Celebrity deaths aside, because they are exactly that, celebrities. While we mourn for their passing, their demise have very little, if any impact on our daily routine. Personally, this year had been pretty good to my own endeavors, thus while 2016 had not progressed in a manner we want, I'd say my life had been going pretty well.

On a side note, Disney could get a $50 million insurance payout upon Carrie Fisher's death. Report has it that she completed episode VIII, so thats good. Though this is the most expensive insurance payout, ever.

Speaking of celeb wellbeing, Charles Manson is reportedly in critical condition. I'd say about time, it makes no sense for us to continue paying for the bastard to languish in prison.

Agh... Oh well.

On a more positive note, I finally watched the Magnificent Seven remake and... it didn't completely suck? It's actually a very nice movie? Huh. Who would have thought...

The entire point of life sentence imprisonment is to have the guy live as long as possible in a cage, bereft of his freedom. I think that is a good punishment for people like him.

Yep. "Not completely suck" is what I'd also use to describe it. It's a competently-made western-action which is quite enjoyable to watch, but the characterization seemed thinner and not as noble as the previous Magnificent Seven movie with Yul Brynner in the past. And of course, it can't even hope to touch the original Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai quality in terms of storytelling and cultural importance, though it obviously tried to champion diversity by presenting a more "colorful" team to a mixed result.

Exactly. It couldn't hope to touch the original one (which, I'm not ashamed to admit, I enjoy more than Seven Samurai, while nonetheless also conceding that the latter is the better movie), but it's an enjoyable movie session.

Another cool movie night: Train to Busan. Now that's a cool zombie flick. And it also reminded me of Snowpiercer, in all the right ways. Also, it had some nice tearjerker moments. Highly recommended!

Train to Busan is like Godzilla, in that they both poke at the utterly inefficient, overwhelming government bureaucracy of Korea and Japan.

OTOH, there are rumors suggesting making Leia a Disney Princess, thoughts?

Technically, she's already one, so what would that change?
All kidding aside, I think that would be awesome.

I really enjoyed The Great Wall. If more American/Chinese co-productions are this epic, I'm all in!

Its not going to be released until Feb. 2017 here... which is a shame. Zhang's epic films are sort of a hit or miss. His epic Hero & House of Flying Daggers were followed by WTF!Curse of the Golden Flower, which is then followed by the MEH!The Flowers of War... so we'll see, keeping my fingers crossed.

It is a lot more Hollywood'ized than Hero or House of Flying Daggers, yet the traditional chinese theme of self-sacrifice and subservience to a cause are very present in the movie. If people expect this to be the typical "white savior comes to be better than the primitive natives" BS, they are going to be surprised. At about no point the chinese are not portrayed as the more advanced civilization.

The notion that China would produce a movie with 'White-savior' complex is absolutely absurd. Chinese audiences are not even remotely interested in questioning this notion. Its more often Western SJWs with nothing better to do with their time. This even extends to the late Roger Ebert, who questioned the casting choice of having Christian Bale play an American priest as opposed to a Chinese actor, not realizing that a Chinese priest would have been shot on sight and no story would follow to ever become a movie.

Nevermind that this is a production from a country that banned a NIKE commercial because Kobe Bryant defeated a Dragon in basketball... yeah...

Well, it was a good movie. I'm looking forward to seeing the female lead (Tiang Jing) in Kong: Skull Island and the second Pacific Rim.

Oh, I want to see this movie so baaaaaaaaaaad...

Sure, the effects were great, but I find it iffy as to why they needed two pilots as opposed to one to operate. The explanation in-verse was half-baked and not convincing. Then there is that last scene, where you needed to plant a nuke underseas.

Thats where I thought... why not just send a submarine?
