I really like the idea a lot, though I believe that GHDPro's feeling is a bit luke-warm on the subject. If someone creates some good replacements though, I'm pretty sure that he'll come around. At least I'll try to talk him into it.

So, is anyone up for the challenge?

Ooh! I am! I am!

Hmm... button replacements, eh? Perhaps we should rename this thread (or create a separate one) to something like "Forum Skinning Ideas", and try to attract the local artisan population to create some nice things to look at.

It may be a good idea to get some rules/guildlines down first (the way some people treat signatures around here...), such as dimensions, file size, and format. Personally, I would propose:

GIF, PNG or JPEG (Not sure about others, but I would prefer PNG. Although if you can get it smaller in another format, then good for you)
No animated images!
Maximum Width 110pixels
Maximum Height 25pixels
Maximum File Size: 2KibiBytes

Fair? Or too imposing? Mods, feel free to copy, edit or disregard the suggestions.

Please keep in mind that if the new buttons are much larger than the old buttons, they won't fit into the page properly.

PS. Thread renamed. As suggested.

What good would other formats do? AFAIK those three are the only formats, that every browser should support... it wouldn't help to have other images if half of the people were not able to see them. ;)
Well, there are plenty of other image formats, some of which have general browser support, it's just I thought we should make it clear that bitmaps are unacceptable, as well as Flash and the like. Not that I make the rules around here or anything...

Wow, it sure is hard making images on such a small scale! Text is especially difficult, I guess I just don't have the fonts for it. Here is a "new thread" image I can up with:

http://r-l.org.uk/images/new_thread_trans.png

Now, that's supposed to be a quill, but can those who didn't draw it tell? Here are some forum icons:

http://r-l.org.uk/images/no_new_posts_trans.png
(No new posts)

http://r-l.org.uk/images/new_posts_trans.png
(New posts)

http://r-l.org.uk/images/hot_forum_trans.png
("Hot" forum)

They were kinda fun to make, although again I'm not so sure it's too clear as to what they are (HINT: Take a look at my current avatar). They're a little bigger than the icons we already have, but I had this idea stuck in my head and I couldn't make them any smaller!

A word of warning, they are PNGs with 1-bit transparency, and I can't remember if Internet Explorer can handle that or not.

Any feedback?

I just thought I'd bring this topic back from the dead, as I've done a little work on my thread icon alternatives, but I'm still deciding over what each one should mean:

http://revlob.com/images/misc/all_flcl.png

I think the head colour (teal or red) would determine whether the thread is subscribed to or not, the plain blue face means no new posts, the plain erd face means no new posts but the thread is popular, the exclaimation point means a non-popular thread has new posts, and the red face with the icon on means a popular thread has new posts.

Trying to come up with a new and original way to also include information about the thread's locked status is hard, as the lock that they use in the default images works so well.

It seems that there are 16 standard thread icons, showing whether or not a thread has new posts, is popular, is subcribed to or is locked. I messed up the transparency on this image, but it's supposed to show all the different types:

http://revlob.com/images/misc/all_as.gif

One set of blue envelopes has black lines above it to show that it is popular, but they're invisible due to the black background. I'm not too sure about the licensing surround the default images, so I'm not re-using them in my creations.

Does anyone feel that this thread would be better suited on the Fan Art board? I had hoped for a few more subbmissions and/or comments, but it hasn't appeared to have attracted the attention I thought it would get.

I like the approach but I would make the following suggestions

Screen colour
Grey = no new posts
Blue = new posts

Body colour (of screen)
Grey = normal (not yet popular)
Red = popular

Exclamation point (!)
No = you haven't posted to this thread
Yes = you have posted to this thread

Lock symbol
No = thread not locked
Yes = thread locked

So I would suggest making the lock similar to the way it is now. Only have one form of Exclamation point (which indicates if you have posted to that thread, not if you are subscribed). Use the body colour to show if the topic is 'hot' and the screen itself to show if it's turned on (new posts = blue screen) or turned off (no new posts = grey screen).

Edit:
The problem I have is trying to work out what the different coloured screens and different coloured body would mean (in both schemes, but more so with your suggested layout). I would be able to remember which is which. And I didn't like the two forms of '!'. While a nice flcl touch, it didn't help the design goal.

This is the sort of thing I'm thinking of

Sorry for the double post :)

I'm not sure I like the position of the lock, but it's more an example of the other colours and such. A better designed lock should fix the problem (since the above gif was just quickly made as a demo).

I don't really like any of those icons. I would prefer something simpler and not so in my face. (Although I suppose I could just not use them)

I agree xris, a clearer approach would be better. I gave the screens a little bit of a scanline effect, though I'm not sure how noticeable it is.

Ugh, do you have any idea how hard it is to draw a padlock on this scale that doesn't resemble vBulletin's? Using theirs for a moment (although with a yellow tint), it works quite well when put to one side. *sigh* The licensing arrangements surround vB's images are still unknown to me although they're probably under copyright from vB's owners, which means I shouldn't be using them. Or am I being too paranoid?

The padlocks look really good, the yellow is an improvement. I wouldn't be to worried about use of just the padlock part of the image (but what do I know :)). If need be, the padlock could be replaced by an image of a key.

I would suggest that you make the scanline more noticeable. Use the darker grey between the light grey lines and a lighter blue on the blue screens.

And I've gone back to your 'face' instead of an '!', red if a hot thread, white otherwise.

http://www.18xx.net/ReadingAnime/all_flcl_16-2.gif

Due to it being a rush job, you may want to improve on the colours, like using red instead of the dark red 'face' and select more suitable scanlines.

Edit
Plus these icons can be used to show if a forum has no new posts / new posts / closed (two versions of this icon)
http://www.18xx.net/ReadingAnime/all_flcl_4.gif

Hmmm, difficult to tell the difference between the first two. But then the tick needs to have work on it anyway so it could be fixed then.

Edit2
Looking at the effect the scanline colours have (using my new colour scheme) I would say they don't work. It makes the blue and grey screen to similar. Go back to your colour scheme Megane, it's much better (this is for all the icons). I still like the face instead of the '!'.

And an icon for announcements would also be needed (assuming they get used at all that is :) )
