer, that it's impossible without severe handicaps or crazy gaps in skill to stop an opponent from possessing some amount of territory. In fact, a lot of the most famous games ended with a very narrow gap in territory. Technically there's a winner, but both have obtained something. On the other hand, in shogi the objective is to annihilate the opponent. The opponent's right to the board depends entirely on the king, and you only win if you can kill that king, capturing the enemy army. I think that's the entire reason why I like go better, as it's a little more realistic and willing to compromise, but it's also why shogi does a little better in fiction, as it's a more intense all-or-nothing battle. That's not to say that go can't work, Hikaru proved otherwise, but still the all-out battle image makes it a little easier to draw people in I imagine.
Volume 8 to be release on March 15, 2018
I’ve done some research on shogi rankings and how shogi players become professionals. It’s actually quite complex.
Amateurs and professionals have their own ranking system. Amateurs start from 15th Kyuu to 1st Kyuu and then 1st Dan to 8th Dan, while professionals and apprentice professionals start from 6th Kyuu to 9th Dan. Amateur 4th Dan is typically equivalent to apprentice professional 6th Kyuu level. Promising young amateur players can take the examination to enter the Kenshuukai where members are amateur Dan level players. The Kenshuukai is divided into F2, F1, E2, E1, D2, D1, C2, C1, B2, B1, A2, A1 and S classes. Members get promoted or demoted based on their performance in recorded matches. Members of the lowest F class are typically amateur 2nd Dan level and those of the highest A and S classes are typically equivalent to apprentice professional 6th Kyuu level. Amateur players after achieving certain criteria can take the examination to enter the Shoureikai to become apprentice professionals. Most were amateur 5th Dan or less before entering the Shoureikai and because of this amateur 6th and 7th Dan players are rare and no one has ever achieved amateur 8th Dan rank.
Apprentice professionals in the Shoureikai are ranked from 6th Kyuu to 3rd Dan. Only 19 year olds and younger are allowed taking the entrance examination to earn Kyuu rank. If there are recommendations from at least 4 professionals, 16 year olds are eligible to take examination for Shoureikai 5th or higher Kyuu rank, 17 year olds for 4th or higher Kyuu rank, 18 year olds for 3rd or higher Kyuu rank, 19 year olds for 1st Kyuu rank. 16-18 year olds are allowed to earn 6th Kyuu rank with benefits such as exempt from primary examination if they achieved Kenshuukai S rank. 15 year olds and younger are eligible to take 6th Kyuu rank examination if they achieved either Kenshuukai C1 rank or top 4 in elementary or middle school level national tournament. If they achieved Kenshuukai A2 rank or higher, they are exempt from primary examination. They are also eligible to take examination for 6th or higher Kyuu rank if there are recommendations from at least 4 professionals and are exempt from primary examination if also achieved both Kenshuukai B1 rank or higher and winner of elementary or middle school level national tournament during the year. Amateur players are allowed to take the examination to earn 1st Dan rank if they are 22 years old or younger, have recommendation from at least 4 professionals and have earned first or second place at a national amateur tournament. Anyone that has recommendation from at least 4 professionals and won 6 amateur tournaments in the same year is allowed to take the examination to earn 3rd Dan rank. Once apprentice professionals raise their rank to 3rd Dan, they participate in the 3rd Dan League where only two people every half a year are promoted to 4th Dan and gain professional status. Shoureikai members get promoted or demoted based on their performance in recorded matches and they must achieve 4th Dan rank by the age of 26 or they will be forced to leave the Shoureikai. Some players that failed to achieve 4th Dan rank by the age of 26 are allowed to take a special examination that will give them a chance to earn professional status. Professionals are ranked from 4th to 9th Dan and the ranks typically reflect their accomplishments such as number of official matches won or titles earned. They are also divided into C2, C1, B2, B1 and A classes in ranking battles which typically reflect how strong they are. Professionals can get promoted or demoted based on their performance in ranking battles and tournaments.
Female professionals are very different from the usual professionals. Female players can receive the same regular professional status as males but no female has ever reached professional 4th Dan rank. The highest achievement ever by a female is Shoureikai 3rd Dan in both the LN’s story and real life. There is a separate system for female players where they can receive female professional status and they rank from female 3rd Kyuu to 6th Dan. Female players age 25 or younger that achieve C1 rank in Kenshukai will receive female 3rd Kyuu rank and will then gain female professional status if promoted to female 2nd Kyuu. Most female players that became female professionals after achieving Kenshukai C1 rank are weaker than Shoureikai’s lowest ranked who are around Kenshuukai A2, A1 or S rank level. Female players that join the Shoureikai first will never gain female professional status because they must join the Kenshuukai first in order to gain female professional status (Ginko probably never joined the Kenshuukai and went straight for the Shoureikai which is the reason she’s not a female professional). But female Shoureikai members can still gain female titles since there are tournaments that are open to any female. Players that already have female professional status can still join the Shoureikai later.
Ai received female professional status after reaching Kenshuukai C1 rank in Vol 5 and was then promoted straight to female 2nd Kyuu due to her performance in a tournament during Vol 4. I don’t know about Ten-chan (Ai #2) but she did as well as Ai did during the tournament in Vol 4 so she should be a female professional too if she has already reached Kenshuukai C1 rank. Ai is also already eligible to take the Shoureikai entrance examination. She was already amateur 3rd Dan in Vol 1 so in the latest volume she should already possess skills of at least Shoureikai 6th Kyuu. There should be half a year until the next Shoureikai entrance examination in the LN’s story, so Ai could raise her Kenshuukai rank to A2 in the meantime so that she will be exempt from the primary examination. If she has recommendations from at least 4 professionals, she can try to enter the Shoureikai starting from a higher Kyuu rank. She can even try to enter the Shoureikai starting from 1st Dan if she has recommendations and earned first or second place at a national amateur tournament. Ai’s goal in the story is to gain a female title before graduating from middle school though so it doesn’t matter if she joins the Shoureikai or not since there are female tournaments that are open to any female. But if she plans to gain the same professional status as males in the future then it’s better to join the Shoureikai as soon as possible since Shoureikai members need to gain professional status by the age of 26.
Can anyone who's read ahead tell me how much development there is between Yaichi and Ai #2? She's my favorite character and has me hooked for more :o

