Hahaha, all those girls and their design. I can already see butthurt of those anime fans who expected DEEP and MATURE/REALISTIC zombie series.
It's already expected to be an harem series the moment the cast is announced a few weeks ago.
The cast is as follows:
Mamoru Miyano as Kōtarō Tatsumi
Kaede Hondo as Sakura Minamoto
Asami Tano as Saki Nikaidō
Risa Taneda as Ai Mizuno
Maki Kawase as Junko Konno
Rika Kinugawa as Yūgiri
Minami Tanaka as Lily Hoshikawa
Anyway Who is character designer? They look familiar.
I don't know, but if it's even adapted from original character designs by a manga/novel/videogame artist like most originals nowadays, I don't doubt it. But it looks like Kasumi Fukagawa (Idolish 7) will be the animation character designer. Or not.

Hmm, saw the first episode today....
I have to admit, this was a rather unusual show even with the music.
There's a rather eerie mood with the setting and it's about as straightforward as it got. Zombies coming after one of the main girls (Sakura) right from the start as she feels helplessly trapped. Then, there's the idol part and she herself becomes a zombie. Most of the other cast doesn't seem to have much of a personality so far but we'll see soon how they develop.
They even got a zombie dog in this show LOL and it's quite unusual.
Definitely a weird show so far but I'm going to follow it to see where it goes.

Man, this show is so different than I expected. It's not like the prior info has any detail before the premiere but still it impressed me somewhat. It's a very good premiere nonetheless but before going into various aspects, I'll start with the production values: they are of above average quality and since music will be perhaps the focus of the overall narration, it works well enough. The visuals are very expressive and the hints that get displayed across have some meaning that will bring into light.
The protagonist, Kotarou, is as based as he gets and Sakura is a pretty nice character even with her flaws. Speaking of the story details, there's something that weirded me out early on: why is she so capable of talking and staying conscious at all times while other zombie girls can't until they sing all along in a concert? I get this is an anime and that the main heroine just so happens to be more strongwilled but still I just don't know why I'm so confused about some single minor detail. Anyways, the zombie setting in Saga (pun intended as a city and as a coming of age story), however so vague in information, shows some potential. As for the themes, well the zombie girls will be gathered to form a musical group to save the world but I felt that there's more to it than meets the eye. It's such a mysterious show that I would watch out for it and see what it will offer next.
Not sure what I expected, but that wasn't it :heh:
It was pretty damn fun. Mad scientist Houhouin Kyouma gave up on time travel and decided to form his own zombie idol group instead. Explanation for how he created the zombies? Just watch zombie movies.
This isn't a zombie anime with idols, but an idol anime with zombies. Certainly an interesting premise.

Truck-kun works fast these days. Makes sense, he has plenty of experience by now. That was really unexpected and made me burst out laughing.

Ummm...that happened.
My condolences to the main character. Run over and killed in the first few minutes and dropped into an utterly insane situation. But yeah, ok this is just going to be an idol anime where the girls are zombies. And their manager is way too much at all times. It kind of worked for when the guy voiced Okabe since that over the top Kyouma was entertaining. But this guy just feels as if he's yelling right in your face at all times.
It wasn't terrible. I'm sure it was good either though. It just kind of happened.

Well, the isekai show airing this season didn't use him so he had to go somewhere for work.
I went in thinking this would be some kind of Resident Evil or Dawn of the Dead type deal, but boy was I surprised. Started off so moe and bam!! Truck-kun followed by that heavy metal music. I really lost my shit with that one. lolol
A zombie-themed idol anime. Ah Japan, you never cease to amaze me. That said, despite not being what I expected it to be, the sheer absurdity of it all is enough to keep me interested. Let's see what they can do with this.

First minute in, thinking I gonna drop this, half a minute later, Truck-kun outta nowhere so quickly I got a jumpscare, metal opening while girl flying through the air, then zombie girls in weird clothes in a mansion, MC escapes just to find out she is a zombie as well and she is supposed to become a Zombie Idol to save Saga? Yeah, I am in. Good that nearly all the other girls woke up as well at the end, we can't have an Idol band that only screams and headbangs the whole time. xD
It seems like the girls will try out new music styles every episode. Heavy metal this week, hip hop next week. I hope they'll make the zombie thing more than a gimmick though.

Totally got bamboozled. Was excited for the next High School of the Dead, got undead Love Live instead. I mean, it's technically about Zombies in the prefecture Saga (which I know of a lot due to the area's unoffical video game being my favourite series, SaGa), so the title is technically not wrong, but you don't think of idol anime either, so I don't it's totally my fault. XD
Overall, it's probably going to be this seasons Cells at Work for me. Really unique show, but probably won't hold my interest once the gimmick wears off.

...Hmm...
The fact it is an original anime and the beginning of the episode was great.
...But unfortunately, the greatness stopped there.
The rest of the entire episode was literally
"We have no content, but if we get everyone to scream... it must be funny!"
It wasn't a good forcefulness.
Especially the guy. I love his voice and all, but that doesn't mean you can just get him to act like a clown and something immediately turns funny.
Hopefully now that there are more intelligent characters in the story, they can actually do something instead of just screaming around.
The fact that there is still some hope left for this show already makes this one of the better anime this season! Wow!
Anyways, hope it gets better.

Although I did enjoy the cameo by the ever reliable Truck-kun, I thought the rest was a bit too loud and obnoxious. The artwork was top notch however. If this becomes yet another social commentary on the Idol Industry, I'll most likely drop this one early.

Huh. It seems poeople had other expectations from this one. Makes me glad I went in mostly blind. Still, even if knew it was an idol show I didn't expect our heroine to get killed two minutes in. I certainly expect the not remembering what drove them in life aspect to stick, because that would be a nice way to do the mandatory character building episodes. And yeah, it was hilarious, I'm in.
By the way, is it me, or did the series just diss the Death Metal genre HARD this episode? I don't even like it myself, but even I think that was brutal.

