Also, I hate the genderswap in Fate franchise because that's not what the game originally was. Arthur(ia) being a petite chick was supposed to be unique in the first FSN but since she brought so much money, the whole Fate franchise now has been degraded to "Just show us the hot chicks with fancy costumes & origins!"-franchise. And they mostly use genderswapped figures to achieve it.

I don't mind franchise that aimed for genderswapped figures from the get-go like Oda Nobuna.

Eh, I don't know. It's a fantasy universe, so genderswapping characters ain't that much of a problem with me. I mean, there are still lots of male heroes/historical figures showing up and to prevent a sausage fest it's an okay plot device, IMO.

That's the thing though. Why does it have to be prevented? Nowadays, showing off a plethora of hot chicks is the easy & lazy way for an animangames property to grab the attention of consumers (aka. otakus). Just look at various mobile games in the appstore. Almost all of them flash the sensuality of their female characters on the front cover so to speak. And genderswapping established figures is one of their irritating methods to achieve it. For example, if you promise me an encounter between Miyamoto Musashi & Leonidas, naturally I expect & picture both of them as these gruff male warriors like in the history. But Fate just had to lazily please the lowest common denominators by turning Musashi into a hot chick and putting her in the spotlight while the male version of Musashi is pushed aside into obscurity.

Original FSN game was supposed to be above that. The game gained so much traction for its groundbreaking narrative, not how many chicks, ass-shots, boob-shots, thigh-shots & armpit-shots that it had, but now Fate franchise has come down to that. Quality-wise, now the current Fate are not really above other games anymore aside from it being mega-convoluted & mega-popular. Look at Grand Order game. Most of the conversations among the fans are just revolving around how to get your favorite waifus through gacha.

I miss the time when we had FSN, Ataraxia, Zero & Kara no Kyoukai. The last one is not my favorite but at least there's really something going for it aside from chicks in fancy costumes.

Because it's fun? I mean, obviously not for you, but for enough people so that it makes the series profitable, obviously. Treating this franchise like any sort of historical drama is the wrong approach, IMO.

You're talking like "fun & good writing that's not relying on fanservice" can't go hand-in-hand. I already gave you examples of Nasuverse outings that can blend them well (FSN, Ataraxia, Zero & KnK). I don't want historical drama, I want more of those examples, not outings like Prisma Illya & GO.

Of course it's fun for a lot of people & profitable. That's why they cater to the lowest common denominators in the first place.

But here's the thing: anyone can cater to the lowest common denominators because that's the easiest thing to do. That's fine and all but you need to do more than that to gain my respect (which FSN & Zero did). After all, we are discussing about my view, right? That's why I quoted your first comment above.

Actually I am of course representing my point of view and comparing it to yours. Everybody has his own standards. Mine are that I find the Nasuverse female versions of male characters mostly refreshing (loli jailbait characters like Jack the Ripper aside, which are just in bad taste overall).

And I like my sausage-fest when it's well-written. Sausage-fest (not yaoi or reverse-harem) is not a bad thing when writers know how write a good story with it (looking at Saint Seiya & Gundam IBO).

Well, The Lord of the Rings trilogy is my favorite movie of all time (yep, I'm counting the three movies as one big movie), so I can agree with that. I am not saying that an all-male cast of main characters is bad. But in an anime series about wizards conjuring up heroic spirits from the past to beat each other up, I can totally live with some creative liberties.

Anyone here a comic reader, specifically the X-Men? Because I think I need someone to vent to.

What did they do this time?

<takes a deep breath>

Alright, here's what happened: Jonathan Hickman, one of the better writers at Marvel admittedly, penned a grand story arc which retroactively retcons the entire X-Men's existance and purpose.

Basically, there's a character named Moira McTaggert, who was revealed to be a mutant with the mutant power to live her life again when she dies. And in about every version of her life after the second one (where she tries to do a cure on mutants and gets killed by Mystique and Destiny in a very gruesome "never do that again or *this* will happen" manner), mutants get hunted down by humanity in one way of another. Peaceful co-existance simply doesn't work.

So, armed with the knowledge of by now nine lives, she tells Charles Xavier about this before he creates the X-Men and he decides to do things fundamentally different. Only that he waits until the comic events of last year before finally revealing his grand plan and doing a grand mutant coalition and creating a mutant home on Krakoa (the living island from back when the X-Men started). His coalition (containing such illustrous characters as Magneto, Apocalpyse and Sinister) bribe the human governments by selling them mutant drugs which cure cancer, Alzheimer and all kind of terrible illnesses, prolong life and so on.

Most mutants move to Krakoa and form their own society, which seems to be a giant dance party and orgy. They bring back about all dead mutants, because Xavier saved their brainwaves for decades and found a way to create new bodies for them with the help of some other mutants. They invent their own language, form their own government and generally even the good guy mutants adopt a "humans are pitiable creatures" attitude. "You're only a human" is a phrase which is often said in one form or another.

Now, the story itself was well told. But there are some really, really fundamental problems with it, which make me extremely uncomfortable.

1.) Xavier is a fucking sociopath. As far as this story goes, he allowed all the shit which went down for decades in the comics (lots of deaths, sometimes multiple times, tons of emotional trauma) to happen to the X-Men (not even to mention all the people who died in the events surrounding them), just to get to this point in time. He (also Moira McTaggert) faked emotional distress for decades when someone died, even knowing that they would come back eventually. This screws up his character immensely.

2.) This whole storyline pretty much proves without any doubt that humanity in the Marvel Universe will not, under any circumstance, co-exist with mutants. The problem here is humans in the MU fundamentally are now provably incapable of accepting mutants and will always go full Auschwitz on them at some point, even to their own detriment. Unless this basic new premise is somehow reversed, the premise of the X-Men, as it was since the series inception in the sixties, is dead, dead, dead. As grand as this story is, this is such a fundamental change that I think it cannot be just ignored in any future story. Any X-Men leader who will try the peaceful cooperation approach again will come off as a mentally unfit goober to the audience.

3.) And, to reiterate, the main X-Men characters are displaying a very arrogant and snide side which is largely out of character for them. Kitty Pryde, my favorite Marvel character since I started reading X-Men, is written so fucking atrociously by her new writer, Gerry Duggan, that I don't even recognize the character. She's fucking besties with fucking EMMA FROST now, ugggghhhhh. Also, Duggan obnoxiously decided to have her call herself "Kate" now and insist that other characters call her that, which also gets my goat. At least it makes it easier for me to disassociate this hollow shell of her from the real Kitty Pryde.

There are ways to retcon this and eventually they will. They just need to shoot Moira and this whole world goes away and they just can say "and now things proceeded differenty". I'm assuming that the out-of-character stuff from the characters is somehow due to mind alteration by this version Xavier.

But the real problem, the MU humanities inability to co-exist peacefully with mutants, kills one of the most basic premises of the X-Men dead. And I don't know if the comics will ever be able to get back to that premise after this storyline is done.

Ergh, yeah, at some point this whole thing will be retconned. However, as I put it in point two of my rant, it will be very difficult to put the genie back in the box in regards to human/mutant cooperation. This storyline makes it very, very clear that it simply cannot work.
