It was, except it got lost in the forum hacking incident...

Anyway, I agree with four of the five series you mentioned. The only exception is, I'd replace Shana with Aria. It's just such a nice change of pace, it has to be mentioned.

I can agree with Mahoraba (especially mahoraba) and Air. Karin hasn't been particularly impressive but it has its moments.

Shuffle has gotten better with each episode. During the beginning I was going to write it off but I'm am glad I gave it a second look.

My list in no particular order:
Shuffle (I just hope it doesn't fall apart at the end).
Air
Suzuka (Even the dreadful animation can't kill this simple but effective story)
Honey & Clover (By far the best comedy and drama I have seen in any recent anime).
Tsukuyomi~Moon Phase: Yeah it looks loli, but it does have a plot and solid character development.

My favorites:

top two:
Honey & Clover -- probably my #1 all-time
Ichigo Mashimaro -- funniest anime ever made, with best voice-acting cast ever

other shows I loved (in no particular order):
Mahoraba -- humane, funny and moe
Canvas2 -- deepest harem anime ever
Zettai Shounen -- subtlety and maturity in a Saturday-morning cartoon
Suzuka -- love is hard
Shuffle! -- started weak, became very strong
Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu -- SF romantic pain
Beyond the Clouds -- ditto
Air TV -- best animation ever in a TV anime
Air movie -- wonderful drastic condensation
Karin -- the director of Mahoraba does another great manga conversion; great new voice actress Yahagi Sayuri
Paradise Kiss -- real Yazawa Ai by the director of Beck
Glass Mask -- manga, anime, dorama, and now an even better anime
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan -- unique violent angel stunningly voiced by Chiba Saeko
PetoPeto-san -- most moe chara-des ever, beautiful gentle story, great portrayal by Ueda Kana.

EDIT: Or I could just agree with Angelsama's great post and say that I've loved it all. Anime just gets better and better.

If it's strictly starting in 2005, then it's Tsubasa Chronicle, followed by Mai Otome. Both have great stories and the great music by one of the best female composers to grace the anime scene.

If it's just anime shown in 2005 then it has to be Bleach for me.

Here's my list in no particular order:
Bleach
Tsubasa Chronicle
Mai HiME
Mai Otome
Yakitate Japan!
Monster
and Naruto (before it went into fillers :heh: )

Special mention must be given to Gundam SEED Destiny as the most bashed show of the year, if not the worst excuse of an anime. :heh:

I am just getting into downloading fansubs after spending the last couple of months using Netflix. This has opened up a whole new world for me, and I have seen some amazing and wonderful shows. I never even realized how good some of these shows were until I was sitting there grinning or laughing or holding back tears as the stories unfolded. Here are a few of the shows that inspired me the most:

Honey & Clover - I couldn't even begin to describe how good I think this show is. The music alone is worth it. It's funny but almost 90% of the shows I have ever seen feature women singing. This is the first time that I have seen a show where it is predominantly men singing (and I really never listened to Japanese music at all, let alone men's Japanese music), so I thought it was a great change of pace. The ending theme of the first 10 or so episodes before it was changed was great. This show is just a beautifully drawn and written show featuring people who seem so real they come alive on the screen. This is easily one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Shuffle! - I didn't know what to think at first, but each episode was like a kick in the heart and I couldn't (and can't!) wait to see the next. The whole story arc with Asa has been eating me alive. She is just the cutest thing. I love her voice and that green hair and that cute smile and her amazing personality. Watching these last few episodes has been like taking 10 rounds in a boxing ring. Ep22 had me grinning like a fool before it was wiped off only to be replaced with an "oh no..." Emotionally, I have the most invested in this show along with...

Canvas 2 - To me, more than anything else, this show is about damaged people. Honey & Clover and Suzuka both feature people with problems, but nothing near the psychological issues at work here. I think this show is wonderfully written with characters we, as watchers, truly care about. These are people hurting on the inside, and as the season progresses, watching their stories unfold has been a real pleasure, even when it's the most heart-breaking. The interplay between Kiri and Hiroki is what keeps me glued to the "recent torrents" section of this site!

Suzuka - I think this show is wonderful. I have probably sat and analyzed the characters and their actions and their motives in this show more than any other show. Watching the characters grow and overcome and mature has been so much fun. The music is just beautiful, as well. This is one of the shows I most look forward to every week.

