Unless I misunderstood, Ma-chan implies that the motive behind the invasion was to restore their natural breeding abilities that they lost when they modified their genes to produce only female offspring (or they modified their genes to reproduce within a single gender, but now they can never give birth to men). What happened instead was that they got carried away with the skirt chasing and now they've upset the natural balance of earth since the majority of the female population now swings the other way, thereby proving that Earth Girls are Easy, indeed. A particularly interesting bit to this came earlier when Kotoko caught a glimpse of something while Shouta was relieving himself, and then ran off crying because, despite how much she cared for him, she was so repulsed by his genitalia that she began to question whether or not she could really be with him. Ma-chan elaborates, saying they "broke this world," and follows up on that with: "We became this world's third gender. That gender drove the women mad - and drove the men down."

In fact, her monologue almost redeemed my opinion of the Arume - until Razael gutted her, anyway :(. Poor Ma-chan :upset:

The official chornology says something about this. Long time before the invasion to Earth, the Arume were pretty much like humans, with both gender, male and female. Eventually, however, male birth-rate decreased until men no longer were born. Reduced to only women the Arume then modified their DNA with nanomachines, in order to be able to reproduce within their single gender. With this they were able to reproduce, but were still unable to give birth to men.

So, I take that what the Arume are looking for on Earth is to restore their ability to produce male offspring, and therefore restore men in their world. But they have been a lesbian society for a long time now, and their careless behaviour is messing up this world's sexuality, and thus the human social structure itself.

Quite interesting really, even if it seems to be just an excuse for endless ecchiness lol.

It's pretty ironic, too - they come here looking for something and end up nearly destroying it.
The problem seems to be within the Arume citizens rather than the military, which seems quite focused on the original goal. However, considering this, I find the fact that something like Arume Street is allowed. It must have governmental backing in order to enforce the off-with-his-head policy it uses to maintain itself, and if the government is trying to steer their culture away from that... gah, I think there's a big part of the picture we aren't getting. In fact, this problem seems to have only worsened as time has continued, considering that the first manga is set a millennium from second and there seem to be fewer men around than ever.

I'm still a bit puzzled by the "endless ecchiness" - I'm beginning to feel like the mangaka is using it for something other than service, but I just can't put my finger on what exactly.
Some of the most poignant scenes are during these moments. Kotoko's encounters with the two Arume from the bar (forgot their names) were very insightful into how humans seem to feel about the Arume. The second chapter where Kenzou and Shouta are trying to gather the gumption to get it done had a nice bit of emotional impact, as well. Maybe the high levels of emotion in these kinds of situations allow for expressions of feelings that wouldn't normally some to light.

Also, is it just me, or are there anti-homosexual overtones present here despite some of the content?

I'm not so sure if the government in general really wants to steer them away from that. I mean, in the manga it's Mariel (Ma-chan) who goes on talking about this, but what happens to her? Razael slices her to pieces lol. It's clear then that there are various factions with different takes on this issue. There seems to be some people, even among the military, who are just fine the way they are, and don't want anything to do with men.

I know there's sort of a reason for all the explicit content, but some times it's just too much you know. It kinda grosses me out.

I whouldn't say anti-homosexual per se, but it clearly sets homosexuality as something abnormal. That could be taken as anti-homosexual though :heh:.

But the two ideologies are polar opposites. One side wants the Arume to return to two genders and let human society revert back to the way it was prior to the war, and the other prefers the status quo and would just as soon never see another man again. They can't possibly coexist, as evidenced in the example you stated.
The weird part is that the whole reason they came to earth was because of the former, but the latter seems to be the group in charge as well as the majority. It seems like something happened during or shortly after the war... like a coup or something.

Definitely. In most instances, the exact same things could be conveyed with different camera angles that aren't quite as gratuitous.
Maybe the mangaka is also trying to emphasize the oversexed behavior that's permeating the Arume by portraying it as shocking as it really is? I mean, they're on the verge of FUBAR'ing an entire race simply because they can't keep their pants on.

Also detrimental to society, apparently.
At least the effects portrayed in the manga aren't improbable considering the causes and circumstances.

