Alright, some last words on the season which just ended, to round out how the shows turned out, from "worst" to best.
BEM: Sadly I lost interest after the first three episodes, due to the protracted break the series took (three weeks, IIRC) and also because the overarching theme, i.e. the BEM crew helping people and getting betrayed for their trouble, did not really resonate with me.
Dr. Stone: I'm still fast-forwarding through this show every week to see how the plot is developing, but overall the whole interminable "save the village chiefs daughter" arc, which now has gone of for something like eight episodes out of now fourteen, is boring as hell. I'll probably continue to fast forward through the show each week to see if this ends up having more of a story in the end.
Granbelm: EEERRRRRRNNEEEEESSSSTTAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
Yeah, only gonna remember the series for the insane screaming fits.
Vinland Saga: Still ongoing, but although it has very nice animation and decent fight scenes, this ain't exactly my cuppa tea. The moody teenager MC and ruthless OP vikings are ruining it for me, to be honest. I mean, seriously, all the English are portrayed as basically only blood-filled piņatas to be smashed.
Maou-sama, Retry!: While this show had some cheap-ass animation, the self-referential humor and the characters put it a cut above the generic anime you normally get to see. I'm not sure if it will get a second season (the "to be continued" message at the end seemed to indicate so, but maybe they were just optimistic?), but I'd like to see a sequel.
Cop Craft: One of the most promising shows of the season, this was let down a bit by some really shitty fight scenes, where they basically went to rapidly cut still shots. But the characters were fun and felt like real human beings and the set-up of a city where two worlds connect was unique. Also, the characters are far from overpowered and get beaten the hell down all the time. I'd like to see more of it and I'll remember this show for a while.
DanMachi S2 Although this was my most anticipated show of the season, it was somewhat let down by drops in animation quality and being a bit too rushed for at least the first arc. Sadly no fight like the one against the Minotaur was to be seen this season, either, although Bell vs. Aisha round two was pretty nice. Hestia is still annoying as hell, but the rest of the cast remains great. And S3 has already been announced for next year, so that is something to look forward to. Maybe Obelizk will then get his Winter Soldier jollies.
Kanata no Astra A wonderful sci-fi exploration/mystery/comedy mix, this show pretty much came out of nowhere and wormed its way into my heart. With a good resolution (although a bit easy for everyone of the good guys), the really interesting part was the journey where the kids bonded and the characters developed. Highly recommended for people who haven't seen it yet.
Lord El-Melloi II-sei no Jikenbo: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note: And here is the best series of the past season, a show which built really well on Fate lore, had great characters and great visuals and didn't drop a stitch throughout the entire season. I think the only negative is that the cases were mostly solved through Waver putting together magic politics and mechanics in a way which viewers couldn't really logically follow. But the great character development, visual design and excellent fight scenes made more than up for it. I really hope this gets a S2, because it deserves it. Highest recommendations for Fate fans. Great music, too, btw.
