Outside of equity which you usually do, does your current job require you to actively monitor futures?

I am quite disgruntled by my government's lack of oversight on the economy AND its relationship to the world economy. Right now we are in the middle of a socioeconomic mess and the start of a of a possible stagflation.

I love my country because of the mix of culture and racial tolerance, but I don't like the designation of someone who is detached from the working class of society as a minister.

If you want to find a job as an investment banker again here I can ask around who is pulling for higher level FTs; they like to take in foreigners for that role. Check with your company first to see if they have expat opportunities here, the government is shutting the tap on expats right now to placate the citizens because the incumbet party has got pretty much the lowest ratings in the last election.

You are pretty lucky to have the opportunity to work your way to the top. Most of the opportunities here are given away like free gifts to foreign talent. The middle class is vanishing because the lower end of this segment gets pushed downwards by inflation, and the higher end risk losing their upgrade opportunities to the high class with the influx of cheaper skilled workers instead of more employers.

And there is the various public education issue - people aren't exactly encouraged to save here and it is been lauded much that the CPF takes care of their age-old needs. It isn't true; pension or no pension plan, you still HAVE to save and invest.

Societal divide. Those with money and those who don't; I come from a middle-low income family and learned/earned everything myself.

He would be considered a high-income or expat's kid over here - putting him in line with the elite.

Not much. I served in '08. And we may be from different units so we may not know each other.

Being able to work overseas means he is probably a high flyer. I am more of a street-rat, so the chances of us meeting are not high.

Singapore isn't exactly the most exciting place to be if you're keen to build a career in investment banking. For a variety of reasons, our bourses don't attract as many new listings as those in Hong Kong. On the other hand, financial institutions here have built significant expertise in wealth management, particularly UBS, which opened a training campus here focusing on this service.

There is a very practical reason for this. Plenty of rich Indonesian Chinese park their assets in Singapore, which has by far the most secure and stable administration in the region. In recent years, rich Chinese have also started doing the same. I'm fairly certain the same can be said of Indian tycoons, though their presence is less noticeable.

From what I understand, financial institutions here are always on the lookout for people willing to work in back-office banking operations. People with expertise in bonds and other fixed-income instruments are also sought after.

    Insead has a Singapore campus.

I'm sure you're aware that Temasek is a Singapore sovereign wealth fund. Getting hired won't be easy. It does employ foreigners, but not usually at entry level. If you're thinking of Temasek, you may also wish to consider the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation.

In any case, there are plenty of banks and other financial institutions here, so your chances of finding something suitable is good, especially if you specialise in a niche area of finance.

I have absolutely no problems with "benevolent authoritarianism" as long as it's intelligent, which I hear it is for the most part, and politeness aside I have a rather low opinion of much of the electorate here in North America most times..
Just be aware that while Singaporeans love bitching about the Government, we don't necessarily take kindly to outsiders criticising our politics. Keep that in mind and you'll be fine no matter where you go.

An old friend of mine once gave me an advice on migration : before moving someplace, go there on vacation a couple of times, make a few real friends (recommended to include people on both sides of that society) and read up about it.

Given your pay and the currency conversion, I think you can easily afford a couple of properties - one to live and another to rent out, so both will offset the cost of living. Bank loan interest rates are still pretty manageable here (between 4-8%), you just have to spend properly. If you have a specific preference and need details, PM me and I see if I can pull up a contact or two.

Given your experience, provided that you speak English with some British accent, you should be able to find jobs that suit you - though I do recommend tapping some company contacts, or even get a few clients to pull strings for you to here. There is bound to be a sister company or VC your company has in Singapore.

I think TRL is a good person to go to for professional advice on the corporate landscape, given his nature of work and his extensive life experience (technically he is the oldest one of us here). Ascaloth is also a good contact if you need some leads to bolster your corporate credentials and likability should you get to work here, and the other locals here should be willing to lend a hand if they can spare it, each with their own expertise.

Take a vacation down here first and see if you like it. June and December are recommended times since they are school holidays, so are the second weeks of March and September. If you can spare 3 days, 9-11 November this year there is an anime convention and some of the Indonesian forum members are coming over, so you can jump in.
