View Full Version : Licensed Yotsubato [Manga]
I'll hang my head in shame for not knowing a thread about it existed. So that way everyone gets their fair share of punishment. Mildly sadomasochistic? Why yes, yes I am.

I'm sooooooo wanting to take a peek but I also same time don't wanna spoil myself!
I think I'll reread the whole series just so I remember everthing before the new chapter is done:D

I'll probably get vol.6 from yenpress, don't wanna sell my ADV versions.
Saw all the new Yen Press Yotsuba volumes at my local B&N today. Please support Yen by buying them :)
Already bought vol. 6 and vol. 3 (ADV's version was horrible), so Yen has my support
It's nice to see the extra effort they put into the work, such as adding liner notes outside the panels and translating every sound effect (unlike ADV's lame excuse of not doing so because "it's more authentic that way" :heh:). Kudos to them for giving this title the respect it deserves.

Now, I don't mind flipping through my hiragana/katakana pocket guide to understand sound effects. Notes can be added at the end of the volume, or along the sides if they are not too numerous.

I preordered them all :D. Well, that's 'cause I didn't own any of the previous releases though. Was pretty stoked to do a reread of the entire series--however, Chapters (I ordered from Chapters) is shipping them completely individually and arbitrarily so I somehow recieved volumes 2, 4, and 6 ahead of the release date while volume 1 seems to have shipped...lol 2 hours ago.
I bought Yotsuba 6 as soon it came out! I'm not sure if i should buy 1-5 because i already have the ADV version. Not quite sure what would be different if i buy Yen Press version :eyespin: But i love Yotsuba&!
but now i must wait patiently for the next volume!

You'd have a matching set :) .... I understand the translations were re-validated from scratch so some of the dialog may be better --- I'd ordered them via mail so I've not had a chance to review them myself against the japanese originals.
Wow, learned a lesson through ordering all of the volumes of the Yen Press Yotsubato through Amazon last night. Accidentally hit the option to ship separately to make them arrive faster (2nd day air), and because of the way they handle it, and because I had the volume 7 pre-order in there, my shipping was going to be $90.
I then put the pre-order in my "Saved" section, said group into as few as possible, and the shipping went down to $20 - AND I'm still getting them all on the same date as the previous way.
Just thought I should pass that along in case anyone else is looking to order the complete set... and if you aren't I hope that's only because you already bought them :D

Hmm, I've been reading through my volumes, and overall I still think the translations are fairly lacking. Although they've fixed stuff like the 'konyakkuya' slip by adding a footnote, they've still screwed up the impact of a lot of the dialogue. Two major complaints I have are the lack of the 'Yotsuba is invincible' line (which is so much more evocative than 'Nothing can get [her] down' could ever be) and the whole shitload of random mispronounciations/mis-sayings they've introduced to Yotsuba's dialogue to make her more stereotypically 'childlike'. Like, for fuck's sake, seriously: mispronounciations were certainly still there in the Japanese, but there they were notable and had purpose and were quirky. Now they are practically every other line. I don't care how 'cute' it's supposed to make her: her father's a goddamn translator, there's no point in degrammerifying her every sentence .
For that matter, this whole 'make Yotsuba retarded because dumb is cute' attitude extends even to the volume descriptions (on the back)--these are so crappy they truly embarrass me. Holy crap these guys have no idea what they're doing; I've honestly got no faith in them at all.
On the bright side, I've decided to (neurotically, obsessive-compulsively) take matters into my own hands. I've gone and bought a pack of multi-sized post-it notes, and plan to go through every volume comparing both the scanlations and Japanese raws with the localization to fix stuff manually. lol, well I probably shouldn't actually sound so angry about doing this; though my Japanese is less than basic (I took a year in highschool, but it's been so long I couldn't even currently grasp kana, let alone attempt any kanji), I've got hope it'll be a great learning experience.
As for the volumes themselves, I'm pretty satisfied. The art is great, and it's damn satisfying to have a book in your hands to flip through. Also, there's all the great bonus art on stuff like chapter divider pages and the inside covers that you can't find in the scanlations. All in all, I'm still glad I made the purchase, although I think I've now seriously given up on the concept of localization...
/lolendrant

