Ok, I open this thread because I think it could be a good idea to post here (and of course to talk about these polls) the different character polls from japanese magazines such as Newtype, GundnewamAce etc...

Yay for Ikaros I think she is awesome =D and it looks like Lelouch and Kyon are still holding ground. Also no Lacus I am surprised O_o

Personnaly, I'm more surprised about Kira still being in the poll than Lacus not being in it :heh:

Good god, Tomoki got 5th on the male character list? Who the hell in their right mind could like that guy?

Only one I really agree with is Kyousuke. He deserves it for all he puts up with.

Can't say anything about the other series' (except K-On! and Haruhi) as I haven't watched them.

Oh yay! Kyousuke is at the top. I am really glad to see him there. After all he is done and how great he's been for his sister, it's good to see others liked him. I guess Otonashi was too flat/dead pan to get a higher ranking? I found him really funny, he was always questioning what was going on. Seeing things through his perspective allowed us to see how ridiculous things were. Like with the bonus episode I saw recently he wasn't participating, but he made things seem more ridiculous~

I guess I'll have to agree with Archon Wing on the female list. I don't like any of the characters aside from SnO:F. I'm surprised it's on there though.

Poor Kuroneko. Kirino's on there, but you aren't.

Why exactly is Kirino on the list ? She's cute and ... that's about it. She's effing annoying ... period.

No complaints about the man list .. except that Touma shouldn't be there at all .. and don't know all the females. I haven't watched SnO either but really .. big busted girls from fanservice type of shows always dominate these lists don't they =_=

I agree with the Male List as they are somehow, agreeable.....
Different that the female list.........
Well, at least Ikaros got top xD

lol surprisingly a majority of the girls on that list are rather small in the chest department:p
Depending on what you would count as "big busted" I'd say there was only really 2 on that list, Ikaros and Astraea.

But as far as I know that hasn't really been the case. There is another thread somewhere that had lists from decades past and if I recall, don't think they were dominated by the "big busted" altho I could be totally mistaken on that.
I do have a hard time remembering things.

Lol ... I'm happy for Ikaros and others polls.
Why ? Ikaros just beat a fucking mecha character in the poll. XD
For the male, i'm ok with Kyousuke because he deserve that.
Tomoki is just a fucking awesome perverted character, we don't need guy who are JUST dumb and shy when they saw a pantie. (I hate this type of characters in my ecchi anime/manga)
So yey for Tomoki !

Eh Kirino? I would have thought Kuroneko would have greater appeal. then again Kuroneko's cosplay dressing vs Kirino's more fashion conscious dressing does count against Kuroneko. No complaints aganst the others though.

Tomoki deserves his place as he has proven himself strongly principled. Sure those principles are mostly that of a pervert (and conversely that of a good person in regards to the Angeloids' situations) but he doesn't shy away from standing up for them.

Kira Yamoto from Gundam SEED/Destiny and Kubinashi from Nurarihyon no Mago.

I don't get why Kirino is so popular either. I suppose it's due more to her outer appearance than her personality.

Something I find very, very odd...

Kanade is currently dominating ISML like nobody's business (last I checked anyway).

Yet she's nowhere to be found in that Top 100 list, or in any of this for that matter.

Just how is this possible? :heh:

Is the otaku community in Japan really this fragmented? Is there a huge division between magazine-reading otaku and ISML-voting otaku?

The top 100 list has a small sample pool of voters. Also I believe there are a lot of girls who vote which explains all the Inazuma 11, Gintama, Hakuouki, Hetalia, Durarara, Nurarihyon no Mago, Basara etc characters.

K-On was actually decently popular with girls.

It's simple. Newtype has a very specific demographic. As does Megami and Dengeki. There are plenty who don't read them for specific/demographic/content reasons. There are those who don't like polls because they consider them to be popularity based. And in all cases, they're only going to be a small subset that will hardly be indicative of the general anime community. They're only indicative of the consumers that purchase that magazine. Take it with a pinch of salt. You're bound to get far more accurate gauging from the sales of the manga, anime and merchandise themselves.