nah, I don't think it's that bad, I mean, when I heard of news for the anime, I was kinda expected that some match got skipped. As long as important Matches that required for development got it I don't really mind
Here’s what happens later in the LN.
Ai becomes famous after becoming one of the two youngest female professionals in history at the age of 10. She along with Ai #2 and Keika participate in the MyNavi Female Open tournament. Ai defeats Ika Sainokami (a female title holder) and then passes the qualifiers in Vol 4. However, Ai loses in the first round of the main tournament in Vol 5 against Ryou Tsukiyomizaka (a female title holder who Ginko defeated easily in Vol 2) partly due to Ai’s shogi being off. Ai also reaches Kenshuukai C1 rank in the same volume and because she had passed the qualifiers of the tournament she automatically gains female professional status with Female 2nd Kyuu rank as of Vol 6.
Ten-chan (Ai #2) who is almost 2 months younger than Ai also becomes famous after becoming the youngest female professional in history and is even called “Kobe’s Cinderella”. After passing the MyNavi tournament’s qualifiers and reaching Kenshuukai C1 rank, she gains female professional status with Female 2nd Kyuu rank as of Vol 6. Ten-chan then gets promoted to Female 1st Kyuu rank as of Vol 7 when she reaches the semifinal (this is probably a mistake by the author because she should be Female 1st Dan at this point). In Vol 7, she plays against Ryou in the semi-final and wins (Ten-chan’s rank should be Female 1st Dan after this but it’s not stated). Now she’s considered one of the high-ranking female professionals and she will play against Machi Kugui (a female title holder) in the final match. If she wins she will get promoted straight to Female 2nd Dan rank and earns the right to challenge Ginko for the ‘Queen’ title.
Keika doesn’t reach Kenshuukai C1 rank, but passes the qualifiers of the MyNavi tournament in Vol 4. In Vol 5, she defeats Rina Shakando (a female title holder who is a veteran female 6th Dan and Ayumu's master) in the first round of the main tournament. She reaches the Top 8 after defeating Rina which earns her provisional female professional status with Female 3rd Kyuu rank.
Ginko plays against a boy named Souta in Vol 6 and it is a very important battle in the shogi world. If Souta who is 11 years old wins he would be the youngest ever to earn apprentice professional 3rd Dan rank. Sora eventually wins and becomes the first female ever to earn apprentice professional 3rd Dan rank in the LN’s story. She will be participating in the 3rd Dan League and if she wins first or second place then she will be promoted to 4th Dan rank and gain professional status.
Yaichi has Ryuo title challenge matches in Vol 5 in order to defend his title. His opponent is a Meijin, and Yaichi’s frustration from losing some of the matches affects Ai’s performance in Vol 5. Yaichi eventually reconciles with Ai and they have a ceremony where they exchange vows of master and disciple with both families there, which looks like a marriage ceremony. Yaichi’s engagement with Ai and them living together makes national news. Yaichi eventually defends his title at the end of the volume.
Hopefully Ai participates in another tournament soon in order for her rank to catch up to Ten-chan's fast.

