That technique is called dry brushing, and quite literally thats what it means.
It can be used with anything from paints to pastel chalk -as I'm showing here-

You basically require 4 things, the chalk, a stiff short bristled brush, and something to scrape the chalk. (fig.1)

fig.1

You then scrape the chalk onto something -I used a piece of paper- (fig.2)

Then, depending on how heavy you want to weather something,
coat your brush with the appropriate amount. (fig.3)

Final you brush it on, again depending on how heavy you want to weather it,
pressing hard for more transfer, or lightly for light highlighting.(fig.4)

Here are some examples of dry brushing. (I know its not exactly Gunpla, but my gundam models are incomplete at this moment..)

Man..was I way off...:heh:

Thanks for the secret, Huhtis and viper, for your picture-by-picture tutorial. Now I can use the effects on my completed ZAKU Phantom.

I have a question. Does anybody know if a HG or higher 1/100 GOUF gunpla model(the Destiny version) exist?

But because of all the shifting armor and lines, there are "empty spots" all over the place, and the extreme level of detail due to the lines gives it too much detail, imo.

I tried using the special Gundam marker designed to bold the lines on models to bold the lines on my 1/100 HG Gundam X model, and the result was horrible ue to all the lines, it made it look ugly. That's what the PG Strike is like to me. :uhoh:

I am pretty new to gundam modelling (I've tons quite a few 1/144 scale GW models without painting or sanding *shudders* and I am looking to start doing some gundam models seriously.

First off, my first two Master Grade models are going to be two of my more favorite gundams: The RX-79 [G] Gundam and the Ball Ver. Ka. and I have a few questions:

1. Are these good models? (Stable, few seam lines, etc.)
2. How do you use gundam weathering paint markers and or tamiya weathering pastels or whatever they are called? I would love to exaggerate weathering on my RX-79 using artist oil and the above items, but strongly need a tutorial.
3. I have heard of a technique where you don't paint your model but just sand it down using like 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper and using gundam weathering markers, can anyone give me a tutorial or an example of how they would look?
4. Since I don't have an airbrush, hwo should I paint the models?

Also, are gundam Fix Figuration Figures detailed and worth the price?

After I purchase and finish my first MG I will definetly post some pics.

Well Shiro i am no expert myself however, to check out if the RX-79[G] and ball ver ka, you should have a look at dalong.net, and look at all the oob models he has built, he take pictures of the sprues and scans the manuals, so you can see where the seam lines will be in advance.

From what most people have said, if the models you buy aren't stable, just put some lead weights or something into the feet of the gundam(if it has feet) and it should be stable.

And if you don't have an airbrush you can paint models in a few different ways. You could buy tamiya spaypaints and just use that. Use gundam markers, but from what i have read it suxs. Lastly is the good ol paintbrush and paints of your choice.

Cheers,
Zom

RX-79[G] is very stable unless you put something heavy into its frezzer - I mean backpack. :p

Ball comes with its own stand

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Also, on Dalong.net does he do anything to his models besides panel lines and slight detailing? I ask this because I would like to know what the modled colors are, as they provide a good color guide for painting.

dj898 2006-07-20 19:33

those were assembled out of box with panel lining (and minimal spot painting) but no major painting nor any detailing up

M_Flores 2006-07-20 19:56