Ahah, classic Mappa. Only them to make a musical anime with death metal zombie idols with a red/pink-haired MC :heh::heh:. It was actually very fun to watch and everything was unexpected or with some kind of a twist. That truck accident tho!
The only part i disliked was not having actual decent death metal growls by the characters. They should invite the singers from the Shingeki no Bahamut Openings to help them out :heh:.

I doubt. It seemed just an innocent parody of it since the studio behind this tend to use death metal songs in their anime. So they are probably big fans of the genre themselves.

Mamoru Miyano playing the manager is quite fitting considering he himself played idol characters before. :heh:
Wake the dead, up!!
Idol, zombie girls are going to save Saga, and I'm counting this will become this season's winner anime.
Just what the doctor prescribed, cute girl protagonist suddenly gets run through by a truck, and a decade later gets resurrected as a zombie by an outlandish manager in order to lead an all-zombie, idol group to save Saga prefecture.
And, to sum it up, the group has already come with a name of their own by the end of the first episode, "Death Musume".:D
Creepy and cute, zombie girls mixed with crazy, zombie antics is the best recipe for this Halloween season; I'm sold to this anime, and surprised it is an original series not based in either a manga or a light novel.

It may not be as great as the first episode, but it's still quite enjoyable. I'm a little surprised that almost all the idols can talk regularly, with the exception of Tae whom we still don't know about her. We finally get to see what Saki, Ai and Junko act like and their banter with Sakura are pretty funny. In this episode, hip hop is introduced as a episodic music focus with a classic Japanese flavor and I like how these girls above are learning things pretty easily as zombies. The characterization should be at least good and I'm curious to see how Yuugiri and Lily will behave for next episode, however let's see if the overall concept will stay for how long.
That was a nice follow up to the first episode. Loved how Saki kept mentioning her tamagochi. On a kind of related note, I'd like to see the older idols try to adapt to the modern world. The courtesan should be totally lost right about now, but she seems to be taking things pretty well. Well, it's not like it's a serious anime.
What are your thoughts on Sakura? When she died she was a nobody, so why would Kotaro recruit her? Furthermore, it looks like she's got experience performing. And obviously, there's a reason she's the only one missing her memories. Truck-kun may not have killed her.

This is so Screamer the Anime Series and I love it. XD
The rap battle was surprisingly well-done, Nr1 is such an improvisation talent. And with her courage and quick thinking she managed to get Saki on her side for future concerts. Looks like the former two Idols will be more trouble than the cute child actor and sexy geisha. Also 3D dancing next episode? Sounds like some proper Idol anime ala Love live or whatever they are called.
Kotaro really needs to work on his manager skills, like him getting gigs, his make up skills and music skills are great but he suuuuucks at motivating his Zombie Idols and leaves all that to poor Sakura trying her best that their cover does not get blown up.^^;
I think those girls already got two die-hard fans though. I wonder if we keep seeing that police officer more often, poor guy must have a Zombie trauma by now.

Dam Sakura dropped some mad rhymes
I have been thoroughly entertained for the 2nd week in a row. I think I'll be able to stick with this to the end.
Rap battle was really good too. Honestly didn't expect it to turn out that way.
As unbelievable as it sounds, the rap fest was not only well executed but the rhyme and rhythm were funny and catchy to listen to.
BTW, Tae-chan is just as adorable as a brain-dead zombie losing her limbs and head for octopus snacks in the middle of the concert much to Sakura-chan horror and chagrin. A this point, she must be the poster zombie girl for the group.
Ai-chan comes to a memorable mention since she as well literally lost her arms, and her eyes pop out from their sockets much to Junko-chan horror and outrage.
And, yes, living people around the world don't take with a warm reception a potential zombie apocalypse every time the girls venture outside in their undead, zombie forms; and infestation will ensue if the girls aren't careful with biting people, and, yet, they also have to be careful not to get shot at in public if their identities as zombies are exposed.

Definitely sticking with this one. The OP was fantastic in its craziness, Sakura is already a great protagonist balancing being the only one trying to salvage this whole mess while also providing great comedic moments, and Tae has reached legend status already by providing the funniest part of the episode with that head pop-off, though the rap battle that followed was very close, both to that and the level of musical quality we saw in devilman crybaby. It was pure fun and I want more.
Wow... where do I start?
When I first clicked play on episode one, I was fully expecting a zombie survival anime with cute girls and comedy. The first time I saw anything about it was a gif of their headbanging. I thought, "What in the hell is going on?" No context whatsoever. So eventually I picked this up expecting what I'd said before.
As soon as I got the camera position of Sakura running towards the street, I knew exactly what was coming, which didn't diminish the shock of it, ultimately. Death metal kicks in and I'm wondering what the in the living fuck I'm about to watch. It sure didn't disappoint. Perfectly timed comedy, balls to the wall voice acting from Miyano's VA, and a premise that had me wondering if I wasn't suddenly living in the Twilight Zone.
I'm absolutely hooked by these first two episodes. The production value seems great. The premise has promise. The characters are fun. There's almost nothing to dislike about this show on my end, which has me really excited, because I've not watched a series in a long, long time that had me eagerly awaiting the next episodes like this one has.
Mamoru Miyano sells the show to me.
I lost it when the police start rapping as well.

Death Musume still the best name despite being tentative and Mamoru Miyano being explosive is just too awesome that I wonder if the girls ever feel pressure because of his performance. LOL.

