Anyone following this series?

Hayate is an ordinary highschool student who's parents are compulsive gamblers and sell his organs to the local yakuza. While escaping them, Hayate instead gains a job as a butler for a girl who has some 'interesting' tastes.

It's licensed now but it's a great show. It really reminds me of Zero No Tsukaima set in a mansion. I hate that the 5th volume (Because fansubs stopped at 4 when it was licensed) will probably not be out until November 2007 but it's a great light comedy romp.

I wonder how it ended (If it did)

rooboy 2006-12-04 19:20

I love Hayate, I'm sad that the group that was scanlating it stopped, but on the other hand, I'm very happy that it was picked up by Viz for distribution in my country. AFAIK, it's actually still ongoing, volume 7 was released earlier this year.

I'm really hoping that by this time next year they'll be announcing an anime. :)

retracnosna 2006-12-04 19:52

is George Kastanza the author?

him and his partner Jerry Seinfeld tried turning a similar idea into a sitcom once

Forbin 2006-12-04 20:23

Gets more complicated. Except for the big breasted redhead it looks like the storyline of ZnT.

After seeing it mentioned by many japanese otaku forums/blogs, there's a high probability that it will get an anime ^^

retracnosna 2006-12-06 03:42

Doesn't remind me of ZeroNoTsukaima too much yet. Pretty good manga so far though

except for chapter8. That just seemed like a bad decision. Pick a targert audience already lol. If it's yaoi fans, have the crossdressing from the start. If it's hetero guys, which it seemed to be, might want to just skip it.

Forbin 2006-12-06 12:51

Loli girl who likes to beat up on her 'Slave/Butler' and has a best friend who looks like Siesta and a Maid who Hayate is more interested in?

Except for Tama all the characters look like ZnT. Was chapter 8 where they dress him up in the Nekomimi?

Village Idiot 2006-12-06 12:56

I just read Vol 1-8, and I must say, this manga is really, really good. It just keeps getting better and better as it moves along. Like Pani Poni Dash!, the manga is filled with references to other manga/anime, and often breaks the fourth wall.

I highly recommend it to anyone whom can get it.

Sadly though, Viz appears to be releasing the volumes every 4 months :(

And the chapters are being released by Weekly Shounen Sunday; doesn't that mean it is a weekly release like Negima?

Nah, Nagi doesn't beat up on Hayate, she's in love with him and treats him well, unless he pisses her off somehow (though he only treats her like a kid).

And yes, Ch8 was when Nagi and Maria got carried away and dressed him up in Nekomimi.

The release date appears to be 3 months, which unfortunately is becoming more common with the release schedule for American companies (instead of a release every 2 months). But yes, 3 months between volume does seem slow. How often are the Japanese volumes released?

Vol 1 21th Nov 2005
Vol 2 12th Feb 2007
Vol 3 8th May 2007

I shall have to give this manga a try.

You're correct - it's a weekly manga. I meant to correct that after I looked it up, but work interfered. It's corrected now.
For some weird reason I was thinking it was the same magazine as FMA - not the same magazine as Midori no Hibi.

EDIT: I also don't really get the ZnT references - I guess at some level it seems like it, but it has a much different feel to me. In a lot of ways it reminds me of a less-ecchi, reversed He Is My Master.

I shall have to give this manga a try.

Vol 9 will be released this month in Japan.

Hmm...the manga started in 2004, so I'm guessing the usual 3 months or something per volume?

I'm reading through the scanslations/raws again to tide me over till Viz releases Vol 2. Its just that good :D

retracnosna 2006-12-06 13:38

^lol I was going to say it reminded me of He is My Master a little bit too, but decided no to bother

I like Hayate better personally. Sucks there are only 4 volumes translated

Village Idiot 2006-12-06 13:53

Hayate is awesome.

I also like Hayate better than HiMM - for one thing I find the jokes much funnier (but then I really like PPD! and other referential works). It's just that the setup reminds me more of that than ZnT.

Forbin 2006-12-06 17:17

Probably does but I stopped HMM after episode 4...all those contests got to me.

Owells when I saw ZnT I was thinking of Hayate...owells...Just me I guess.

Come on Vol 5!

Thelastguardian 2006-12-06 21:05

Let's put it this way, I have the manga and frankly, this is one of the few manga series I have that after reading it ~8 times over, I still want to re-read it :) .

HMM, on the other hand....(look at the plastic storage box on my floor...

In other word, if I had to burn my manga one by one to save the world, this series would be among the last ones I would burn :) .

The jokes are somewhat similar to PPD, with many ACG parodies/references and ironic moments- lots of "Kyon style" scolding (I don't know what's the english name for that term is). Thankfully, the jokes are much more straightforward than PPD is.

One of the main attraction about this manga is that there is a plot that makes sense (for a comedy)
(even though 8 volumes later, only 3 months have past in the story...).

Most people stop reading after the 1st volume because they were repulsed at how horrible the main character's parents are- they are beyond cruel, in a very hilarious sort of way ;D

If you can last through the first 2 volumes, however, you are in the clear. I originally stopped following the story after two volumes, but its popularity compelled me to resume.