She reaches the Top 8 after defeating Rina which earns her provisional female professional status with Female 3rd Kyuu rank.

In before Ginko challenges Ai to call off the engagement
I wish we can see this scene from Vol 6 animated. :D
At home, Ai is at Yaichi’s home looking cute as shown in a pic. She brought food and while eating he feeds her in “Aaan” way. Ai’s cuteness is causing Yaichi to keep saying “I’m not a lolicon, I’m not a lolicon, I’m not a lolicon, I’m not a lolicon…”. They then talk about the food which includes the words “kisu tempura”, “cuspajs (pronounced chuusupaisu)”, “inside” and “French toast” in their conversation. Yaichi then finds a magazine that Ai was carrying in her backpack which shows how JS can please a lolicon. He then finally understands Ai’s recent actions and that the clothes she’s wearing are “lolicon-killing clothes”. Yaichi then seriously asks Ai to sit down in seiza way but Ai misunderstands the situation.
“Finally the time is here…Father, Mother…thank you for raising me…tonight, I will give all of myself to Master.”
Ai starts taking off her clothes and Yaichi tries to stop her. Keika who brought food then walks in and sees Yaichi on top of undressed Ai while holding her clothes.
“Y, you two…I knew it…s, since when? No, don’t say it, I don’t want to hear it!!”
“Wait! That’s not it!! Keika-san, please don’t misunderstand, I’m not a lolicon!!”
“Lolicon is what everyone is saying!!”
“That’s right, Master is not a lolicon!! I’m being seriously loved by Master!”
“THAT’S WHAT LOLICON IS!!”
It takes almost 2 hours for Yaichi to clear up the misunderstanding later.
I just found out that not all of the participants in the Ryuo tournament are professionals. 4 female players, 5 amateurs and 1 Shoureikai member that have been chosen are allowed to be in the tournament though they have to start from the bottom class. Does Ginko participate in the Ryuo tournament since she’s the strongest female player?

Is that really all there is to Ika's motivations? Doesn't make much sense. Ginko would kill to be Yaichi's girlfriend, but she's not and plays shogi with him all the time. Why does Ika need to go so far just to play shogi with him?

Spoiler from volume 8 so far thanks to someone from FB
So to sum it up, some details about V8 which have surfaced in 2ch:
> Machi wins the title match against Ryou and defends her title.
> The match this time is based on the 39th Joryuu Meijin title match between Kana Satomi and Hatsumi Ueda, particularly the fifth game. (Kifu: http://live.shogi.or.jp/joryumeijin/kifu/39/joryumeijin201302270101.html)
> Kansousen implies Ten-chan will be the one to face up against Ginko for the Joou title match.
> In regards to Yaichi, Machi admits that she doesn't have any desire to monopolize him like Ai, nor is she a stubborn and dishonest girl like Ginko; she is simply content with being able to stay close to Yaichi and support him.
> The author mentions in the afterword that he's getting married with a bookstore staff who is a fan of his works.