Air - This show is mood, with beautifully written music and sad sunsets. Artistically, this is probably the most stunning show I have ever seen. The story is rich and the characters fleshed out. This is truly a touching show.

Lamune - This show is just sweet. Just thinking about this show makes me happy. The way to two leads interract with one another is simply amazing. They are so comfortable with each other and the love they feel, even if they do not realize it, for each other is what makes this show so special. This is a quiet show that is full of heart featuring one of the strongest male protagonists there has ever been.

Here are some other shows I really enjoy, as well:
Mahoraba
Mushishi
To Heart 2

Hm, I'll try to recollect what I typed before...

1. Honey & Clover -- because Eureka 7 isn't finished yet : ) But actually, being in about the same stage of life that the main characters of Hachikuro, I could really relate to what was happening on the screen. Yet just being able to relate doesn't make a show good -- but beautiful watercolour art, amazingly lifelike characters and simple, yet deep and carefully laid-out story do. And of course, I can't forget Morita-san : D

2. Eureka 7 -- no matter how it will end, the first half has been a wild ride that more than deserves this place. I'm usually kinda suspicious of staple anime genres like mecha, samurai/ninja and harem, but Eureka 7 won me over with the first two episodes and has only been getting better. The animation is still top of the line, and plot twists to keep my interest in the story continue to appear. I mean, what else is there to want... huge surfing robots? oh wait... E7 has those too...

3-5. I have a really hard time deciding which I like more, so I'll just let Basilisk, Okusama wa mahou shoujo and Ichigo mashimaro share.
I liked Basilisk because along with Samurai Champloo it showed me that samurai/ninja fighting anime isn't left only to boring shounen series. Beautiful art and animation, intriguing plot and scary eyebrows :heh: and also plus points for not being afraid to kill off likeable characters.
Okusama wa mahou shoujo stunned me with the originality of its idea. It's kinda like Sailor Moon twenty years later, but with a somewhat serious tone and much more funny and ecchi, which I like : )
Ichigo Mashimaro is just amazing... more proof that you don't need any kind of coherent plot to make an outstanding anime. Slice of life at its funniest, although after 8 episodes I still can't decide whether to love or loathe Miu... :heh:

There is alot of new anime that I like too, but have seen too little to rank them somehow, but Noein, Paradise Kiss, Mushishi, and to an extent To Heart 2, Karin and Gunparade Orchestra seem quite promising. Whew, I think I got all of them.

I've checked both the rumor and lisence database for animesuki, but its not listed on both, yet the torrents are not available.:eyebrow:

Bleach - i guess alot consider it a 2005 anime

offtopic...

Eureka 7 was pre-licensed by Bandai, which I guess is also why it's unfortunately not very well-known, although it deserves much more. Too bad...

I tend to decide after one or two episodes whether to continue watching, so my favorites are simply the ones I kept following.

Best in Show: Honey & Clover. This is one of my all-time favorites, holding a place beside Utena and KareKano. I would not be surprised if this soon is considered an anime landmark. At turns incredibly funny & profoundly moving. Gorgeous in every way.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Mushishi, as yet incomplete, has about it abiding darkness, brightness, & mystery that make it infinitely rewatchable. This mangaka is some sort of genius.

Paradise Kiss. Sutekiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!! If it had followed the manga, which would have required more than its mere 12 episodes, I think that this would have been right next to H&C for the year's best, & could have become an all-time favorite of a lot of viewers. Way too rushed but still a top show.

Ichigo Mashimaro is maybe the funniest show I've ever seen. You HAVE TO WATCH IT.

Eureka Seven seems at first like a whole lot of cliches packed together in a shiny package, but it's very funny. And compelling, though in an unnecessarily slow-paced way, perhaps. But anyway, I'm still watching it.

Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid. Since I'm following the AonE & A-Kingdom sub, I haven't finished watching this one. But it's incredible. Far, far better than the first one. Usually, I don't like action shows that much, but this one is excellent.

Suzuka. It's amazing that I'm so drawn to a show that's so so poorly animated. Shikata ga nai sa.

Glass Mask. Wish I had watched more of it by now. I think the episode count is into the 30's now. I wish I had the manga.

Kino no Tabi ~life goes on~. The series is one of my favorites & this story is a beautiful addition to -the beautiful world-.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Shows I gave up on:
Shakugan no Shana. I think I stopped after the first episode, thinking "Is this some loli-con action game adaptation?"

