Faith in the production might be a better way to put it than faith in the staff. I have a decent degree of confidence in Oonuma's skills because I usually like his directorial choices... but what BakaTest and C3 proved is that he only really shines when working with a good source (ie. EF).

The effect is more psychological than anything else - when I watch a show where I'm not sure if it'll be good or not, the mood is more tense, the weak points stand out more, and I end up enjoying it less. Conversely, if I think the show will end up being good overall I tend to be relaxed and easily shrug off flaws.

I've also noticed that I tend to give shows I'm uncertain about a priority on my "to watch" list second only to stuff I'm really pumped for during the second and third weeks of a given season... helps to hammer out the list of what I'm watching, I guess.

I've sometimes made lists of traits shared by shows I like in a particular genre but never for anime as a whole. And even then I tend to find there's a lot of variation - most shows I like hit some but not all of the traits I like.

Good for you, as it can be hard to find stuff that suits your taste sometimes. As for me, it's been pretty well for the last 15 months or so, so I'm glad you're finally out of your despair.

I have only watched Tasogare Otome × Amnesia for this season; I haven't watched Fate/Zero and Koreha Zombie Desuka of the Dead because I'm not finished with the first season. Natsuiro Kiseki appears to be interesting for having a conflict in a seemingly light-hearted slice of life show during the first episode, and as someone who enjoyed the crazy antics in Seto no Hanayome, I'm pretty sure I'll be having a good time if I start watching Haiyore! Nyaruko-san.

That makes sense then. Source material popularity is very important in anime sales, yeah.

And Otakus go crazy for J-Pop idols, so I'm not surprised at AKB0048 being expected to do really well.

MF is one of the weaker ranged ads out there right now though. Late game the ranged ad should always be the hardest hitting on the team, thats just how it works out, but even amount them, mf is considered weak. The main problem with her is that her abilites lose their usefulness late game, where with champions like kog and vayne, all their abilities still have a useful purpose in the late game.

I think that the first episode worked rather well in introducing the cast and how they all managed to get together and connect via Jazz, while episode 2 built more on giving the relationship some additional substance.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san should do well, I suppose, since it has a sizable fanbase from the flash days (though I never imagined it would do this well) and Fate/Zero is a given, but AKB0048 and Hyou-Ka are more of wild cards. With the former, it depends on how well received the anime will be among the AKB crowd, and how willing are they to buy it (I mean, there is no denying that AKB is HUGE, but is there really that much of a cross between the two demographics to make it enough of a big seller?) and even then, it might draw in AKB fans more than the typical otaku crowd, so maybe it wont cause that much of a dent.

With the latter, well, I have to admit that I'm not so sure if KyoAni's supposed ''golden touch'' is really going to work, if it had worked at all. So far, they had been adapting relatively popular works from Key and FMP, and sure K-On! had been a smash hit, but when you think about it, does KyoAni really have that much of an effect on the Japanese purchaser mind?I don't think it'll fail completely, but I do think we are about to see the limits of KyoAni's influence.

Even if I share some of your concerns, I think you are being a bit too pessimistic I honestly think that noitaminA will be airing more shows like Apollon again in the future, provided they remain till then. I doubt that A-1 will be worried about taking risks when they have been among the most financially successful studios in recent times (and also being Sony's anime making machine helps a lot) so I doubt they will be reverting to a single genre any time, even if Space Bros fails to take off.

I do worry more about the older type shows like Lupin and MGX, since they are quite old fashioned and I hope to see more of them, even though it's unlikely it's going to do that well.

I do agree about this season being a litmus test to see where the current trends are for the Japanese market. I can only hope that it comes out being a better result than usual.

Hey there, sorry about the late reply, it's been a busy week here.

