View Full Version : Licensed GTO-Great Teacher Onizuka Discussion
Well, I went through 15 pages in the forum without finding a GTO thread, which means that either it was discussed a loooooong time ago, or that it wasn't discussed, period.
I read the manga and I was literally blown away. From the first page where we get to see the protagonists resume, to the awesome climactic end, this title is gripping, exciting, and at times laugh-out-loud funny!
What I especially liked was that it doesn't pull any punches. It shows society (at least Japanese Society) the way it is. The youths and the adults are all facing very real problems. What I liked even more was Onizuka's approach to solving those problems.
Speaking of Onizuka, I have to say that he is one of the best male characters out there, a street-smart lech with an attitude, impressive martial arts skills and a really big heart. His personality itself is a really necessary shock to system and it ends up improving many of his students lives.
Not that the rest of the cast are not worth mentioning. From the Bullied Yushikawara, to the ultra-conservative and overconscious principal Uchiyamada, to Miyubi, the school b*tch, all of the people in GTO are real, or at least, they feel real. Even the extreme cases, perverted teachers that peep in bathrooms, manically obsessed individuals and stalkers are realistically portraied.
The art of the manga is exceptional as well, even though definitely not manga-like in the traditional sense. The characters very often have small eyes, and there are lots of ehmm... unnessecary details. In fact detail is what characterises the artwork through out.
Anyone else picking up this great title?
I thought the ending of the manga was rather bland. I'm a major fan of everything before volume 15, though. And Shonan Jun'ai Gumi is a great delinquent manga... that reminds me, I still need to finish reading that... gotta find the CD...
Anyway, yeah, I was pretty disappointed with the ending. "He can't be dead, you wouldn't kill this guy even if you killed him". I was REALLY hoping for him to die. That would have been my ideal ending. Instead they had the happy end... happy is really really over-rated. I mean, Onizuka deserves an extremely anti-climactic death to counterbalance all of the shit he manages to survive doing.
it's "Yoshikawa" and "Miyabi" actually :)
Yes, Onizuka is awesomeness incarnate, Urumi is one of my favorites :)
GTO is one of my all time favorites. Some of the completely off the wall stuff he pulls is just a riot.
While some of the stuff is certainly not anything even close to politically correct, I tend to recommend this manga to most folks who ask me for a good series to read. Anything that can make me laugh so hard so often deserves a good read. :)
What I especially liked was that it doesn't pull any punches. It shows society (at least Japanese Society) the way it is.

Oh wow, I didn't even see that... I feel so silly. Allow me to comment on that one as well.
Dontcha just hate it when the Yakuza kidnap you and you have to be saved by your genius ex-biker teacher who then goes and makes a perfect score on the hardest national test in the nation with 2 bullet wounds in his gut? It's happened to me like twice, and it just ruined my day both times. I think I'll go and enjoy a whore with my corrupt police officer friend who wants to sell evidence locker crack with me then talk in french to the genius girl who hates the world because her father was used for scientific experimentation.
GTO's about as realistic as SaiKano. Ie, completely not realistic.
I'm also a major GTO fzn, and I realy like this serie although it does slightly go down in quality toward the end. Still, it's one of my favorit titles and has some realy amazing parts.
And I'd tend to agree with lensman on the point that GTO does show japanese society pretty well with it's short commings and all. Of course there are some exageration and stuff, but it doesn't take a genius to take apart truth from exageration to get the overall picture. All in all, GTO taugh me more about current japanese culture than any other book/article/manga I have ever read. (and before I get stupid comments, I lived there for 3 month within a japanese family, so I do have first hand experience to compare this info to)

that situation is one of the exaggerations
certain characters are very realistic, especially Uchiyamada and his family, Ryuji, Fujiyoshi, Miyabi, Anko, and Noboru (it's rare to see the kind of relationship that Anko and Noboru have pre-Okinawa (i.e., before the Okinawa trip) since not many people like to talk about it, but the fact is there ARE girls who terrorize boys and get away with it)
what makes GTO unrealistic is that it takes characters with a lot of problems and puts them into situations that could never happen in real life.
But, a lot of people don't pay attention to things that are "normal", what series like GTO suffer from towards the end is the idea begins to get old, and you run out of characters to develop. Plus, series like GTO, at least from my perspective, should not have a definite ending, otherwise it ruins the feel of the whole shebang

...series like GTO, at least from my perspective, should not have a definite ending, otherwise it ruins the feel of the whole shebangThat seems kinda cruel, the big quest is for onizuka to get rid of his virginity innit... can't really see the poor guy going around like that forever and ever...
As far as the thing going on too long, that's the fate of any super-popular manga. Then again, American comics run even longer, and often pay even less attention to the passing of time.

the big quest is for him to become a great teacher
after winning over one of the biggest class of teacher haters, TWO disgruntled administrators, and even aiding in making an idol out of the slowest girl in his class, i think he's accomplished that.
The only characters GTO never fully develops are Mayu and Ageha, even though it's hinted at about 3 times throughout the series
well, if you want a real ending just imagine the stuff in the last two episodes of the anime happening after vol. 25, even though there would be about a dozen inconsistancies...
the big quest is for him to become a great teacher Uh no... the manga's quest is for him to become a great teacher. His own personal quest is to get a loli to blow and get him off everyday. The great teacher quest was for him only a diversion to get his mind off his frustrations on his inability to fulfill his lifequest. :heh: And that is no joke.

