Name: Boku no Hero Academia
Associated Names: 僕のヒーローアカデミア; My hero Academia
Mangaka: Horikoshi Kouhei

Brand new Weekly Jump serialization!

Quote:

Taken from Mangaupdates:

The story is set in the modern day, except people with special powers have become commonplace throughout the world. A boy named Izuku Midoriya has no powers, but he still dreams.

marvelB 2014-07-10 21:25

Oh snap, a new series from Horikoshi!? Sweet! :D Hopefully, this one lasts longer than either Oumagadoki or Bulge (I'm still sad about the latter's cancellation....).

Anyways, I'm guessing this is a superhero series similar to Onepunch-Man? Hope a translation for this comes out soon....

bastek66 2014-07-11 05:48

I wonder if it manages to be longer than Sensei no Bulge.

ReinZwei 2014-07-18 11:27

With the current lineup for jump, I think it will get a hard time going on the upper level/tier of the magazine. Though who knows, hoping that it will turn the tides up specially that I find this more interesting than the other 2 new titles which are condor and yoakemono.

omega253 2014-08-14 10:28

Chapter 1 just got translated into English.

So far, it looks good and the characters are interesting. I can't help but feel bad for Izuki, but hey, he's going to get somewhat strong if poisui's spoilers are right. :heh:

vale vale vell 2014-08-14 12:10

a main character that trains to become strong is cliche but a cliche idea done in an entirely new method and scenario is what is keeping the anime manga world alive so this old idea given a new form really is refreshing but still i sincerely hope they don't axe this

Esclair 2014-08-14 16:04

Spoiler for chapter 3:

teejmo 2014-08-14 16:17

^There's no way the kid could have had the money to go that route. But it might have been interesting if he had gone the Boy Wonder route.

amasposu 2014-08-14 16:32

Izuku doesn't have an "individuality," so he doesn't really have a power, per say. What he uses is like brute strength more than anything else (Think of All Might's attacks). Izuku's sheer strength is really strong, but his body is really weak. When he uses his sheer strength, his body takes a great deal of damage. Also, his strength can only activates during certain conditions; ie: someone needs to be saved.

Breimoon 2014-08-14 17:10

Wanted him to be the new shiage (to aru majutsu no index -> character from this novel)

marvelB 2014-08-14 22:00

Hey, there's finally a translation for this series! Of course, said translations could be better, but..... eh, whatcha gonna do.

Anyway, I'm a little surprised nobody made the OPM comparisons yet, lol (I mean, the heroes even have rankings, right?). :p Anyway, it is interesting to see the MC already gain strength so soon after the first chapter. I'm also curious as to whether or not that kid with the explosion powers will still remain something of a rival to Izuku (maybe even becoming a supervillain), or they'll eventually team up together to fight crime....?

BTW, something interesting I noticed is that the giant villain shown in the first chapter's color spread (as seen in the first post) looks nearly identical to the villain from the first chapter of Bulge:

^Like seriously, just slap some dreadlocks on him, and they'd practically be the same character, lol. :heh: That being said, I do look forward to more of Horikoshi's character designs. I already like the tree ninja and firefighter hero's designs, in particular. :)

Since he's going to a Hero school, I'm sure there'll be some professor/teacher that's obsessed with building 'equipment' for Heroes, and he can end up being his lab assistant to help 'test' them out.

Well, I guess the OPM method could be fine too.

SamVision 2014-10-10 22:12

Looks like this will turn into something like One Punch Man but with a younger audience in mind.

Esclair 2014-10-13 15:15

Chapter 2 got scanlated.

The way he gets is his powers is kind of cool. I'm glad it's not a sudden powerup or some kind of hidden power sleeping dormant kind of thing.

Idealist 99 2014-10-13 16:36

I would like the Main Antagonist to be a Normal human who was bulied like the MC therefore he hold a grudge on every single Human with Power and hatch a Plan to destroyed them all.
It would be fun to see the Most powerful villain to be a Normal Human with great intellect.
Like A Batman that gone evil !

marvelB 2014-10-13 19:29

So I just found out that this series is actually doing quite well for itself! That's great to know since that now means it has a much better chance of lasting longer than Oumagadoki and Bulge! Congrats, Horikoshi! :)

And on that note, I quite enjoyed the second chapter. :) Sure, it's still easy to compare with OPM (what with the MC actually training to get his power and all), but at least there's still Horikoshi's unique twist on things (like having to eat a hair instead of going bald, lol :heh:). Definitely looking forward to the next translated chapters.

Irenicus 2014-10-13 19:33

The author seems to like American heroes.

...can I have a Batman?

I kind of imagine the author going through hellish training montages himself in-between series or something, with Rocky music.

It's certainly quite fun so far. Hopefully it doesn't lose steam to the cutthroat schedule/competitive pressure.

omega253 2014-10-13 20:10

The second chapter was finally translated... Haa....

Plus, this manga has been doing well on the rankings. It's managed to stay in the top 10 for quite a while now. :)

Godspeed to the group doing this. You're gonna need it to catch up to the raws. :heh:

Idealist 99 2014-10-18 08:01

Chapter 03 translation is Out--

--Female lead make her appearance

--It revealed that The MC never talk to a girl before.

