The show is based on a manga by Hattori Mitsuru (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=45730) which serializes in the Weekly Shounen Magazine. I'm not exactly sure what to expect from this show, but the synopsis does read about a potential mermaid who likes to swim naked. Kaname Okimura, a student of Prefectoral Umineko Shougyou High ("Umisho" for short), joined the school's swimming club in order to learn how to swim, but the club is filled with weirdos, let alone teach him swimming. Then, a sunny, happy-go-lucky girl named Amuro Ninagawa who was transferred from Okinawa joined the club. Her extraordinary underwater speed and unorthodox swimming style (plus her personal habit of nude swimming -- a powerful magnet to teenage boys) surprised every club member, especially Okimura, because she reminds him a mermaid-like creature he saw only once in his early childhood.

Look who is the director!? It's Sohtohme Koichiro who was the chief director for Bokura Ga Ita, and was the episode director for several episodes of Mushishi. He even storyboarded episode 4 of Mushishi. This show might not be a mediocre one after all.

I wasn't expected fanservice out the wazoo and felt absolutely barraged by it. I don't think the show managed to go 30 seconds without a panty shot, boob shot, boob jiggle or groping. Not really a fan. Made me laugh a couple times, but I honestly felt dirtier watching it than I did Ikki Tousen DD. Just felt like another in the long line of stuff like Love Love, Amaenaidayo, Girls Bravo, etc etc.

To be honest, I was disappointed, since the writer did Emma2, and the director was involved in Bokura ga Ita and Mushishi. I was clearly expecting something different.

The thing is... for stuff like Ikki Tousen, there's a predictable flow to things. "Fight happens, clothes torn, wash, rinse, repeat." It provided at least context for the blatant fanservice. And for stuff like Girls Bravo, the fanservice is pretty much always the punchline at the end of the joke, or the joke itself. Umisho's first ep used boob and panty shots to fill the time between the next boob and panty shot joke.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I did laugh at it more than a few times, but the whole thing just felt really excessive.

I watched the first episode timidly, ready to hold and press my nose shut at moment's notice, but what is this? The overall animation is pretty nice for a show that I thought was going to be super ecchi for all intend and purpose. Then that Opening song. Hoo yeah, the fanservice. :heh:

This show might actually turn out to be a pretty decent one if the atmosphere is evenly maintained just as it has been in episode 1. The potential romance factor also increases the attraction for us romance junkies. For once I want to see some tangible romance in this kind of genre. Let's see how long the animators can keep this up.

I agree. The voice of the protagonist wasn't as annoying as I figured to be. I still don't like the male lead and I'm sure I'll find more ammunition to look down at his character in the upcoming episodes. :heh:

Not knowing what you are seeing without pictures or at least a better description, are you sure that it's been censored? Even in the manga this is based on doesn't often show actual nudity that isn't covered up in some strategic way (and when it isn't covered, it's always lacking detail). The first episode pretty much followed the manga with only a few minor changes that I noticed(mainly how our hero was rescued at the end).

I'm a big fan of Hattori Mitsuru's manga as I realy like his girl character designs. And his stuff isn't mindless fanservice as they are a comedy first and foremost and just spiced with fanservice. ;) I'm just hoping that the animators don't ruin this show so that it will do well. I'd like to see some of Hattori's other works done (though I suspect Otogi no Machi no Rena will never make it to TV due to its content but perhaps Inu Neko Jump might).

It's kind of obvious that while the pieces are the same design (more or less) one is for the manga and the other is for the anime. That's not really censorship because it's accurately portraying the anime. The styles for the two pieces are different too and coincide with the anime and manga styles.

Personally what I really liked from this series is the seifuku. I don't know, but ever since Stellvia I always had a thing for one piece girl's uniforms; to me it just seems cuter maybe because its rarer I guess.

For a mucho fanservice show, I can actually stomach it for some reason. Main reason might be because the entire show is about swimming, of which I am already expecting it, I dunno. Of course, the show implying that the protagonist and female lead met each other when they were small goes a long way for me lol. :whistle:

I can't agree more that Umisho's fan-service doesn't seem too overpowering. Although, I'm not sure I can call it tasteful since we have Ikariya, the president of their swimming club or whatever. :heh: Regardless, I still like him and I find him to be absolutely hilarious! I can't wait to be introduced to more of Umisho's wacky characters. I am really really attracted to the character design, also.