ISML is an international event (Japanese voters are a strong minority if even voting in any numbers at all). 2ch-Saimoe would give a clearer picture of Kanade's popularity with Japanese otaku. She made it till the third round in 2010, that edition was won by Azusa from k-on. We will just have to wait to see how strong Kanade this year is in 2ch Saimoe.

Is the otaku community in Japan really this fragmented?

That's a very interesting question. I suspect there are several anime watching groups that partially overlap and form a sort of patchwork. If you look at the anime magazines in Japan they have their own demographic/niche. A competion about "moe"-ness will be dominated by bishoujo characters. More general popularity contests will see more varation in characters, where also characters from popular shonen titles and bishonen anime will have a chance.

This is a (non-exhaustive) list of anime magazines, I'm not familiar with all of them so if anyone is more certain about their demographic target feel free to add or correct to the list. Websites of retailers give conflicting information.

Animage: general anime magazine, mostly info on daytime anime and the more popular late night anime, all ages
Animage original: general anime aimed at older audience then animage.
Animedia: similar to animage
Dengeki G's magazine:bishoujo magazine, all ages?
Dengeki Girl's Style: bishonen for girls, shoujo?
Megami Magazine: bishoujo magazine for seinen demographic
New type: general anime like animage but more mecha centric
Nyantype: bishoujo magazine aimed at seinen audience
Pash!: anime/cultural and seiyuu magazine for women, josei?
Terebi-kun: Mostly tokusatsu but also some anime, aimed at kodomo/elementary school age

It gets even more complicated if you bring in games, hobby/figure and manga magazines who all overlap in content and fans with the anime magazines.

Those 'lovely' characters would have to fight with both Madoka and K-On girls, which permanently occupy about 5-6 slots already, not to mention Sheryl "Here to stay" Nome, leaving only 3-4 actual contested spots each month -_-

I would have been more surprised about Koyomi winning #2 for male characters were it not for the fact I ended up teaching a couple Japanese women studying English here about Crunchyroll so they could watch Nisemonogatari a few weeks back. Maybe that explains the manservice in episode 5 of Nise too.

Oh! I had forgotten about that thread. All I have to say about the latest poll is: LOL Newtype. On second thoughts, I can't say I'm too surprsied. Shu and Inori have a few things in common with their beloved Jesus Yamato (he's still there!) and his queen after all.

And this is why I answer "how can Guilty Crown sell so well despite having such shoddy writing?" with "consider the genre". It's sales aren't nearly as strong as some similar shows.

That said, I can't compare to Gundam Seed specifically since I haven't seen it. Anything specific that you think explains the popularity of the characters in question?

That said, I can't compare to Gundam Seed specifically since I haven't seen it. Anything specific that you think explains the popularity of the characters in question?

They're more or less the same character archetype.

Kira and Shu: Whiny male leads. Both are normal kids (not really, as it turns out they are genetically superior; not yet confirmed for Shu but it will happen) forced/manipulated into fighting by others, they whine a lot during the first half of the series before eventually manning up and becoming the messiah. The main difference between the two is that Kira's development was consistent and written pretty well in Gundam SEED. He was also likable before he turned into Jesus in the sequel. Anyway, they're the kind of characters otakus like because they can easily identify with them. Seeing them go from total beta to badasses probably makes them feel better about themselves too.

Inori and Lacus: perfect pink haired singing dolls. Their personalities (Inori has a personality? ) are as one-dimensional as it gets. I suspect they are loved by some for roughly the same reasons they are hated by others.

Inori and Lacus: perfect pink haired singing dolls. Their personalities (Inori has a personality? ) are as one-dimensional as it gets.

That's a fair criticism of Inori, but I don't agree on Lacus. I found Lacus to have an interesting blend of idealism and pragmatism to her. Her goals were in some ways lofty, but in other ways simple, and she went about achieving them with a certain practicality. I also liked the subtlety of her character. Lacus had a certain human quality to her that I find that Inori lacks.

Mind you, that changed in Gundam Seed Destiny, where both Lacus and Kira were too often presented as downright infallible and unbeatable.

