Yeah, I don't think they are putting themselves in Ainz's shoes. It's not that difficult. When you play a game, and one of your units die, you might feel a bit painful because it cost you resources to make one, but not because it's an individual who just perished. This is Ainz's approach to the new world, everything is still being considered mostly in game terms.
Of course, they'd argue something along the lines of "they have names, and personality too!". Well, I can make names up for my NPC characters in a video game and give them personality, what's the difference?
But I mean, this has been going on for what... five months? Man...

They did, in the novel, but if you watch episode 9 again, only two ever showed up. Everything was calculated by Ainz, even with presenting the maids. Ainz really wanted to show off, but he was probably unaware that it became a very sharp diplomatic assault against the Blood Emperor's conscious.
