@Laith: Yeah, I watched Flying Witch earlier this afternoon and found it perfect "relax and smile on a lazy afternoon" fare!

Decided to take the plunge and buy Nights of Azure (motivated somewhat by the Amazon Prime 20% discount that applies to preorders and up to 2 weeks after release). That, Dark Souls III, and the Odin Sphere remake should cover me, gaming-wise, for 2016!

Oooh, I'll have to pick up the book when possible! But I definitely need it in paper format, the fact that I have it in 2 TPBs and 1 hardcover is already driving me crazy XDDDD.

And wow Dezo, you have so much more self-control than I do XDDDD. I've already invested in 4 new board games since January, and will probably get more before the year is out!

Let's just hope they choose to release it that way! (Actually, for me the fact that I have the first three books as MMPB, TPB, and hardback makes it easier for me to buy the e-book since I can't keep them together on my shelves anyway. )

Not so much self-control as the amount of available time! I've played nothing but Bloodborne since I bought it in November and I know I have many weeks more of interest in playing it. Odin Sphere is good for at least a month, which I know from playing it the first time. Nights of Azure will hopefully be the same. And if Dark Souls III is anywhere near as good as Bloodborne, then it will eat months by itself. (Plus, I still haven't played Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies.) Really, the only real issue is that I don't have a sci-fi game lined up to play if I start getting in that mood, but I don't really like shooters, or if a visual novel catches my eye.

Hahaha, I'm starting to feel that now. I barely managed to finish Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic recently just because it was so hard to find the time. (I actually do recommend this one, it's a turn-based RPG with some great story-writing. There are some bugs which are still unfixed but I still had a blast with it). I want to play some more visual novels too but as always it's hard to find good ones with variable romance options . It's also hard to find good fantasy/sci-fi visual novels too.

(And random side note, I still haven't actually finished playing GrimGrimoire! The RTS-style is so frustrating for me. It's like housekeeping, you keep doing things and yet they keep getting destroyed/ruined so you have to do it again and it never ends!)

Yeah, I am a bit like that with Magic though it is more a collection mentality, then deck stuff for me.

Hmm, it looks like Starlight Vega has now released the full game on Steam.

Curse you weather! Stop being cold in the morning when I leave for work, and t-shirt and shorts weather when it is time for me to leave work! I don't have any room in my bag for a coat!

Well, sounds like I'm going to have an amazing summer. Both people who have been working longer than I have at work in the kitchen are likely not going to be here come summer, and the next most experienced person has been here for a bit over 6 months. Last summer I was working 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week, with 4 to 5 people who been there multiple years. Oh, and our prep guy quit on Monday, and the only people who know most of prep are the ones leaving. You might not hear from me much this summer.

Started playing Starlight Vega, it's decent so far . Have to romance the hot demon lady first of course, and I get the feeling that's the most "story-bound" romance but I won't know for sure until I replay.

@antlan87: Ugh, sounds miserable (though at least gainful employment is a good thing).

@deathcurse: Of course. You know, I think it would be an interesting twist in one of these games/shows/whatever media if it was the childhood friend who was actually the exotic, sexy one instead of the newcomer/outsider.

@Dezo: For sure! Or for the exotic, sexy one to be a "boring comfortable nerd"-type instead of the "screw the establishment! Rebel!"-type .

What, you want them to put work into writing their characters instead of falling back on tropes and stereotypes? That costs time, money, and requires creativity and risk, dammit!

"Childhood friend" and "comfortable" tend to go together, but yeah, why make them mousy and unexotic? Why not have her look like a succubus (without actually being one; they're played out, methinks), but have them hang out casually, nerd out over the latest video games and sci-fi movies, and borrow the heroine's tablet so she can have an hour-long forum war over whether Game of Thrones is better or worse than the original books?

Or in other words, let's mix up some of the inevitable templates for "appearance," "story role," and "personality," where usually the settings for all three are welded together.

It's such a hard balance in romance, I think, since it's almost as bad when a writer tries too hard to avoid all the stereotypes. That's almost as glaringly obvious as the old tropes.

I finished Starlight Vega today. It's pretty short...finishing just one route took me about 2 hours. There are 3 routes total, so I suppose I could go back and replay, but it's a lot shorter than I expected. But I also blazed through other visual novels like fault: milestone one/two in the same amount of time, so I think it might just be a consequence of the genre & my quick reading. The game is pretty interesting though, and it was a sweet storyline with fairly interesting characters all in all. I'd recommend it at 50% discounted price during the summer Steam sales .

hmm, but the hot childhood friend types then causes the story to fall into that 'secret crush on hot best friend' category, no?

....I know this isn't actually on topic, but my muse grabbed me by the shirt collar and forced me to write this.

I'm a little unsure about the ages involved - do they have enough time to be 'old childhood friends' by late teenage at the least? Are they old enough to understand what they're talking about? ...Oh well. There's always second drafts.

I was eleven when the demons moved in next door, and I thought it was the greatest thing that had ever happened to me.

My parents let me knew that we'd be having new neighbors in the morning, so of course I snuck out of the house at 5 to watch. After Mom hauled me back in for breakfast, I changed out of my pajamas and went out again, this time to see a large van pull up and two people begin getting things out. I wondered for a while whether they were one of the 'gay people' I'd heard about, but as it turned out one of them was a woman - although it was the 7-foot blue unicorn-ogre with the Fu Manchu moustache. (I didn't know about oni yet, despite my game hobbies.)

I was too shy to talk to either of them - well, too intimidated - but then I noticed the third one, much smaller and more human-looking than the other two. She had small horns on her forehead, tiny bat-wings coming out of her shoulder blades, a spaded tail protruding from her shorts, and - even though she looked about my age - just-barely obvious breasts. I could tell because her shirt didn't cover much more than that.

I saw her peeking at me a couple times, and when the other demons - who were, in fact, her parents - went in and left her out on the lawn, I worked up the courage to go over there and talk to her.

"Hi! I'm Jonathan. Are you a succubus?"

I'm... not sure what I'd been expecting, really. I was only just starting to have daydreams about girls and so forth, but I knew stuff from my books - and from the occasional sneaking glances at my cousin's porn collection - so I figured at worst she'd run off, and maybe I'd get a friend - even a girlfriend, though I wasn't entirely clear on what those entailed.

I was _not_ expecting her to punch me in the face, which was what she did. I went over backwards onto the grass, several steps away.

As she crossed those steps and dragged me up by my shirt collar - and she was _strong_! - she bared her fangs at me and hissed, "Look, jerkface, I don't go around calling you a slut ho-boy, and _you_ don't go around calling me a succubus. Capiche?" I nodded, jerkily and somewhat in terror.

Needless to say, we were fast friends by the end of the week.