^She is most definitely more interesting than Inori, I'll give you that. Although I've been trying hard for the past seven years to pretend that series doesn't exist, Destiny has probably biased my opinion of Lacus. That said, I didn't like her much in SEED either for that matter (I was all about Cagalli... another character ruined in Destiny) but I guess she wasn't so bad back then.

Sorry to intrude in this topic, but since i don't know which source is reliable, could you tell me where i can find a poll with the most liked characters ever? I just want to see which spots my favorite characters occupy; everytime i see lists where, for example, very known names don't even appear.

The list should include all the most liked characters between 2000-2012. The poll hasn't to be some random poll made in some random forum, come out of 100 votes in total. Some reliable source, that shows the choices of a good amount of population, and not counting only few hundreds.

Sorry again for the off-topic.

Frankly I am not sure what there is to understand. It's nice to finally get an adult male lead. Kotetsu is funny & charming & yes he is kind of cute I have to admit But really I just like him because against all the teenage protagonists he seemed like a breath of fresh air (not that I have anything against teenage protagonist)

Although this is coming from the female perspective, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of guys voted for Kotetsu too.

Edit: and he sounds like Sanji, the character he was probably best known for before Kotetsu. Of course now I think he is being typecast in these "old man" roles :heh:

Well of course and we can see from the results they change pretty rapidly (not to mention a different magazine might of had different results).

But that doesn't take away from the fact that Tiger & Bunny was a big hit & I think Kotetsu was definitely a part of that.

That being said though, I wish there was some kind of rule that limits the characters by year or season... The Sunrise Bishounen and K-On girls have been taking up space for so long it might as well be called the 'top seven', instead of top ten.

One time I swear it was the 'top four'.

Yes he's a good looking character (never really thought he looked like Johnny Depp though) :heh:

But how is that any different from all the female characters that you guys like? And really it's not like Kotetsu is the only aesthetically pleasing male character. He's popular because he's a well written character.

And once again as a One Piece fan he sounds like Sanji. :P

He's one of the few anti-hero/villaine-sque protagonists in a very popular series. Pretty much everyone who likes that kind of an archetype would vote for him, as well as general mecha fans as well as his fangirls.

NewType character ratings are consistently a mish-mash of...

1) Prominent KyoAni characters.

2) Major characters from "legacy" mecha shows (Gundam Seed, Code Geass, Macross Frontier).

3) Major characters from whatever is the "new hot thing" in the anime world today (such as Kirito, Asuna, various Fate/Zero characters).

Kyon, Lelouch, and Kira are characters that you will see with some regularity in the male listings.

Various K-On girls, Haruhi Suzumiya, Yuki Nagato, Lacus Clyne, and Sheryl are characters you'll often see in the female listings.

Filling out the other slots are new characters. Whenever there is a lot of older characters, it probably signals that there's currently not much out there appealing to the NewType readership; at least not in a BIG way.

It's a popularity poll, not about which is 'better'.

While not as bad as the female ranking, there's just not enough space to allow new characters to squeeze in for some recognition- you get like one or two series from each season and that's about it.

Great to see the boys in Magi joining in. I wonder if the Newtype readers will also dig Sindbad, that guy is majestic.

Newtype polls are going to have.... Lelouche and Kira in the males section and Sheryl and Lacus in the female section, than it's whatever is popular at the time. Those 4 are staple characters and have been for a long time.

Sheryl's dropped out of the rankings once since Frontier aired, Alto and Ranka dropped out like a rock when the series finished and only reappeared occasionally when the Movies were released in cinemas/home release.

Don't think Lelouch has dropped out since Code Geass aired.

The SEED couple were quite spotty for a while a few years back but SEED HD is airing right now remember and the boxsets for that sell a lot better right now than most shows... (not to mention the latest gundam lol)

I wonder if anyone who follows this stuff enough can pinpoint precisely the exact point in time when Newtype went from a sci-fi mecha anime and manga themed rag made in part to promote Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam to a predominantly moe themed rag with a secondary legacy sci-fi fan readership.

