I guess in some sense I'm wondering if Hana doesn't feel closer to Ame because of her love for his father, and how much of him she sees in Ame. When the chips were down, she seems to have completely forgotten about Yuki and went after Ame in a complete panic.

I've been thinking about the context of all this. I wonder - do you feel there's any deeper meaning to the fact that Hana went after Ame when the storm hit, and left Yuki to her own devices? Was that something symbolic in terms of her feelings? I know in practical terms Yuki was safe at the school, most likely, but it strikes me as interesting in light of all you've told me.

    Interesting... Dialogue really does matter!

Dare I say that sounds almost like a Ghibli plot twist? It's interesting, and makes me wonder if this decision means completely turning his back on his human side or not. I think a case could be made either way.

Can you explain your take on it, based on the subbed version, and I'll see how it compares with mine?

    So, belatedly, here's my review...

I'll preface it by saying that I didn't realize when I bought the ticket that the show was letting out at Midnight. This was worrisome as I had to think about the last train, as I had to make two connections to get back to the hotel. I also became aware, to quote George Costanza, of an "impending intestinal requirement" that began to assert itself with some urgency (sorry to be crude). So towards the end, I was a bit on-edge.

On balance I rank the film probably a notch below Summer Wars, but at least on par with TGWLTT. I have a few issues with it, mainly involving the narrative flow. I think you're absolutely right in that I didn't need to understand all the dialogue - it's more visual poetry than prose, and I could definitely get the gist of it. The flip side of that is that the character stuff seemed to move pretty fast at times, without a lot of build-up. Sometimes I would have liked more dialogue to help understand what drove the characters to do what they did.

Visually, as narratively, I think it's a real departure for Hosoda. A much simpler look and a much simpler film structurally, yet emotionally profound in many ways. I found the ending with Ame's arc quite powerful, though it's one of those instances where I would have liked a bit more understanding of the journey he was making building up to it. Maybe with the subs.

I know, I was thinking that too. Not much Miyu Irino lately either.
