Plot Summary: Quote:
So apparently, the manga "Pluto" is getting an anime adaptation according to a poster at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France. Pretty interesting considering that fans of the manga always hoped to see one. Source: http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-new...-adapt-en-anim |
Its. Actually. Happening!? Holy shit!!!
|
So this is going to be at M2 studio, aka Maruyama Masao's studio.
|
Wow. Really?
It's a pleasant surprise. Next 20th Century Boys please? The movie was kinda meh. |
Holy shit! Never thought this would be animated, read the manga about 6 months ago, loved it. Especially since the Astro Boy arc it's based on was a fav of mine when I was young, but even discounted that it was fantastic.
Hope it's done justice. |
WOW, I did not expect it, I hope it's October.
|
If I remember right, Maruyama mentioned that it is unlikely to see Pluto anime before 2020. Unless he unexpectedly got funding...

Where did you see that? |

Pluto is so good. So, so fucking good. If Maruyama is behind it, I trust it won't be screwed up. |
I'm not very familiar with Astro Boy/Atom, but Pluto was a spectacular tale and worked perfectly as a stand alone story. People shouldn't be afraid to jump in head first.
|
Holy shit
bless everyone we're actually getting it |
I would come out of anime retirement if this thing is real deal.
|
So apparently, it will debut in 2020 with 8 long episodes.

Maruyama had said it needed 39 eps, and he's right. So unless these 8 eps are really, really long, it's going to require serious cuts.
But, any Pluto anime is a good thing, and I really want Maruyama to live to see this happen. I'll take what I can get. |

Edit: found an interview with Maruyama where he talks about Pluto adaptation, says he would do it in 8 hour long episodes. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/conv...2012/otakon/11 |
WOW
I'm totally gobsmacked, as I'd never expected this. Love the manga. |

Still - the whole point is, Maruyama has always contended that getting funding for a proper adaptation of such an non-commercial source in the modern climate would be next to impossible. So if he's lowering his sights a bit in order to get this done while he's still around to shepherd it through, how can one be anything but admiring? This is a great man, one of anime's staunchest defenders of ambition and artistic integrity. He deserves to see Pluto happen, even if it's an abridged version. |
He's clearly been saying 8 hours for years. Maruyama is of a dying breed that can get material to work in the time they want to do it in.
|
Hell yeah. After that can we please please please get an adaptation of Billy Bat?
|
|
So it's a movie from the director of in the corner of the world?

Looks pretty good though . |
I'll believe it when I'm watching end product and not a minute before. Too many disappointments already.
Speaking of... too bad it's a movie instead of a series. That won't be nearly enough time to properly adapt it - but if it actually happens I'll take whatever I can get. |

Thread moved to Movies forum.

Oh, so it'll be a series of movies. As always, I would have preferred a TV series but at least it's not just one movie.

Any adaptation of Urusawa material that gets proper treatment will get my time.

1 - Movies usually have a technical quality far superior to TV anime. 2 - Movies also have many less restrictions than TV. Scenes like the fight between Arararagi and Adult Shinobu in Kizumonogatari would never be broadcast on most television stations in the world. I think these two points are very positive and in the case of Pluto, this would be essential, at least for the technical quality. And if it really will be several movies (although I find it difficult), being an TV anime would be something that does not seem to have any advantage. Well, assuming it's a movie for theaters and not for some streaming service, we'd have to wait several months to watch, but so what? It's just a question of having patience. |
Reliable leaker - looks like Maruyama’s long, selfless odyssey may finally be nearing it’s destination.
https://twitter.com/oecuf0/status/16...k0zxBD_5Wl-E2Q It’s almost hard to wrap one’s mind around this actually happening, it’s been in limbo for so long. Hs any anime project ever had so many false starts? |

LOL, not even close I don't think. And with that it was never a question of if, only when.

I think Urusawa titles are just generally cursed in this regard. Monster was only ever fully released in Australia in anime form outside of Japan. I happen to be damn lucky to own it. Yes, it did get on streaming recently, but that's a jail of its own. Edit: Seems rather official now and at least the director of all the other Urusawa titles is in charge of this one. Although...Netflix only will always give me concern... |
Great to hear that this is getting an official release. In hindsight it getting a Netflix release does explain why Monster was recently added the Netflix catalogue, at least in Japan.

Good to hear that things are on-track :).
