Why? Karin's last words in the raw: "Do you want to take it ... my first time?
Then Nagi: " ... I'm going to move Karin!" And Karin: "Yes, do so... Nagi."
And because I'm bored, the ending note: Her piled up feelings and his body lieing on top of her. Will Nagi and Karin finally cross the line?!

Seems like the statement from one OMF poster has come true: "Shizuku might be the first girl who Nagi has met, but Karin has been the first in anything else." :P

The "worthwhile experience" trope = When a harem manga ends with one girl winning, the author will often try to soften the blow to fans of the losing girls by highlighting how, even though they lost, they gained something or were positively changed by the experience. In other words, they lost, but it is ok because they had a "worthwhile experience".

Read those 99% of harem mangas where the first girl wins, and you will find this trope everywhere (but NEVER happening to "first girl"). However, in those 1% where the "first girl" loses (watch True Tears), this trope is ALWAYS used on the "first girl" (because the "first girl" always has a lot of disappointed fans that need to be mullified).

No the ending isn't as obvious as you think. Don't forget karin is only the first of a SERIES of dates. If he goes all the way with her than he will go all the way with he rest of them. If she wants a chance at winning. Make nagi actually say he loves her without her pushing him to. Something that he has only admitted to himself about shizuku

G MOTHER FUCKING G, YOU CAN'T BEAT IT, FINALLLY MY SHIP IS GOING TO WIN!!!!!! Oh and yea, that was an awesome chapter, honestly I wouldn't mind sex in a manga as long as it's done like this, where there is chara development etc etc. But yea, gg all yall.

Also tropes really don't matter as long as you get to the place in the story and as the reader/viewer you don't feel like it's implausible, there are shows/mangas/stories where it's obvious the red string of fate is on, and the writing is slanted toward the pair, such as Seo's works where there is never a plausible chance for the "other" they are just filler, it also is much like ichigo 100% although it never got to finish so we will never know but tropes are only tropes when in the end they detract from the plausibility from the story.

ps look at all these haters, anyway Im thinking this has to go into the harem route which is fine, although sometimes when I think about the "love" that they are supposed to have for nagi, it does feel a bit contrived, especially since Karin was the tsun tsun, her tsun didn't last nearly as long as it should have but still at least unlike other romance mangas this has taken to some development, and since Aoi yori AOishi had a sex scene I wouldn't put it past him to toss one here.

At this point I agree. That being said I am a huge believer in the first come trope... So I think one of three-four things will happen.

First, which I consider the least likely to be honest, is that this goes all the way through, and Nagi does in fact hook up with Karin and she will become the new first and win.

Second, which I still consider the most likely, is that there will be some sort of interruption, not the standard shonen, someone accidentally walking in or some other outside thing interrupting them, but either Karin or Nagi gets cold feet and it doesn't happen. Thus ending in a Shizaku win eventually.

Third, which I consider almost as probable as a Shizaku ending is a true harem ending. Everyone wins. Good times are had. Yay. (I hope for this ending, I really like all the girls a lot)

The fourth option is the bad one. I don't like it at all, I would be quite upset if it happens. It also has alot of variables to it that I am sure am missing some. Earlier in the thread it was commented on that there is an element of human sacrifice of the dragon god faith. The ritual sacrifice of maidens in time of disaster is actually a fairly common practice in faiths all over the world. Granted today none of the big ones follow with that kind of practice, but it has historical precedent. Particularly in this manga it was show that maidens were sacrificed before. Read http://www.mangafox.com/manga/umi_no_misaki/v06/c051/18.html and the rest of the chapter. Its happened before it could happen again. What I am getting at is that one or maybe even 2 of the maidens will be sacrificed to avert some sort of disaster, or in response of said disaster. If that happens I see Shizaku being the most likely to die, she fits the proper maiden stereotype so well. Or slated to die, as the Dragon God he might be able to put a stop to it, thus claiming her and sealing their ending. Or Karin and or Soyogi can insist on doing the proper maidenly thing over her, and letting the two of them be happy.

Didn't Mike say that the "first" was a checkpoint? This could be the authors POV on this turn of events. I've been trying to make sense of the whole Mike interlude, and that is the first handle I've been able to find. The "Experience Gained" trope was an integral part of the Ai yori Aoshi finale. If this is the case, much more foreplay will occur. ALL of the maidens will gain experience/favor.

Which begs the question of what happens with the other two and any non-male progeny they may have. Hopefully no equivalent of the Tower of London on that isle.