I finally got around to checking out the rest of the shows I had my on this morning, and I think I can say that this season so far had been pretty fantastic. This spring not only has the level of variety increased, but the quality all around is pretty high as well. Which is rather bad for me ironically since I only have so much little time to actually watch all the shows I have an eye on

What I'll be following ... I'm not sure yet. Like I said, it's hard to figure out what I'll be able to keep up with week to week since I have to factor in how much time I'm going to have to actually watch, but so far I'm aiming to follow:

Space Bros: I really like this and from the just the first 3 episode, it had me hooked with it's Plantese like themes and the atmosphere had been great. However, there is a lot of romanticizing space travel and astronauts in this show, which for a show about a man who is trying to fulfill his childhood dream and promise is pretty appropriate I suppose, but I can't help but feel a bit worried about where they are going with the show since I fear they might go for the extreme end of the idealistic scale. Still, what I've seen had been great and if it does turn out to be 50+ episodes I'll probably follow it through.

Saint Seyia Ω: Really, I just love the designs in this show and thus far the music has been a treat to listen to. Mainly in it for the nostalgia though hoping for a more fresh take on the franchise.

Sankarea: It's interesting so far, with a lot of good looking designs and an engaging story, but I'm sort of unsure whether or not I should follow it or just wait and marathon it just yet.

Natsuiro Kiseki: I'm mostly watching this show because it's directed by Mizushima Seiji

Lupin: Fujiko's nipples: I like the stylish art of the show, but not entirely sold on the story. Mainly, I feel like it takes itself too seriously at times, and when it comes to Lupin I like it when everything is much sillier than serious. High probability of watching tho.

Mysterious Girlfriend X: I liked the first episode, and I think that the chemistry between the two leads is pretty high.

Eureka Seven Astral Ocean:Loved the first series, so this is a no brainier.

Tsuritama + Apollon: noitaminA is back baby!

Fate/Zero: Already watching since the first season.

Other shows that I'd love to check out if I have the time: Kimi to Boku 2, Jormungand , Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, Accel World and Zetaman.

Shows that I have the unhealthy sort of morbid curiosity (the sort that kills the cat): Sengoku Collection (I like Brain Base, but episode 3 was just painful to look at. That chin was just ...) Haiyore! Nyaruko-san (I have actually fully watched the flash anime before the actual one aired ages ago. I creep myself sometimes) Shining Hearts (I actually now the plot of the games, so the first episode ended up being a very interesting watch, by that I mean very hilarious)

I'll probably give it a think on Sunday to see what I follow. Doesn't help I have all these long running shows from past season as well.

Yeah, I don't get the sales success of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san either. I checked out its first episode, and it seems pretty generic to me. I'm also not personally aware of its source material being insanely popular or anything like that Odd. What's your theory to its (likely) sales success?

I read a lot of people’s MALs but haven’t bothered setting one up, mainly because I simple can’t handle giving out numerical ratings. I have some sort of obsession with understanding the logic behind my opinions that makes me balk at how arbitrary the process feels. Same reason I spend so much time editing posts before being satisfied enough to post them.

I don’t think Amnesia has any more rabid fanboys than many other shows, but it’s the one where they smell blood (ie. was actually watched and panned by some of our more critical members). You were talking to DemiSoda, I take it?

Personally, I don’t share DemiSoda’s view that the show has been too light and comedic thus far. I like an awful lot of shows that spend time being light and comedic. I am, however, concerned about whether the show will ultimately produce anything memorable. Oonuma absolutely did this in EF (which is why DemiSoda and I are fans of his), but BakaTest and C3 just did not deliver in this regard. So I’m apprehensive despite hearing good things about the source material. Contrast say, Hanasaku Iroha, where I had absolute confidence in the staff’s delivering when it counted throughout and hence was able to enjoy most of the very divisive comedic episodes without worries. Episode 7 comes to mind… certain posters were screeching about how they show had to get serious again soon (which it did) and I was all like “man, Tomoe just established herself as one of the few truly great late-20s characters in moe anime”.

So in regards to Amnesia I’m kind of in the position of digging the perspective gags, the “mischievous ghost and the only boy who can touch her” thing (I know Key does ghost girls too but I find Key girls hit and miss) and sky porn but worrying about the show’s ability to deliver later on.

I saw a bit of Aria back in 2007 or so when I wasn’t much into slower paced shows. Given that I wouldn’t put much stock in my impressions.
