Take your pick, it won't hurt. Doremi needs your input.
Guys... The time has come!
Take your pick, it won't hurt. Mai-Battle Dance Battle Battle Dance Performance Martial Battle (poll is at doremi website) |
Whatever happened to your oath that you're going to stick with "Mai-Battle" regardless of criticism? ;)
Before I make my decision, can you please post something about the Japanese term that was used. Even if it is a made-up word, there are clues that a native speaker would use to interpret it. Can you (or your translator) please tell us what cues exist? Walk us through it, so that an intelligent response can be made. Otherwise, I might as well throw darts at a board. |
The word is 'butou' - 舞踏. nihongoresources turns up:
舞踏 [ぶとう] [butou] - (n) dancing. 舞蹈 [ぶとう] [butou] - (n) dancing. But it's used to refer to, well, a battle. It could be another of Sunrise's multilingual puns - 'butou' sounds a lot like 'battle'. Anyway, lad back in one of the early eps did some crazy conflagaration and came up with mai-battle, given that the reading of the kanji 舞 (dance) is 'mai'. |

Lordy, I do stick by Mai-battle whole-heartedly. It's just that there are a "few" people, wink wink nudge nudge, *cough Starks* that wants me to change, and they have bugged me long enough. Since I am a fan of democracy, and I love polls, here you go.
Anyways, here are a few arguments FOR Mai-battle. In episode 2, Yayoi scribbled on the ground. http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/6...ibattle0oz.jpg The first kanji is Mai, so I left it. The second kanji is Tou, which means battle. Therefore, Mai-Battle. Dancing just sounds too voodoo to me. The Chinese subs translate it literally as a "Dance Battle." http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/6528/butou3bg.jpg But since that does sound pretty voodoo, I like it as Mai-Battle. Yes, it's a "half-hearted" translation, and yes, Static translated it as "performance." However, I had to change every previous assumption I ever made, from Mai-Star to Aswald to Shibaratsu. I will not falter in Mai-Battle. Whatever. Vote. |

*goes to the poll* (p.s. as for accuracy of the term, I'm afraid I have no idea on that. ) |
Out of the options given:
Mai-Battle Dance Battle Battle Dance Performance Martial Battle I would go for the dancing battle phrases Battle Dance Dance Battle (reminds me of Tekken for some reason... maybe it's because of "Tag Battle!") or Performance In some episodes an Otome's fight has been described as a beautiful dance (or maybe I was just imagining it) so I think these choices fit that idea well. The dancing battle options are shown to make literal sense in the manga (they battle to music and there seems to be a rhythm). |
Go with my very first suggestion (which everyone probably have forgotten by now :p )
Martial Dance or Dance of War |
I too prefer the term 'Mai-Battle' mostly because its more of a term than the direct translations of the kanji.

I voted for perfomance in the poll but I'm okay with Mai-battle.
|
I'll go for Mai-Battle because it reminds me of Mai.
IMO it should be just "battle" .... |
Why exactly does it need to be translated? There is nothing in the English language that represents what the word means, so just put down the literal romanization (butou*), along with a note up at the top the first time its used in episodes to explain the meaning (*Butou is a battle between Otome).
If that's not a possibility, for whatever reason, stick with Mai Battle. |
"Mai-Battle"
Just For Fight And Perfomance |
[X] Mai-battle :)
|
Mai-Battle. Just because I'm used to it.
|
Feh, just stick with Mai-Battle. It has that 'original' quality to it. The way I see it, your translations are closer to what the origianl Japanese are saying and Static's subs have the 'Americanized' scripts. :D I like it that way so stick with Mai-Battle please
If they don't know what it means by now....:P:P:P Besides, we need at least one 'Mai' in this show since they won't reveal the real one any time soon... |
going for Mai-Battle as well ...
or ... maybe Battle Dance aren't that bad :p ... that would imo be the secondbest choice ... |
If I may add something else, the term Mai-Battle has a distinctive ceremonious feel to it. At least, that was the sense of the word I got when I first heard it, as if it was a ritual being done in Honour of the great Mai.
But, that can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. Good, because it gives the whole fight a nice ceremonious, ancient, ring. Bad, because WTH does Mai have to do with the History of Garderobe? Then again, we never know, she may be one of the original founders or pillars? |
Mai-Battle
Performance Either one of those, although I would stick to Performance. One worders are usually better, and in the case of Otome it's not a weird term... plus it closely relates to what Otomes are supposed to do, right? |
