I have Waterloo on collection. It was directed by Sergei Bondarchuk as well. Rumor has it that a 4 hour version exists, but my attempts at hunting a copy down had been unsuccessful.

Also, I really don't care for Liam Neeson. His heyday is long gone, with Taken being more or less a parody as time passes.

I was never a big fan of those movies, which are frankly jingoistic and quite racist dreck. However, I have no problem with Liam Neeson himself. That recent controversy about him seems the typically overblown super-outrage which seems to be the norm nowadays.

Just because the movie is often quoted and parodied, doesn't make the movie itself a parody. Otherwise, many classic movies can also be considered parodies just because they often mentioned & mimicked.

As for Liam Neeson, such an unfortunate event. Here's a guy who tried to be honest & open about his experience about 40 years ago where the mind of his (much) younger self was consumed by rage & vengeance for about a week (because his female best-friend was raped by a black man) before he snapped back to being reasonable and didn't result in any casualties yet the PC-crowds of today will still crucify him for it.

It's not like Mel Gibson who were caught red-handed of being a racist or James Gunn being caught via Twitter. Liam voluntarily being open about the dark period during his youth, something that already passed him four decades ago during a wholly different time, different setting (Ireland) and different culture, yet those who desire Liam's downfall treat it like it just happened yesterday. God forbid a man can change for the better after decades of life experience. I'm really getting so sick of the PC crowds even though I'm Asian which should be among the minority in Hollywood.

Now what? Are they going to replace Liam in MIB 4 like how they replaced Kevin Spacey in that certain kidnapping movie? I wouldn't be surprised if they do that later on.

I think this was just an unfortunate case of not knowing when to keep one's mouth shut. No one needed to know that particular tidbit about him, and that he felt the need to publicly address it seems... weird, to me. Hindsight is 20/20. I guess.

^ This event actually made me curious of the movie Cold Pursuit that he's promoting. Maybe the movie really has something in it that triggered Liam to answer the journalist's question using his own darker life experience.

You misunderstood completely. By parody I mean the Taken series is becoming a parody of itself and its characters. Liam should quit those while the third time is a charm. I feel the same way about James Bond movies.

Now that the next Terminator and Rambo are due, I am not sure what to expect.

As far as racism is concerned, it's an overblown problem, and often magnified by the media, who wants us to believe that we are living in 1860s America. It's not a problem when you don't want it to be, period.

Yeah, right. That's not really how it works, Tak. You may even ignore whatever happens all you want, but the effects are still there - for anyone that wants to see.

There are folks out there who would rather interpret the tiniest infraction as racism, period. I can list a dozen examples from my professional lifespan just how often this occur.

Yeah, so back to Taken being a parody...

It certainly is so over the top in its jingoism, that it could be taken as a parody. The later parts straight out should have a laugh track in some parts. "Now throw grenades blindly into the street" "What a great idea!".

I LOL'ed.

Not to say Taken jingoism does not exist, which is funny considering Liam is Irish. But nevermind that...

Believe it or not, I've seen worse, far, far worse, and they are usually not Hollywood productions. Those in contrast would actually make modern Hollywood jingoism believable, or at the very least, tolerable.

In another news, Deadpool 2 is now officially the second highest grossing R movie, topping even its predecessor.

Oh, don't worry, the jingoism did translate very well to Europe. Swarthy evil eastern European guys doing bad things to western young ladies? Yeah, the stereotype exists here as well.

And good for DP. Let's see what Disney does with the franchise.

Actually I was thinking of jingoism depicted by countries such as Russia and China. The latter especially, is probably the worst of its kind.

I tend to be somewhat of a fan of Russian cinema, because I hold dear to the belief that once in a blue moon, a great production could surface. Though I absolutely acknowledge that 99.999999999% of Russian movies are utter, and irredeemable crap.

Also, not too long ago, I had the pleasure of watching The Unknown Soldier/Tuntematon sotilas (2017), a Finnish film depicting the Continuation War. Now that, is a proper, gritty war movie.

Well, I couldn't say. I have so far almost completely missed Russian cinema. As far as I am concerned, the biggest work of art from the eastern part of Europe is The Witcher 3.