Well it's not just the policeman. The rappers too were unmanned at the sight of them. It almost seems an involuntary reaction. Because if you saw greenish people your first reaction wouldn't be to go for your gun. Seeing them in their zombie form seems to trigger something PRIMAL in humans.
Also the world doesn't seem to be one that has suffered a zombie apocalypse.
So yeah, it seems that Mr Manager-san has probably had his hand in arranging for their zombiefication. Maybe Sakura was the only/first to snap because she is the only he ran over or something. The rest he dug out of shallow graves.
Hell the traditional one shouldn't even have a corpse any more and would be a skeleton by now.

Well they do seem not to be normal humans but most of them should not even have left corpses to become zombies between their age and the fact that 99.5% of Japanese are cremated. So there manager has to have been body-snatching for hundreds of years or something.
He just a time traveler.
He just a time traveler.
Or he's a zombie himself.
Or he's an alien. Whatever the answer is, the premise is so whack that any answer or the lack of is fine.

Well shit, that was good rap in this chapter, makes me want to search a listen a song of Eminen when he was good.
Mamoru Miyano was born for this.
MAPPA is doing a splendid job with Zombie land SAGA, as the show itself not only incorporates tropes from two distinct genres but also smartly plays with them at the right timing to either subvert or follow them with comical results.
Honestly, the quality delivered in this anime incorporating for a first zombie girls that are going to become idols wants me to crave spinoffs based on this, for example, another show but featuring mahou zombie shoujo (magical zombie girls) as a guilty pleasure for me to watch.
Anyways, from the first episode it is a given that most of the current tropes are established, and each following episode is going to repeat the same pattern.
1. Kotaro playing elusive at failed attempts to conceal his lack of knowledge on a subject or question that any of the girls will ask him to demand proof on the matter.
2. The idol group's name changing with each episode as how Kotaro sees fitting for the context.
3. The girls performing concerts each involving a different musical genre from the previous one. For example, first episode featured death metal, second episode featured hip hop and rap, etc. At least, I hope for an upcoming episode the girls performing a live concert on Enka (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enka).
4. Every time running into the policeman with unfortunate but humorous results.
5. The girls performing at different locations (https://www.thecrazytourist.com/15-best-things-to-do-in-saga-prefecture-japan/) all throughout the Saga prefecture. Even the comercial break, eyecatch sequences hint at such probable locations, at least to make funny puns on the matter.
6. Just moments before going live on-stage, Kotaro delivers a passionate speech to Sakura as to their current episode's predicament. However, the moment she brushes it off as disbelieving whatever he says, he violently cuts her off by freaking out on the girls to go on-stage.
Nicknamed Zombie 01 due to being the only zombie girl who awakened previously before the rest of the bunch ....
7. Sakura finding either at the spur of the moment or through unconventional means, ways or solutions to get the group out of a bind when performing in concerts. Of course, Kotaro in the backstage also lends a helping hand in order for the concert to succeed.
8. I may see Sakura's trope as being the girl who tries to keep the integrity, harmony, and cohesiveness among the group in order to prevent it from splitting apart. So, it's no wonder that with each episode she'll be individually relating and befriending each of her zombie peers at a personal level before and after the concerts.

I'm in for more episodes.
It's actually kind of becoming a proper idol anime know. As proper as it can get with zombies and a crazy producer, who was hilarious at the beginning of the ep by the way.
I wonder if the (bad) CGI was intentional. I certainly hope the next performances will look better than that.
Yugiri best girl by the way.

Still can't like the producer. His attitude is just about tolerable but the way he speaks just hurts my ears.
Is starting to feel more "idol" like now. Not sure if that is a good thing or not though, heh. And it seems our policeman is indeed going to be a regular - will he spring a surprise one episode and turn up in two scenes!?
^ I also wondered if the CGI was intentionally a bit awkward too. Only way is up, I guess?

It's actually kind of becoming a proper idol anime I know.
I'm not if sure this is a good thing though. What really got me into this show was that, for the first two episodes, the show was not a proper idol anime. First two episodes, the girls performed death metal and rap. that was pretty much the appeal, zombie idols performing music genres that aren't usually associated with j-idols. if the show becomes a "proper" idol anime, i'm afraid the show will become some generic idol anime, with the girls being zombies becoming nothing more than a gimmick. hopefully i'm just over worrying about this

I'm with you there. The show would lose a lot of its charm if it tried to be as normal an idol anime as it can get.

Yeah, the "normal idol" aspect combined with the weak CGI made this episode the worst yet for me. Its second half, really, because the first one was still quite funny. But it's just not a concept that works if you try to play it too seriously, certainly not if done like this. Let's hope this isn't a trend, but I don't have too much hope.
I'm not sure if its becoming a "proper idol" show. Guerrilla performance is something that was started by punk rock groups.
Each episode feel like a parody of tv/movie concept.
Episode 1 was a scare movie parody.
Episode 2 was zombie movies + rappers.
Episode 3 was a parody of Love Live! (weak CGI included).
Episode 4 is going to be a parody of typical onsen episodes I bet.
Going by the opening sequence, it should turn into a Super Sentai parody eventually.
edit: episode 3 was kinda weak though, the jokes didn't land as well.
The Legendary Yamada Tae have been credited. Its no less than the Legendary Mitsuishi Kotono.

Because the first 2 episodes set such a high standard, we had much higher expectations. Trying not to be pessimistic here, but i really hope this anime isn't the kind of show that starts off amazing, and then fizzles out towards the end. I really would like this to become AOTS or even AOTY.