Shuffle!. I watched ep1 & decided to give it up, then later DLed ep9 to see where the story had gone. Answer: More girls. In swimsuits. In other words, apparently nowhere.

Peach Girl

Bleach, after 28 eps or so. I know it's not a 2005 show, but I stopped in 2005.

Speed Grapher. It was poorly animated & seemed quickly to become a weirdo-of-the-week show. Maybe it ended well. I don't know.

Aria, b/c it seemed way too much like a kids' show w/ a happy message at every turn.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Yet to see:
Emma. I hear good things.

Mahoraba. I think I watched the promo & decided that it wasn't good, but everyone's raving, so I'll take a look.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Yet to decide:
AIR, Zettai Shounen, Noein, Beyond the Clouds. These shows are compelling b/c of their mystery, but they seem to lack some little something that would make them exceptional in my mind. Perhaps they're too peculiar. Perhaps I just can't get my heart around what I can't get my mind around.

Mushishi - still airing
Honey & Clover
FMP TSR
Eureka Seven - still airing
Zettai Shounen

Other worthy mentionables:---

Lamune & Rozen Maiden Traumend - Just watch em. ^^
Air TV & Beyond the Cloud - For the stunning visual delight!
Mahoraba, Peto Peto San, Kamichu, & Ichigo Mashimaro - For serving wittiness in various attitudes.
Suzuka & Shuffle - For good romance story (Suzuka) and good animation (Shuffle).

Year 2005 has been a very good year for anime.

My favorites in order would have to be :

-Mai-Hime + Mai-Otome
-Rozen Maiden + Rozen Maiden Traumend
-Bleach
-Black Cat

Everything else was dwarfed compared to those four XD.

Recalling as best as I can my list and its reasons of my favorite 2005 series that I posted before prior to the hack incident. In no particular rank:
Mushishi - It's deep, profound, and always intriguing. Each anecdote contains bits of wisdom. Every episode so far is high calibre entertainment, and I have no doubt the rest will be as well.
Rozen Maiden - Traumend - Short answer: Because Shinku is in there. Long answer: This show's got magic, charismatic characters, plot intrigue, battles, emotions. Excellent execution brings these mixtures of elements to success.
Mahoraba - I followed this show diligently during first half of the year, with good reasons too. My final thoughts here (http://www.members.shaw.ca/Muir_Woods/Downloads/47.html) (recovered from google cache, scroll down to the last post, which is mine) is more than sufficient to justify its place on the list.
Kamichu - Yurie is pure moe, and atmosphere of the show feels almost whimsical. I really like this anime. Just one request, someone finish (English) subbing it, please?
I remember I reserved this last spot for honorable mentions: AIR TV, Ichigo Mashimaro, Speed Grapher, Karin, ARIA...and maybe more titles hidden within the depths of my memory.

1) Suzuka, this is definitely my favorite anime this year. I wonder how long it will take for me to recover after this ends.
2) Fruits Basket, another awesome anime. It was funny, sad, and interesting. Closely ranked with Suzuka, but I still have to put Suzuka as my favorite. :)
3) Mai-Otome, although its only at its 12th episode, this anime is looking promising.
4) Love Hina, very nice anime, similar genre as Fruits Basket and Suzuka.
5) Bleach/Gundam Seed Destiny- Gundam Seed Destiny because of how much I loved Gundam Seed. The show alone isn't really that good, but Gundam Seed sort of made it good for me. I like the Bleach action.

Not done with Honey and Clover yet so can't really judge that. FMP: TSR wasn't that good in my opinion.
Tsubasa was also very good but it's probably out of best five. AIR was also not bad except it got really complicated at the end. The ending was good though. It probably should be part of top five but I really don't know where to put it, maybe somewhere around 3-5. Elfen Lied probably belong around 3 or so.

Mahoraba - Because it's refreshing and easy to follow.
FMP 2nd Raid - The actions and all were great, fun characters. Sagara is definitely more badass in this season.
Aria - God damn this show is fun. Each episode eventhough it's completely stupid with the boat rowing stuff but still manage to make you smile. Light hearted series with the white fat cat as the best character. :)
Shuffle - Eh? Well because at first it was funny but as the ep goes (up into 21) it kinda degraded. But its still watchable nonetheless. Now it's all Asa I guess.