This is definately my most favorite manga ever. Insane, overblown, ridiculous, exagerrated nonsense, blending seemlessly with perfect sensible, relatable, understandable, rational drama. ...or something like that. Really, I've gotten more info on life thanks to the philosophical undertones of this series than I have from almost anything else I've ever read. As my friends and I say, GTO is a Psychotically Perverted Noodle Soup for the Soul. Remember the "I'd just squeeze their Tits" lecture to Azusa in Okinawa? Enough said.
GTO is as realistic as SaiKano?
Sure there are some REALLY extreme situations in GTO, but unlike SaiKano, there is a major difference... Great Teacher Onizuka FEELS real. You get the feeling that Onizuka is a real guy, that the guys and girls around him are real people and that it could actually happen to you.
OK, so not all of us have a corrupt cop friend, or a black belt in karate, or connections to the yakuza, but that is part of the point is GTO: Putting the most unlikely of individuals (Onizuka) in the most unlikely of positions (a Teacher). Onizuka's approach to the problems is unique and funny... but those problems are very real, and, unfortunately, very common.
The manga definitely has a realistic feel to it... You get the feeling that it could happen somewhere, somehow.

Going beyond the indepth analysis of its realism, meaning etc etc
I just wanted to say it was just so much fun to read. I loved every minute of reading every page.
I guess you are right. To ponder on the realism of GTO is to miss the point...
That this is a very well written and hilarious manga.

well, shit happens. OF course none of this shite ever really does happen, but thats what keeps you inderested innit?
gto is my favorite, possibly on par with naruto, though i find it hard to compare the two on the same level.

Yup GTO manga is even better than the anime. I recently started reading it and now I find myself running towards the manga store on a daily basis :heh:
Basically Onizuka hasn't changed compared to the anime but he does even more crazy stuff, trashes a certain Cressna even more :heh: and is just plain coooooooool :)
:topicoff:
PS On a side note, Saikano is actually very realistic, if you neglect Chise "condition" . She could've been sick instead of being "you know what" . If you see it that way, all that remains is an anime about a couple which isn't certain about their love, and see their world destroyed around them. Saikano is about dealing with the problems young couples find when faced with an unusual situation. Chise's "condition" just strengthens that feeling a thousand times. Oh and the Saikano manga is even more emotional and beautifully drawn

Well I'm a BIG fan of GTO, maybe because it was my first anime serie I watched but I still like, have rewatched it many times, bought the anime DVD's and now reading manga.
I have readed from 1-18 and waiting for more... In my country I can't buy all the mangas, they have only from 1-19 here... :( (more will come but later and I'm ADDICTED!)
Well it's sad to see that Onizuka is virgin still :(
And I think the manga has one of the world pervert-minded characters, Sakurai (that english teacher, some people messes him with the chairwoman).

the anime downplays just how perverted Sakurai really is (and neither the anime nor the manga show more than a couple scenes of Uchiyamada being perverted, and it's ALWAYS on the train...wonder why?) of course they also change his name to Sakurada, so he could be a completely different character (like the anime nurse and manga nurse...Moritaka is better than Kadena though, even if she doesn't have the street racer past)
GTO 20 will be coming out in the states in late august-early september!

there are also 2 prequels i am not sure if they are licensed:
1- BAD company 1 volume
2- shounan jun'ai gumi, 15 volumes
cool thanx alot guys.
2 prequels? you sure about this? prequels of GTO?
also, do you guys know a site that has information on manga (like how many volumes there are of the manga etc) i already know dailymanga.net and mangajouhou but they arent really good for info like that.
I don' know much about bad compagny but I can confirm that Shonan Junai Gumi is indeed a prequel to GTO (it was written before it too). The graphic style (at least in the early volumes) is much cruder than in GTO and the humour is much more girl/fight oriented.
I have no idea as to the exact number of volumes in it but at least 20 or so (the current japanese edition is a readition where each volume contains the amount of pages from 2 regular volumes and I remember seeing at least 10 of these in a shop)...

and heres the proof for bad company http://img87.exs.cx/img87/1096/bc_cover.jpg
Shounan Jun'ai gumi is the story of how Ryuji and Onizuka met (and a lot about Onizuka's "Shounan Days" he refers to a lot in the GTO manga) or maybe that was bad company

i don't know where i read this so i can't confirm it but i heard that bad company was only a special volume to the shounan junai gumi, which was later sold as it's own name
bad company had how onizuka and ryuji met while shounan junai gumi had most of thier adventure
oh i see.
so it was a prequel (not bad company, the other one) written before the actual GTO manga? so it is part of GTO i guess. is it licensed?

so... snoopy or anyone else who's read til the end of the manga - do Fuyutski (however u spell it) and Onizuka finally confess their feelings for each other, or is it more like the "life goes on" ending... i spose the whole point of the story was that Onizuka was a great teacher, and the anime really did that fantastically, i was really satisfied with the anime ending.
still... do they make it as a couple by the end of the manga? (i'm not talking about Onizuka losing his virginity or whatever, just if they get together:P) can someone maybe tell me what happens to the rest of the characters - dang they're all so good :D so please please reply even tho this is like 4 months after the last person lol...