I'm rewatching both old and new episodes over and over everyday thanks to watching Sakura interact with the other zombie girls just to learn what antics they can come up with for the idol group.
Indeed, the first two episodes set such a high standard for the show that this current one sort of slowed down the frenzy that we were building up until now; lesson for us to not get too carried away with our hopes by setting expectations too high from the get go.
Nonetheless, I do agree with quite a few of you out there fearing that Zombieland Saga could eventually veer off towards developing into a typical idol show, and I would dread if that happens. I feel the anime's strength lies at how the staff can creatively play with tropes in order to parody them for gags and entertainment.
As we've previously posted, the third episode stopped cold our expectations built from previous episodes, as the girls focused more on rehearsing and practicing to deliver a guerilla performance like true idols. But doing so gave us, the audience, much dearth of information on both Junko and Ai at how they felt anxious and skeptical on this whole idol group "nonsense" attempting to put itself together, given that those two were experienced idols when alive.
Now, I'm commenting on the CGI employed during the whole street performance at the episode's climax. For me, I guess it was justified the bad quality of the CGI effects to remark to the audience that underneath all that cute make-up the girls are zombies, and their movements as such would be stiff and bizarre with all those crunching noise effects to emphasize the rigor mortis state of their current bodies.:heh:
Heck, even for gag and pun purposes, Yuugiri earlier in the same episode made the passing comment that with all of them being zombies wouldn't be surprising if their bodies started to give off foul stench of decay. Following, the girls' reactions were just priceless watching them all frenzied and suspicious at smelling themselves to look for possible foul odors. :heh:

So does Tae become obedient whenever it is convenient?
And is the dancing all going to be CG from now on?
And yeah, it is "cool" to hide Tae's VA and then reveal it is Mitsuishi Kotono (Legendary VA...?), but why reveal it now? If you aren't going to do that after a Tae episode, what was the point of hiding it in the first place?
Also, frankly, the motivation of the two to actually help perform and become cooperative is a bit weak.

You're right on the staff ruining part of the mystery shrouding Tae by revealing Mitsuishi Kotono as her seiyuu. However, Kotono-san is not listed as member of the group for this anime, Franchouchou, along with the six other seiyuu singing both the OP and ED songs.

Just watched the first episode of this.
...What. The. Fuck. :twitch:
Unlike episode 1 and 2, episode 3 is Franchouchou doing idol genre.
Conflicting members, a moment of recollection on park, slap that come with "We can do it!" (the execution is just so wrong compare to how it usually played that it kinda hilarious), also sing a song anywhere without permission (LOL). CGI is not exclusive to Love Live, most idol anime / concert now using CGI too, you should try watching live concert of anime idols that have dance of both said idols with their anime ver. on big screen.
I'd say the problem is the main theme of this episode is idol genre have not many way to make stupid part from it (unlike metal and rap before) but from usual anime cliches. Making the delivery kinda weak compare to first two episodes. Then again, two of their member are former idols, I expected a bit of flashback-- but not happened.
Maybe its just me but the reveal of Mitsuishi Kotono is not surprising as Tae coughs on this episode pretty much telling who is her VA (especially if you used listening to Mitsuishi Kotono role before). Make me wonder if Tae will finally have some dialogue or turned out being major plot point someday.

:heh:
IMO, I think Tae's identity is irrelevant for plot purposes because judging at how Kōtarō plainly addresses her as being a legend without delving on her background or any achievements, pretty much to me that sums up that in life Tae was an ordinary girl, plain and simple.
I think that is the pun and gag with those sort of characters with "mystery" attributes, backgrounds, features, names, etc. The audience at times is too worried at making such a big deal or trying to make sense of whom they are, where they come from, why they sport or have such strange attributes or ticks, and/or if does their presence inside the show has merits.
That's not the point. The point with those kinds of characters is that their presence can provide comic relief or delivering funny puns in order for the audience to keep themselves invested in the humor.
For this show, for example, a few audience members may still feel incessantly bugged at how did Kōtarō managed to turn or resurrect the girls as zombies. BTW, that question was brought up by Sakura in the first episode. But again that doesn't matter, because how the girls ended up as zombies is irrelevant to the plot. What's important though is the girls being zombies are coping with their undead existences in order to pull themselves together to become a functional, idol group with the following goals in order of importance:
1. Becoming Saga's prefecture best idol group in order for Saga to become the talk of the nation.
2. (Long term) becoming Japan's best Idol Group ever.
Now, what could be interesting, depending if it becomes or not relevant for plot purposes, would be the show raising the topic on the reasons, if they are any, at why the girls died.

Maybe i was overly critical earlier. While weaker than the explosive, fast paced first two episodes, ep3 was still a good, enjoyable episode overall. it focused more on introducing the characters and allowing more interaction between them, unlike the first two episodes where the spotlight was mostly on sakura. A breather, development episode basically. and in the context of being a parody of other idol shows, the jokes, the bad cgi does make sense.
the main cause of my worries was that it seemed the episode was taking the show into the "proper" idol anime direction, which would have killed most of the appeal.

In their defense? a lot of good idol anime have bad CG at the beginning. Aikatsu have pretty shit CG in the first episodes and improve with the time but well, it had 50+ episodes and here we haven't that luxury.
Since Zombie Land Saga isn't based on a source material, the producers and staff may or not decide to generate multiple, split cours for this show. Nonetheless, that direction also poses risks as with each passing season the contents for this show could become stagnant and the jokes redundant, moreover, that the show itself could completely transition into an all-out idol group anime.
However, from what I read and researched in the other forums the point of Zombie Land Saga is to parody both the Idol J-Pop groups and the zombie genera while playing with tropes of other stuff for comedy effects.
That means the current show cannot steer too much in either direction because the whole premise that this anime is trying to sell is zombie, undead girls becoming the hit of the nation as an idol group.
The following extremes would suck if the producers opt for any of those routes:
1. Kōtarō promising to resurrect the girls as fully, alive humans as long as they succeed at becoming Saga's best idol group in history, and, eventually, he commits to his promise.
2. Or the girls eventually reverting back to being mindless zombies.
To be honest, I do not wish for Tae awakening her consciousness becoming a smart zombie. The charm of her character at being a mindless zombie is to be the vessel for most comedy relief. IMO that would kill her character off, since she's also a reminder for the girls that they're now zombies and all of them already dead to boot.
I don't think it is that hard.
While there are complaint about how third episode being idol episode, then again, their primary goal is becoming idol capable of revitalize Saga prefecture.
I don't see anything bad about that as first and second episodes already telling that its their "extra" efforts after becoming a zombie playing a big part on their debut.
Third episode itself showing that despite their success on their first and second "concert", its not like people easily gathered for them.
At least, we know that spiky punk guy and his friend are started to be interested about them thanks to their first two concert, that's already good sign as both might lead to episode where they insist Franchouchou charm is their unexpected, neck-breaking performance (LOL).
What I'm more worried is how long that Franchouchou name lasted?
Death Musume when they goes metal, Green Face when they goes with rap, Franchouchou when doing idol job ...
Surprisingly fitting but if this keep going, they'll ended up having new name for each of genre they were having approach. LOL.