I don't think Ginko will lose her title. My guess is she will keep her title for another year. Ai will probably be the one to challenge Ginko next year and by that time Ginko would have already been promoted to professional 4-dan. If this happens then Ai will be facing the strongest female player who has the same professional status as males and also a love rival. Ginko is probably being set up as the final boss for Ai in the series because there's no one better.

Seriously, this series has such beautiful older girls as love interest for Yaichi that it feels stupid to pair him with a eight year lolis. In fact there is no reason for him to become a lolicon at all.
Here's what I know from the preview.
Ten-chan wins against Machi but the match is skipped. Ten-chan gets promoted to Female 2-dan and will challenge Ginko for the Joou title.
Machi has earned the Yamashiro Ouka title 5 times after defeating Ryou in the previous volume and so she has Queen title (the female equivalent of eternal title).

The girl with the baby looks like Tamayon, also who is this Thorn Princess character? Any info on her?
Courtesy of AP24 on discord.
From what I can tell, she's the previous title holder for both of the titles Ginko has now
Her nickname is Ibarahime (literally means Thorn Princess, but it's the Japanese name for Sleeping Beauty)
She was the first Joou and Joryuu Gyokuza and kept holding those titles until Ginko took them away. She was also on her way to take Rina's Joryuu Myouseki title.

Based on the anime I thought Ai Hinatsuru was a slam dunk; she's given the most development and has the closest relationship with Ryou. They had an omiai, engagement, wedding, and honeymoon, LOL.
Maybe the light novel is different from the anime?

Yeah, last volumes gave protagonism to red Ai whose opponent was Ginko so it's also the reason why blue Ai didn't have much screentime. It had to, Jin didn't have much screentime before that.

Thanks pal
For female pros, you can actually tell how talented a player is just from her rank and the age she achieved her latest rank.
Average female players that increase their ranks mostly by winning a lot of matches would reach female 2-dan at around 30 years old, 3-dan in their mid-30s and 4-dan in their 40s.
Ryou and Machi reached female 4-dan before they turned 20 and should reach 5-dan in their 20s. If Ginko was a female pro from the beginning, she would have reached female 5-dan at the age of 12 or 13.
Ten-chan is currently female 2-dan. She will be 3-dan if she wins a title once, 4-dan if she wins 3 times and 5-dan if she wins 7 times. There are 6 female shogi titles so she has 6 chances every year although two of the titles currently belong to Ginko. But so far out of all female players, Ten-chan is probably the closest to Ginko's level.
As for Ai, it's likely she will be female 1-dan in the next volume. She needs to be a title challenger to reach Ten-chan's current rank soon. So far Ai's level is probably closer to Ryou's and Machi's.
Is there any hope for red Ai? Or is it just a contest between blue Ai and Ginko for main heroine?

Cover for vol 10 and limited edition
Release at Feb 14, 2019
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DxhMNxIW0AYRlnM.jpg
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DxhMPNtWwAEJr13.jpg
According to the synopsis, it will focus on the other JS girls participating in an elementary school level tournament and Yaichi will be training them. It will also focus on Ai and Ginko's official matches.
Ai is currently in the Joryuu Myouseki tournament (which is the LN's version of Joryuu Meijin) and the volume will show her facing off against a mysterious female pro player who is standing in her way of passing the preliminaries and entering the main stage. I'm guessing later in future volumes Ai will be facing against strong opponents like Ryou, Machi and others during the main stage and then face Rina during the title matches. Finally after defeating the strongest female pro players, Ai will face Ginko who is the strongest of all female shogi players in the next Joou title matches.
Whoa is there any way to find the v10 Ginko cover without the texts?
It's difficult to find volume cover without texts. Also, Vol 10 preview is out and here's what I know.
In the beginning of the volume, Ai had already reached the Joryuu Myouseki preliminaries final and her rank is Joryuu 1-kyuu. Ten-chan already lost in the preliminaries 1st round (which should have happened between Vol 6 and 7). The one who defeated Ten-chan will face Ai in the preliminaries final. If Ai wins the match she will reach the league stage (which is a series of matches in round-robin format that will decide who will be the title challenger).
Ai's opponent is in the same generation as Azami and Tamayo and her nickname is "Immortal Wings". She was the first female elementary school Meijin and considered the most gifted female player of her generation. If she had become female pro from the start she would have been the first Joou instead of Azami. It seems she was in the Shoureikai but she didn't even reach 1-dan and was forced to drop out.
The JS girls are planning to participate in an amateur tournament for elementary school students. Ai can't participate because she's a paid professional player. It is shown in a colored pic that a girl named Kannabe Maria is participating and she is probably the current elementary school Meijin and Ayumu's little sister. The girls will have training sessions with Yaichi at their school.
So Ai and Ten-chan won't face off in Joryuu Myouseki tournament, that's too bad but maybe they will in another tournament. After several volumes, Ai is finally getting a focus on one of her matches. I wonder if the author will introduce more new female players that are comparable to the female title holders.
If Red Ai doesnt become main heroine I will kms by smashing my head with tofu

