I dunno I'm around 50/50 on the "classics" -- I really couldn't get into Fruits Basket and Karekano didn't do much for me but I loved Skip Beat... its actually still ongoing I think. Nana is one of my all time favorites as well... Ai Yazawa in general, really. S.A is underrated, Ouran is kinda overrated. I loved KnT but didn't get around to finishing the manga.

The line I tend to draw with shoujo or really any demographic is with how self insert/wish fulfillment-y it is. The "nice girl" who has no real defining traits other than how nice she is is one archetype I can't really stand.

I actually kinda enjoyed the Netflix LA adaptation; I've seen a couple solid adaptations of shoujo series on there. One Piece LA was a lot better than I expected though I have no real motivation to catch up on the 450 or so chapters I am behind

I do think that syndrome exists, but to me it doesn’t feel like it’s gotten any more extreme. In some circles I travel in I feel like VS 2 got more discussion than the first season did.I don’t think you can make a general statement - for example with Hataraku Maou-sama, it’s pretty clear the 2nd season was a big dropoff, but with Takagi-san or Rakugo Shinjuu it was clearly better. I think with VS specifically the S2 material is more divisive, because it totally changes in tone and style from the first. Some fans love it even more, some find it boring. All depends on the series, if you’re looking for reasons.