So you're suggesting I just wasted my money on buying them... or just not to be too disappointed if I find the fan translations to be better than the "professional" ones?
Sol Falling

lol, ah...well, other people may not be as anal as I am...that post was more my personal reaction, not quite something meant to force other people's impressions before they even get their hands on it. I definately don't think you've wasted your money, as if you've read the fan scanlations then you can just sorta 'correct' the lame parts to how you like from memory, and it won't lessen your enjoyment of the series one bit--and as I've said, all the extra art and the niceness of having a book in your hands is definately worth a mere $13 bucks (Canadian; that's how much I paid for each volume--actually, how about you guys?).
I gotta say though, the scanlation format for this series is definately one of my favourites out there, and it's contributed quite a bit to my enjoying Yotsubato even more. The whole community aspect of it that is brought out by allowing comments on a page by page basis, so that you can share little things you notice or read peoples' unfiltered reactions to parts that they liked, just allows you to take the manga at a slow, steady pace, savouring every moment of it. If only the scanlations didn't have a few slip-ups of their own (varying translation quality, a couple missing lines or even pages here and there). All in all, though, I think the important thing is just to enjoy the series no matter the format, and both the scanlations and the volumes definately achieve that.
Sol's take on the "localization" was a bit of the way I felt. I can't say it was an *inept* translation of a 5/6 yr old quirky style of talk but it did get annoying at times and had you wondering why everyone is so patient with her.
I've translated a few Yotsuba books myself for practice and just have to realize I'll probably never be totally satisfied with a translation. There were a few instances where I did like their choices better than mine though.
As for prices - I have a membership at Barnes&Noble (10% off or more on prices) so my price per volume was $7.91 USD ($8.42CAD) with free shipping. Sounds like Sol needs to blame his silly "Canadian tax on stuff Canadians don't make anyway" tariffs. :)
Once I tried to mail a PVC figure to someone in Canada.... I'd feel differently if Canada *had* an anime figure industry, but they don't. Yet they taxed the hell out of me reselling an anime figure I purchased from Japan to someone living in Canada. D'oh....

My feeling on the translation issue is simple.
Every chapter of the Yen Press translation still puts a smile on my face, and I literally can't stop smiling for at least 5 to 10 minutes after reading.
So even if it isn't perfect, I submit that it still works more than well enough.
Aye, my last post came off far too negative. I still recommend the Yen Press books and commend them for picking the ball up from that other company I'll no longer mention.
Double post... but --- Yen just scored a homerun with me. The fireworks festival sequence (vol. 3) includes a full color plate of Yotsuba experiencing the fireworks. Outstanding.
I've also been comparing the quality of the images to the old ADV versions. The Yen Press version is better (line art, details not smudged, etc), I can't wait to see the Matsuri chapter in the next volume.
Lastly, I just noticed that each volume's spine includes a little Yotsuba rendition under the title and each one is different.
Errrr.... not trying to spam the thread but bleh.... this is new information.
Yotsuba volume 9 is out in Japan now:

haha yotsubato is one of my favorite manga and i collect the tanko ( my own country translatation, 8 volumes so far). It's too bad it would not be created as an anime series at least not now. It will be a hilarious anime and i'm sure it will surpass ichigo mashimaro ^_^

Just posting to note that chapter 63 has been out as of one week ago (December 9th). I just read it; was kinda short and not very epic, though the curtain scene and 'swing shoe tag' still had me chuckling--but the main thing would be that I'd actually given up on there being a chapter this month (62 said 63 raw would be out Nov. 27th) so my checking on an off chance gave a pleasant surprise. Not many others seem to have caught the release (well, mangaupdates hasn't) so I thought I'd spread the word.

And once again I thought I'd mention that 64 has turned up at the usual place. Content-wise, Azuma seems back to form, though I thought the art seemed a bit off this month. Still, this was a pretty great chapter--had me lmao-ing even without some of the zaniness of earlier chapters. I am kinda wondering what is up with this series what with all the delays ever since last summer and even the subject matter now seems a bit more mellow. Still, the sheer excitement for each chapter is still there.
This was a very fun chapter, I found myself constantly giggling and chuckling at the silly little things. The woosher, Yanda, even Yotsuba's attempts at making pancakes. Ive got to say that Yanda seems to make the series for me, he just keeps things so interesting.

This is series that has kept me wanting more ever since I started reading and usually I get bored of series that have the long waits.
really, undoubtedly just the best slice of life series ever!

