I am just waiting on Avengers: Endgame.

Others can really take a back seat. Captain Marvel is too Superman for me and lacks character.

Nobody yet knows how Dark Phoenix is going to play out, but I'm very skeptical as well.

And I wouldn't want to pre-condemn Captain Marvel to "lack character". Nobody thought that Antman could do well, too.

May I just say, that I watched Antman because of Michael Douglas?

It was overall a pretty good superhero movie. But Douglas was really quite fun in it.

That moment when he showed the keychain was absolutely golden.

Then a T-34 was summoned!

Now if we could shrink the Hulk too...

Also, what's the matter with Superman?

Superman is about the last superhero that would be on my radar right now...

OTOH, I just started on Orville Season 2. As expected, Bortus never cease to amaze.

STD just fucked up the continuity of Section 31 beyond all belief. Bloody hell.

I haven't still seen the series. Sadly it ain't on Netflix Germany.

On the bright side, Alita broke even at the box office, so that's a good sign, I guess...

Well, that probably means it'll get a sequel someday. With Alita being fully digital, they only need to take care that Waltz doesn't get too old. ^^

Cold Powder, the latest Liam Neeson revenge flick, was... odd. Mostly people dying in really casual ways and some scenes where the director focuses on people doing extraordinary ordinary things, like a few guys carrying a coffin and then using a lift to lift the coffin (and themselves) into a truck. That goes on for like 15 seconds. I guess the director tried for situational black comedy and it just was... odd.

Anyway, I'll only see Captain Marvel in two weeks, since my friend is out of town. I guess I'll have to avoid spoilers for one week. I hope the next week isn't full of man-babies making outrage videos to drive their views, too.

A couple of fair reviews for Captain Marvel from reviewers who aren't in it for any agenda. These are sensible reviews which aren't blindly hating the movie nor worshiping it to an unreasonable degree:


So, it seems my gut feelings from watching the Cap M trailers are right. The MC is basically distant, flat and doesn't have enough personality or charm for a good portion of the movie and the whole enterprise was mostly elevated by the things that surround the MC (Nick Fury, Monica Rambeu, the cat, the leader Skrull, etc). It doesn't sound like it's worth a ticket price and the effort to come to the cinema IMO.

Obviously, I still need to see the movie someday, but it seems like I did some consecutive bulls-eye after bulls-eye when it comes to judging the movie from the trailers. Some of them (like The Predator) I wished I was wrong.

Yeah, the trailers have been somewhat uninspiring. We'll have to see how the movie itself pans out for each of us.

Even Chris Stuckmann said the movie is bland and disappointing where Phase 1 Marvel movies like Captain America: First Avenger was executed better.

Alright, that is a really substantive critique of the film by Stuckman. Still, gotta see it myself to make my mind up. But if the character is written as Chris said here, it's a bit sad that the writers and the director went with the 100% conventional superhero route.

I mean, most of these "balanced" or "negative" reviews seem kinda hackneyed, to me. Not that I'm gonna bother watching them, but... I dunno. God, even one of The Hollywood Reporter videos had "SJW", "NPC" and "gender affirmation" tags on it. One review I saw had the title "Brie Larson is fine, but Captain Marvel sucks".

I'm not gonna give any of those clicks or views, personally. But to each their own.

Hopefully, I'll watch the movie this weekend.

Wait, are you referring to the ones Obelizk linked? I haven't seen the ScreenJunkies one, since it is way too long, but Jahns and Stuckman do short videos which hit all important points and are not hackneyed at all.

I wasn't that specific, Maggie, since I'm sure I'm not their intended audience, anyway. No Youtube reviews, for me.

I'm just pointing out the apparent state of affairs in that most of the critics raising issues with the movie seem to be complaining about "girlpower" (or the lack thereof) or the wooden acting of Ms. Larson (even if that was never a big problem in other similar movies) while, at the same time, proceeding to damn the movie with faint praise. I've read a critic saying that "after this wait, society deserved better" and yet another stating "it's just another Marvel movie". I mean, you can't really win.

That seems (to me, at least) a bit disingenuous.

Hm, okay. Again, I've not seen the movie, so I'll reserve any judgement until after that. Marvel has a really good track record, after all. And I really, really don't want to give the internet neckbeards with an anti-woman agenda any help.

HOWEVER, the pretty recent trend of writing female protagonists who have no weak spots or no romantic feelings toward anybody also doesn't sit right with me. I mean, give me Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor any day of the week, I prefer my hard-ass women to have a big human side, too.