Big let downs =
- Trinity Blood
- Erementar Gerad

Utter Garbage = GSD

I dunno why people putting Shana so high on the list, it was okay but not that great. =/

Still have to watch Honey and Clover....

Yeap, where's Air? Anyway here's my top5:

1)Suzuka - Finally a romance anime where the main character confessed early in the series!!! Got really agitated when watching Suzuka, kind of romantic at times, sad at others...

2)Air - The tv series of Air NEARLY make me cry in the end, gotta put Air for the second place because of it's splendid finish although the start was kind of boring...

3)School Rumble - Awww comeon, this series has got to be the most hilarious anime out there this year. Got me laughing non-stop(and amazed at the AE86).

4) Shuffle! - Again, an uninteresting start to the series(guess most romance anime must have a dull introduction to all girls before the interesting part comes). Kind of surprised me Rin chose Asa though. Hope the final episode of Shuffle! will be good.

5)FMP! TSR - Although I think the first season is WAY better, no other animes this year come close to FMP! TSR on getting my fifth fav spot.

Ok, my Top 5...

1. Shuffle! The series I enjoyed the most :D (even though the ending isn't all that great... but let's wait for the last two eps.)
2. Mai Hime My favourite for some time, until it was edged out by Shuffle! Have yet to see Mai-Otome.
3. Mahoraba Heartful Days Really enjoyed this one either.
4. School Rumble Very funny, although it left something to be desired.
5. Air TV Very cute series, but didn't catch on as much as the others.

Some other anime are still on my watch list (e.g. Canvas 2, Da Capo S2, To Heart 2, Xenosaga), having only seen little of them this far, so I can't say anything about them yet...

7 of your 10 options are harem shows, and one could argue that about Mai-Hime and Pani Poni Dash as well. I can't help but think that the list is somewhat skewed to start with. None of those shows even ranked in my top 5, much less in the number one spot.

P.S. Before I get groundlessly blasted - I've seen every show on that list except Canvas 2, and enjoyed several of them. They just don't represent top quality to me.

I wonder as to who you are commenting on. Because if it is your above post-er, then I've got issues with that. 7 out of 10, eh? Mahoraba better not be one of the 7. Mahoraba is not Harem. It's kinda silly nowadays the term Harem being so mutilated to the point that if any anime has more girls than boys, instantly = Harem. Seriously, the word Harem is being mutilated, to the point where GSD is being called a Harem series....:heh:

I don't have to say why Mahoraba isn't Harem. It should be self explanatory to all. I even hated the way it was called a "Love hina rip off", gee....I mean seriously, as Mahoraba's greatest fan that really...I mean, I rarely, if ever at all, see it called "a slice of life anime with a touch of comedy".....

I forget what all the choices were...I believe they were Air, Da Capo SS, Shuffle, Canvas, FMP TSR, Mahoraba, School Rumble, Pani Poni Dash, My Otome, and ... I totally blank on the last one.

I remember reading the poll and then the comments about 7 being harem and Pani Poni and Otome possibly being harem also, and thinking "what? which ONE is definitely considered 'not harem'?" also, cause I really don't see School Rumble as a harem anime. :)

As for me - I'd guess my most enjoyed series from 2005 would be Shuffle, Eureka 7, and Happy Seven. (...no I am not kidding. shut up.) Not necessarily in that order...just based on how much fun I enjoy watching them.

(edit: from below - okay, that explains it! thanks :) But what do you mean!? School Rumble has like...3 guys! :eyespin: :D

(editing again: the 10th anime on that poll was To Heart 2)

My admittedly loose definition of a harem show is one guy and lots of girls, some of whom like the guy, some of whom don't. In the case of Mahoraba, all the girls who like him happen to inhabit the same body, but it nevertheless fits the mold. Mai-Hime and Pani Poni Dash aren't really harems, but both heavily abuse the cute-girl factor to draw in viewers. FMP was the only show on the list that wouldn't remotely qualify.

Now I haven't said that that's necessarily a bad thing. There are plenty of enjoyable harem shows out there, and I'm not one to resent something simply because of its genre. In fact, I found Maburaho to be quite enjoyable, I just don't think it was the greatest show of the year.

My problem with Lina Inverse's list was more that it over represented a narrow subset of anime. I personally prefer to acknowledge those shows that go out of their way to bring something different to the screen.