I thought Ginko was going to get omega destroyed and she will finally get the "power-up" arc that she so sorely need to become join the "big boys club" (no pun intended). Obviously the bigger the fall, the sweeter the climb back up. The cathartic moment would've been MASSIVE.
But nooooooo, her breakdown is not even related to her skill level issue, it's stupid emotional issue that Rei (from 3gatsu no lion) is facing with destroying someone else with winning. W. T. F. Oh well, at least I can look forward to some Yaichi Ginko moment next volume if 81 stop having negative values with his emotional quotient.
That. And I can look forward to when Ginko actually gets destroyed due to the skill gap, which would've been a real character development arc that author is still saving for the future unlike this filler development. Highlight of the volume is definitely the superrrr cute Maria. I'm not even a fan of loli nor animal ears but she is just super adorable!!!

Well, she may perhaps be the closest thing to a romantic partner Yaichi has. He and Ginko has held hands several times throughout the series and they both seem to feel comfortable doing that too, even in public.
His reaction to her saying she hated him in that love hotel was also the only time he got depressed since he thought (and hoped) they had something else connecting them other than shougi. And the. She uses him as a pillow the whole night they stayed there... Is he that thickheaded?
He also went totally crazy when he and Ginko had their... private shougi (cosplay sessions) each time they went to those love hotels again after practice with Maestro. Even going as far as stripping parts of her costume himself... What in the world is wrong with him?

All those years of abusing him since childhood mentally neutered him from daring to ever consider Ginko to be anything beyond just friends so no form of bodily contact would work on Yaichi no matter how "hard" she tries.
The reason why he is all over Ai is because of that, Ginko made of Shogi a no fun allowed game, while Ai didn't. She only has herself to blame but her pride won't allow it .
Closest "romantic" partner is an stretch :heh:.

New volume to be relased this 8th.
Preview is available. Ginko going mental continues, she gets better later and her plan to make to Yaichi develop feelings for her backfire once again.
That's the limited edition cover btw. Also today is Yaichi's birthday.
Ginko already lost 3 matches in a row in the 3-dan League and her next opponent is Souta which makes her mental state even worse. In Vol 6 Souta was overwhelming Ginko and she only won mostly by luck. I wonder if she will be able to win properly this time.
The Meijin-sen final match occurs during this volume and if Meijin defends his title he will earn his 100th title. I wonder if he will end up unable to win his 100th title and losing all of his current titles like Habu in real life.
Vol 12 most likely will be focusing on Yaichi. The Teii-sen challenger decision match might occur during this volume and if Yaichi wins he will challenge Okito for the Teii title later. This volume should take place during July so Yaichi's birthday is probably coming up in next volume.
Ai should be starting her MyNavi preliminaries and Joryuu Myouseki League soon. She will probably end up challenging Rina for her Joryuu Myouseki title and then Ginko for her Joou title. The previous MyNavi preliminaries was in Vol 4 and the Joou-sen was in Vol 9, so the LN should have more than 15 volumes.