Anyway yeah for the reasons you stated above it's best not to take all that much from these polls other than to see which trends and shows are still popular are not. For the foreseeable future the criteria you mentioned seem pretty much like locks if not outright rules and guidelines which the readership have agreed to follow. It's really not about what character is "best" per se, but what character is representative of the types of shows that are most popular with the readership. That's why with rare exception you'll almost always see the main male and female lead from a given series even if many might argue that they aren't the "best" character in the show. For me the time when I take the most notice of these polls now is when I come across one and a character that I would never ever suspect to be in one has a placement. Like Kotetsu T. He's a popular character (especially with fujoshis) and is the star of a hit tv series that just had a movie release. Said series has been featured prominently in Newtype for a long time and is currently #8 in their Top 20 Anime list, why the heck wouldn't he be on the list?

Good points. That's basically how I see it too.

As for Kotetsu, my guess is that he's there because Tiger and Bunny is a quasi-mecha show that appeals to fans of the legacy mecha titles (Gundam Seed, Macross Frontier, and Code Geass).

Modern NewType is like half-mecha/half-conventional moe (especially KyoAni style).

A couple points:

1. I'm not denying that Tiger and Bunny has a significant fujoshi following. Of course they do.

2. That being said, we're talking about NewType magazine here, and not just any random anime-centric magazine. The very name of the magazine just screams "mecha" (I'm sure fans of the Amuro Ray/Char Aznable Gundam shows knows what "New Type" means). So are Kira and Lelouch here because they appeal to fujoshis, or are Kira and Lelouch here because they're major characters in legacy mecha titles? Personally, I think it's more the latter. Given the very mecha-esque feel of Kotetsu and Barnaby's costumes, I can see mecha fans also liking Tiger and Bunny.

If Kotetsu ranked highly on some internet poll of international anime fans that was put up on a site like this one, or ANN, or MAL, then I'd think fujoshis are the main reason for his success. But given that this is NewType magazine here? Personally, I think it has more to do with mecha fans.

Look at how the characters are marketed ffs, I bet you wouldn't believe me if I said gintama was another Fujoshi title but stats released by jump shows more females buy gintama than males.

I haven't seen enough of Gintama to say if it's a Fujoshi title or not. Maybe it is.

Of course they're both fujioshi marketed titles...Newtype being a mainly mech magazine ended quite a while ago.

What makes you say they're fujoshi-marketed titles? Pixiv is fanart. There's nothing official about that.

Is K-On! a teenage girl-marketed title just because a lot of teenage girls like the show?

From what I've heard and read, Tiger and Bunny was initially conceived as a show for mecha fans, superhero/sentai hero fans, and adult males in general (think "salarymen"). Sure, it also ended up appealing to fujoshis, but that doesn't mean that was the initial aim of the show. Again, it's like K-On in how it pulled in a demographic other than the initial target one.

If Tiger and Bunny was truly a fujoshi-targeted and marketed show, one would expect the show to have way, way more yaoi subtext. Aside from a gay supporting cast character (who isn't even one of the characters that the fujoshis focus on!), the show has no yaoi undertones to speak of.

Also, New Type magazine might not be "mainly mech", but it definitely retains an appreciation for the mecha genre. And so does much of its readership, I'm sure.

Tiger & Bunny was close to the only title a lot of pixiv artists, particularly females ones, wanted to do art of during its airing. The way those characters act and dress and the like - it's pretty freaking obvious.

What's unusual about the way Kotetsu and Barnaby act and dress?

People that I know that watched Tiger & Bunny - of both genders - didn't watch it for the mechs.

That's incorrect. You know me, and I watched it for the action (including the mecha action). I very much doubt I'm alone there.

They watched it because they considered Kotetsu and Barnaby to be worthy of being FABulous.

That's not why Kaioshin, myself, or countless other people watched the show, LS.

What's so wrong with watching a show for the mecha, LS?

Oh, and I'm well-aware of "horny females", "homolust", and "bishies", and I have no problem "dealing with" their existence. But Kotetsu and Barnaby hardly make me think "bishies", and I don't see much evidence of them having "homolust" for each other either.

