Holy shit, it makes sense now

Ok...I'm banking it all on voice acting carrying this. Not sure it will do the manga justice, but the voice cast should at least add something to it...maybe.

Animation looks good! Voices sound good! Though something about Hibino's face is still throwing me off :eyespin:.

FlareKnight 2023-08-09 21:10

So far so good. Voice and animation seem to be on point. I agree still about the character designs, but I think overall this is promising. Hopefully it turns out to be a really good adaptation.

Say what you will about the character designs, the animation looks phenomenal :D!

And it's not every anime you can say has a theme by One Republic :heh:!

Stark700 2024-04-13 09:43

First episode just aired on Twitter/Crunchyroll.

This seems to be the only anime airing this season same time internationally with JP airings.

Is there any nation as besieged by Kaiju as Japan? Luckily they have the Kaiju Defense Force who can actually manage and defeat Kaiju! And you can't beat Asami Seto voicing a dark-haired beauty with a giant gun .

Though nobody ever gives credit to the people who has to clean up after the Defense Force, like our protagonist Kafka Hibino who puts in the work to clean up the remains of monsters, which is a dirty and thankless job...but somebody's got to do it ;)!

What does link a Kaiju clean up guy and the beautiful and famous captain of the 3rd Division? A shared childhood dream of slaying Kaiju...a dream that Kafka wasn't able to fulfill, leaving him to languish in obscurity and bitterness he couldn't achieve his dream :(.

Which makes it even worse when a newbie to the clean up crew, Ichikawa, has the same dream and is committed to it, and calls out Kafka for giving up...though he learns firsthand it's not easy cleaning up Kaiju intestines, but it was nice of Kafka to show him the ropes! He may have had some fun at Ichikawa's expense for being a brash kid, but he's still a good guy and mentor :).

Doubly so when he shows that he's got the heart of a hero and prioritizes saving Ichikawa when a Kaiju Yojuu shows up, and even if he's powerless against it, he runs as fast as he can to save Ichikawa and keep the Kaiju occupied. And Ichikawa was even nice enough to return the favor :D!

Of course Mina brings her white tiger along to fight Kaiju. As if she couldn't get more based. Though the way she barely acknowledged Kafka...that's gotta sting :(.

But if a guy like Ichikawa thinks he's cool and can still make it, maybe there's a chance for Kafka after all! At least until some Kaiju bug targets him, shoves itself into his mouth, and transforms HIM into a Kaiju...and he and Ichikawa have to bail. Man, this was not Kafka's day :twitch:.

On the one hand, Mina still fondly remembers Kafka and the promise they made, she's just upset that he's not by her side like he promised...on the other hand, she's also now about to hunt him down! And she takes the call in nothing but panties and with her tiger by her side :naughty:.

Not knowing much about the series, my first thought was "this isn't going to be a slice of life about a guy who cleans the intestines of kaijus, right? Shouldn't the guy become a monster at some point?". Luckily, things became clearer later.
So now we have our Kafka turned into a kaiju and hunted. I'm curious to see if he'll have to keep his identity a secret to stay safe (I'm assuming he can turn back to human) or he'll be deemed too useful to dispose of and allowed to use his powers against kaijus.

This show being shilled so hard by CR almost made me want not to watch it, but it would have been a very dumb reason.

Production values seem good, with very little use of CGI. I can't say much about the story, this feels like the type of show that would have strongly benefited from a one hour premiere. I'm guessing they didn't even fully cover the first chapter.

Given how easily the MC turned into a Kaiju, I'm guessing there are others like him out there but the public is kept in the dark about that.

grecefar 2024-04-13 20:01

I did like the first chapter. It was interesting to see how the clean up works in cases like these with kaijuus.

It got some thing that I'm interested to know about and that transformation at the end looked cool.

FlareKnight 2024-04-13 20:38

Both now and when reading originally I still think it would have been a solid show to follow a team going around cleaning up after Kaiju disasters. Obviously wouldn't be much of an action series, but I think there's some good stuff that could be explored in that.

But obviously that's not going to happen! And honestly I'm fine with this episode and direction. Kafka really has been through a ride. And it even makes me feel for Mina who did actually reach the goal they set for themselves. Was counting on him to make it with her...but it didn't happen.

Can't go through an episode without him actually turning into something. So glad they fit that in at the end. Now he...needs to not get killed.

They're doing the releases like Delicious in Dungeon.

Agreed! I had the same thought when I first started reading the manga, and have been mentally creating my own story. :p

Frontier 2024-04-13 23:13

Honestly it would probably be even easier to keep his identity a secret if he stuck with cleanup because nobody pays attention to them.