Oh, and Xris - you left out Major. The first series began in December 2004, but most of it ran in 2005. The 2nd series has debuted this December, and most of it will run in 2006. One of those has got to qualify. This underrated show deserves a lot more attention than it gets. :)

Fate/stay night

?

It's not out yet :) .

Some people dislike harem series, that's ok; some people dislike shonnen series, that's also ok; therefore there should be a subset listings such as "Best haren of 2005" or "best thriller of 2005" etc.

If you ask "the best series of 2005" the whole thing would just turn into a messy showing of the # of shonnen fans vs # of harem fans- Whichever group is larger, wins.

To Heart 2, I believe.;)

@Hooliganj
You can't really use such a broad term to declare something a harem series. There's a relationship dynamic between the lead male, and the girls that make up his harem. If this is not there, the series is not a harem. However, even under your defination, Mahoraba still doesn't qualify, since Kozue-chan's personalities are not seperate girls, despite how they're ranked in character polls.

The other personalities love Shiratori because Kozue-chan herself does. They might not seem like it because of how differently they act, but the personalities do share memories, feelings, and experiences, be it at a subconscious level. This is made more clear in the manga. Kozue-chan is one girl with a mental illness, not 5 seperate girls in one body.

I still believe Mahoraba is not Harem. And liking should be differentiated with loving. Because in the end, majority of harem is more than 1 girl loving the guy, not just liking him.

Nanako, Saki, Chidori, Natsume, Kozue....main reason why they are not to be compared to each other, is because not only do they share the same body, but it's only one at a time. Meaning all 5 of them cannot be present at the same time with their own bodies, which ultimately is not a harem. Because after all, they've yet to explain the origin of the 4 persona's (at least manga wise), and the manga isn't even at that part yet. Believe me, I know all there is to Mahoraba, I've sorta like engraved it physically in my heart and if there's anything I don't like about it, it's the way people say the wrong things about it instead of whats good about it.

Cool, thanks for the list xris.

Now for my five best:

Air
Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~
Shakugan no Shana
Rozen Maiden: Traumend
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's

I actually haven't watched Nanoha A's, but every indication and opinion of that show says it's awesome, so I'm inclined to include it in my list.

It is, as I said, a loose definition. I can get away with it because I don't use it as some kind of exclusive label, merely a mental shorthand that tells me about the basic plot structure.

Consider my original post to be badly worded, if you will. What I meant was that the list was full of shows that rely on cute or beautiful women to appeal to an audience. Too often, shows like that use that sort of appeal as a crutch, and any actual depth or intelligence that may otherwise be present ends up smothered in fan service.

I'd say Eureka 7 is my fave for 2005. Definently a show with a sense of wicked style while a storyline focused a variety things much less the occasional twist.

How does Emma shape in comparison to the manga? The first ep of Akagi was pretty interesting though.

I could not fathom to decide the best five, so I chose ones that particularly struck me. My bests (in no particular order) would be:

School Rumble
Ever since I began reading this on Magazine, I cannot help but love Sawachika. Tsundere is my moe~. That and Hoccha. Of course, Mamimami as Yakumo also made a big impact on my heart. All in all, I really love the distinct triangular relationship that is budding between Harima, Sawachika, and Yakumo.

AIR
Kyoto Animation did a brilliant job in portraying "AIR" as beautifully as it could be. If it were any studio that would be capable of bringing out the best of Shini-Itaru's (w pictures in animation form, it would be Kyo-Ani.

Full Metal Panic! the second raid
It is also perhaps coincidental that this is also done by Kyo-Ani. I also happen to be a Fullmeta fan. Although the season was different from the original novel, they did a good job both in script and sakuga quality to render this as a good adapatation of the original novel.

Mahoraba
Both the OPs and the EDs were very catchy. Kozue-chan was cute in all, but my favorite character has always been Tamami. Hence, I was extremely happy when Hoccha was selected to voice her! Although I can't say much about Karin, Kimura Shin'ichiro did an excellent job in bringing out Mahoraba's howahowa~ atmosphere that was fit for TV.

Mai-Otome
Mai-HiME was one of my favorite anime shows, and when this star-system "sequel" was announced, I jumped for joy. And once it began airing, I couldn't help but watch this every week. Although my favorite characters are still mere sub-characters (Haruka Armitage and Midori), I was still delighted to hear that Kurinoko and Yuin would be voice acting for roles in this anime. SUNRISE rules in making an anime that rings in tone to what people like me want - moe~ and moe!

