Especially since Riichi Mahjong is such a defensive-oriented game. You're only going to win 1/4 of the time so in order to do well, you MUST be able to play defense. Who knows. That school and its insistence on various teams that compete to represent the school rather than taking the best 5 (with a few adjustments depending a la Usuzan and Subara) just seems so strange.
Speaking of that, I was thinking the other day on what teams I would make if I could pick and choose from team tournament nationals players. The big problem I was coming up against was that I don't really like any of the Lts' play style (sorry Mako). Well, I mean, I think they're ok but no one
really stands out to me. Huh. Maybe Yuu. I think she's one of the better players on her team.
For example, a line up I would like is: Satoha, Matsumi, Hiroe / Hisa, Mairu, Saki. I like both Hiroe and Hisa so maybe one of them would be the alternate. A good, solid team right? I find I tend to like the analytical players who can adapt to occult.
For Teru, pair her up with - oh, Kasumi, I suppose. She's probably the only actual defensive player I've seen. Most everyone is pretty balanced or jamming down that attack mode button. Sumire is still fine for the Lt. spot. Then... FunaQ and probably Sera. So: Teru, Sumire, Sera, FunaQ, Kasumi. Every good team needs a data collector (Kiyosumi had Yumi
) and strategist, esp. if you insist on running around without a coach.
Re: International - They've made it much more obvious in the anime. Very interesting. Guessing that Kubo and Fujita are still scouting for that.
