Shipping and taxes are two different things, though. Although I would have thought that Brazil is not that heavy on taxating their population. The taxation in Paraguay is very low (and consequently the social security net is not very extensive), so I always thought that taxation across Latin America was uniformly quite low. Could of course be that I am simply a bit naive on that topic. ^^

Yes, you are. Why do you think we have the most expensive Big Macs, iPhones and PS4s in the world, mate? Because we can afford it? Not really. Import fees run up to 90% of the products, generally, along with other compound taxes. Not to mention all the other taxes, that most people do not even know they're paying - embedded in most consumer products and services. It's that bad.
If, at least, the public services were on par with our funding of them...

Oh, I thought that Brazil had stopped with the extra high import taxes when they stopped using ISI (Import Substituting Industrialization) in favor of a more free trade happy policy.

Although you probably can get cheaper electronics through Ciudad del Este from Paraguay. ^^ Can't help you with the Big Macs, though.

Paraguay is always an option. But they charge import fees just the same, after a certain amount. Some people try to smuggle things, but they tend to get caught.

Yeeeeah, that was what I was implying with Ciudad del Este. It's famous (at least in Paraguay) for all the smuggling which is going on there.

I have some relatives (on my wife's side) that do go there regularly, shopping for clothes, perfumes and some electronics. Never had the courage, myself. I did go there, when I was eight (going to Iguaçu Falls and then, there), and mostly I remember buying an almost complete set of He-Man toys (before I even knew that a TV show existed) and a very nice Optimus Prime.

None of which survived until my adolescence.

What a shame.

Yeah, my old Star Wars toys got lost somewhere in my childhood, too. Thus is life, I guess.

I had the first generation Optimus Prime (with metallic parts) produced in the early 80s during the Transformers craze. I think I still have it somewhere.

If I found it, its going to be sold.

Well, currently I am definitely not very enamored with the way they have written the EU for the last decade (outside of Star Wars: Legacy, which was crazy good), but since it all recently was de-canonized, one can hope that the new stuff will be better.

Although, as toys go, that "black" line seems nice, doesn't it?

I still have all of mine plus all the ones I collected as an adult. Some are worth a bit of money now, but I'll never sell.

@Beto: While I am a bit nostalgic about my old toys, I am not about to buy new ones. I much prefer roleplaying books and fantasy / science fiction novels nowadays.

Customs, yeah, I can't spell. I got a letter today, I have to find my transaction paper and e-mail it and pay a lot of additional money on top. Great. I'm never buying movies from Japan again. Sorry, I know some people are all over this, I get it, I really don't have the money. The most I can do is by books, manga and some smaller figurines (seeing as how the price limit on when you get customs has been lowered significantly over the years). -_- Well, at least the one thing I spent on I really love and enjoy. Sorry for the rant.