Rozen Maiden ~traumend~
Two words: Suigintou revives!!!
Okay, on a serious note, I wasn't looking foward to this. Even though I loved the previous series, something about a sequel casted doubts as the previous one ended with an original ending different from the manga. But the moment ALI PROJECT's OP theme came on, I was into it. And by the time when Suiseiseki came out with her character once again, it rang inside me that this was going to be a definite watch. So far, I am not disappointed - in fact, I actually am liking this anime version from the original.

Pani Poni Dash!
Shinbou Akiyuki does it again, this time with the extreme anime adaptation of "Pani Poni." The staff's hearts were definitely at play in this series, in a way that is filled with background gags and chalkboard quotes that makes an otaku quirk in laughter. The great thing about this is - you can re-watch this three or four times and catch new things that you missed!! As an added plus, the DVD is filled with even MORE background gags and references to keep you company that is well worth the price tag.

Kamichu!
Chu-chu-chuu-no-chu!!!

In no particular order:
Trinity Blood
Father Abel is such a cool character.

Shakugan no Shana
Finally a male character with strength of character.

Noein
I love the concept and the general weirdness of the show.

FMP-TSR
Hey, it's Full Metal Panic.

Solty Rei & Black Cat
A GONZO tie, what else?

and two from last year...
Zipang
Awesome alternate history.
and
Bleach
Which just gets better and better.

So for people who thought 2005 wasn't a good year, what would have made it a good year?

More mecha animes?
More shounen animes?
More action animes?
More drama animes?
More dark animes?

Granted the few of the above genres this year were pretty decent. 2005 was as good as 2004 for me at least, because I like harem which are always plenty, and there are more slice-of-life this year as well.

No particular order:

Noein ~Toward Another You~
That has a high potential to make it in my favorite anime list. Weird but perfect.

Black Cat
Started very very good, and combines everything in a beautiful way; drama, comedy and action. The characters are also very likable.

Suzuka
Probably the best romance I've ever seen. If not, the most realistic for sure. The characters are so deep and their emotions are real; and that's something not many anime can do. The animation is awful though.

Eh.. I think

Honey & Clover
Absolutely brilliant; perfect balance of a serious storyline and also its comedic side. I was quite skeptical when I saw a few people lauding it in this thread, but I decided to try it out anyways. I'm halfway through, and this is pretty amazing stuff. Great, consistent animation and it's immecably paced. Add to this the wonderful music.. and we've got a winner.

Mushishi
Great stuff as well. Each episode presents an interesting story, always gripping and sometimes extremely fascinating. Loved that it was always taut, and kept things moving well. The earlier episodes particularly impressed, with its "organic" vision that reminds me of Miyazaki's Nausicaa (manga series).. I'm hoping the later episodes will keep its high quality up.

AIR
School Rumble
Mahoraba

Think these three have been extensively discussed already.

Probably the only two I really enjoyed from this year were...

1. Full Metal Panic: TSR
2. Basilisk

The rest started last year, so I can't really pick them.

So for people who thought 2005 wasn't a good year, what would have made it a good year?

More mecha animes?
More shounen animes?
More action animes?
More drama animes?
More dark animes?

I would have liked to see more darker anime. AFAIK the only dark anime this year was Basilisk :upset:

I liked FMP TSR a lot, Chidori's and Sousuke's and Tessa's relationships became more clear. And more Lambda drivers ^^.

Tsubasa
Mai Otome
Shakugan no Shana
Shuffle!
Bleach
Tenjou Tenge
Mai-HiME but I think that was 2004.. ended in 2005 rite?

Your talking about Boku No Marie, right? Wow, about time I heard someone mention that lol. One of my favorites too. It was licensed by ADV, and I do remember they mentioned something about a DVD version after that old VHS version. Why yes, here it is: http://www.advfilms.com/CatalogFilms_Detail.asp?ID=504

Great stuff, I recommend it to anyone who wants to see one of the early girl-is-an-android kind of anime.

:topicoff: I mentioned Metal Angel Marie in the "not what you expected" thread - maybe that's what you remembered. Anyway, this 3 episode OAV covers the origin story, a short story arc from the 2nd or 3rd volume (iirc) and a completely original story. The manga is complete at 8 volumes, but is unlicensed and seems to be really hard to find.

