Well, to be honest, Kawamori has always been kind of a "out with the old, in with the new!" kind of guy. Past characters get a lot of shout-outs, but almost never appear in future shows (with the obvious exception of Max and Milia). He also likes to subvert expectations, so making Mirage not live up to her grandparents seems to be him another case of that.

New Album out for thoses who know how to grab it
quick verdict
Freya Seikan Hikou - I dont think she can hit the notes right? seems a bit off to me
Mikumo Diamond Crevasse - Trying to hard?????? Like it doesnt sound right either.
I can only assume ive been so seeped in with Sheryl singing hers and Ranka singing hers that anything else sounds weird???

It'll be a few years until I can listen to Frefre singing without a massive cringe. Passing on this.

Honestly, who really thought JUNNA (as much as I like her) could actually live up to May'n as Sheryl? I mean... honestly? It boggles the mind.

I couldn't write this any more nicely than I have so I thought against posting on main board LOL
Quote:
Freyja Seikan Hikou - Uhg...that was actually a bit grating. On first impression it was just...loud. Everything felt really lacking in nuance and just...loudddd. It's fine as a character song piece on any old anime given how committed the singer seems in voice acting through it, but as a Delta special track it's just....uhg. I wasn't expecting much but I'm likely not playing that song on my playlist ever again.
As far as hitting notes- She's hitting them fine but her timings are a bit off. Sometimes she starts a tad early or drags out the ends longer than she should.
Mikumo Diamond Crevasse - It actually...sounds fine as far as trying is concerned. May'N has forced far worse on Aimo in the past. It does however sound like JUNNA's not pronouncing some of her syllables properly for style points (I'm not sure how to explain this, that's the best I can do) and the fact gets really repetitive at the end because it happens so damn often. I don't know who produced this shit but they should have gotten her to knock that off (I mean ffs her voice is distinctive enough without that BS), but for whatever reason nobody was managing the teenager. (Or Minori for that matter. Latter crit is likely more producer being a lazy git)
(+Added on later: More bitching about the production quality:
The bridge for Diamond Crevasse is actually quite nice...in parts. She actually sounds pretty good on the riffs cus it sounds really Junna, but for whatever reason her biggest belt was really muted sounding...so there was just no real distinctive drive up to climax. The backup vocal tracks were also really poorly mixed in...like...you can TELL they sound separate which is never a good thing)
Further annoyances about the two songs...they sound like karaoke. I expect this standard to be okay on like youtube (or nicos) but the fact they just took the existing voiceless tracks and just recorded a voice on it sort of pisses me off, especially seeing as fans of the series keeps going on about how well their albums are selling. Is it really so hard to give them their versions? I mean people on the internet make arrangements all the damn time, can this company not do their job without being spectacularly lazy?
In the end it provided nothing new to the songs and just sated curiosity. Moving on.
To the rest of the album...
GIRAFFE BLUES ~Kaname Solo Requiem~
This was...actually really nice. Like way better than the tv shit show version and I'm pretty sure I consider this the best version of all of the Giraffe Blues. I'm actually pissed they didn't fit this version in with the piano and went for the crappy group acapella instead. Uhg...the choices, they continue to make me mad.
Welcome to Walküre World (New Version)
Wow...the cheesefest on this thing. It's 2 frekkin whole minutes of instrumentals, most of which is flight of the concords before they start introducing their characters........
I'm guessing this is for the stage shows but thank god this atrocity doesn't exist in-show. gave me flashbacks of the digimon evolution songs. I'm sure there's more singing past the introduction but I had to turn it off. Just...no.
Namidame Bakuhatsuon (feat. Claire Puddle)
Nothing new. The song never really matched the Macross scene (more regular idol stuff) but it's always been kinda cute for me. Nice to see a full version.
Bokura no Senjou ~Freyja Solo~
Flipped through it quickly. It's in show, nothing new.
Bokura no Senjou ~Mikumo Solo~
Not really sure why they keep padding these albums with like...basically single vocal songs. There's nothing new to them besides one voice being in it, which kind of becomes even more irrelevant when it comes to the songs where Mikumo has always been the starting member. Eh.
Nothing Stops Walküre (NEW)
This might actually be the strongest "Walkure" Song over all. I mean Walkure Attack has better high moments but has a problem with over crowding voices sometimes, but this one gets it right all the way.
......................................I guess that's why it's not in the show.