In Ch 7,(p16) Tama tells Nagi the Cape Maidens are sacrifices, to give their bodies to the gods.
But Karin in Ch12(p7) says " It's been hundreds of years, why did he show up now!" That tends to beat up the idea that there is direct generational linage- Bob was a DG, so his boy Billy Bob's
one too. That just doesn't seem to happen. There's a whole lot of back story in this tale that cries out to be explained. Ooba's relationship with Karin and Rinne. How did Nagi's Dad meet his Mom. Was Ooba the former chief maiden, did the love of the Dragon God for an Island maiden REQUIRE an actual human sacrifice... Yeah, You guys get it too. Lots of don't know.

i see nothing there saying it can't be possible. So far it shows that each of the current maidens are in some way related to older ones. so it give some hint at it being handed down in families. Soyogi and Karin with their grandmother, Shizuku with her mother. Not to mention it is said that maiden only give birth to girls with the exception of when the DG is born. so it makes sense that those girls go on to become the next maidens. And since the maidens are required to have sex with the DG it came be implied that children with the previous ones are possible and so the line from there continues for several generations normally after that until the next DG appears.

so it is quite possible.

There is also the line that Ooba once said to Nagi that how they knew HE was the next DG was because the previous one died the same day Nagi was born. So one could say that it skips a few generations and all the maidens are born until one bears a male child that is born the same day the last dies.

It could be coincidence, or it's just that to have a series of events play out in perfect alignment with legend probably deduced Nagi as the DG. I doubt the Dragon God is a thing that happens every few hundred years, but is passed down through the Cape maiden's bloodlines, or there are other more specific qualifications to it that have yet to be said of. In any case, Nagi might want to snoop around those legends and learn just what it MEANS to be the Dragon God. I bet there might be a little training he may have to do to fit better into the role, unless his humble nature is all that's required.

In my opinion, Nagi isn't suspicious enough of the island traditions to even question them at the moment, but I'm sure once he hears and/or suspects some foul threads in those legends and traditions, he might take some initiative and investigate them much more closely. That teacher of theirs could come in handy if she plants the right seed of doubt in Nagi. There has to be more to the Maidens and the Dragon God than Ooba is letting on.

I would hope "favor" isn't what Nagi and Karin are heading into at this moment, because that makes Karin the winner by semi-foul tactics before letting the other 2 get their turns with him. If there is another means, like a marriage proposal, then that would be different, and that would give the others a few more shots to claim the prize.

Ya know, I hadn't looked at it that way, but your point was well made. Ch 52 is the pivotal point in what happens in the series. And there is an interesting preamble in the first chapter, BOTH about reincarnation/being reborn. The author has a way of slipping all manner of points past me. I still agree that nobody but Ooba knows what the heck is going to happen.
I also thought about the intro's quote "and those gods are overflowing with love." since the Maidens are also local deities, this could get interesting....
I still still think the author will take the high road morally, but.

I still have 3 quotes that bug me in this tale. There has to be some reconciliation to them.
1. Karin in Ch12(p7) says " It's been hundreds of years, why did he show up now!"
2. Rinne in Ch 9(p20) says" You don't really have to do anything."
3. Rinne in Ch 52(p13) says" NiiNii, Might you also..." (In fact, her extended dialog starting with her asking Nagi what he thought of the ceremony still gives me the willies.)

Chapter starts the next moring leaving you to wonder what happened. It makes multiple fashback to the chaos of the night. I can't tell exactly but looks like Nagi couldn't find the right hole at first causing karin to panic. then it seems nagi couldn't get it up (They made a point of having a closeup of his crotch and porn mags while he's thinking abou that moment in present time). The chapter ends with Nagi meeting up with Soyogi.

It's possible. So far I think, there is a THEME being established. The next encounter will also end in humiliation and Nagi loading up on self doubt. Possibly to the point of fearing his soon approaching meeting with Shizuku. This could be a repeating cycle of failure, running as long as the author desires. There will have be an event to re-establish his connection to the Dragon God, a seeking of the deity, to re- focus and allow that consciousness to guide him.
So far, that's when this tale has been shining.

Although I have grown a bit annoyed of Nagi, I admit that it was nice to see him in a quite serious mode after his mess-up with Karin. It was a welcome change to his usual goofy and similar facial expressions and the more serious look suits him IMHO better, but that might also just be due to the mangaka's drawing style.

There will have be an event to re-establish his connection to the Dragon God, a seeking of the deity, to re- focus and allow that consciousness to guide him.

That would be pretty nice. Maybe with some form of trance/meditation to "converse" with the Dragon God deity or so. I'm sure Karin's grandma should know some ways to "contact" him, without telling her of the incident :heh:

Just finished reading chapter 86!

Soyogi was very cute in this chapter, her puppy eyes express after pleasing Nagi reminds me of Karin a lot. This chapter transition from comedy to sexiness kind of felt uncomfortable, especially when Nagi kissed her afterwards. I agree with Chaos, if this series doesn't go with "harem ending", Nagi character would be portray as a douche for me.

Overall this chapter was funny, even though I'm not a big fan of Soyogi.... was that really Soyogi?This was my exact thoughts as well, maybe the "Karin arc" is confusing the author and her characters.. :eyespin:

Lol, I had to use a sheet of paper as a measuring tool to see the difference. Check the rectangle-shaped pattern on the door in the background right above her ribbon in the right panel. Then you can see a slight growth on the middle panel when the ribbon covered the lower line of the pattern :D.