Triple R is right that Tiger & Bunny is not a fujoshi show but I think they must have seen who was watching/buying and a lot of the merchandise is targeted to that group now.

It's the same thing that happened with Durarara with Izaya/Shizuo.

While I personally didn't get interested in T&B for the Fujoshi angle honestly I'm more inclined to believe that the Newtype readers would be into it more for that reason than a mecha angle. I just haven't seen much evidence to suggest a lot of Japanese otaku think all that particularly hard about why they like characters and thus to me it just seems more plausible that that would be the reason. It'd mesh better with the whole distilled moe voting block thing that Newtype has going on as well. I wish there were more evidence to the contrary and I didn't have to generalize and assume things about Japanese fans but time and time again they make very emphatic gestures as to have simple arbitrary reasons for character appreciation. Sorry Triple but while I so want to support youe argument and while in almost any other case it would be a totally rational and well thought out one, evidence and history kind of sides with Westlo and Last Sinner here.:(

The reason why I'm supporting the mecha angle is because I think that's the most logical explanation for why Kira, Lelouch, Lacus, and Sheryl are all mainstays in these NewType polls. And if they're there because mecha fans are keeping them there, then that means that a significant portion of New Type's readership are serious mecha fans.

In fairness, I suppose you could almost as easily chalk up Kira and Lelouch to fujoshis, but that obviously doesn't explain Lacus and Sheryl.

You have two really old female characters that are practically fixtures in these polls, and they're very different characters from one another. But one thing they have in common is that they're both from famous mecha titles - Gundam Seed and Macross Frontier respectively.

Maybe part of why Kotetsu is here is because of fujoshis, but I still wouldn't underestimate the mecha fan side of things. It helps that Tiger and Bunny is a Sunrise title, imo. I think that NewType readers have some appreciation for that particular animation studio.

Lacus and Sheryl both tap into the idol craze and both have really popular song tie-ins. They're pretty much opposites in terms of characterization and song types though. As for Newtype readers, I've never gotten the impression that they have any particular attachment to a specific studio, they just seem to gravitate towards big budget stuff.

I've apologised to Triple_R multiple times for the way I worded my previous post. I was very out of line.

The point I was trying to make was while people can take a variety of things out of a show, there's usually a clear majority for the quality that was the most marketed. I personally like to think deeper about shows when it's warranted since writing is the aspect of media I like most. However, I have accepted the fact that modern life's affect of time available, fatigue, shorter attention spans and other factors have led to a point where simpler emotions or stimulation or subtext that are easier to digest are easier to market and sell more. And the fujioshi aspect is one of them. Hell, a bunch of guys I know regularly flaunt their 'inner fujioshi.'

It's their choice - as long as consumers understand how their purchases will ultimately affect what is made. People get what they deserve.

And on what Triple_R said, I think his stance is fairly valid in Western aspects. But there's sometimes considerable differences between what Japan wants/sees and what the West sees.

They're effectively tapping into aspects that became popular after Macross: Do You Remember Love and repeating the steps of Lynn Minmay. It worked back then and still does. It's criminal that title still can't be licensed in English thanks to legal disputes over who actually owns it, particularly with the recent 30th anniversary.

A couple points I'd like to make:
First, IMO, character polls are almost always going to be skewered somewhat towards the tastes of the... "enthusiastic towards characters" - fujoshi or otherwise - simply by virtue of participation rates being higher among this group.

Second, as with the fans of big name moe shows like K-On!, I question whether most fujoshi are actually all that "unmainstream". I'm part of a local anime club that's more casual and targetted to adults than most - and for whatever reason the past couple years we've had a fairly steady stream of Japanese exchange students who show up from time to time. None of them struck me as fujoshi types, but one said she had cosplayed... as Ciel Phantomhive in a dress.

...So yeah. My gut feeling on this one is that the fujoshi base extends way, way beyond the "lunatic fringe" many people associate it with.

(For reference, on the moe side, once of the other girls struck me as having very well balanced tastes between shounen action, cute moe stuff, etc. At some point, it came out she had worn a maid outfit for a school festival band performance in high school. Again, otherwise came across as a very normal person.)
