Oh, boy. I guess we'll see if it comes into cinema's here and if my friend wants to see it. If it flopped so terribly in the US, maybe the distributor's here will want to avoid it.

We didn't go to the movies this Thursday, because there the weather did a sudden downturn and my friend feared about the thin cape of ice on the roads. Understandable. We might see Glass this Sunday, though, if things shake out well.

Coincidentally, Thursday was when Southern California experienced its strongest rainfall in recent history.

As you know, rain is like kryptonite to California drivers.

Then there is good ol’ Edison, a power company that has managed to erect awe-inspiring edifices to defy the strongest of Earthquakes, but somehow unable to keep traffic lights working in the rain...

Finally managed to watch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, yesterday. OMFG, what a great film! The visuals, the music, the story... Everything was top-notch, here.

I need more of this. NAO.

Oh boy, I'm in the mood to beat a dead horse today. So...which one should I pick? I know, let's go with this one:



Oh and....Black Panther is now nominated as "Best Picture" for the Oscars. Such a baffling choice considering 2018 is filled with better non-blockbuster films. I guess this is the point where even Oscars will stoop low enough in order to get the high ratings and popularity.

They wanted to institute a new category of "Popular Movie" just to avoid this brouhaha with Black Panther. Seems they can't win.

I saw that little gig Mortal Engines, which proved slightly difficult to follow, especially if one has no knowledge of the source material.

The entire thing feels like a live-action anime, and reminded me of Last Exile for some odd reason.

The final part is absolutely golden, with lines like:

"Your mother has never told you..."

"But I guess you already know..."

If you seen the movie, you will understand that vibe...

Yeah, the movie kinda rushed through its story. I actually found the male lead to be kinda charming, though. If he'd play a character more like a rogue, he'd be a dead ringer for a young Han Solo, IMO. The character who really was badly cast was the asian lady. They wanted her to be cool, but the character came off as very stiff.

In other news, I saw Ralph Breaks the Internet on Thursday and, like The Incredibles II, it was a solid movie, but kinda uninspiring. While Incredibles II suffered from a big case of lack of originality, Ralph II kinda was overcommercialized, IMO. The message of the movie (Don't smother your friends with overprotectiveness, don't be clingy) was good enough, but I simply wasn't as charmed as by the first part.

Eh, also kind of out of place. I understand being cool often meaning standing out, but the hair gel man... where did you get that much hair gel!?

Also saw the movie Polar. The MC is what happens when you cross John Wick and Solid Snake, 'nuff said...

Although Mikkelsen is far more convincing as a polyglot than Reeves could ever hope to be.

Well, Mads Mikkelsen is always a win. The color grading on this movie is quite interesting. I probably need to find a friend with Netflix and watch this, after Star Trek Discovery's season is finished and I can watch the whole thing all at once. ^^ Thanks for pointing out the movie.

I have but one impression: Why the hell do they even need live-actors for this shit?

Ask James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez, I guess.

This movie will be interesting for many reasons. Will this be a James Cameron (written) movie which will not massively succesful? Will it be a decent anime adaptation? How strange will the anime eyes on the female MC really look?

Well, I finally saw the Bird Box. Good movie, but I didn't think it was extraordinary.

Although I cannot comprehend the blindfall craze. Especially after reading about a teen who got into a car accident by doing exactly what had been done in the movie, driving relying solely on sensors...

Seriously, that should have been a no-brainer from the get go. Come on now...

I've just seen Overlord. Not what I expected. Definitely not Call of Duty Nazi Zombies, but more Wolfenstein, complete with videogame caricature of Germans, with one particular Captain screaming "thousand year reich" every chance he gets. Yeah...

Said captain is played by Pilou Asbaek, who is also Euron Greyjoy, who is also Danish. I wonder if Scandinavian actors these days are the goto people for playing all things European, from Russians in John Wick to Germans in Overlord. I think the last time I saw a Scandinavian actor portraying anyone Scandinavian was in 2011's Thor. And that's erm... weird.

The movie is OK, not great, not bad, just OK. It also doesn't take itself all too seriously. Although it should be noted that the first twenty minutes of the film never, ever happened in real life. That's abusing historical artistic license to the max, but meh...

Wow, Liam could've gone Taken on some black dudes 40 years ago before Taken was even a thing .

Overlord was pretty rad. I really liked the guy playing the German captain (in a "he's a good villain to hate" way).

And I think it was an actor from the Netherlands (or was it Belgium?) who did a really good job as the Putin look-alike in Red Sparrow. So it's not all Scandinavians. ^^

I was totally expecting a major takedown of massive zombie hordes. *Sigh*

The funny thing is that Russians are nowhere near as obsessed with spy thrillers the way Hollywood is.

Many Russian films during Soviet times, and especially these days deal with the Great Patriotic War more than anything. Most are crap, although there are some truly exceptional ones.

And their EPIC films are truly EPIC with a capital E. I cannot think of anything in recent memory that can top War and Peace.