--The MC score 0 But saved the Female Lead by Punching some huge Robot or something .

arthand 2014-10-18 08:35

It's being translated now, isn't it?

That said, the raws are ahead by 10+ chapters. :heh:

Needless to say, the translators have their work cut out for them.

teejmo 2014-10-19 02:00

Cue love interest: "I talked to a girl!" No offense, kid, but "Huh? Ahh.. Uhh.." doesn't actually count as talking to a girl.:D

Also, it seems like the higher-ups are impressed by the 0-point loser.

marvelB 2014-10-19 03:30

LOL at the Mario references. :heh:

Also, wasn't that All Might in his "true" form there at the end of the chapter? Considering that he wanted to keep the truth behind his powers a secret from the public, it strikes me as a little odd to see him chilling out in a room full of other heroes (and while I wouldn't doubt they're a trustworthy bunch, letting more people in on the secret just raises the risk of it getting leaked, y'know?).

Of course! It's always the loser who exhibits the most effort who gains favor with mentor characters, after all! Such is the nature of a shounen manga, you know? ;)

Esclair 2014-10-19 16:40

In shounen manga effort + heart is always > talent/skill

Daft 2014-10-19 21:39

Just found out about this series thanks to this thread and have been seeing good reviews; I'm loving it already. I really hope this one turns out - really miss Oumagadoki Zoo :upset:. I'm assuming the higher-ups at SJ really like Horikoshi's style at least to give him a third chance in the same magazine after the demographic voted him out twice. As others have said, you really get the One Punch Man vibe from this so far. I'm interested in how it's explained that All Might's (Guile/Captain America fusion lol) can be passed down. At first I was thinking he was just talking about training and skills passed down like a martial arts until the Izuku ate the hair and it turned out its a legit super power that absorbs energy?

SamVision 2014-10-20 02:31

That girl gets a 9.5/10 on the kawaii-o-meter. Damn Horikoshi you sure know how to design characters.

marvelB 2014-10-22 15:16

Chapter 4's been translated! :)

And as expected, Izuku managed to pass despite failing the practical portion. I see I was also right about All Might being at the school (even if he was in "hero" mode during the video). It's also nice that we finally got the name of that girl (Ochako, huh?). Well, looking forward to the future translated chapters! ;)

hamazura 2014-10-22 15:36

these 4 chapters are very promising
lets see if its getting boring after going to school

marvelB 2014-10-30 12:14

Huh, I didn't notice it earlier, but chapter 5 has been translated! And as a bonus, an improved translation for the first chapter is out, as well! ;)

Well, it figures that the MC would get one of those strict, hardass teachers. I'm pretty interested in seeing what the rest of the teachers are like, though....

Quol 2014-10-30 17:26

Great manga i like the teacher since he reminds me of Kakashi from naruto.

Heat066 2014-10-30 17:30

Read this yesterday and it looks very promising(well, it's in Shonen Jump) loving the characters so far.

Btw Izuku looks like a mix of Saitama + Yugi Muto :heh:

marvelB 2014-11-05 01:28

Translated chapter 6 is out!

Heh, at least Izuku found a way to "control" his quirk without completely crippling himself! :heh:

Edit: BTW, it seems that the first volume sold pretty well upon its release, as well. Glad to hear of more success stories for this series! :)

Sold pretty well? It got sold out.

This gives me (and no doubt the other fans of this series) hope that the serialization won't be axed like the author's other works.

marvelB 2014-11-13 22:49

Was late in catching it, but chapter 7 translation is out! And I must say, the class sure looks spiffy in their hero garb (though I find it amusing that Deku Izuku's costume hasn't been fully revealed yet..... probably because he looks silly compared to the rest, lol :p). Also, I liked that Pez dispenser of the tree ninja hero! :heh:

Oh, and I also happened to come across this. Dunno who made it, but it's sweet! Hopefully, we'll see more of these done with other characters.....

ranchan13 2014-11-13 23:41

So far, I've been quite pleased with the series, and a good thing too. With the end of Naruto, I'd been hoping to find a replacement, and this looks like a good, spiritual successor.

I think the first 16 chapters are out, but only 7 translated, hope they catch up soon

Esclair 2014-11-14 01:17

His rival is complete ass, and it's not even for any good reason either.

drunkenwolfin 2014-11-14 09:50

Such a nice read.

Seems to be inspired by one-punch man, however its refreshing from the instant OP.

It is in some ways, the teacher does resembling kakashi in his original testing, uncanningly so, the rival is an arse the same as sasuke was originally. MC seems to have unlimited hidden potential.

But I'm looking at the whole world overrun by heroes and supervillians, a hero training academy, MC is a strength base. and come on, ending things with one punch too.

Potentially inpired by both in different aspects, but the setting to me for me seems closer to One-Punch Man to me than Naruto, probably due to the scale of influence being world class compared to character base.

kiak666 2014-11-14 10:30

Just recently found out this series, read the English scanlations up to chapter 7, got impatient, read the Chinese scanlations up to chapter 16, and WOW was it a blast to read!!!

What I like best is that how Izuku actually uses his brains as well as keen observation skills to formulate plan when fighting against his opponents, instead of purely relying on the powers that he just recently obtained.

I actually like some of the supporting casts as well, especially the frog girl (whom I find kind of cute, in a different kind of way compared to Ochako :heh:)