Well that too could become a path to improvement. I recall for instance in Shion no Ou, one of the main girls was forced to realize she was kind of holding herself back, playing "kind" shogi, always holding back from seriously overwhelming her opponents or taking advantage of amateur mistakes, resulting in her not being aggressive enough to climb her way to the top. Once Ayumi told her off for being too gentle she took some lessons and learned to fight to kill. Same could be the case here: she may have hidden fears of such things that could be keeping her from reaching the heights she could reach, keeping her from following her thoughts into the most ruthless paths, and if she can overcome this and accept what it really means to climb upward in this world then she may finally become a proper contender.

Volume 11 Spoilers from 5chan
>Yaichi confessed to Anedeshi and atop calling her Anedeshi and goes back to calling her Ginko-chan
>Ginko said that she will answer when she atleast they become a pro (but its already obvious that they are in a relationship now)
>Yaichi and Ginko kisses
>Ginko defeat Souta and enter awakening (the genius Shogi Kid)

Yaichi confessed to Ginko and they also kissed. But she won't give a reply until she becomes a pro.
Yaichi calls her Ginko-chan now like he used to in the past.
Ginko had an awakening which made her one of the shogi aliens and she won against Souta.

Best girl.....is not the term I’d use for her given her............violent nature which dwarfs many other violent tsunderes in how stupid a reason she’ll beat up Yaichi for (it’s honestly amazing how these MCs can get around the violent beatings they endure and confess like this, I like tsunderes but things like this are ridiculous), but she’s my top pick as far as this title is concerned simply because of non-jailbait. The others are just a little too loli. :heh: Now if she’ll take this opportunity to finally stop beating up Yaichi for stupid things or obvious misunderstandings, that would massively upgrade her approval rating in my book.
On the other hand I’m going to hold back a little and keep my eyes open for the red herring. Not because I actually think the author is going to fake us out with this, but because sometimes you just never know. :heh:

The tsundere that sometimes is violent, or going to prison from laying hands on an underaged minor.
Yeah..............
How strong is Yaichi as of current volume? Is there anyone stronger than him or close to his level?
Determining who is stronger in shogi is difficult, but from what I've seen Yaichi should be one of the Top 5. I'm more interested in how strong Ai is now. It's obvious Ginko will be the final boss for Ai but it's going to be very difficult now that Ginko has awakened into one of the shogi aliens. Ai is now stronger than before but she still would have difficulty against pre-awakened Ginko.
Huh only top 5? I thought he would either be the strongest if not 2nd to the Meijin since he won the Ryuuou title

People arguing over becoming a lolicon or going for the abusive Tsundere. Both trash options and the worst part is they're the most likely to happen. If he just gets with Machi, Ryou or Keika we wouldn't have to deal with jail or crazy, but they're just side girls and not real options.
Yashajin ai is best option but thats clearly never gonna happen so ginko is the best compromise :/

He didn't "marry" Ai. He just took her in as a disciple, with an agreement that he would marry her if she fails to win a title before graduating junior high. Considering Ginko has two titles and is still in junior high, I'd say it's doable. Especially considering that she's already able to push Ginko hard enough to force her to get serious when she's at the top of her game. She decayed a bit afterward until Yaichi got her a rival, but given that at the time she only had a few months' experience, she could definitely steal at least one title.
Soooo does Yashajin have any chance at all? or is it basically Ginko winning with Blue Ai guaranteed if Ginko loses?

That was at volume 6 I think when the series was supposed to end.
Series became popular and the author decides to keep publishing his work.
Ryuuou Vol 12 synopsis is out.
It is said to be the finale of the 3-dan League arc, so I'm guessing Ginko will become a pro at the end of the volume.
It also says Yaichi will face the strongest enemy in order to obtain a new title, which I'm guessing he will face Okito in the Tei'i title matches.