Chapter 65 (RAW) is out. It is a lot sooner than I expected, but that's a good thing. :)
Jumbo's reaction when he sees the photo of Koiwai and Asagi holding hands was hilarious.
Another nice chapter. Next one will be out on 27th March.

Hm, so I was wrong about scans for 65 showing up at the 'usual place' this time. Anyway, I have to say, Koiwai did come off as a bit of an asshole this time, lol. That first part where he said 'I went out with Asagi' was hilarious, but then later on he also asked Jumbo to take care of Yotsuba while he worked pretty imperatively. It wasn't really anything big, but the wording just seemed quite direct, and these two things together made me percieve a bit of a slight power imbalance between him and Jumbo. This whole chapter seems somewhat at Jumbo's expense, in more ways than one.

And...66 is out. Seems like the place to go for new Yotsuba!& chapters now are generic online readers. I'm a bit disappointed really.
Only 16 pages this time too. "...Just wait for next time", huh? Well, only 'cause you asked so nicely, Azuma.
Anyway, this chapter was pretty lolFuuka. Even Jumbo thinks she's lame. Ah, I feel kinda sorry for her. Not that much though.
What did you guys think of the face at the bottom of page 8? It's hilarious, but I am frankly pretty stunned.
In terms of goofiness, Koiwai has really rubbed off on Fuuka. LOL indeed!
Grownups! FREAKING grown ups!

I never thought I would laugh so hard.. :heh: Although Yotsuba would make my head spin if I ever found and live a day taking care of her @.@
My favourite line of hers beside the one at top would be from chapter 9 .. I'll return alive even if I died :heh:

Glad to hear it. Chapter 67, "Yotsuba and Lying", is also out on the internets, and it's not a half chapter either. Hopefully this series will be getting back into its groove.
I really liked the new chapter. Yotsuba won't tell another lie for at least the rest of that day. Might be a little too much to expect the lesson to stick with her though.

I haven't really noticed any drop in quality in this manga. Some chapters are better than others of course, but overall, they're all great and very enjoyable. Needs more Yanda though.

True, knowing her, she'll forget about that lesson soon enough, but I think she may remain scared of Nios for a good while :heh:

lol, holy crap. Best chapter in what feels like ages. lmfao.
Ena always manages to just somehow hit an instant moe button for me. Seeing her walk along with Yotsuba, I love how there's that feeling like she is connecting with Yotsuba as an equal/friend, and yet there is still that aspect of Yotsuba's outlandish wackiness and Ena having to take care of her. Miura, on the other hand, is just awesome. lol, she's so terrible. I honestly cannot believe some of the stuff she does sometimes, and that's what makes her great.
LOL Miura.. never failed to pull any punch. At least Ena managed to hold hers back after the AC remark back inthe days.. Miura on the other hand, :heh:
Lack of Asagi is making me sad :(

An ongoing-favorite of mine is Miura's interactions with Jumbo - she is just merciless.
Ena saved the day! Psych! She'd do anything to preserve Yotsuba's innocence. This chapter was hilarious and very cute. Miura is so awesome... and her mom is, simply put, HOT. Nice to see her at last.

Finally got around to reading this, and although I'm still far behind everyone else here, I love this manga already. I find it as funny and charming as Azuma Kiyohiko's previous work, Azumanga Daioh, if not more so.
And Yotsuba's seriously adorable, just seeing that almost permanent smile on her face combined with those big eyes full of curiosity makes me happy too. :)
Classic Yotsuba. Such a cute chapter. Haha, Yotsuba's already got a "business card" :heh:
The cover of Dengeki Daioh looked stunning. Fuuka's got a very nice... space suit.
Finally picked up volume 10 at the local Kinokuniya bookstore.... great stuff. The lovely Fuka, cute Ena, ever-punished Miura, and pancakes...

Huh this chapter really reminded me of my childhood. I remember gathering chestnut when I was a kid even though I did it once. It was fun and the chestnut tasted pretty good. Reading this chapter really takes me back. Though unlike Yotsuba I never experienced the pain of the needle.

YAHHH! it came out after 3 months?
Anyone know why this series is so slow? The author sick? He/She has another series?
lol Stake and Fuka running away in the last panel was funny! "BUG ATTACK" !
Yotsubato dad should just stake Fuka already!:heh: The beginning of 73 portray Fuka as good candidate for Yotsubato mother!