Edit: Oh yeah, as for the actual chapter: I did mention before that Soyogi is my least favorite of the three? Well, her chapter-focus wasn't *that* bad, but personally only the last 3-4 pages made her look actually cute(r).
The bad: She STILL refers to him as Dragon God? Jeez, I'm speechless, really.

I get the impression that Soyogi is going down a checklist, ticking off the points one by one.
The relationship that she has had in the past with Nagi tends to be filled with over-reaction,
going to the farthest extreme that she can reach under her own steam. Followed by a period of Nagi's counterbalance/ normal reaction. I'm just never sure where things will go!

Regarding the chapter (88) and the 3 maidens, Soyogi analyzing skills are top notch and I'm glad she trusted Nagi words. Now about Shizue, I agree that she annoying, but she has her uses for now and later. Soyogi character itself is difficult to flesh out, to have more chapters like Karin. To define Soyogi character, I would say she is strict, logical, serious, a klutz and she has a devotee (aka Shizue). If Soyogi does not win Nagi heart, theres Shizue to comfort her, which leads to "yuri", likewise for Karin for being outgoing and having the entire village enjoying her company, but most importantly, she has her little sister to care for. Lastly, Shizuku chances to win Nagi love is the highest, because her mom a bitch and she lives alone by herself, who here can spell "Obvious Choice" for the end girl, worst off, she was the first to be introduced. Here we are, going down the path fuse between romance and sympathy. :rolleyes:

Overall, I find this chapter comical and a of screen time on a secondary character, but the tiny boobies are a good compromise. xD

Yes. Soyogi does seem to be developing.
Something along the lines of an admission that she and the girls have human qualities. The
Dragon God reincarnation has NOT been common knowledge- and this is gonna put the whole
event in a pickle. One of the plot holes in this tale is the local's attitudes and beliefs towards the
Maidens and the DG. Perhaps this arc will start to fill in the gaps. Shizue's reactions go past what I'd consider respect and devotion. Island culture?

Now Soyogi is interested in a boy, which is a crisis in a BFF manga, but the end of her world and her personal worth for Shizue. Sure she is irratating, but people are.

So yeah, funny chapter. It's amazing how slow these chapters can go timeline wise. We'll spend a dozen chapters on one hour. I can't think of any other series that does this. 89 chapters and we still aren't through what... four months, not even.

I figure the story goes on for one more month, until September 23, Nagi's 18 birthday, though they could tell the story of the aftermath of his choices for years if they wanted.

Once again, the Author shows us his mastery of the storyteller's art. Soyogi is showing more
honesty and truth about her heart and desires than I've seen in the tale to date. She is spilled her gut- and NOT just to Shizue. But for Nagi to follow Shizue and try to resolve something/somehow
is GENIUS! It once again takes the story out of the ordinary to the extraordinary.
The ability to slow the clock is the opposite of " Three days Later" narratives.
He's GOOD @ this. Think about how much more you want to know about what will happen next,
compared to the simple narrative. Your life doesn't skip days does it?

"Why now?" Because it is such an important time. The first time Nagi went to Soyogi's house it was pure farce. First thing Soyogi took off her clothing because of something that she read in a magazine and because she thought it was her duty. When Shizue interrupted them it was more of a relief than a disappointment since Nagi was at the point of having to decide whether to tell her to go get dressed or have sex with someone who didn't really love him. (For those who think Shizuku is due to be first because of the make-out session on the cape, remember Nagi was only one towel away from paradise here.)

This time it was different. Soyogi wasn't feeling sorry for herself for not being good enough and doing her duty to the Dragon-god. She was expressing true feelings and desire for Nagi the person and he was doing the same. Each frustration heightens the tension and in no way disqualifies the Maidens but makes them more desirable and desired. When Shizuku is interrupted it will reach a crescendo that must either be stopped by something like Nagi's father arriving or come to a final conclusion.

Page 11 makes it look like a vampire manga.

Nagi is not the type of guy to say NO to a girl he liked, unlike most Harem protagonists, unless it was hurting someone else. That is why he could kick Mike or sensei out of bed, the fool. But he would never reject Soyogi's true feelings. His illegal use of hands shows his true intentions.

On the other hand, I still think that it is too soon for the purposes of the storyline. I very much doubt that he will have a second failure to launch or a bonk on the head, so I don't know what else could interfere at this point. The closest I can guess is that Soyogi gets too overheated and faints. :eyespin:

So far the author has done a great job of avoiding the standard Harem cliches, so I expect a surprise. As far as other theories:

Broken leg or knocked unconscious - Too cliche.
Fail - Already been done.
Shizue returning - Would mean Dragon God's powers of persuasion failed.
Islanders interfering - They would never intrude upon a Cape Maiden. At most they would stand reverently outside Soyogi's house waiting for a blessing.
Nagi fainting - Would make him too much of a wimp after Karin fail, unless it was because too much blood rushed from his brain to another organ.
So the only three possibilities I credit with more than 10% probability are - Soyogi fainting, they actually do the deed, or something completely unexpected.

Own personal theory. Favor does not equal sex. Favor equals child.
