Yeah, western RPG's really seem to not land in Japan, do they? Given how World of Warcraft at least made it pretty big in China, it can't be that asians in general don't like western fantasy.

Well, MMOs are MMOs. Lord of Rings is Lord of the Rings.

Though other things like tabletop, pen, paper & dice? American comics? WARHAMMER (EH)!? That's another story.

I really don't think it's the material. I think it's the way they are presented.

Yeah, but I wonder why? Not that tabletop RPG's are not very Euro/US-centric, but Japanese stuff (which is at least as outlandish as WH40K in many cases) has taken a deep hold in the west. And let's not forget that there is quite a deep fascination with European culture in anime as well.

Although it could just be that tabletop stuff is not really very popular in general in Japan (I wouldn't know about other asian countries, but I guess the same applies there?). Lot's of question marks for me all around.

Pfft, when we mention 'fascination' with European culture in general in Japanese anime, it's really just three countries specifically, England, France & Germany (the EFG). The rest kind of takes a backseat.

Well, it's not as if there isn't a preference for certain time periods in western game development. Try finding a 30 Years War historic game, for example. Not really likely.

Okay, I'm sure there are some more, but the one you found is already looking like an indie affair, though it is published by Slitherine. But my point is, there are precious few games or media of certain time periods.

Yeah yeah, I know, I know. I have some interest in Renaissance Warfare, but materials (fiction or otherwise) based on them are woefully few. Well ok, there is Berserk. But...

Anyway, some western stuff just doesn't seem to land in Japan. Do they even have tabletop roleplaying games over there?

I do know there is at least a small, but dedicated fanbase to D&D (the author of Lodoss War for ex. is a fan), definitely a small fanbase to American comics, and probably one for Warhammer 40k. After all, Games Workshop has an actual Japanese page.

But good luck finding actual retailers for the aforementioned materials. I personally never seen one.

OTOH, Japan has its own RPG gigs, many are on mobile. The options are already overwhelming.

Sure, there are tons of RPG's, but so far I've only been aware of the video game type. Actual pen and paper stuff kinda always seemed to not exist in the public eye. But it's good to know there's a niche for it there, too.

Well, the pen and paper stuff did exist and still do. Sword World (1989 -), for example, and there is at least one common mechanic called Standard RPG System. However, as you can imagine, they are gradually being phased out due to the existence of mobile devices. Fate Grand Order as of right now, is the most popular mobile RPG game in the world. Not even Pokemon Go has anything on it.

Huh, didn't know that. In other news, Danmachi mobile still not available in Europe, grrrr.

And Pen & Paper will never die. Mobile games cannot replace sitting down together with your friends and rolling some dice.

So Beto, not wanting to draw too quick of a conclusion from just reading the news, but how important is that museum really?

As a historian, its (and its contents) destruction makes me want to weep. So much history, gone. Like tears in the rain.

The thing is, I know next to nothing about that particular museum, and I wanted to know what were some of its highlights.

The few things I heard were pretty major. It was the second biggest museum in the Americas. Beto surely can give more details.

Dude, they had lots of things catalogued in areas like paleontology, mineralogy and the like. For a few things, they had Egyptian mummies, dinosaur skeletons and one of the oldest human fossils of Latin America - not to mention lots and lots of data from researchers whose primary work computers (and storage) were kept at the site. In short, they lost approximately 20.000.000 items (yeah, millions), in that damn fire.
Also, the building itself was used as the residence of the Royal/Imperial Family, back in the day, and it was the site where our first Constitution was written.

It's a true and mostly avoidable tragedy. Goes to show how much people regard "culture", around here.

Well, fuck. Now Bolsonaro has been stabbed. Despite his policies, I hope he will be okay. Whoever it was who stabbed him needs to go to prison.

Stepping just one step back, though, and coldly calculating the political impact of this, if he recovers this will probably ensure that he will be the next president of Brasil.