Loved the ending to chapter 73. :heh:
You know I'm dying for this to end with Fuka tying up with Yotsuba dad. The author tortures me book by book :) And yes, I know its not really about that :)
^She's the one who has the best chemistry with him, and she's pretty much the only candidate anyway. The mom? Already taken, obviously. A bit too old too. Asagi? Jumbo called dibs on her. Ena? You sick fuck!
Edit: Wait, there was Miura's mom too, who was smoking hot. I can't remember if she's ever met Kowai though. Besides, she probably also has a husband.
Mostly because Fuka and him make the best comedy team :). I could also pull the "first girl rule" but hey :)
Fuka is more grounded for Yotsuba ... Asagi and Yotsuba connect on some intrinsic level but she always seems to be more distant. And mostly... yeah Jumbo would *kill* him if he ended up with Asagi.
Chapter 74 is out. Lol at the 'ghost' created by Yotsuba from moving the camera. And the tantrum was just plain cute ^^ (though I tend to be less forgiving to my own sister......)
Hmmm, noticed that Yotsuba volume 10 is available in Japan and export shops.

We are currently sitting on chapter 75, because there no one translating this series? Was wondering what the current Raw chapter is at?
Is this bi-monthly?
Sol Falling
2011-09-29, 10:28
Yotsubato is a monthly series. I think it's been translated by anonymous /azu/nites for more or less ages now. I'm not sure where the raws're at, but since at a glance 75 seems to have been released in September, I imagine we're caught up.
edit:
Just read 75, as I hadn't been keeping up for a month or so. Man, it was kinda nice the way it reminded me how this series can make me smile despite myself. Great chapter, so much happened. The chapter title is a bit unusual this time in just declaring a generic "Yotsuba& friends" rather than settling on any specific topic, but it was truly Yotsuba's plain old interactions with people that made this chapter awesome!
Also, digging a bit deeper, Yotsuba&'s current scanlator has actually put up a site. Look through mangaupdates. Also, I'm now sure we're up to date, with new Yotsuba& chapters coming out generally around the start of every month.
76 is out and Asagi is awesome as always.
Chapter 76 was a big change from normal. Yotsuba being depressed and her dad taking pictures of her because it was out of the ordinary. It reminds me of that one earlier chapter when he said that nothing ever gets her down.

Yanda is surprisingly good with kids. Probably because he's still quite the kid himself.
Miura's mom is still hot.
Lol at her expression when Yanda arrived, and when she's sulking :heh:
Wonder if the time when Yotsuba finally become dere get along with Yanda will come :heh:
Looks like after a long break the manga will resume.
" The author/mangaka Azuma Kiyohiko-san is taking an extremely long extended break away from writing and drawing to focus on things not directly related with work. Last year, he had been working on finishing the annual Yotsubato! related content such as art for merchandise (e.g. the 2014 calendar), while this year he is and perhaps remains attending various conventions (some that have cosplay), autograph sessions and more at different cities. Not too long ago, he was also potentially looking to hire an assistant, but he doesn’t seem to have found someone to his expectations."
Recently ch 86 was released, the first chapter in a little less than a year and a half or so.
It would be great if the mangaka was able to continue producing more chapters to this wonderful series! :)

Now I am suddenly realizing that I was in a state of serious withdrawals for the past year from lack of Yotsuba and did not realize it! Especially the scene at the station of her and her Dad waiting for her Grandma. Classic. :heh:

Such a good chapter - so totally ... Yotsuba; the author really has a talent at capturing the mind of a child!
Hmm ... a Yotsubato Calendar for 2015 goes on sale in November eh?

Pretty good manga, Yotsuba as child is way more normal than I had expected.
The mental age of 5 year old children is caught pretty well along with what their knowledge are and what they are curious about. I already know whom to give this as present once they have reprinted the first volume in February.
Children will definitly like it.
As adult though the lack of drama curves can get a bit unsatisfying when reading through it quickly. Doubt a child would mind it though and read that fast enough to feel it.
Only bit I don't like as much are some of Yotsuba's later tantrums and how they are dealt with. That was done better in the earlier stage of the manga in my opinion.
If the manga ever decides to give Yotsuba a mother, I will be sorry for Jumbo. Well, he still has the old lady from the restaurant as wife :P