GTO is one of the greatest manga I've ever skimmed. I sometimes consider buyin it. (And that means it's really good. normally I think its a waste of money)

Nope.
It's pretty much the same for Onizuka's other relationships in the manga as well. For example, he and Murai's mom have a friendly relationship with one another and surprisingly, they do get along. But no. None of them ever crosses the line. The same goes for his relationship with Fuyutsuki even though it's apparent that the latter has feelings for the other. (In fact, Fuyutsuki has more roles given to her in the anime--partly because of the changes done to Naoko's character. )
It's almost as if Onizuka's being professional about it...which is hard to believe. :D
And from what've heard, even the relationships of the entire crew aren't completely addressed--such as Yoshikawa and Anko or Murai and that tall girl. (forgot the name..) Such things seem to be only featured in their corresponding story arcs and that's it. The rest is up to the reader. Hopefully, someone can verify this just to be sure.
With regard to the ending of the manga--I think it's just as well that it remains open-ended. I figured that the author wants to keep it open just in case if he wants to use the character again for another story.
And indeed, that much was implied in the anime version. In one interview for instance, he wondered what it would be like for Onizuka to teach in a high school in the US. I think Tohru Fujisawa was just joking around when he said that, but it also seemed that he wants to keep Onizuka free for other ideas.
What I really don't like about GTO was how it's sometimes trying to be what it's not.
I mean the way the author kept arranging Onizuka to be the dispenser of wisdom at the end of each bratty kid event, and how the manga referred more than once to the shortcomings of the Japanese educational system; they gave me the impression that the author was seriously trying to construct a social commentary - and that a street-wise, ex-delinquent teacher is his answer to those shortcomings.
It's like everytime a series of Onizuka's misbehaviours was followed by at least 4-5 pages of supposedly serious stuff, and that really doesn't work, because I don't know whether to continue reading in a critical or tongue-in-cheek attitude.
That said, GTO was an absolutely hilarious manga, and it used many techniques which are quite innovative and fun to watch (the first-person perspectives that's used everytime Onizuka met his cop friend was a perfect match for the comic undertone).
I finished GTO a long long time ago... then downloaded Live Action and the drama twist of GTO was also very very good. However... I wasnt very satified with the anime simply because the anime was short ended as in it ended early in the manga. With a differen ttype of ending (him going to USA). However I was wondering what happened in the real manga. Is there any links out there?
Yah, Amazon.com has all that's been done so far.

Does anyone know what was with Mayu and the pills things? What was he about to say at the end? And what did he want to talk to Kikchi about and disappear for a week together?
No one will ever know. They cutted out/never published Mayu and Kikuchi's arc that deals with Mayu's tragic past. We can only spectate what happened back then.
Only clues we know was: He had to take pills to keep himself under control after the event, Kikuchi was involved, he lost trust over teachers/school because of it, it was someone or a group of people since he mentioned going after them, and that it involves his dream/desire/whatever to be an idol.
I'm reading GTO and i think i skipped some parts.. During the Mayo?? arc ( the blonde guy thats rich) he was taking those pills for anxiousness or nervousness and I never saw them mention the reason for it. Although the nurse asked why?? And then afterwards Mayo took Kikukichi because he needed some help, was it explained that they did? It showed them trying to hack into a site to get revenge, but then they went on the site about Myiabi and then it was never mentioned, or i missed it.

quick question
i finished watching the anime but i want to know the rest of the story, which is why i'm now reading the manga. i planned on starting to read from the end of the school trip to that beach but right away there was an arch that wasn't in the anime (that rich mayu guy or whatever)
did the anime skip a lot of archs or did it follow the manga pretty well? i don't want to read 13 volumes nothing new happens.
The anime didn't really skip that many arcs. It's just that in the anime, some characters like Mayu, Ai, etc weren't shown in the anime. The anime actually followed the manga quite faithfully up until the last two episodes. The ending between the two (and Miyabi's problem) differed between manga and anime, partly because the anime took on a more serious tone than the manga.
But don't worry, from the manga beach trip onwards, pretty much everything is different from the anime. So read on, young adventurer.

GTO ending didn't disappoint me that much
but still what im thinking, and still am
Who the hell he choosed to marry i mean if it continued ? the blond girl (i forgot her name damn) Kanzaki Urumi i think XD , or that boring teacher ;o (fukuda) , or she went to get the old hag! :o
my best guess is urumi o.o
about the realistic thing, i think the authors tried to kill every student and onizuka in every situation that happened lol they are suicidial ? >_<

Loved both the anime and manga. The ending of the anime was great, leaving all the missing arcs behind and shit.
While I just started the manga after the Okinawa arc, it was a brand new adventure to re-live the Onizuka experience again. The Mayu Arc, the Angels Arc, all of them were great, I was hoping for more.
The manga also had a much more deeper relationship between Onizuka and Urumi, cause I always imagined something would make them closer. Oh well, a terrific ending for the manga.

it has nothing to do with GTO other than the female lead looks so much like Toroko it's frightening
Anyone pick up Shonan Junai Gumi "GTO the early years"? So far i like it...much more crude humor with onizuka and ryuji. Can't wait till volume 2 comes out later in the year.
actually yeah, just grabbed that the other day. It's pretty funny. I like it so far too! With the whole thing about his past and such. It's very funny!
Saw the anime recently, loved it overall (didn't care much for the ending), so needed more and tore through the manga aswell. Was great to see more of Uzumi Kanzaki (liked her in the anime and liked her even more after reading the manga, making her my favorite character in GTO) and her somewhat obsessive attachment to Onizuka, shame it ended when it did, some Fuyutsuki/Kanzaki rivalry could have been funny. Throw in Julia for good measure, maybe even Mizuki from the first arc. XD Also too bad some loose ends weren't quite tied up, as already mentioned in this thread by others. But then again, it would've gotten too repetitive to go through the "student making trouble due to some sort of child trauma, onizuka pulling some crazy stunts and straightens him/her out" motions again. Most things were tied up pretty nicely anyway.