What the Arume want is to restore their ability to give birth to men, which is what they originally lost (and subsequently men itself). With the nanomachines they can reproduce without men just fine, but they still can't give birth to men.

If they could fix that, they could restore they race as originally was, with both gender. They came here looking for a way to do that.

Now I am confused. If that is what they are looking for, surely having reproduction with men can fix that because they can get men's genetic material. That would be the only way if they don't want to rely on any tech. What do you mean that won't help? Is there something different about the aliens' biology?

That leads to another confusion of mine, why do they want to restore the male part of their race?

Well I guess it's only natural for a race to want to keep its male part to make it "complete and balanced"etc. maybe many of the aliens dont feel the need,but it might be just politically correct

Considering that there are sperm banks where the cream of the human males contribute, devices that can seperate the "X" sperm from the "Y" sperm, and artificial insemination, they could accomplish their objectives through free trade and not even have to be close to any men other than their sons. Of course, that would not allow the author to make a long story based on an unnecessary series of events.

Men disappeared in their planet because their women lost the ability to produce male offspring. So, men no longer were born, and when the ones that were alive died, only women remained. Because of this just having sex with male humans wouldn't help (it wouldn't be any different to having sex with their own men when they're still alive) as it still would produce female offspring. The problem is in their own bodies, and have nothing to do with whom they have sex with. The nanomachines thingy has nothing to do with this, as it is something they developed after all their men died, in order to be able to reproduce without them (as a result they became a lesbian society).

Why they came here then? To use humans (both gender) as experimental subjects, in order to find a way to fix the problem in their bodies. That was the original purpose, but the manga seems to imply they lost interest in it quite fast, and proceeded to turn Earth in their private yuri harem instead lol, which is completely understandable because they have lived as lesbians for too long; and since they can reproduce just fine without men (even if they can't give birth to men), there's no real need for it. I suppose someone from their government thought it was worth a try, and hence the invasion... but it just didn't work (at least that's what it seems).

If you don't want human DNA, why go to earth. There is nothing special about human reproduction. Studies would be much more efficient using smaller animals with shorter reproductive cycles, and more useful using animals on their home planet unless they had all suffered the same fate. If that was the case then they could get all the lab animals they wanted without ever revealing themselves as aleins. And they could likely get human eggs and sperm if they were needed.

Now their males becoming unable to reproduce is not a stretch. From what I have read it could happen on earth someday. Evidently, long ago, the "X" and "Y" chromosomes were about the same size, but the "Y" has been slowly losing unnecessary data. If it losses too much then men may no longer be viable and women would have to find a way to reproduce without them.

We have men and they don't. From their perspective, I'd say that qualifies as special.

But research regarding animals wouldn't be applicable due to biological differences in the species. For useful study, they need organisms similar to their own genetic makeup. Humans and Arume can interbreed, which is about as similar as it gets.
If the animals on their planet had all lost the male gender, their ecosystem (and means of sustenance) would collapse because it would be impossible to maintain the nanomachine technology on a large enough scale to preserve the various species. Since their home planet is still populated with Arume, I'd venture that this is not the case.

You mean conducting these experiments in secret rather than conquering the planet? It was probably more efficient to do the latter, considering the gaping chasm in their technology and ours. Just look at the chronology - that war was over before it even started.
Taking over a planet against the will of its inhabitants is not nice, of course, but I doubt they were worried about that. The Arume as a whole seem to be an extremely irresponsible group: they went to all that trouble to conquer earth, screwed up the society on a deep level with their wanton ways, and then completely lost interest in what they came for and continued subjugating the planet under racially biased policies.
Maybe it's just that whole "winner pushing their values on the loser" thing Yui was talking about.

I agree with you on this one. Even we, as humans, need clinical trial before we put drugs on the shelves, would you like to take medicine that has been only tested on animals? Yes, doing experiments on the organisms that are similar to you is far better than not. If the aleins can interbreed with humans, that is as close as you can get. Heck, there is not even one pecies on Earth which can interbreed with humans.

Can they reproduce with human males? If they can reproduce with human females, why aren't we seeing many, many mix breed people around? They remain a rare sight, don't they?