Oh Matts, I felt that right here in the kokoro.
And yeah...I do find I feel massive cringe whenever I hear minori's Freyja voice now. Funnily enough as mad as I use to be about Ranka/nakajima it was never to this degree. Unlike nakajima I actually like minori too so it's a damn shame.

I don't get it honestly. As cute as I think she is with triangle hairpins and a ribbon scrunchy (.......................cry) This is some serious false advertising.

How popular is Mirage in Japan?

Thats a good question. She isn't polling on New Type the way Sheryl was and while her following on the JPN fan art scene is sizable, its nothing compared to the Galactic Fairy.

Eh let's not be too generous about this, Mirage's polling and art fanbase doesn't even match up to Freyja who in turn doesn't get as much fanart as RANKA did let alone Sheryl.
That's like comparing a sandcastle to a mountain.

Oh, I am hardly being generous, but we aren't talking about Frejya and the Walkure, which, to their credit, managed to defeat Hikaru Utada on the chart.

I still feel like comparing her to walk is more accurate than Frontier, which was a good show with great characters. I'd argue Mirage is the only person in Delta with any development and more than just a one note persona. Eh, whatev.
Iunno how Hikki has been doing, never been a huge fan. Walküre gets a lot of love from the creeps making up the idol/anime waifu base. And I imagine Fre gets her fanart from mostly shoujo fans, a genre I am way too old for... I cringe when I read my old manga volumes. And I'm sure there are Rankastans who are happy genkiloli won, even though it was never a question + singing is going to kill her in a few years. Idk some people went on about the ruins having that effect. But from my understanding windos can overuse their powers via their runes and since Var is still well and about in the universe, Freyja will have to use it a lot. Eh, well. I half give credit to the show that they didn't throw in a last minute cure. Though we will never see the goripika couple deal with the issue either. Ya know, the interesting bit.
I'm just glad Mirage gets some love from the staff. Even if late. And Heinz unless holyfloatinghead doesn't say anything Heinz'll kick the bucket soon post the finale, and good riddance to him and the windbag dynasty.
So much salt.

@Tak:
Ehhh...my point was actually more that it's pretty unfair to compare Mirage who basically has a shafted role in her show and barely even makes it (if at all) to the Newtype top 10 polling even during the airing of the show, to a character with a far larger role in a different, more popular macross show? Especially when from what I remember Sheryl continued to dominate those newtype polls even past the show's airing.
Freyja dropped to 4th by September, 7th by October, Hayate still clung on to 6th by November, but Freyja's gone off the top 10 around then and hasn't showed up since from what I can find on the interwebs. Hayate's still 8th by December and both totally gone by January + Feb.
(....on a sort of related but not really note Ranka has popped up out of nowhere for February 2017 along with some Code Geass....cus reasons)
---
For reference :
September 25 2008 was the final date of airing Frontier
November 2009 - first movie
February 2011 - 2nd movie
--
From what I managed to scavenge, Sheryl's rankings:
2009:
March (1st), June (3rd)
2011:
March (1st), April (1st)
2012:
March (6th) April (7th) May (4th), June (4th), July (5th), September (6th), October (5th), November (4th)
I mean sure they had a lot of material coming out during that time (Stage performances, Movies, extra CDs, etc etc) but the fact remains she somehow stayed pretty dominant between each major release and afterwards. When her fans were reminded of her existence she'd bump straight up to first and linger there in top 10 for some time.
So..yeah. Hi Sandcastle, meet a mountain.

I was doing my best to leave things alone but that's not-- Fucking hell.
That's not what Off Key
means
.
This dipshit doesn't know what they're talking about.
And there's a difference between wanting to have heard a version of the song for fanservicy reasons (I'd still kill for a May'N Seikan Hikou. Don't frekkin judge me, Prison Break Humming In movie2 made me a believer) and downright saying a song would be better if their favourite squirrel voiced vocal style and background crowding is shoved into it.
Forget that Diamond Crevasse was made fully with the singer in mind, that it has tonal variance and emotion- that simplicity and the voice itself is what makes the song.
No it needs more goddamn glitz because moe reasons.

Haha yeah a proper Diamond Crevasse duet with Ranka??? That version would be so off-balance and cringey.