The build-up of tension from the previous volumes.
The alternating perspective between two characters showing you the power of a childhood friend.
The absolute PINNACLE of cuteness when a tsundere is completely shifts to the dere side instead of tsun (d'awwwwwww).
I regret so hard that I didn't read this upon release. I have not had such a satisfying single volume in such a longggg time. Everything you could've asked for you got. The bonus short story's just icing on the cake. This volume easily reminds me why I love light novels so much. Such a nice balance of hotbloodness, drama, and LOVE. Can't wait for more idiot-couple moments between the two. Ayy lmao at the volume releasing on Valentine Day. Highly anticipating this one.
I don’t find your disbelief surprising at all. -_-
Tsunderes are popular and all, but........her cons are a bit more extreme than most others...............
Tsundere waifu is master race :heh:

I won't have problem with Ginko if she's not the violent type.This.
I definitely think she’s the most attractive of all the girls (though a lot of that is because the other options are all jailbait as I mentioned before), but........the way she treats Yaichi is just...................... :upset:
Hopefully now that the two of them are an official couple she’ll tone that part down.

I even heard that they tone down his TSUN attacks in the anime.
I really can't understand japan's taste on violent girls :heh: :heh: :heh:
are they M or something :heh: they even liked to be electrocuted by liking a certain trigger happy electro master or getting whipped by loli pinkett.
I would like more if its the two AI's but I'm really surprised with Ginko relationships.
No, the author has been trying to be politically correct lately because of his grandfather being old/passing away who had bad impression of the LN industry.

so lately, the author is toning down Ginko's rampage?
I have only read the english release books and haven't payed much attention on spoiler details on later on.
its good if she's not becoming violent but I don't know..... to make her character change out because of outside interference(what the author experience with the passing of relative) its just doesn't sit well with me, unless its done good.

Well in the anime Hinatsuru calls Ginko out for her violence and Ginko loses quite badly
Ginko reaped what she sowed
I guess the light novels are very different
Ginko struck me as mild in terms of violence.
Vol 12 trial read is out.
Yaichi played against Meijin again and won. He will be playing against Okito for the Teii-sen and probably against him again for the Ryuuou-sen.
Ginko is in the lead but it looks like there is still some hope for Ai.

Wow. Yaichi's really come far, hasn't he? Defeating the Meijin again? How close was the match?
I can't remember the last time I saw a tsundere heroine go through the shredder as much as Ginko has. Good for her. She's earned it.

Watashitachi no Tamura-kun has a tsundere heroine go through the shredder too
She is much more sympathetic though, she shapes up on her own and is a legit victim
Hopefully Ginko is changing for the better too, but I don't think Ai is slowing down any time soon

The match was skipped. Yaichi's next opponent is probably even stronger than Meijin.

It's not just Ai, even Ten-chan is making her move this volume as shown in a colored pic.

Winko!
So next volume will probably focus on Ai and how he will broach the subject of his relationship with Ginko since they will be open about it from now on, he is fully committed to it and even start imaging his married life with her and how many kids they will have

I kinda agree. It's kinda pointless if Ginko and Yaichi are already in relationship. This confession while sweet just stings.
Anybody know when the game will be released or if it was delayed or canceled
But Ten-chan end is 0% right? :(

But Ten-chan end is 0% right? :(
Any other end besides Ginko is 0%, author is just a try hard attemping to keep readers hooked to avoid more drops, and that is what a true coward does.
I wouldn't say that.
She likes Yaichi and isn't the type to give up, so it's pretty in character to do what she did.
But yeah, in the end Ginko will win, so poor Ai (Ten-chan that is, nobody cares about blue Ai).

