If anything, barring Quant. Strat. Hedge Funds, most jobs in "High Finance" are achieved through .. being articulate..

To be honest, the math is nothing particularly complicated in most jobs in finance, more of it is experience and expertise based. You are specifically thinking of math-based hedge funds .. most people on a S&T desk or in IB or in Credit Origination don't do much more complicated math than accounting..

Well, accounting is a slow and steady route to middle/upper-middle class..

Ha ha, high finance is hard to get into, and it's not for everyone. There's lots of specialty portions of finance that people don't know about. If you have any questions let me know, I'm happy to answer any question you may have, since I've worked in Vancouver (IB, 2 yrs) and Toronto (Equity Capital Markets, 1 yr, IB Special Situations 2.5 yrs).

The money in Canada in accounting isn't with the Big 4. I don't know about the U.S. but unless you're very specialized in niche areas of accounting (tax, forensic, etc.) or are a RM that brings in big clients, you're not gonna make very much. All the money in accounting is in industry -- i.e. controller, etc.

That said, not sure about your friend, but my friend is a CA (being unified into Canadian CPA) as a manager with .. mm.. ~5/7 years of experience was making $85K. I know when you first do your articles you get paid peanuts in the Canadian Big 4. I know someone that made ~30K right out of graduation. It goes up materially in the years post-articling.

Eh? There's a big difference between accounting/finance, finance and "high finance" -- it's very similar to NY in that regard. I don't think people are treated poorly by any means.. it all ties into expectations though. The pay ceiling is a lot lower here in Toronto vis-a-vis New York, but surprisingly taxes will likely be similar due to high municipal taxes in New York. I know my friend was working "middle office" finance/accounting/OPs and was making >$100K a year. I make .. materially more than that ..

Housing prices are insane. I expect a correction but with the recent BOC announcement on no rapid rate hikes, I'm not so sure, but rents and cap rates are still way below New York if that's your comparable. I think I posted a picture of my condo in the old [now closed/locked] social thread, brand new condo, pool, courtyard, etc. $1600 a month -- rents have moved up, closer to $1800 now -- for ~720 sq. ft? Probably would sell for $450-480k?

Yes, I understand you are not actually watching a dog and pony show. I am an investment banker y'know. I advise clients on M&A, refinancing and restructurings on distressed or "special" situations.

Hey Xin are you planning on returning to silver cross and draculea? It's a really good series imo and I would love to see the first two volumes finished