Eh. I looked through the whole thread and collated the results so far. It's not entirely accurate because some people put their top 5 favourites and then the Honouralbe Mentions... I did not include the Honourable Mentions or their equivalents from any post. Some people put very long lists, and I put the whole thing down, order or no order (unless they said "the following are honourable mentions"sort of thing)

The thing with being able to put in as many anime as you like mean that the votes get spread out. which has good and bad consequences...

Anyway I've got unfortunately no time to arrange it because I have to go right now, but this is what I got. I added in my votes of

Noein
Emma
ParaKiss
Mushishi
One Piece movie 7
Air

Zettai Shounen almost made it there, seriously - but the last bit of the 2nd arc just failed to get it there.
Aquarion was really hilarious but it was ultimately a bit too mindless.
Speed Grapher has, IMO, had one of the greatest potential a GONZO series has ever had and deserved a high budget. But it unfortunately faltered and then even teh writing ended up going off, even though it had potential... :(
Tide-line Blue was quite good also, it had some unusual bits in some places... but I didn't like the ending much and it turned out too cliche in some bits, really. Also was a tad too short, but I guess the payoff is the high production quality.
Honey and Clover had some good moments, but I think it's a bit overrated.

That's it.

I know this is an opinion thread, but it really frustrates me to see anyone saying Honey & Clover is overrated :D;;; Damn you people! Damn opinions!!!!

Anyways, I'd like people to give more substantiation to their listing.. some have done just that and that's great. This is because I, after all, found H&C through this thread. I'm hoping to find one or more series to crash-watch before my new semester starts, and hopefully this thread will help..

Well as I said earlier in another thread I think Paradise Kiss (drawn by the creator of Beck) should really get some credit and is perhaps the sleeper anime of the year as a new series....First off it's visually unlike anything I can recall seeing and it uses CG as good as I've ever seen in a realistic/romantic-based anime (perhaps only Count of Monty Cristo is better if you call that a romantic anime)...The style of the show is so refreshing and at times pure eye-candy...even stuff like the scene transitions that include flowers or stuffed animals are quite creative...

The story isn't particularly new as it's about a young girl trying to find herself, her place in life and falls in love in the process...But what's fresh is the way the story is told and the stylistic perspective we get from the fashion world (I would have never expected to be so interested in a story told from this angle)...When you break it down it really is a story about choices and unlike many animes in this genre it really gives the audience an emotional pay-off (You don't wait all series to see the characters kiss or fall for each other or deal with their complex issues)...It also seems to be just real in the way it deals with it's characters (who are really likable BTW, especially ~Kawaii Miwako~)...What they talk about, how they look at life it's all so realistic and plausible as opposed to the "pie in the sky" type of thoughts shows like this usually bring...

And when it comes to issues concearning sex, it's not all chibi and shy about it, it's just real and doesn't short-change the audience at all...Many episodes made me think about experiences I had in High School and how they shaped my perceptions about myself and girls...The main character Yukira (Caroline) is very engaging in the way she changes thru-out the show...Starting off as a basic snob-type and transitioning to a vulnerable confused adolecent women...Overall this is just a very refreshing anime and of all the animes I watched in 2005 I think it deserves to be called the best new series (especially for it's genre)...The one dissapointment is that it's only 12 episodes...I could watch many more...

Other shows to consider: Speed Grapher (This show probably isn't the best and has some well documented problems such as production quality, but i thought it was one of the more challenging concepts for an anime I've seen in years...Sometimes I love the concept of a show and what it's trying to achieve more than the series itself...A very raw and unapologetic tale...

Also School Rumble..I started off thinking this was a hyped-up show that wouldn't meet expectations...It started off as a normal enuff silly harem type anime, but really got wacky and extremely funny in the middle to end...Although the ending pretty much mind-raped and betrayed everyone it was still a great series...The whole series is really about Harima (much more than Tenma) and how the characters in his life relate to his manga-stories...

And finally like a few others said Bleach...I really thought this was an OK series to start with, but never gave it the special treatment until about episode 13 or 14 when it really started to get intense...There are some really slow-paced story-telling especially during the Soul Society arc, but that arc was so entertaining the last 10 eps or so that is forgiven...A truely character based anime, the storyline hit an apex near the end of that arc and makes this show really stand out as much as a new shonen can...

