Girls und Panzer

Official Website

I'm the last person I expected to be creating this thread, but it was going to be made by someone sooner or later. If you enjoyed Strike Witches and Upotte, this show looks right up your alley.

Sumeragi 2012-05-16 13:21

YES! Finally this particular genre has arrived!

Kyuu 2012-05-16 13:33

Girls and Pan... oh... wait... :heh:

This reeks of "Strike Witches" for some reason.

TurkeyPotPie 2012-05-16 14:04

Character designs look bland. Hope it's tanks anthropomorphized as schoolgirls and not just generic moe schoolgirls riding/operating tanks. WWII-era tanks are one topic that I was really interested in as a youngster, especially German tanks, so this sounds promising. But then the director being responsible for Another and Blood-C sounds not so promising. :eyebrow:

MisaoFan 2012-05-16 14:07

Premise sounds like a tank edition of Upotte!.

totoum 2012-05-16 14:26

Tsutomu Mizushima is directing so sign me up,as long as this guy doesn't do horror he's fine.

Should be a fun lighthearted show.

zeniselv 2012-05-16 15:15

the designs reek of deen so im gonna pass.

MisaoFan 2012-05-16 16:29

For me, the designs do not look like DEEN at all, it just look like a typical 2006/2007 slice of life anime in the lines of Manabi Straight or Sketchbook full color. I still don't think DEEN would animate this, but rather Diomedea or Nomad.

Sinestra 2012-05-16 16:54

well considering i actually did enjoy Strike Witches. I will probably check this out too.

On another note ... here's a little more about it:

Takaaki Suzuki, a military history advisor on Strike Witches and Upotte!!, revealed a new television anime called Girls und Panzer (Girls & Tanks) on Thursday. Bandai Visual publicity representative Yūji Hirooka (Eureka 7: AO, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere) also said that he is involved, and producer Kiyoshi Sugiyama (Armored Trooper Votoms Case;Irvine, Blue Submarine No. 6, Yukikaze) added that the project has been in development for a year and a half. Director Tsutomu Mizushima (Squid Girl, Another, Blood-C, xxxHOLiC) chimed in that the “pleasant school story” is his first entirely original work (as opposed to an anime based on a previous manga or novel).

The official website for the project will open later on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. (7:00 a.m. EDT) with a promotional video that is about two minutes long, the main staff list, and part of the main cast.

Ryūichi Saitaniya will launch a manga series, tentatively titled Girls & Panzer, in the July issue of Media Factory’s Comic Flapper magazine on June 5. The “military teen battle action” manga is about “high school girls x battles in tanks.” It is not stated whether the manga is inspiring the anime, the anime is inspiring the manga, or if the two projects are parallel developments.

DonQuigleone 2012-05-16 17:28

Some images from the promo video here.

Dhomochevsky 2012-05-16 18:33

Now Panzers have their own harem already and I still don't have one (harem that is).

Bonta Kun 2012-05-16 20:10

It's got tanks, count me in.
Not enough anime that revolve around tanks, even less on real life ones, got nothing against the sci-fi/futuristic ones but I'd like to see more real life ones.
Altho tanks + girls would usually mean win to me, I'd prefer something a little more serious looking but I'll take it.

Let's hope it sticks to the "pleasant story" cause it will be hard to take in any kinda gory bloody deaths and what not from this, teens girls in a tank is frankly daft:heh:

DonQuigleone 2012-05-16 21:30

Character designs are indeed a bit "bleh". Still, it's a pretty weird concept. Could work. I mean, Tanks are cool. Especially when they're called Panzers.

Cosmic Eagle 2012-05-16 21:45

If this is tank Upotte, count me definitely in

Judging from what I searched on Google, this German tank type -- especially the Panzer IV -- is by far one of the most popular designs, and it dominated the battlefield for a time, destroying anything else in its way, until it found its formidable match in the form of the Russian T-34.

Sometimes I read borrowed copies of ARMS Magazine, and often Japanese military buffs (who double as columnists within that mag) love the Panzers.

Man, I'm thinking about the battle tank game I used to play: Core Design's Shellshock for the Playstation.

HosannaExcelsis 2012-05-17 00:06

If this is tame Mizushima, it'll be worthless, but if this is crazy Mizushima, it could be a lot of fun! So we'll see.

I like the idea, as cute girls and military is a plus for me, but the bland art style is somewhat of a put-off. Also, I would have greatly preferred that they wear something even slightly resembling military uniforms or battledress rather than typical Japanese school uniforms.

This anime would be about tanks, not wars. Being a tank crew is not the most pleasant lifestyle in the world by a long shot. Being too realistic would turn people off. In general you can't justify having so many different tanks of different origins in the same place, so they are not going to stretch the metaphor too far.

MisaoFan 2012-05-17 06:00

According to what I saw in the pic, the name of tank teams refer to animal names (like Kame Team, Usagi Team).

Katapan 2012-05-17 06:01

The website's up: http://girls-und-panzer.jp/

Previously 'leaked' staff is spot-on; the animation studio is Actas.

NoemiChan 2012-05-17 06:01

I can't wait to see the girl versions of the Tiger and the Pershing.. If there are any....

MisaoFan 2012-05-17 06:09

Can't wait to see the PV and the sound dramas, since they aren't available in my country (It's licensed by Bandai Visual so I don't have Japanese IP to watch the PVs).

I don't necessarily want it to be realistic (although that would be neat), but I just think that something even remotely similar to military uniforms would be more esthetically pleasing wear next to tanks, even if it's just a dark brown blazer and skirt which would be a better alternative to what we have here.

EagleBlue 2012-05-17 08:03

Found this. It's the PV.

Dynamic tag cannot be rendered. (PrintableThread)

Now I got a clue... I have to retract everything I said.... They're repairing an old tank!!! Man, the tanks were only seen at the first and last part of the PV... It changed everything.... A group of girls inspire by tanks...:uhoh:

MisaoFan 2012-05-17 08:12

Plot is revealed according to Adala News :
Quote:

The story takes place in a academy where students are trained to become tank wielders known as "Tanks" (Senshado). Miho, a average schoolgirl, hates this kind of martial arts until the student council president forces her to participe in a tank tournament by becoming a tank wielder.

Midonin 2012-05-17 08:29

So it's less Upotte and more So Ra no Wo To.

Which is still a pretty big compliment to be paid in terms of things to be compared to.

Bonta Kun 2012-05-17 08:35

Hmm so tank war games then?

As long as there is a great deal of focus on the tanks as well as whatever slice of life fluff I can live with the setting but that PV doesn't really fill me with confidence in that respect.

Hope the cast isn't entirely all highschool girls either, hope to see some old gruff geezer spouting words of wisedom and stuff.

NoemiChan 2012-05-17 08:39

I was amazed that highschool students has access or have been given permission to fix a military tank. Its an old tank and the parts are rare right? hmmm...

fertygo 2012-05-17 10:42

So after dead moe.. we came to new era, military moe eh?

Utsuro no Hako 2012-05-17 11:10

I for one am looking forward to the inevitable Cute Girls in Cute Submarines series. (I'm shipping for a Los Angeles/Alfa pairing.)

Well, we've had guns, now comes tanks. Planes and subs are the obvious next step, unless you want to go with ballistic missiles.
