Well bear in mind, I didn't watch the entire thing. But first off, we have a scenario where the premise of the series seems more or less built around girls getting together to commiserate and bond with light yuri overtones (sorry, but they are there) in a universe where guys might as well be on another planet. I get that this is the point, to some extent, or at least I think it is - that girls are clueless about guys to the point of comedy. But haven't we seen this basic premise about a thousand times? It seems like an unintentional symbol of the way males have become virtually extinct in romantic comedy, apart from the odd harem series and hideous freakshows like Oreimo and Papa Kiki.

Not to put too fine a point on it - and I know it could never happen - but this sort of show would be really interesting if it were a bunch of boys getting together to commiserate about how little they understand about girls. Now that would be something different and original - Love Lab I feel as if I've seen in its basic form many times over. It does have a spark of wit to it, I confess - with Ohta directing I think that's inevitable. But even if the execution is relatively fresh the premise feels very tired to me. I mean, I think it's ironic (perhaps again, intentionally) that for most of the series the only guy is a body pillow. And from what I see, when a couple of males are introduced (like the brother) they seem to be physical and metaphorical punching bags more than anything else.

And then... Maybe this is just me, but do you really find Riko a good MC? TBH I don't think she's an especially likeable person - she's kind of a jerk, really, and not in an endearing way. At least for me. I don't really find any of the cast all that likeable from I've seen - apart perhaps from Maki, who did prompt a few laughs from me in the couple of eps I watched.

Perhaps if I sat down and watched all 8 episodes, it might grow on me like a virus and I'd pick up the wavelength it's operating on the way I'm intended to, and it would connect with me on some genius, meta level as a show that satirizes and enlightens rather than seeming to be part of the problem instead.

I didn't think there was any way to slowly but surely that series - it's the best at episode cliffhangers I've ever seen. For me it would have been like eating one french fry a day. I marathoned the whole thing in about a month.

As for Love Lab, I did give it a try... You know, I feel as if maybe I'm not seeing the same things you're seeing. It's not bad or anything, but it played for me like an unintentional illustration of what's wrong with anime at the moment, and I found it more sad than funny for that reason. I'm sure there's a level it's operating on that isn't connecting with me, but that's how I felt watching it.

This is just an aside, but did you notice that the Love Lab OP is a blatant ripoff of the Minami-ke S1 OP?

Ha ha! I see you even promoted Love Lab to Guardian Enzo. There's a sure sign that my recommendation has been a hit with you!

Yeah, it is a shame that Love Lab is so under the radar. I'd probably support it for comedy of the year at the moment.

Anyway, I'm really glad this recommendation paid off for you, since I'm pretty sure you've tipped me off to some good anime shows in the past that I otherwise would have missed.

That's why I don't complain about shows like Free, mediocre though it is. Though truth be told, ghettoizing both genders in their own shows doesn't really help either - the only thing that really moves things forward is mixed-gender casts. And sorry, but I really can't count supporting appearances when the show is already half-over truly a mixed-gender cast.

P.S. I find it both hilarious and a little sad that when describing anime these days, one feels compelled to say "There's even 3 male cast members" as if they're describing pink unicorns...

    Yes, I see the contradiction.

As you say yourself, time is definitely an issue. I'll see if I can find a way to work a couple of episodes in sometime in the next couple of weeks.

No, haven't had a chance. I'm still having a hard time getting past the premise, to be honest.

Railgun S2 is actually good though (well... at least until the Sisters Arc... now it's fillers zzzz)