2nd episode was just ridiculous, and still uproariously funny. I'm not usually up for shows that are totally fanservice driven, but I really dig the overall style of the show Shizuoka's little slip ups were hilarious, moreso thanks to her VA, but The last bit of the episode with her was just...oh man :heh:

I hate it when they use shadows/ icons etc that blatantly block out parts or even half the screen. In recent anime I find the censorship in Sayonara Zetsubou sensei a bit disturbing. :upset:

Her charatcer(green haired one) is a kid thinks nothing of nudity or the like thus all the "bad" fan service around her is mostly due to the individual watching it, this goes back to Ranmas style of nudity its fun and silly not so much "hentai" altho this is a ecchi show so its going to lean to echhi ness more than ranma but for the most part its a fun and silly show if the fan service is a turn off find something else,theres always going to be something to not like in a show I wish publishers would get that and lighten up on the more silly nudity..

This was pretty cute even with the occasional moments of crappy art/animation. First part the umisho swimming team brings new meaning to the word sucking:heh:. We should probably be a little clear about this. There are at least two faulty versions of Episode 3 floating around. I downloaded two different sized encodes and they both began with the first 9-1/2 minutes of Episode 1. It continued until the second eyecatcher at around 9:33. It appears hi no ken Jebus has seen a good version.

While I got lots of laughs from eps 1 and 2, ep 3 had my most favorite Amuro x Kaname moment thus far
After Kaname "rescued" Amuro from the shark aka swimming captain, Amuro jumped into the raft Kaname was using after thanking him. Kaname panicked, then accidentally groped Amuro's right boob (embarrassing both of them), then did the feign innocence thing. Amuro's reaction was really cute - she made a cold stare at Kaname that was actually cute on her, and all she said was "chotto...", then "chotto chotto chotto chotto!" (as opposed to most girls who would yell "Hentai!" and punch the daylights out of the guy), though it was still enough to scare Kaname out of his wits.

At least we know that while Amuro may seem naive about stuff like skinny dipping, she knows very well the ethics of groping.

Can someone tell me what the title actually means?
I tried adding a tentative translation to the wikipedia article (it seems to be something like Umisho swimming club's nude group or somesuch) but it got deleted as wrong but whoever did it didn't see fit to replace it with a correct translation. As for the Kenko bit, unless the series is being sponsored by the coffee company, I assume it's a really kenkou (けんこう) - healthy, wholesome.

As for the show, I love the big cheezy grins, Hattori's latest heroine looks even sweeter than Yuki in Inu Neko Jump, although I did rather like the pathos of Yuki hiding from the world behind her headphones, rather like someone with the NHK syndrome thing who's ventured out into the world.

I wasn't struck by the squeaky voice acting (once I managed to get sound at all, Ayu's sub remained resolutely silent for me and I ended up downloading a raw to watch. The Ayu sub appears to be Ogg Vorbis sound which I don't usually have a problem with.)

Presumably the title is reminding us Umisho is about healthy nudity for our viewing pleasure, not your typical ecchi, borderline H fapping material. :heh:

While Amuro's naivety poking around Kaname's room was one thing, what tickled my ribs a lot more was the "shower scene" outside in the lawn (and being seen by Kaname didn't even bother her; and still it took Kaname like 5 seconds to realize it). :D I get the feeling Amuro considers any place with sufficient amounts of water for cleaning hygene as a bathroom, even if it's outdoors and offers little to no privacy. The closest thing I saw to this was back in Da Capo Second Season when Miharu was brushing her teeth just outside her front door, clearly visible over her property's fence.

Maya, Kaname's selfish/spoiled/manipulative/aspiring model/childhood friend is a very fun character but that's because I like her voice actress:heh:. Sort of expected that she would develop some kind of rivalry with Amuro so should be interesting to see where this goes. I liked this one plenty of funny moments like the show the girls gave in Maya's changing room:heh: and anything involving Shizuoka. But something must've stopped them in the middle at some point. Which probably because, and this is my best guess, that they just couldn't get any work done for the next episode. ...They got timetables to deal with. So they likely just decided to go with the lighter Kermit setup.

askia47: The way they've done it is the intro has the subtitles encoded into the video, but for the rest of the programme they're using 'soft-subs', and you need to press 's' to activate them,

Although as a fellow Mac user I'd recommend using Perian (http://perian.org/). It's a free quicktime add-in which lets quicktime work with MKV files and others. It's also MUCH better at displaying this type of subtitle than VLC is.
The only thing with Perian is that it does take a while to start playing, as with this type of file it has to read the entire file first before it starts. However I've been using it for a while and it knocks spots off VLC!