Hi, can someone help me answer a question?
Is Aizawa and Fujiyoshi girlfriend and boyfriend now or do they just like each other but keepin' it at that? Also, why would anyone care if they were going out?
To me it seems like a one-sided relationship or at least thats what I got from the manga. That's if they were actually going out though. It doesn't show them really doing anything with each other.
Is Aizawa and Fujiyoshi girlfriend and boyfriend now or do they just like each other but keepin' it at that? Also, why would anyone care if they were going out?
Maybe is the best answer I can give there is one panel where someone, Kikuchi I think (too lazy to go look it up) says something like " So you and Miyabi are....." to Fujiyoshi. It like a few things are left up to the reader.
I don't think they are. They show zero signs of being a couple in the final volume, and Miyabi seems to favor Onizuka more (crying out for him as she falls from the roof, taking a drag on his cigarette at his request, suggesting she'd show her panties if Onizuka asked to Asuza).
Should one interpret it this way, Onizuka unknowingly succeeded in stealing the hearts of all three friends (Miyabi-Urumi-Tomoko), as well as Asuza. Lucky bastard :heh:

I think volume 14 and chapter 104 or 107, somewhere around there.
The anime doesn't hold a candle to the manga, this and shonan junai gume are some of the best examples of orriginal manga out there, Onizuka is a larger than life character but a lot of the stuff is real slice of life Japan giving us a peek at what problems kids in japan face from bullying to issues with status and how they deal with them.
sorry to resurrect an old thread but i felt rather than starting a new one, this option would be better.
anyway as GTO has been my 2nd favourite anime ever since i first saw years ago i've decided its time to get the manga.
I found out that they've started releasing GTO: The early years in english and I was wondering whether i should read this first before GTO (when he's a teacher)?

It's fine to just start with the GTO
Yeah the early years are a completely different storie, nothing related to GTO,but its so funny too lol,i like how Onizuka's friend (keep forgetting his name) approaches a girl when he is hard and she freaks out lol...
Anyways i just wanted to ask about GTO manga, does it have a proper ending ?I mean a conclusive ending or an ending similiar to the anime ?

Eh, it's about half-and-half. Most things are cleared up, most loose ends are tied, but there are plenty of open ended things too. I haven't watched the anime myself, but I've read spoilers, and I have to say that the manga ending is much more satisfying than the anime's.

Does Urumi like Onizuka as well? She is hot lol I am sure if she was 19 Onizuka would have gone oyt with her. But I had a feeling that he really liked Azusa
The manga is more better than the anime (the design character is very goods, its very well drew!) but one point , the end was rushed !i wanted more !!!Me i started the manga first then the anime (he killed the manga) !
There is a reference in the live action movie to Onizuka hooking up with someone (maybe Azusa). As for Urumi it is established pretty clearly in the manga that both her and Tomoko had it bad for Onizuka. Tomoko was especially amusing to watch since her confidante and make up artist is Shinomi who is the girl that chases after him in Shonan Junai Gumi.

No it leaves it open ended really lame so he's still a virgin, then again never liked her character that much Urumi would have been a better match for Onizuka. Plus it would have fulfilled the fantasy/dream that Onizuka said he wanted early on in the manga about marring a high school girl something like that, plus isn't she older the 18 right? and clearly loves him in the manga so it's okay. :heh:
Just wait a few years, then Urumi will be ok for him. However, it seems that despite Onizuka's dirty mind, he does believe in being a teacher and cares for his students, so maybe that's his stance on things.
Four girls are actually after him by the end of the manga. Obvious ones are Azusa, and Urumi. Then there's Tomoko, and one minor character... the daughter of the vice-principal. He also seems to get along well with that guy's mother, probably as friends or maybe something else, but I'm not really sure. The story never really focuses on that one.
From what I heard, the live action drama has more on Onizuka and Azusa. But yes, I also think that Urumi would be a better romantic interest in the manga.
*judo kicks thread*
Shonan 14 Days ch 1 is out. Man, how I missed GTO. The ending was decent, but Onizuka's antics will never get old. Seeing all those familiar faces brought a huge smile to my face (especially Urumi :D).
Oh boy, another Miyabi clone, only with shorter hair? Been there, done that.
The other new girl looks almost like a Julia/Naoko hybrid. Possible new rival for Asuza, this ought to be good :D
And more Cresta antics already, I love it. Haruhi paint job is too good :heh:
I'm hoping the series isn't as short as the title implies. I'd like to see another class trip arc, especially now that Miyabi's reformed.
I am hoping a somebody picks this up as a project. More GTO is a good a thing. I want more Urumi Kanzaki
Any fansub will sub this manga ?
I hope manga-heaven take this...
And looks like Onizuka have new hair? almost bald???

Urumi is cute with her jealousy when Onizuka shows his pervert nature ^^. But it seems his status as a teacher is what keeps him form considering her as a candidate. Maybe as soon as she graduates :P.
So Onizuka got a new series? This' gonna be fun ^^, though I somehow think that the manga already ended nicely(all the students in his class got reformed in the end)
any pics?? does anyone now if tis new serie will come out every week or month?

Woah woah! Whats this about a new series?
Release dates?

