Noto Mamiko eh? Good taste. I also love her unique voice acting. Might contribute a teeny bit to Kotomi's arc being your favorite? Well ... VA aside Kotomi is my fave heroine of the Clannad/After Story series.

As for the musical ep of Kurenai ... well, sometimes certain "silly" things just click with certain people for whatever reason. XD

Gotta agree with you though - last Fall's VA adaptations were not quite what I hoped they would be. Or perhaps they were frustrating because in some cases I could see that it would not have been very hard to make them better than they were.

Well you see ... for me this area of 2000-2010 VN adaptations is also an area I am decidely "biased" in because some of them (especially Clannad and After Story) had a large effect on me in a very personal way at a time when I could "hear them". The OP for Clannad After Story was also my main gateway into anime too. ^^

Kanon and Air were also influential, but more in an aesthetic way as contrasted with the "messages" they had to give.

But other VN adaptations in the time did not affect me as much. Sola has the incredibly lovely singing of Ceui peppered throughout it (which is a near-guarantee for success audio wise for me), but that is about it. However, the two seasons of EF did affect me, though in a negative way. The story of Yuko and Akira was way too painful for me and touched on far too many sensitive spots - that combined with the Shaftian animation stylistics made it hard. (Though there were arcs in the two seasons I liked.)

Moon Phase, Shuffle and Sola have stood the test of time together with the three KyoAni series.

In my opinion Hyouka especially is an extremely worthy series to bust into one's top ten, though. While I doubt very much if a series will be able to come along and bust into my top three (Aria series, Clannad/After Story and Kemono no Souja Erin), I would dearly love to be so surprised by something coming along and forcing it's place therein!

I just learned about the next KyoAni show from the most unlikely of sources - Pocari Sweat.

Pocari is already proclaiming his hated for the show. He's probably right. He'll probably hate it.

But I think you and I will probably like it.

    Here's the PV.

And here's a nice group shot.

Very early impressions - Main girl makes me think of Eru Chitanda's mind in Haruhi Suzumiya's body.

One of these girls looks a lot like Yuuki Yuuna's Itsuki, which would probably appeal to you.

What's your take on this upcoming KyoAni anime?

    A few quick things

1 - I didn't start following anime on a season-by-season basis until Summer 2009. For that reason, I can't say a lot about 2008 and the first half of 2009. There are some shows from that period that I ended up watching later on (Clannad being one obvious example), but none I watched as it aired, with maybe a couple exceptions (Code Geass, Shana). So there will certainly be considerable divergence between us for 08 and 09 for that reason.

    2. I have to admit I'm slightly disappointed that Madoka Magica never made your "classic+". I know you didn't love it as much as I do, but I nonetheless thought it was a show you held in high regard. However, when I consider the four shows that did make your "classic+", I have a theory as to what might be contributing to Madoka Magica not making it. I intend to share that theory with you over PMs later.

    3. Hyouka was in my Top 5 for its year, and it's also one of my all-time favorite anime shows, so there's a decent chance it would make "classic+" for me if I adopted your own rating system. Bake and SSY are two shows I liked a lot while they aired, and I still hold both in some degree of high regard, but I'm not sure how well they've aged for me. I haven't seen Kure-nai. So you're right that our "classic+" list would diverge a fair bit.