What a fun little show. As I said after ep1, it is so good-hearted. Nothing special, just a pleasant watch. I wouldn't say the extreme fanservice was tasteless (as long as you were in the right mood) or interfered with the characterization (to the extent there was any). And the 13th and final episode was just right.

As a seiyuu side-note, I only just realized that Maaya, the tsuntsun redheaded Umishou swimmer, was voiced by Yahagi Sayuri, one of my favorites. She is really widening her range, having never played anything like a tsundere character before. I just didn't recognize her voice at all. She is only 21, and had her first role as Karin in Karin two years ago, but now she seems to be working constantly and becoming a real pro.

no idea, I haven't read the manga. I'm guessing there's a bunch of misunderstanding on Amuro's part about Oki and Shizuoka.Seems that way. Man I want to read about it pretty fierce.

Although I hear manga is a bit on the sloppy side and there's probably no hope for anime season 2, since the it is too much of an underdog. Sigh.

I'll have to pick up the manga when I meander over to Japan next time.

Good themes, funny (because it's a comedy), and ended pretty well (though the ending was chopped up and shown like that.

Compared to Nagasarete Airantou, this should win. Both shows have lots of fanservice, but the comedy in this is definitely better.

Personally, this anime was the season's upper-tier. Just as the title conveys, it was a very fresh and clean experience from start to finish. Granted it has a high degree of fanservice, I thought they were all handled well and its plot and other core elements weren't lacking in the least. Although as a fellow Mac user I'd recommend using Perian (http://perian.org/). It's a free quicktime add-in which lets quicktime work with MKV files and others. It's also MUCH better at displaying this type of subtitle than VLC is.
The only thing with Perian is that it does take a while to start playing, as with this type of file it has to read the entire file first before it starts. However I've been using it for a while and it knocks spots off VLC!

Personally I think it's because there is only one fansubber, doing H264/MKV only, and that there are an awful lot of people out there who still freak out at the prospect of downloading anything other than XVID/AVI files. When you look at download stats for other series, it's clear that anyone doing MKV only is immediately losing 2/3 of their potential audience. It's a shame, because Umisho is a fine series, lightweight but nicely drawn, with a cheerful look and feel.

I was hoping for a bit more of a mermaidy ending myself, I guess that since the manga is still ongoing they had to do an anime-only wrap-up, maybe the manga will pan out differently, with Amuro dragging Kaname off to her undersea world like Urashima Taro....

I'm looking forward to the finale, but finding myself surprisingly sad to see this one go. I sort of dismissed it as a trifle at first, but I grew to admire how it resolutely stuck to it's extreme stupidness and embraced it's inner ecchi enthusiastically. Since I've seen the final episode, I could safely say they could have pushed a couple more episodes explaining instead of those flashes at the end without overdoing it but I guess a whole new season will be better than a couple episodes. Hopefully, season 2 is planned ;)

Written as "Ningyo", spoken as "Amuro". A fitting finale to a fun series. Seeing Amuro swim at the end was, dare I say it, exciting. The theme music helped. The kiss was sweet, and I never knew that Shizuoka's behind was so fanservicey it could shatter a camera to pieces.

This series was really nice - innocent yet fanservicey, fun and funny...definitely worth the watch. The cast was perhaps the best part, and Capt. Ikamasa stole the show on more than one occasion. I'll miss it, but what a ride it was.

Episode 13 of Umisho is kinda disappointing and kinda feel great hehe.

Disappointing because the ending where Amuro and Okki kissed was like a flashback and doesn't have any script at all T_T. In this anime that is one of I like to know ''how the two will became a couple?'' and ended up kissing without some scripts *sobbing*

Great, because the background music was really great together with the scenes like they win and have some minor flashback to what happen previously.

I rather enjoyed the ending - it was a nice way to wrap things, though I certainly wouldn't mind a second season. Innocent and incredibly dirty at the same time - a tough trick to pull off, but Umisho did it. I love many members of the extended cast, but Shizuoka has to be my favorite (with the Captain a close second). She (like the show) was a rare combination of innocence and flat-out raunchiness.

The manga has finished serialization, with currently 8 volumes released, and the last volume (volume 9) will be released on June 17, 2008.

I just watched this show by accident from lolipower which i also found by accident. This show really was a fun thing to watch. Though it's a bit frustrating that many of these shows set something up in the first few eps. Love candidates and obvious revelations and then put some episodes that don't contribute to these.

The ending was ok i guess though i'd rather have it a bit more conclusive and longer.