The problem is not that it was an idol episode, but that it was that the idol performance was just incredibly generic. What made the other episodes stand out was how the messed with the genre's. The death metal worked well with the whole zombie theme, especially when it came to their neck breaking head banging. The rap song had a great set up, and the it ended up having a very unique sound and was very catchy; and they still used the zombie aesthetic in not just the set up, but the song as well... The idol show was just boring and standard; it didn't even feel like a parody. They just did a regular idol song with the only notable quality being that the performance did not go well. I'd also mention, that's its actually a lot of fun just seeing them accidentally fall into success; that's good comedy right there
Though the use of CGI was the worst bit. That animation was so painful to watch; i can only pray that they will never touch it ever again

eh, feels more like a joke that forgot to deliver a punchline.
Like they made use of the CGI, but they didn't do anything with it. What might have been clever is if they started out with CGI, had a bad performance, and then when the other two girls jump in, they swap back to regular animation for when the performance goes well (What might even be better is if the two idols are the only ones using regular animation, while the others are CGI). Like the animators chose to use CGI to not just mock its use, but to also make the performance look bad for the TV viewers. The viewers feel what the crowd in the show feels; The crowd didn't like it, so neither should the viewers... Top it with a meta comment about their "awkward, amateur" dancing and you got your punchline
Though they also still need to work in the zombie aesthetic in there somewhere.

I like to think that this was more a breather episode, after the fast paced, explosive start. a chance to slow the pace and focus more on the characters. first episode, all the girls except sakura were still mindless zombies. 2nd episode, sakura still stole most of the spotlight during the rap battle, something in which ai and junko didnt even participate in at all. 3rd episode finally sees all of them working together for the ultimately failed guerrilla show. and perhaps that was the point. the guerrilla show was supposed to be bad and cringy. even though the girls manage to get their act together at the end, their generic idol performance was uninteresting to both the crowd and us the viewers. for we the viewers, the cgi made it even worse. from this the girls may realize that it will not be enough to just memorize and master the dance routine and song number. to revitalize saga, they will realize they must become more than just "proper idols". for this episode, the focus was not the performance, but the development of the girls themselves. just my opinion of course.
we will just have to see what happens in future episode. like you i really hope that they dont become generic "proper idols"

Continuing toward the normal idol path, but the episode still contained a lot of craziness. I think the episode struck a good balance this time, as opposed to last week's. I liked that the girls are still thinking about how they became zombies, which means it is an actual plot point. Kotaro won't be able to evade the question forever.

Nice to see that the girls themselves are starting to become curious about how they became zombies. Eventually, Kotaro is going to have to answer some questions, like why he choose those girls, mostly why he choose Sakura and Tae.

I wonder if that "maybe zombies absorb things quickly" line was a hint, since all of the zombies seemed to soak up the headbanger, screamo atmosphere immediately, Sakura's emptyish head seemed to be full of rap battlin' after casual exposure and Tae now actually seems to sing and follow choreography well enough despite still being mostly brain-dead.
Edit: Ai's "Aren't bodies cremated in Japan?" line makes me wonder if someone hasn't been planning this and collecting pretty corpses since the early 80's. The suggestion probably doesn't count for Yugiri, since funerary cremation was actually pretty controversial in Japan until the end of the 19th century because of lingering Confucian values.
I suppose this ups the possibility that it was all Tae's idea before she died, and Kotaro is just carrying it out.

There's something about this show that craves within me to rewatch all previous episodes over and over due that the crazy, comedy antics are just too fun and entertaining.
As for as the fourth episode went, going through the idol performances as Kotaro got a sponsor for the group was routine but what followed next became a memorable night for the idol undead.
The atmosphere and mood with the camera rolling and panning around those cold, deserted hallways and corridors in the hotel was so delightfully creepy and made me to reminisce on similar scenes as shown in The Shining (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shining_(film)) and Ju-On (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ju-On:_The_Curse). In fact, maybe this episode was designed to parody those types of films, because that poor sponsor lady got freaked out by our creepy-cute, zombie, idol girls.
I do not know who got frightened the most, that woman or our heroines?
Sakura, accidentally, popping off her head at the onsen and got washed away right before the lady took her bath was such a guilty pleasure.
And, what not forget about Saki and Junko rising literally out of the onsen's depths in a possible tribute to the Creature of the Black Lagoon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creature_from_the_Black_Lagoon). That shot was just LMAO entertaining and comedy non-stop.

Mamoru Miyano has this quality to bring forth a character's, no matter how serious looking or personality wise, eccentricity over the top in order to make them outlandish but appealing at the same time and within good taste before the audience.
Trust me, since right now I'm marathoning Tokyo Ghoul :re, and when Shuu Tsukiyama loses it onscreen, having Miyano-san as his seiyuu, adds such a delightful touch into the character's personality.
Since they brought the same question again in the current episode and gave a bit of serious thought on the subject, then that means it will no longer stay as an in-joke for the show, and Kotaro, eventually, will have to disclose what he did to resurrect the girls.
In addition, I also did my research and, indeed, right after WWII cremation eventually became mainstream acceptable to Japanese society, and since then has proven to be cost efficient and clean to cremate the bodies.
As for Tae being behind Kotaro's scheme, I guess I should remain open-minded to that possibility. After all, up to this point in the show she hasn't recovered her consciousness and nothing is known about her background. Nevertheless, I'm still keeping crossed my fingers that she just remains just your everyday, normal zombie all the way to the end.
I'd not be surprises if the Legendary Yamada Tae is a Legendary NEET.