Im not quite sure about the anime but the manga is done and over with. It's a great read and a nice comedy. There are some amazing moments in the manga and i wouldn't miss it for the world its one of the worlds most memorable manga.

Uh, the manga was done and over with. It's just been continued. :D
Seriously, have you guys been sleeping on this? Even animenewsnetwork reported it.
Yes, it is a sequel (those who remember the ending will know right away) and it is weekly. The only thing we don't know is how long it'll be, since the title implies it'll be short ('14 Days').
Whatever the case, it's more GTO, so get on it now. Even if the scans aren't out yet.
it´s kinda hard to enjoy the epicness without the scans....
Can´t Eikichi just fulfull his dream of a 16 year old bride finally? And you all know who i mean ;//
Uh, the manga was done and over with. It's just been continued. :D
Seriously? Thats news to me, hehe this is beginning to get interesting again. No matter how short it is i believe i'll enjoy myself again.
Damn Eikichi the best teacher ever XD Too bad that i don't have a teacher like him in school .
Hurray , more Urumi Kanzaki :)
I'll wait for the sub ^^

Hmm, so it really is a side story. The opening with Onizuka escaping the hospital had me fooled since the nurses looked older.
So the series is definitely going to be short-lived, and most of the old cast likely won't appear (maybe a cameo or two?). I hope it could lead to a GTO 2 in the future, but Fujisawa probably won't commit to it.
14 days doing something that even Onizuka won't admit...either he did it to protect someone or the story doesn't have a happy ending. Perhaps the Miyabi clone is the one student Onizuka couldn't save, and thus he vowed to be a better teacher after the ordeal.
Heck, I'm just curious as to why he became a busjacker with dynamite strapped on him. But knowing Onizuka, it probably needs no explanation :heh:
Thanks for the link :) Just watch the chapter !
Hurray ! Onizuka is back and always hilarious XD
So this story will be 14 days in Shonan .
Ahah Urumi , "procreate" ^^
Ayame is cute :) Could be Onizuka's girlfriend :p
Another students to save ! Hope that it'll be not very short !
14 days = 14 chapters or 28 ?
(lol Suzumya Haruhi )
i saw that chap.1 and chap.2 would be 50 pages each its enormous for a weekly shedule

Holy shit a sequel? And I just found out about GTO via onemanga a couple weeks ago. Nice.
On GTO itself. Well, the most consistent message Onizuka always tried to send was 'don't be a victim'. The world doesn't give a shit what you've been through; blaming and hating people will tend to trap you in a "I'm not responsible for my own happiness" mentality, and that is a mistake. Ultimately nobody can help you if you don't help yourself. Not only is that simply an inevitable reality, it is also more satisfying.
As is perhaps clear from the fact that I bothered expositing the moral, I can agree with these general ideas. GTO wasn't mindblowing as if it introduced them to me in the first place, but it was a fairly lucid and well constructed expression of them. Even if I can't say GTO became my favourite manga, it has certainly left a lasting and meaningful impression.
On the characters. Everyone here seems to be rooting for OnizukaxUrumi, but I am ultimately more interested in the very subtle hints of interest from Kikuchi. There are *tons* of obstacles for this pairing, not the least of which seem to include Kikuchi's awareness of some of them, leading to little to no attempts to actually pursue her on his part. However, it is truly the path of overcoming these obstacles that compells me to find this couple interesting.
Urumi and Kikuchi's relationship can basically be summarized by their IQs. They are 200 to 180. Very close, but Urumi is in the end better, so that despite their unique capacity to relate to each other, so far as Kikuchi is defined by his intelligence, he will always be a bit stale or boring to her. They work very well as a team, have a stable friendship centered on their respect for each other's opinions, but ultimately are nothing more.
What makes Onizuka so interesting to Urumi is the fact that he is always unexpected; he is fun through his spontanaeity. There is also the fact that he was the only and became the first adult figure she could trust, but this matter is ultimately something that separates them (that Onizuka is an elder whose role is to guide her). Kikuchi, with his reserved demeaner and quantifying outlook, was the first to identify Onizuka as someone with the potential for that trust and unexpected happiness, but is also to Urumi himself entirely predictable. That's why, in order to become interesting to Urumi, Kikuchi has to step beyond the cool utilization (more like reliance) of his mental ability.
Anyway, I don't expect anything like Kikuchi winning over Urumi's crush on Onizuka in the manga itself. That I spent half of my intro post (edit: shit, quite a bit more than half, actually! >_<) talking about shipping is totally disproportionate. I just wanted to get it out there, though, that there is another side, and it's just as interesting.
Hey. You know it, GTO rocks! (let's go out on that good vibe.)

So Urumi is only 14 and in middles school o_O. Never knew middle school-ers nowadays can do that kind of delinquent acts, thought they were all high school students at the end of GTO :P
Yeah, that's one of the few problems (if not the only ?) of GTO for me, judging from the characters and how everything was going on, I always had a hard time believing they were only in middle-school.
It's like Fujisawa intended them to be in high-school all along and, at the last moment, the editor said "screw it, make it MS" :heh:
AnimeFangirl
2009-06-11, 08:59
I'd like it if something developed between Onizuka and the woman he just met. She seems sweet enough and obviously admires him. Then again if Onizuka ever gets a stable girlfriend the universe might just implode.
And yeah, I always thought the setting and characters were better suited to high school. Japanese middle-schoolers must be something else if the readers find this believable!
Day 2 and Onizuka's already in jail :heh: Miyabi clone sets him up again, no surprise there.
Ayame easily outdoes Azusa in every way, as Onizuka's little fantasy at the beginning proves. Too bad she wasn't introduced in the main story, as she would've made a great rival.
Now we know where the '14 Days' comes from in the title, as Onizuka declares at the end that's how long it'll take for him to do his thing
So, Onizuka SAYS he´ll do it in 14 days´time, but there is no certain guarantee that he WILL be able to do it... hoping for another whooping 50-100 chapters atleast
*daydream*

very unlikely, though I hope so too :P. Well, if they want to make it into long series, they can makes several short stories instead ^^