Kurogane_Shiroikaze 2006-12-16 14:11

Hayate anime has been announced.

I came to heaven and returned back. I will probably go to heaven again if my dream cast list is fulfilled.

SinsI 2006-12-17 23:18

I really wonder how the hell can THIS be translated for general public. I find myself reading through the cultural references like 1/3 of the time(and I am already fairly educated in them, so it's going to be many times worse for ordinary people), and still A LOT of the jokes completely loose their punch.
Stupid, stupid choice for Viz.

Hayate is definitely not just like ZnT or HiMM.
Our honorable butler is multi-talented, multi-purpose, unbreakable gun*beep*.
Not a useless dog or pervert lolicon.

And don't forget, completely invincible.

General_Norris 2006-12-21 14:22

This seems interesting. However since it is licensed in the US it has dissapeared from the net and I would have liked to read a part of it. Now I will have to wait until the anime comes out to see if it is worth importing from the US.

techiet 2006-12-21 18:43

There are places (sadly) that still have the scanlations uploaded and up for grabs.

I myself have bought the first volume after reading the scanlations. I think Viz did a pretty good job with it, but I do agree with the culture refrences are going to lose their humor when read by normal people. But honestly? It's still funny. I can loan it out to people in my anime club (who never bother looking outside the "mainstream" anime/manga) and they've enjoyed it a lot.

Anime version of Hayate better be done well. Hayate jumping on top of the car would be soo much better animated!

It hasnt completely disappeared. In fact, two groups are scanlating it. The manga is scanlated until volume 4 chapter 22 as of this post.

Actually, i don't think cultural difference is a big problem. The biggest problem is that you must have some knowledge background about ACG in order to know all its humor. It takes a lot (really a lot) of reference from other animes and mangas though you still able to get some of the humor without these background.

Also, i have never seen a harem(?) male lead which is so talent, robust, and moe(?).

lol, Hayate in trap mode has ranked 2nd in the polls, I gonna admire Hayate's talent in all manner of house work and such tastyness.

Still what troubles me are the translation by viz will lose most of the more subtle anime parodies/refrences that requires alot of rereading to be found that appears more and more later in the manga. At my 3rd rereading i'm still finding new things the are refrencing from. and what more amazing is the anime they parodied from are not all from well known nor even very old series (i.e. insane amount of Gun*** refs), like from the lastest chapters comment like "As easly as Gandafr controling Zero-sen". sure i found it easy to pick it up and found very funny when Hayate relate to housework and study combine, but i really wonder how much of that will be lost in translation, especially those speech habits like de arimasu etc.

If the anime and the English manga catches 2/3 of the orginal refs, it turn out great i belive.

Theres a lot of censoring in viz's english manga. I can't really make out what they're talking about because of those stupid black dots. :eyespin:
I'm looking forward on how Viz translates that joke in volume 2. :)

Is it wrong to say "sony" in a manga?

Darco_emp 2007-01-03 09:07

The censoring was done in the Japanese Manga too I belive (I know its in the Chinese fansubs too).

Since i remember in chapter 23 Hayate and Nagi had this conversation

Quote:

H: "By the way is it ok for Mushi-King to be written with out the blank out charater?"
N:"Yup, we have been given permisson, so we can use it to our hearts content"
So i guess naming copyrights need to following so we only get S*NY, still it make me wonder on Gun***

General_Norris 2007-01-04 12:06

I got the four first tomes from somewhere in the net and man, I laughed hard. I instantly thought "I must buy it" and I included it along a good part of Discworld from Amazon. I should get my shipping in 6-36 laborable days :heh:, or 0-26 days because I ordered it ten days ago.
I have to ask, there was a line that almost threw me off my chair. Was this in the original version?

Darco_emp 2007-01-04 21:41

That line is quite accurate i think, Viz translated it as

"Your organs are belong to us"

Over all the Viz translation is surprisingly good for some reason, alot of original translation are kept, and not that much has been change from a glance. since all the omake and chara profiles has been kept with, the Bad end stuff and 4 panel mangas so overall its rather good

but everything else looks fine :D

Darco_emp 2007-01-05 01:42

Yep its You :eyebrow:

but i really gotta say first 2 volumes are rather average, from mid vol. 3 onward i found Hayate much better

Blaat 2007-01-07 13:59

Nightengale 2007-01-08 01:54

I've just read Vol.7 of this. Though plot development seems to still be semi-non existent, it's a whole lot of fun, even if somewhat less comical in the later volumes imo.

Though vol.7(( or at least first half of it )) is full of tsundere-goodness. :3

One question though...

Spoiler for vol.6~7?:

Blaat 2007-01-08 05:47

I haven't read it but perhaps its both, the mangaka does seem to be a Gundam fan.

Darco_emp 2007-01-09 04:05

Vol. 6 Kamen Cosplay is from petty cure i think, as a parody of Cure black and white i think.

I found later vol. gives better development overall, but the number of side chara is getting too much i think. since its quit are from screen time reduction of Tama and Klaus. will its fun all the way