I was just making the suggestion because of the apparent ages and dates. If Kotaro isn't an ageless undead or just older than he looks then he probably wouldn't be old enough to be stealing bodies from funeral homes in 1983, when Junko died. However, by official stats Tae died at age 29 (one of the few things we know of her) and we don't know when she died, so she could feasibly have been an adult in the 1980s.

if anyone has been rewatching zombieland saga clips on youtube, and if you dislike or cant handle extremely dark, depressing animes, be careful if youtube ends up featuring Shiki in your recommendations. i guess because i was rewatching zombieland saga clips on youtube, youtube recommended shiki, which also features deceased people being brought back to life. Shiki is a vampire horror anime.
Very good, but a completely different genre from Zombie Land Saga.

^a shared plot point between the two is that they both involve dead people being brought back to life(in shiki, as vampires rather than zombies), which i assume is why youtube had recommended it to me since i was watching zombieland. its because of that similarity that i keep getting reminded of shiki while watching zombieland. im not saying shiki is a bad anime, i just cant handle dark, depressing shows. and the clip is saw happened to be one of the darkest, saddest point in the show.
i made that post earlier because i needed to vent.

Happy Halloween.
That is the point. Both shows are inversely opposite to each other since Shiki is dark and horror whereas Zombieland Saga is dark and comical.
The latter show parodies many tropes from horror for entertaining purposes and getting a LMAO reaction from the audience.

I simply avoid series like Shiki not because i think such series are bad, but because i know watching such series are going to make feel all sad and depressed afterwards. Furthermore, such series can later ruin my enjoyment of other, more light hearted series. Just to clarify, when i viewed shiki on youtube, i knew absolutely nothing about that anime, and i was curious because i never seen it before. Greatly regretted it afterwards.
After a stressful day of REALITY, I want to watch series like zombieland saga to laugh and de-stress myself.

Legendary Junko is the idol that ignited the idol boom of the early 80s according to the first episode. I took it to mean she was crazy popular 30-40 years ago...

That's more like it! I wanted to say this show does best when it goes away from being about idols... but after remembering all the weird stuff I've been told actual idols have to do, a more proper way to put it would be it goes away from being about the kirakira and dokidoki side of idols. Want to get to a stage? Crawl through the mud! Literally.
Jokes from beginning to end, Saki and Tae being awesome, and Sakura being the anti-protagonist. What else can you ask? Well, apparently things will get ugly next episode, but at least for reasons other than being idol is hard (unless Junko has some skeletons in her closet), so I want to see where it goes.

I did not expect we'd actually see how the girls, or at least some of them, actually died, even if Another, of all series, gave a better depiction of getting struck by lightning. Still a damn good reason to be scared of them, though. Of course, seeing the difference in times between Junko and Ai finally being put to use was great, and even a bit enlightening for those interested in idols, and of course, Saki and Sakura still being the heart and soul of the series is adorable. Never thought we would get so much out of Saki and I'm loving it.
Little comedy this time, but we got to learn more about Ai and Junko's previous lives, how they died, and how their philosophies are different. It was quite interesting. Quite the spectacular way Ai went out, but she doesn't want to be remembered only for that.

Damn, what a way to die! Though it seems her death overshadows her whole Idol career which is no wonder. I mean how many Idols died on the stage, stroke down by lighting before ten thousands of fans, burned to a crisp, still standing with the hand towards the heaven, your voice gone as the thunder of the lighting clams down~
If there was any videotape of that I bet that thing was watched millions of times. And people probably even say ten years later that they had been there when Ai died due lighting on stage.

A friend pointed out that in earlier episodes Junko has a big fear of heights. might be natural but willing to bet since she flew before she died, much like Ai she has a fear related to her death now too. I mean you'd have to be crazy not to be afraid of heights after plummeting from the sky in a metal death container and dying in a fiery crash.

While this should be dramatic episode
I can't help but call Ai death a bullshit
That stadium wasn't a fully open area there was roof and other things that higher than her
And lightning just avoid all that and strike her?
Wow, if that could truly possible then it was real a bad luck
And I now understand Ai drive
Who gonna want to remember because some accident, not her true skill and fame
Wow, if that could truly possible then it was real a bad luck
All the girls died on the "unluckiest day" of the Japanese calendar (think Friday 13, but not always a Friday and not always 13, but similar concept).
4th Dimension

Eh. She got SMOTE out away from the stage in the open. It might be the only place that was out of the protective blanked of the surrounding stage metal. And in the end no lightning rod is 100% effective, and can't prevent rangom flukes of a conducting path being found past it.
But MAN that's one way to go. You'd have to fight a dragon on stage for it to be more metal :D
Also I feel, if we are going by the sample of these two, they all might have died in a way that was legendary at least in Saga. The other one died in a planecrash while flying to it, meaning a lot of Saga people died too.
Oh and I noticed one thing that I appreciate. There isn't any unnecessary Yuri bait.* Kinda refreshing given the lowest common denominator baiting most shows go for.
* No, I'm not saying there is no place for lesbian relationships. But more that it's tiring where every show panders to people by baiting them, but never doing anything with their Yuri bait. Here instead they are just girls. Not a bunch of characters that are supposed to be shipped.