*daydream*
There's no guarantee that he'll be able to do it, indeed... But then he'd just fail. This story occurs between volumes 19 and 20 of GTO, they can't strech the time period too much.
GTO was the first manga I had ever read. And it is still my favorite. No manga has ever made me laugh or become depressed like this one. I have never felt attached to characters as much as I have to those in GTO. In my opinion, it is the best manga ever created (with Berserk a close second, of course).
And recently, Tohru Fujisawa has announced that he is working on GTO once again. I am estatic.

I have to say Onizuka is the greater character. Love for teaching > love for an airhead. And at least GTO had a coherent ending ;)

Does anybody even read School Rumble any more? I quit after 100 chapters and lol'ed when I heard about the ending.
Lol don't compare Harima with Onizuka .
In my opinion , Harima is very far to become like him and i don't know if a day he will (but i already know that its impossible because the manga is finish and the end was crap XD )
LMAO. Harima isn't even half the man that Onizuka is. If he was, SRZ wouldn't be dead in the water right now :heh:
i´m not saying he´s stronger or more manly, i just mean he´s more EPIC in general. The things he did, how he did them, it was simply pure epic in every way xd.
Onizuka is just a synonym for GAR on this matter.
i´m not saying he´s stronger or more manly, i just mean he´s more EPIC in general.
Even in that regard Onizuka trumps him. Onizuka arm wrestled 99 guys in a row and won, whereas Harima was just a spectator :heh:
I could name a whole laundry list of epic things Onizuka has done, but in the end, he wins out simply because he was able to carry two series just on his character alone. Nobody tuned in to SR just for Harima, they wanted to see him get with Eri. SRZ's early termination was proof of that.
AnimeFangirl
2009-06-22, 04:23
Correction, they wanted to see him get with Yakumo.
Onizuka's an interesting character, but hmm... If I were one of the kids and some adult just barged into my life: "I'm going to open your heart, just wait and see!" I'd be pissed off too. I want to see how much realistic progress he can make in just 14 days.
I don't think that was the case with School Rumble. I'm pretty sure that the most popular pairing was Hairma and Eri, Yakumo and Harima was second in that race. At least thats every poll I've ever seen.
I would a agree Onizuka is a better character; but so are his supporting cast. I think thats part of the reason that he's so great.

I only watched/read SR for Harima though, he was the only awesome thing :///
And Urumi´s right besides Onizuka in the spotlight, atleast in my eyes
A brief comparison : While Onizuka had to actually study and work hard to get there (eventually not needed, but he would have made it anyway) Harima simply wrote his wish on a piece of paper and hanged it out on a pole.
Your argument doesn´t really counterfit what i say, it´s just enhancing the fact that Onizuka is GAR as hell, armwrestling 100 ppl in a row is more GAR than EPIC i believe.

It's good to see Onizuka again, but i hope that we'll have a couple of chapters from their present life and not just from that time ;o
And why the hell did they change Urumi's age to 14 ??She was 16 <_<,did the mangaka forget the ages he's given to his characters,6 years difference(between Onizuka and Urumi ) is nothing they could still get married (My dad is 7 yrs older than my mom ;o).
Read Onizuka's story when he was young . It's hilarious XD and in my opinion more funny than Harima . Well , even the current story its hilarious .
I don't see a default on GTO .
Yeah I've read the young GTO lol,i think the mangaka after taking a break should've just continued the series, instead of coming up with Kamen Teacher.
I'm sure there is no end for Onizuka's troubles,I'd seriously just read the manga for it's comedy and dailfy life (the mangaka never focused on peacefull days, just the troubles one after another).

Yea, that's what make me wonder too. The translation version of old GTO state that most of his students were 16 years old, which is why I thought they were high school students. I don't know if it's mistranslation or deliberately done to avoid minimum age law or something, but the original manga definitely states Urumi to be 14 years in this one.

It bothers me that this guy translated it "RE5" when the manga calls it "Bio 5" and Fujisawa even included a comment that he likes to play Biohazard with his staff after work.
Anyway, Miki is dumb. They could just ignore him for 2 weeks, he'd be gone and then they can go back to doing whatever they want. How hard is that? Guess I know better than to expect logic from a 14 year old.

She's not that serious about getting rid of him anyway. Two things she could do if she was serious:
1. Call Social Welfare or whoever is in charge of the facility and tell them Shiratori brought in her boyfriend and is shacking up with him in front of you guys. That gets rid of Shiratori too, but hey, you can't save 'em all.
2. Accuse him of sexual harassment. Say he grabbed her boobs or peeped on her in the shower or something. That ruins his career for good, but hey, you can't save 'em all.

