Hmm. This one passed under my radar totally, but a sheer chance glance after someone mentioned it in the Suggestions Thread got me interested. Apparently it's quite revered, and received a ton of awards. Only two undistinguished OVAs though.

You know, I'm honestly a bit surprised that only 15% of K-On's fans are people who don't watch anime much - the guy who draws Mistakes of Youth noted in his blog that there were an awful lot of young girls at the screening he attended of the movie. But then again, that number may be a bit deceptive, because I suspect there's a lot of people out there, even among the "buyer" crowd, who watch anime frequently but don't watch many shows at any given time. I think the real secret to Kyoto's success has been making moe shows that this group actually paid attention to. Similarly, I wouldn't expect Madoka to be that well known outside of people who frequently watch anime, but would expect it to be heavily watched among people who only watch a few shows at a time.

(I do find it interesting how when the tastes of Japanese fans is discussed, a lot of attention is played to ecchi comedies, when something like Madoka can come along and handily outsell every ecchi comedy released that season combined. As far as I can tell Infinite Stratos and maybe Strike Witches have achieved truly notable successes.

The K-On and Kuroshitsuji gender balances are what I expected. I honestly expected 12-15% female for Strike Witches rather than ten, but maybe my tendency to hang out with cosplayers at cons skews my impressions. Expected a bit higher for Madoka too, maybe one in three rather than one in four. I wonder what the distribution for the Bakemonogatari fanbase is... I would suspect less women than Madoka due to the lack of a magical girl connection, but I suspect the two bases share many members and I seem to remember Araragi actually has a bit of a female following.

(The Mistakes of Youth blog also has a report on a "end of Nisemonogatari" party he attended, which had like five women in a group of 55, but I can't see that being representative, maybe women aren't keen on that kind of event there. Actually the whole thing sounds kind of odd to me, he apparently ended up at a table with a cyberpunk fan presiding over assorted anti-moe types who nonetheless liked Nise and, apparently - Strike Witches. And whom were largely Hachikuji fans, which alone is weird since while she really shone in Nise, I happen to know that Nadeko and Senjougahara were more popular in character polls conducted during season one.)

BTW, I think I've mentioned it before but I meet two Japanese women studying English here at an anime club event a few months back and both liked Nise. The one who was more open about her taste also like a lot of Jump stuff, Natsume Yuujinchou, Inu X Boke SS, Ano Natsu de Matteru, and - for reasons that never became clear to me - High School DxD. And I remember one mentioning having cosplayed as Ciel from Kuroshitsuji in a dress. Too bad the club hasn't organized any major events since, those were some interesting conversations.)

Well it was on my radar too - definitely in the spring preview - as I knew a little about the manga. But there sure wasn't anything in Hood's résumé to give me reason to think they'd do something this good!

Hello, I'm the writer of the post you got a nice laugh out of and I'd just like to point out that, as an art form, anime is naturally subjective, therefore, no interpretation is truly wrong, ya' know? I've been very positive towards MGX in the large majority of my posts on it, genuinely believing it's a very good show, I'd encourage you to check them out at some point! I have no problems with its ecchi undertone, the only thing that has riled me is the slight sexist undertone that was undeniably present in the latest episode. : )

Wow...I don't know what to say about that person. I find it weird the standard or expectations people try to impose on this simply because it's being different. I hope they feel the same way about hardcore ecchi shows or they're hypocrites. *facepalm* Amazing how many people are up in arms over MGX. Almost as if there was a commandment about what anime girls have to be to be acceptable in modern anime. It's getting rather absurd considering what stupidity and gimmicks are seen as fine/justified but Urabe's aren't. That's people for you. Amusing link. Cheers. ^^

That's probably the best approach. This title is honest and doing things a bit differently to the point a lot of people just can't handle it. Their loss. I just hope the creator of the manga does benefit from this all.
