Space anime warfare
Just as a general question for the fun of it....
What do you think was the anime that had the best representation of space battles? over all I think Banner/ crest of the stars did, it just seamed the most realistic compared to fleets and strategies. the sphere around the battle wasn’t very realalistic but it centered your atention |
Starship Operators. Except for some cheap scifi gimmicks, like that ship with the warp jump drone, it's quite realistic. The battles, at least up to the point I saw, took into account things like inertia, and the vastness of space, which are usually ignored in scifi in favor of "it looks cool".
Of course, I haven't seen the entire series yet. I was watching it up to the point it was licensed, and I haven't gotten around to buying the dvds yet. |
Actually The Seikai space battles, in particular the Space-time bubbles are very well thought out and consistent and are fairly realistic, by comparison with just about any other sci-fi.
Space time bubbles are what allow their ships to even exist in plane-space. What is impressive is how this dictates their engagements. Sords become the strategic objectives of warfare and are dangerous choke points. Tactical engagement is entirely based on use of space-time bubbles; merging bubbles to reinforce or concentrate fire versus mine-attack and surrounding bubbles to ensure that the target ships can't concentrate their best firepower at the engagers. As for other space combat. You can't entirely rule out the original (UC) Gundam. I am not sure where Leijiverse titles stand or how LOGH depicts them, but even old stuff like Yamato was pretty interesting in how it depicted space combat (ship/weapon specialisation etc.) |

as for gundam I always thought most of their space battles were lame because it was full of eather super lucky misses or badly timed hits. I mean I dont care how good a robot or ship you have, enough lasers and missiles fired your way and you cant dodge or dlock them all your just another casualty of war and a pial of slag. |
Clone Wars.
Beautiful animation, and fairly engaging. Not exactly anime, but pretty close. |
Of course, the seikai no senki battles would have been far more interesting if they didn't consist almost entirely of mine spamming from both sides.
I'd recommend legend of the galactic heroes for some really good space battles. |
For realistic space battles, Infinite Ryvius is my pick.
For coolest, none has come close to Vandread and its second season for me.;) |
What about some of the battles in Galaxy Railways?

Cresti/Banner was good, but Vandread and how the Earth just considers it's colonizes as a food source was more enjoyable for me. Banner 2 was so much whining I never finished it. Crest was the best of that series. |
Jebus! No one mentioned Legends of Galactic Heroes. I think this one is the most realistic one from all above mentioned!

I concur that Crest/Banner has the most realistic of the space of the battles in anime. |

In terms of sheer realism, there is no show that has ever equaled the combats of Starship Operators. I remember in one episode, they say it will take 3 days to enter firing range. Can anyone here recall any show that ever addressed the vastness of space so realistically? (And amazingly they keep up the tension in the story as well.) That is just a single example of what you'll encounter while watching this show. |

Anyhow, I generally prefer cool to realistic but if you could have both then it works the best:) LoGH had some great ones. I'm was planning on renting Starship Operators some day. Thanks to you guys it just got bumped up my list:) I tend to prefer it when they keep away from the "tiny units keep them busy while we power the main gun!" I wanna see some creative use of tractor beams. Ah. Memories of Starcontrol 2. I'd also like to see many varied types of weapons. I like it when they include mecha but I prefer them for infiltration/sabotage. There was a series of shorts (12 episodes no more than 10 minutes long) that aired on a japanese music station late night back in 95 or so which had the 3D battles done well. All I remember of it was that the main ship's computer was also an android on the ship named Unit-chan (cute name so I remembered it). Each ship had, like, ten people on intel because they had to keep track of all the crazy stuff that was happening everywhere. |
The reason for why large formations of ships don't "come at them from below/above" is probably because it would be dang hard to coordinate, moving a large formation of ships like that would take way too long, and in the meantime the enemy can easily attack the flank or retreat.
By the time you actually get "above" the enemy would have been waiting in it's new formation for several hours/days :heh: Now that I think about it, Gunbuster 1 had some nifty "realistic" things and a whole lot of not realistic things of course, maybe not the kind of animé one would be looking for "space warfare" but it's worth a watch anyways. :) |
Hard sci-fi on the big screen means you spend 500 years to reach your target, and spend 5minutes of engagement time.
believe me, it makes bad anime. |
What I didn't like about SO so much is that Shinon is too much of a Deus Ex. (She has all the right answers at the right time). Galaxy Railways taught you that everyone is important and no one is a 'hero'. Same with Crest. Everyone is important and even if the commander looks like a complete IDIOT, his support people are trained properly and hopefully no one dies.

Can you imagine LaFiel having a Butt shooter like the Spathi? She would win every battle but would be courtmartialed for having such a disgusting ship! Hahahaha. |
i'd say most gundams beside g gundam properly represent space combat with mecha and warships. And also just another 2 cents of mine,
if you want a game with good space combat i'd say gundam encounters in space is great. I have the japanese version (i am retarted, i bought the japanese version of a gundam game that already was in english. and it costed 60!!!!! ><) and its great. Just giving that 2 cents in case u wanted to like play a space combat game >> << >> |