I didn't think the original was that good anyway, and it certainly wasn't unpredictable. I don't think I even finished reading it, I believe I stopped reading around the Okinawa arc.
It's the setting of the new series that piqued my interest. For some silly, unrealistic reason, I was hoping for a sensitive and respectful treatment of the children at the facility. As Shiratori said, these homes are very important, and a lot of children in such places have social and psychological issues that need to be handled with care. I think Onizuka just waltzing in there with a PS3 and suddenly making everyone happy trivializes the hard work administrators, counsellors and social workers put in every single day, but hey, it's a manga. Gotta feel good, right?
An example: Sakurako's grown up with a violent adult male all her life, now this other violent guy beats up her dad. And that's supposed to make her happy? Somehow that solves all her problems? Isn't that just reinforcing the "Violence is the Best Solution" message? Onizuka didn't even try to reason with the fellow (not that it would have worked, but still), he just went straight to Option B: taunting and insulting him and picking a fight. I'm seeing Sakurako 10 years down the line in a succession of failed relationships to violent deadbeats, but I'll be darned if the manga ever acknowledges this.
In short, it's only been 4 chapters but I'm already taking issue with the sacrificing of legitimate personal issues at the altar of the Super Teacher. Fujisawa set the spin-off at an orphanage not to highlight the problems but just to promote Onizuka as some sort of Messiah who can make years of abuse/neglect vanish in just 14 days, and that flippant treatment is pissing me off. Of course anyone expects serious social commentary from a manga probably deserves to be pissed off, but that's neither here nor there.

I don't even know what to say about this one. Was GTO always this childish? My memory must be fuzzy. *sigh*
Umm, well... yeah, I got nothing. Let's wait for the next chapter.
Seems another fights is coming . Lol whe Onizuka ate the cockroach its remind me the first manga , first volume when he just begans the sensei .
Where are the former friends of Onizuka from Shonan Junai Gumi?

Anybody know when Chapter 7 is gonna be released?
Where are the former friends of Onizuka from Shonan Junai Gumi?
they appeared briefely in the first chapter.
Finally chapter 7 is out .
The girl just wanted to make his dad more careful about her .
Well , easy thing for Onizuka .
Ok chapter 8 is out .(huh no one comments anymore ?)
Well , not very troubled by Miki's sad story .
Typical thing . The dad always works and can't give some moments for his daughter . The mom died and he always go work .
Well , not very outrageous when you look at the firsts story with Kanzaki etc ...

Chapter 9 is out .
Miki have been kidnapped by a strange guy . His father don't bother with the calls .
No chapter next week .

14 year olds are some of the most gullible creatures in the world. This should be fun.
I still wish the focus would be on someone else, not Miki. -_- Ah well.
Yeah , euh , how many days it was in shonan now ? i think its 3 days , don't remember .
Ah , the others miss me ...

Yeah i'm . aah , i see "euh" trick me XD
Where is my beloved Urumi in this sequel? I'm so sad. She and Onizuka totally belong together.
On that note, I think the most interesting kid so far is the girl being abusec. She reminds me of Toroko, and I don't remember any other kids in the original series having abusive parents. Hopefully it ends up being a really interesting arc.

There was that, but it's "Ah , the others miss me ..." that gave you away. You meant to say "I miss the others" but you translated it straight from French (ils me manquent?) so the messed up word order showed you up. I remember that expression used to confuse me so much in French class. :p
Back on topic, I miss Urumi too. My last hope, that Onizuka would develop a new "posse" involving the kids of White Swan, has been sunk by the recent chapters focusing exclusively on Miki. It makes me sad because I've taken a liking to everyone in this spin-off except her. What do you have against me, Fujisawa!? :frustrated:
wait the old kids are gone???? wouldn't that pretty much suck? Onizuka was a great character but his supporting cast is what really brought out his best qualities!!! gah i don't think I could read this spinoff/sequel knowing that urumi, and the entire crew were not back, guess its back to rereading classic gto

If I recall correctly, the current event happnes before the end of GTO(around after the brawl with the psycho math teacher). That's why even Miyabi's not shown in the first chapter.

I guess this means the series is about to wrap up? Mmph.
The male characters all look the same to me now. I'd never have recognized Katsuyuki and especially Tsukai if they hadn't said so. Fujisawa's art style has really changed, and not entirely for the better.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm complaining all the time, but this 14 days isn't doing it for me.

Yeah , even though the design wasn't like GTO , SJG was very great :)
Still surprising that Onizuka still a virgin . Wonder why he didn't do like his friend (the one with his glass in GTO and in SJG , his best friend ) He already have a wife .
AnimeFangirl
2009-09-10, 16:11
Ah, that's another thing that pissed me off about SJG. Teenage boys have nothing but sex on their minds, yes, but treating virginity as some sort of "disease" to be cured was irritating. Not surprising though, since the mentality is very pervasive: A Man Is Not A Virgin (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AManIsNotAVirgin).

Bad Company.
Technically, neither one of those is a prequel (= a sequel that takes place chronologically before the previous story) to GTO as they both came before it. GTO is the sequel.
Bad Company is however a prequel to SJG. :)
(sorry to nitpick, but I always get a little annoyed when people use the term "prequel" wrong.)
^Really? I thought GTO was the original series, lol.
how many chapters do bad company and SJG have?
I'm confused. Wasn't Bad Company a prequel to SJG? If so, why was their former school in SJG an all boys school, but in Bad Company they were classmates with that panty-showing girl?
And man, Onizuka is freakin hilarious, with his blackmail plan backfiring on him! XD

The all boys school that they came from, Kyokuto High, is the high school that they went to after their Junior High which is Hacchu from memory (the district's public middle school #8). Bad Company is set when they're in Junior High at Hacchu which is obviously a mixed school.

