I'm not fond of al the jumping around, but I was thought first episode was pretty great. I'm a LN reader so I will refrain from saying to much but the first episode is definitely only scratching the surface what is going.

this looks like an interesting series, war and mecha, im in. not sure how it will end up but i will give the series a good shot. not a fan of code geese type but the "realities" of war show in ep1 are encouraging.

Only watched it low resolution, but the CG combat scenes look really impressive considering how fluid the movement is. Seems A-1's decision to fully outsource that part is paying dividends.
Sawano's BGM is of course great as always. Pacing right now is 1 episode for 1 chapter while being quite faithful to the original work. Anime-only scenes in episode 2 have been introduced to act as an info dump, i.e. parts that are explained in text form in the LN. As a LN reader I'm pretty happy with the adaptation to this point. EDIT: The ED Dynamic tag cannot be rendered. (PrintableThread) |
The first cour is going to be 11 episodes (not sure if second cour will also have same length)

Shin is very stoic and practical, although he's not averse to snarking when necessary, and is an efficient and capable commander for the Spearhead Squadron and a devastating warrior against the Legion. Also surprisingly soft-spoken, and carries the names of his fallen comrades into battle :).
The Eighty-Six were on the ball and ready to fight the Legion before Lena even called them. Is there anything for her to even do for them other than react like she's in a JoJo story? Although even Shin admits that her suggestion was sensible and by-the-book, she knows what she's doing, Spearhead just has their own, effective, way of fighting the Legion ;). And what a fight it was as we see the Eighty-Six take the fight to the man units of the Legion and send them packing. The CG Juggernauts and Legion looked pretty cool and moved very well, and that Sawano OST was effective . So the "official" story is that the Empire of Giad sent autonomous robot drones (because that always ends well) attack the Republic of San Magnolia, but because the Legion have a certain life expectancy, the Republic is sure the war will be over in two years. And it's not like they have to worry about fighting themselves or about military matters when they've got the Juggernaut "drones" to fight for them . Of course Lena is there to spit facts and tell the class the truth, that the Republic ended up retreating and sending in citizens who didn't look like them and weren't Alba to the front lines to forcibly fight off the Legion from internment camps, justifying it by saying that they're merely underdeveloped pigs put in to operate drones and not real flesh-and-blood humans like they are. It's kind of horrifying that Lena tells them all this and the students still can't comprehend how terrible it is. Is it too much to hope for that she was able to get through to at least a few of them :(? I guess it's a good thing Lena's uncle is so high up in the military that she can talk about how terrible the Republic's treatment of the Eighty-Six and how little they are living up to their self-professed ideals without facing punishment or proper reprimand, although I'm worried Lena might push it too far :upset:. Lena seems to be enjoying her nightly conversations with Undertaker and the rapport she thinks she's building with Spearhead Squadron, although while she's apparently their longest-lasting Handler they still think she's due to break eventually :uhoh: I think he wanted more than to just hand out Anju's cakes... Shin's enjoying a good book. Don't bother him about shooting cans unless you want him to shoot from there :p. The Ending fits very well for the kind of sci-fi Mecha show the series is. Very melodic and poignant :D. |

Lena may look like she isn’t needed but having someone with a view that can cover the entire battlefield and give appropriate commands in various situations is quite useful and crucial, you know? |

Battle was cool, spidertanks are pleasant change from standard mechas and they packing some nice moves.
Exposition in other hand couldn't be more heavy-handed if it was made out of uranium. |
I don't know if I am biased because I love the LNs but the first two episodes were amazing for me.

I'm liking the combat in this show. The CG is done by the same studio that did Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince. Those fights were amazing. They're also doing Godzilla SP this season and I was pleasantly surprised by the monster animation. Studio Orange doing good work for CG anime.

The setting is rather interesting. Other than hair and eye color, I wonder what makes the "normals" different from the 86. The paper mentioned they failed to evolve? Of course, hair and eye color is more than enough reason for humans to discriminate against others, our own history has proven that.
I wonder why the government even bothers hiding the fact 86 are piloting their mechs. It doesn't seem like anyone besides the main character gives a damn. I thought perhaps it was an "old people" mindset, but this episode has shown us young people feel the same. The heroine is the only exception so far. |