Goddamn! So Ai died in a Michael Jackson fashion by a big spark of lightning.
I guess this is a Pt.1 and 2 with "Because it's Sentemental Saga" and "Because it's Zombiemental SAGA"
It looks like Yugiri got decapitated in the past, but I'm worried for the worse for what happened to Lily
The show has ended the first half and reached the halfway point, meaning an episode full with drama introspection on the characters, which in case both Junko and Ai became the focus.
The parallels drawn between those two couldn't be more polar opposite in terms of performing duties as an idol.
In one extreme, Junko cannot come to terms with the changing times, unlike Yugiri, preventing her from adapting to the duties, conventions, and mannerisms that the present-day idol industry is running.
Literally, from shaking hands to have her pictures taken alongside the fans were unfathomable and unthinkable activities to idols back at the time when Junko was alive.
Furthermore, she felt further discouraged to continue with Franchouchou when learned from Ai that in the present times idols don't mind much making small mistakes in their performances as long as their audiences have fun, enjoy the show, and interact with their idols whereas Junko worked in said industry in an era when idols were more conscious with every tiny detail on their performances in order to deliver the perfect show that was meant to be pleasing and fulfilling for the audience.
On the other extreme, because of her untimely and brutal death, Junko cannot let go off the past due to feeling unfulfilled that her career as an idol ended abruptly just when she was beginning to rise to stardom, and the manner of her death left her with quite an unsavory legacy that she will be both associated and remembered for.

I want to go back to episode five discussion for a tiny break just before the seventh one airs this week due that I forgot to cover it two weeks ago.
This one is gold hilarious, as they much parody commercials for a local franchise as well as regional sports competitions in Saga, a.k.a. Gatalympics.
Before watching this episode, I gave myself the chance to view the real-life commercial to Drive-In Tori, and, in comparison to the episode, the staff nailed every detail in it for the anime.
Tae delivered her best, freaky zombie antics the most particularly when she attempted to bite at Cocco-san several times throughout the CM rehearsals, her cock-a-doodle cry, and she literally tearing herself apart at the climax of the Gatalympics, mud swing competition for LMAO effects.
Of course, her cock-a-doodle towards the end was such a nice bird, as Kotaro put it.

I swear, this show has a funny gimmick about cars hitting characters. Looks like we got Junko trying to overcome her fear. That performance under the rain is quite something...
Nice episode. That song is also pretty catchy too. Being a zombie also helped that they didn't die again. I love how the producers managed to make that performance look unique afterwards. Well done girls!
And they say lightning doesn't strike twice.
Kotaro can do more than just yell at his zombies, after all. I was surprised it was him of all people who got Junko out of her funk. Damn good speech to boot.

The gag with getting hit by trucks never ever gets old, Lily's heart literally popping out of her chest, and the way they utilized getting hit by lightning to their advantage and turning their single into an autotuned version is all sorts of funny and clever. Damn, the concert is awesome. Its amazing how Kotaro can change the mood so fast.
That spraying moment, then from, "Its not necessary" to "MUUUUSIICCCC!!". Should've expected from Mamoru Miyano who's been playing madman lately.
:D
Using the power of lightning to have auto-tune voice (and shooting laser from hand).
The auto-tune is terrible but it seems to be done in purpose, definitely looking forward the clean ver. from the OST.
LOL. Sakura feeling deja vu, making us speculated its Koutarou who responsible to her accident.
It seems Tae slowly gaining consciousness--- wandering around, dance a bit lifeless just like a zombie should be.

that manager is the shows biggest mystery so far and we know he's behind the girls resurrection but why?
In a show that has zombie getting lightning-struck and gaining autotune and laser powers does the why really that matter much anymore? :heh:
At the end it will be kind of nice footnote thing to to know, but the show live without ever giving any answer to these questions.
If you told me 20 years ago that 2 zombies would be ranked among the top 10 best anime girls of a given season, I would be laughing at you. Especially one is barely conscious and let out nothing but zombie groans.

More like, death due first facial hair, has it ever been done before?
Also that farewell song, god, it was beautiful, I really loved this part after Lily-chan's speech about how she loves TV and will work hard to be lots on it to make you smile and that she loves you:
"The world I had with you
and the future I'll be missing you
and even if we're now far apart
the courage you gave me will be my pride as I go on
so please, always, watch over me!"
So gosh-darn beautiful, chocking on my own tears, damn it. ;A;

Anybody else heard that Zombielands had the most preorders outta this season even outdoing SSSS.Gridman and SAO and others? Seems Japan really wants Zombie Idols. Also AixJunko got HUGE after that last episode. Can't wait for Saki's episode next time with all her grown-up friends while she is still stuck in her teenage body.
Still, biggest issue remains: LILY-CHAN IS A TRAP???
I understood as soon as her father called her Masao, but I wasn't ready for what followed. And here we thought she had a heart disease or something :heh:
It was in a really weird way, but her wish was granted. She'll never become a butch man like her father. And given how easily body parts come off in this show, she can easily get rid of her dick, too. If she hasn't done so already.
This episode managed to be both silly and really touching. I wish Lily could have told her father the truth, but he was at least able to find some peace thanks to her song.

Wasn't expecting this show to touch on a topic like that, but I guess this series is full of surprises.

Man, that was a pretty good... wait, what? Why is everyone saying Lily is... oh, ok. I see... now, that I didn't expect. Then again, I didn't expect that death scene either. Pretty much agree it was a sweet episode, though for some reasonit felt a bit filler-y at the beginning, but then again, we're getting a continuation in the whole "actually exploring how the girls died" thing, and that's enough for me, especvially now we got a Saki episode confirmed for next week, something I had really been wishing for. Now, if we can get something on either Yugiri or Tae, I can officially say zombieland is doing character episodes better than love live (not having the standard idol plot or characters sure helps). Also, seeing Sakura being team big sis is always cute.
You know, now that I'm checking the talk about it, Kotarou teasing Lily about the star "growing bigger" makes a hell of a lot more sense now.
I think they should have at least offered some hints that Lily was a boy prior to this epi.