Anyone know exactly where the anime ends in the light novels volume wise? Thanks!
Now that the Shoureikai story is over, most likely the story will focus more on the female pro matches next. Here's the latest progress on all of the female pro tournaments.
Joou: For the previous season, the MyNavi preliminaries were from July to August and the main rounds were from November to March. Joou-sen normally occurs from April to June but due to circumstances the first match between Ginko and Ten-chan occurred in late March and the third match was 10 days later. For the current season it's mentioned in Vol 12 that the MyNavi preliminaries are over. Ten-chan, Ryou and Machi should be in the current season's main rounds since they were in previous season's Top 4. It's likely Vol 13 will tell us who else are in the main rounds. Also, Ginko is now a regular pro player so this season's title matches might not be between Ginko and a challenger.
Joryuu Myouseki: For the previous season, the title matches began in January and ended in February or March. For the current season, Ai's matches in the preliminaries occurred from February to May. Ten-chan lost during the first round of the preliminaries because her opponent was strong and she was focusing more on the Joou-sen that happened at the same time. Ai is now in the league stage after passing the preliminaries in Vol 10. There's still no mention of her progress in the league stage but Ai most likely will end up being the title challenger since she and Rina declared war on each other in Vol 10. Since Vol 12 ends in September and the title matches start in January, I estimate we will see the matches between Ai and Rina in Vol 15.
Joryuu Gyokuza: The title matches occur during fall so the next one should start in Vol 13. Ginko is now a regular pro player so this season's title matches might not be between Ginko and a challenger. Based on what Ten-chan said in Vol 12, she's playing in the current season and hasn't lost as of August. Ai registered as female pro before Ten-chan so she should be playing in the current season too but her progress is unknown.
Yamashiro Ouka: Previous season's title matches occurred in March. It's unknown if the current season has started already as of Vol 12.
Joryuu Teii: No info on progress or even what month it starts and ends. But if the schedule is similar to its real life version then the title matches would have been finished recently and Ai and Ten-chan wouldn't have participated in the latest season since they registered as female pros after the season started. If that's the case the next season's preliminaries should start soon.
Joryuu Gyokusho: No info on progress or even what month it starts and ends. But if the schedule is similar to its real life version then the title matches should have started recently or soon. Ai and Ten-chan should have participated in the latest season but their progress is unknown.

How has Ai even handled the fact she lost the bowl? lol
Judging from Vol 13's cover, looks like we might see how she's feeling about it in the volume.
Vol 14 is scheduled for February 2021 and will have Drama CD bundled.
is the bowl actually over? or is there possibility or red ai still? :3
0% for anyone other than Ginko to win.
Two reasons for that.
In story reason: Yaichi has been in love with Ginko since he was little, so no reason to go for the lolis.
Meta reason: Ginko is faaaaaaaaaaar too popular now, the author can't just suddenly decide to make someone else win.
wasnt ginko struggling with a mental breakdown or something? either way I like ginko too, just blue ai is kind of meh
That was in vol 10 because of the pressure in the 3dan league, but was resolved in vol 11.

But in the past he wasn't in love with Keika but was rejected by Keika?
He never really loved her, she was just that sexy older girl/woman who appeals to male instincts who he could like to not think about his feelings for Ginko.
DanielSong39
2020-07-12, 10:06
Well Yaichi was rejected by Keika so that ship sank from the start. Whether he loved her or not is not relevant if you ask me.
As for Ginko, can't argue with her popularity although I don't understand it. Might as well satisfy your consumers even if it's a bit distasteful. So I can't really blame the author here.
I'm only going by the anime but I could have sworn that Ai Hinatsuru (blue Ai) was the unquestioned lead there. Ginko was present as a potential love rival but ended up playing the role of a homewrecker. Plus Yaichi proposed to Ai in front of her parents and many witnesses, they had a wedding ceremony and even went on a honeymoon.
However I can accept that the light novel and anime are two completely different stories with different characters and different endings.

It's pretty obvious Gunko was the only female love interest in the light novels all along. They were going around helding hands all the time too. This story is literally, *their* story. Snow White and her little dragon.
Anime was rushed as hell (5 volumes in 12 episodes) and a lot was skipped.
Yaichi never proposed to Ai or anything, just swore he would make her a great shogi player. Dunno how the scene was in the anime, didn't watch.
I wouldn't understand Ginko's popularity by only watching the anime either. But in the LN, as the story goes you start to like her, then vol 11 hit you like a truck and you can't help but root for her.

The anime doesn't have him propose or anything. He begs her parents to allow him to take her as a live-in disciple, her mother declares that if she doesn't have a title by the time she enters junior high he has to marry her, and he says fine while Ai's excitement suggests she'd be quite happy with either outcome. So not really a proposal, just an expression of confidence in his disciple's abilities and a willingness to put his future on the line for her.
Vol 14 will be the start of the final arc