EDIT***
WTF? Was Ayumi just friggin raped between chapter 51 and 52? Did that guy put his twang in?! Damn, I really hate rape scenes happening to characters I've taken an affinity to. That really sucked, even if that guy only had a single thrust in, that would REALLY suck I mean DAMN. That was so not entertaining.

Of the 31 volumes or 280 or less chapters, how much is translated as of today?
bandit_legend
2009-09-20, 08:32
Hm? I don't think Ayumi ever got raped. I just had a look at that part and looks like Ryuji came just in the nick of time.
So far Tokyopop have published up to chapter 179 deluxe vol 10 (standard tankouban vol 20), and Illuminati Manga are up to chapter 80 or something like that.

Damn, I really hate rape scenes happening to characters I've taken an affinity to.
There are a couple more rapes in the series and yeah, they're not cool. What's worse is later on the Onibaku become sorta-friends with the rapists too, like nothing ever happened. Takezawa I kinda understand because Onizuka probably doesn't know, but Akutsu? WTF?
bandit_legend
2009-09-20, 20:59
I know it doesn't make what he did in the past right, but when Akutsu returns you can see that he feels guilty about it. He tries to do what he can, but you can also see he realises that nothing he'll ever do can make it right either.
An example of this is not only how he saved Nagisa from being raped by Joey's followers, but then how he promptly left when the Onibaku returned as if what he just did was the least he could do, and didn't expect any thanks for it. His general aloofness after his return tells me that he realises he can't be forgiven so easily also.
You can see how he's now totally against violence towards women in the latest 14 Chapter in fact, where he refers to these kidnappers as if they're scum.
Also I don't think Onizuka ever became friends with him as such. It's not like they started hanging out like Fumiya and Ryuji. They just stopped being enemies.
So far Tokyopop have published up to chapter 179 deluxe vol 10 (standard tankouban vol 20), and Illuminati Manga are up to chapter 80 or something like that.
Right now I'm thinking of stopping reading this for a while, I don't like waiting for new releases of chapters since I want to read so many chapters in one go. Looks like I have to wait for years to continue reading from Chapter 53.

Either Fujisawa has lost his touch or the readers in Japan got tired of this arc (I sure did) and he had to end it quickly. I'm still disappointed they "scaled down" Kei into a mere pornographer. Whatever, now that this arc is over I'm expecting better things from the second teacher, and we still don't know the background of the baseball-playing kid so maybe something might come out of that.

Assuming that it's going to be her, seeing Shinomi working alongside Onizuka should be good though, so I'm looking forward to her coming along. 85-90% sure she's going to be the second White swan teacher. ;)
I'm actually more hopeful that she'll turn out to be Saya, but we'll see what happens.
AnimeFangirl
2009-10-19, 08:36
2nd teacher being Shinomi is my hope. It will automatically make the series 52.7% better. She and Eikichi had such good chemistry in SJG, much better than with that milksop Fuyutsuki. *prays hard*
bandit_legend
2009-10-20, 10:16
Yeah don't get me wrong, I'll be more than happy if she turns out to be Shinomi as well. Seeing those to interact now that they're grown up after so many years would really be something. Lot's of laughs I bet.
However, I still think Saya would fit well and it would be great to see her playing this responsible role after being the rebellious and wild girl she was in the past. I never got enough of her and Onizuka's interaction in SJG. Also, she's cute
Another thing is Shinomi's already Tomoko's stylist so there's already opportunity for her and Onizuka to reunite through that... so in my mind its like, she's already got hers so give this opportunity to someone else. To have both Saya and Shinomi be stylists is a bit too much of a coincidence though I guess.
Anyway regardless, either way I'm happy. It probably will be Shinomi though.
Onizuka dropkicking the van was cool! Impossible, but cool.

Yep, It reminded me why Onizuka is one of my favorite characters. I think the windshields in Japan don't have the same sefety requirements as in the USA so it is possible to do what he did.

I think the windshields in Japan don't have the same sefety requirements as in the USA so it is possible to do what he did. I think windshield standards are nearly universal by now (high-impact, shatterproof, etc). It's well-known that Japan has extremely high standards for cars produced for use domestically, though that's more for economic reasons than for safety ones.

I believe she is going to be a girl from shanan Junai gumi, either Shinomi Fujisaki, or Mariko Izumo.
I am betting more on Shinomi. blonde hair like Onizuka and big boobies describe Shinomi perfectly.

I doubt it'll be Mariko. Either Shinomi Fujisaki or Saya Minazuki.
Most of you guys probably don't know who Saya is yet, seeing as neither tokyopop nor any scanlations ever got that far. You can check her out on the cover of vol 14 (http://www1.e-hon.ne.jp/images/syoseki/ac/03/07072303.jpg). She's the original Urumi type character of all 4 series'. Very cute ;)

Ow , i checked on Wiki .
Did she was raped ? because it said that if she want to live , Idaten's law said that a girl have to be raped by all the guys in the band .

About the voice, yeah I guess you have a point, but remember Onizuka probably hasn't seen her in a long time, so the way she sounds might have changed a bit since she was 15-16, now being about about 21. Also, as soon as she said tadaima Onizuka jumped in the closet, so he probably wouldn't be able to hear her that well anyway.

Nah, they were going to do it but that guy and Onizuka saved her. What's his name, Takezawa? Of course Takezawa had earlier date-raped her at a hotel, so she was screwed either way.