No matter the circumstance, Lily will always be Lily to me! That was a heartwarming episode for sure. Though, Lily's death was pretty funny.
Great idea, just like Zombieland Saga itself.
Zombie Trap Idol is something, even more with Lily had good father that he himself felt being trap is an issue instead of keep going on with it like nothing happened.
As we explore other members death, IIRC its Yugiri and Tae that not explained yet?
While Yugiri can be easily guessed (maybe with some kind of stupid moment involved as well), that animation gif posted by James made me wonder if Tae, considering her clothes, is actually someone illiterate from distant past of Saga perfecture, similar to Yugiri.

Knowing that Yuugiri was from the Bakumatsu period, she either pissed off someone from the Emperor faction or the Shogunate, perhaps even the Shinsengumi.

If that were the case then given her "default" clothes i would guess she was a Amakusa Catholic nun who was somehow involved in the Shimabara Rebellion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimabara_Rebellion). From what I gather, no. The contested line is Saki's "who cares what junk she has", a more literal translation is apparently "who cares what she has attached" but the meaning is obviously the same (also, in context, not much else would make sense - they're obviously talking about Lily being a boy, Saki's shrugging it off, and says it in a way that makes Junko flustered). The choice to translate as 'junk' is probably because of the pun with Junko, but same difference.

She's trans, I dont understand why this is difficult to understand. Crunchy isn't adding anything to the translation, in fact some of the translated lines actually understate the issue.
When talking with Sakura about who Masao was the more accurate translation would be "The name that I abandoned" instead of what crunchy used "My old name", there is finality in Lily's intent in that line, which just makes it more obvious when Saki is making fun of her because of it and when Kotaro emphasizes it.
When her father is looking at her picture he specifically says "That girl cant be Masao" he could have used a more gender neutral pronoun like he did when speaking to her about the child he failed. But he didn't, he's affirming her choice.
Her voice actress in a recent interview states "She's not Masao anymore, she's Lily" and about how the show is about the friendship between girls. Cant get any clearer than that other than the director explicitly saying that she's trans. And even then I'm guessing people will just claim death of the author to try to fit their world views

Maybe people interpret "trans" as meaning someone who has actually had a sex change operation, which obviously isn't the case here, and that's what they're denying? 'cos otherwise it doesn't make much sense, call it as you want, it's clear that she's living as a girl, that's her whole point. That's why the thing that killed her was seeing a beard hair, she realised she was hitting puberty and even though she wanted to deny being male she would actually start to change in ways that would make it impossible for her to hide it.

Well thats certainly obvious that she hasn't had an op, not like its needed a whole lot anymore though :heh:
I'd understand the "its just crossdressing" if the shows text made it explicit. Rui from gatchaman is a case where the shows text actually contradicts the intent of people trying to fit him as transgendered. There is no distress caused by his sex, he often times dresses up like a boy, the enlightened buddah like character introduces him as a boy. Its far more likely that he's the typical "otokonoko" trope of a guy that likes to dress up like a girl and has no desire to actually be a girl.
Thats not the case with Lily at all.
I wonder how Tae died? We've gotten some pretty wild deaths, and the buildup is only adding to my anticipation. Seeing how they've handled the ones we've seen so far, I don't know what to expect.
All the girls have had a design that matches their deaths in some way. Burnt skin covered in bandages for Ai. Ripped to pieces and patched up with probably different people skin/body parts for Junko. Heart popping out for Lily because of overworked and shock. We know Sakura died from the car crash and her head injury could explain the amnesia. Saki probably died from a motorcycle accident given her facial scar as well. Yugiri got beheaded given her neck scar, and she already mentioned how samurai would test their swords on innocent civilians. Tae's all banged up and we really cant infer much do to her injuries. Maybe her clothing is a better descriptor? She uses habits as casual clothing, ripped apart do to her tendencies of putting on clothing. And she sleeps in what looks like a prisoners outfit. She also by far the oldest of the group, being almost 30 compared to the girls still being teens (Yes even Yugiri is only 19)

Yes, the very definition of trans.
Trans people don't necessarily require an op. Sometimes the most they do is take hormone therapy. And sometimes all they do is speak to a therapist on the regular. But when it comes down to it, what makes them trans is that they identify as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth.

Yeah, I have a feeling they are related somehow.
There is a very good chance Kotaro killed Sakura, or at least thats what the show wants us to believe (the Saga license plate, the van being basically the same, Junko's dejavu).
But thats not necessarily the case. If Kotaro and Tae were together, or knew each other then the person that might have killed Sakura could actually be Tae. The prison outfit might be symbolic in that Tae went to prison because of that. The van might have been inherited by Kotaro afterwards.
The show is way more clever than it has the right to be. There's a ton of hints riddled through the scenes, I'm sure if they ever decide to explain who Tae really is it'll make complete sense.

Indeed.
I think some people thought that because she was sending a letter to Tokyo that she was from Tokyo. But if you were a girl who wanted to become an idol, normally moving to Tokyo would be the first step so there's nothing odd in sending such a letter.
Also... the truck that killed her had Saga license plates...

:D
IMO their default clothing is how audience could guess from which era they are, like how Junko wore serafuku compare to Sakura and Ai who wore blazers. Aside that, yeah, its obvious now that their scar / iconic feat (as if heart jumping out from chest) is telling the cause of their death.
So far only Yuugiri and Tae wore different clothes on the group, theirs definitely not that kind of 90-ish clothes like others; I wonder if Kotaro gave them clothes fitting standard clothes of each era they came from so he can identified it better. Looking at Tae having bandage all over her body with that kind of clothes does make me wonder if she experienced something terrible enough it limiting her ability to think.