I deffinitely agree with Air being top anime of 2005 too bad it had a sad ending.
Blood+ is a damn good aswell but a totally different feel and genre.
Suzuka was alright but too slow paced but still top 10 of 2005.
Bleach is aggressively pushed aside to the trash in my list Full Moon must be the only long series thats worth top rank but isn't a 2005.

1. Air TV + Movie
2. Blood+
3. Suzuka
..
...
.....
100,000,000. Bleach :heh:

Can someone please tell me what is so good about Air? I watched the entire thing and even though I liked it, I did not think it was spectacular. The animation was good, yes, and the characters slightly interesting but that was all it amounted to, for me. The plot was pretty flat and it just built itself up and went out like a flat tire. Was it enjoyable? Yes. Was it the top anime of 2005? Most definitely not.

Well I think it is one of the top animes because it made me feel so emotional. Few anime can make me empathize with the character and actualy make me sad. This anime was touching and so well done to make me feel with the characters so heavily. Misuzu..

1. Air
2. Mushishi
3. Bleach

Most of the other new animes i watched werent that good, ill go back to watching some from last year :D.

Even though it started in fall of 2004, it ran in 2005 as well and is not only the best show of 2005, but probably in the last several seasons or close to it.

1. Zipang

Totally awesome show. No stupid schoolgirls, no dumb nekomimi, no crappy ninjas. Although the premise is rather fantastic, everything else about the show is completely believable. Of course, its not for everyone. The typical anime fan probably despises this show. But this isn't typical anime.

I didnt watch alot of 2005 shows, as I have tendency to wait until they are completely finished, and then download all the episodes, unless it is a popular show like Bleach or something.

FMP:TSR definitely.
Mahoraba was good as well. Slow, refreshing.
Mahou Shoujo Tai Alice - not a popular show, but it was different, in a good way. Amazing amount of action packed into 8 minute episodes
Bleach - its.... bleach.... what can I say?

There are more but these are the best imho.

For the animes with complete episodes in 2005 I'd say
1.Basilisk-Definately Gonzo's best TV series in 2005..or that's what I personally think. The manga was so-so,but the anime was just great!
2.Honey and Clover-Noitamina did a great job with Hachikuro, but I couldn't find the same interest in Parakiss and Ayakashi.

For animes still going on, my #1 pick is Akagi :) You can never get a better adapation of the manga than this. Mushishi is also very good. I'm really glad that they are masterpieces both mangawise and animewise.

Come to think of it, all four have corresponding mangas or novels.
For the '100% original animes',Eureka7 was great until I hesitated watching after all those love business between Lantern and Eureka.. I'd have to watch it til the end cuz it will definately show up in the Super Robot Wars series.
Sanada Warriors was good, but the Japanese was too hard for me. They used OLD words!!

In no particular order:

Noein
Eureka 7
Mushishi
Zettai Shonen

The fifth spot probably belongs to Shana, but I haven't seen enough of it to form a full opinion of it. I would include Zipang too, but that started airing in 2004, so doesn't qualify, even though I started watching it in 2005.

I don't really feel like praising Bleach because I see it going the way of Naruto and Inu Yasha.

Hardly one of the best anime of 2005, but couldn't you wait until it went the way of Naruto and Inu Yasha before you write its obituary?

Ehhh, I'll consider the thought but it's showing all the symptoms of "draw-out anime-with-filler-episodes-and-a-total-lack-of-plot" disease.

Do you plan to vote for anything, or is it your intention to only criticize other's favorites?

Very good which was somthing new and emotional story, beautiful animation, great music, enjoyable charcters. The plot was not flat at all. The dialouge from the show I can think about each and everyday.

Name somthing top of 2005 then ^-^ go ahead, it's our opinions. Some of us think it is the best. You don't think so, who cares.

I must say I've avoided almost everything thats come out this season (Too much Harem and I hate Harem, hell it was all Harem pretty much). Although Eureka 7 looks pretty darn good. I know for a fact Mushishi was good and Bleach was interesting when my friend showed it too me. Hopefully we can get some good Mecha, Shonen, Action, or thought provoking anime later in 2006 instead of mind-numbing high-pitched screaming idiot girls fawning over a generic male archetype. That's all I really ask for.
