Come to think of it, the recent serious/depressing anime I can think of are mostly manga adaptations. Anime originals are already rare, so ones with such content? Definitely hard to be greenlit. Ikuhara for one had to lie to get the ok for Sarazanmai's most controversial stuff.

By the way, you may want to check out Hidamari no Ki. It's an old show but it was only fully subbed recently. I found it to be a breath of fresh air.

Meh, honestly, have seen complaints about that for years. I think as someone that could compare the 2000s to the 80s would also see a huge difference.

Yes moeshit is abundant and so is commercialized aniplexshit, but it's not like there isn't a lot of serious anime out there. As for Geass not existing in this day and age; I think that's more of a product of its times.

Basically, it just sounds like "get of my lawn" to me.

At this point I think the only ones saying there’s no problem are the equivalent of climate change deniers. And I view the big hitters on PCs - idol management gangs, LN publishers et al - as the big polluters who profit from the system and refuse to change.

Thanks - interesting stuff. Taniguchi-san joining many other industry stalwarts in pointing this out, though there's no indication anyone in power cares.

Checked out the shows lined up for Summer, and I don't have as much to look forward to as I thought. Vinland Saga, Lord El-Melloi, and Astra lost in space are the only ones I'm sure will be good. I'm interested in a few others, but I'm rather cautious.

I can't really argue with that (although there are some differences, of course), but he does it extremely well.

Yep, him. If you liked those two series, Mix is definitely worth checking out. It takes place in the same setting as Touch thirty years later too.

Do you like Mitsuru Adachi's stories? The currently airing Mix has been really good. His character interactions have a unique flair you just can't find elsewhere.

17 was better than 18 IMO. But neither were great, that's for sure.
