I need to share this moment with someone,Earlier today I decided to marathon shiki,even if i don't know any of the staff it is Noitamina after all.I swore to myself episode 8 would be the last ep id'd watch because it's 3:30 AM but that last cliffhanger,it's just too big....So episode 9 will be last,no what happens,at least i hope so because i've got stuff to do tomorow.

I can definitely see the comparison of Cross-Game-baseball to NGE-mecha. You're correct that mecha are a relatively small part of the show - it's really an incredibly intense emotional drama and an exercise in self-psychoanalysis by Hideki Anno.
If you don't mind the usual bewildering BONES plot muddle, Eureka Seven is another mecha series that isn't really a mecha series. I think it's rather good and a lot of fun.
